    When I was in the US Army one of my assignments was as a "Disaster Preparedness NCO". In other words I planned, staffed and equipped my detachment's "shelter" for operations in case of natural and man made disasters and nuclear war. Although this was in the 1980's I have been personally maintaining my proficiency as a "Prepper" to protect my family and friends. Looking at the example of the Rising S Shelter as compared to the Atlas shelter I am literally flabbergasted by the poor quality of the Rising S bunker. In my humble opinion the Rising S shelters are a death trap in a serious disaster or war event. I would call them expensive steel coffins.
    One thing I think Ron should have pointed out about the Air system is that the thin plastic of the system is it will NOT stop any radiation leakage. Plastic might stop chemical contamination but it is not molecularity capable of stopping heavy radiation contamination. The Swiss Air Systems have metal skins and internal components which shield from radiation. The Swiss system is my choice if I had the appropriate setting to use it. In my case though, I would have to build an interior safe room with the system as my wife and I live on a postage stamp lot on the city.
    Well done Ron, btw you have the best product I've seen so far.

      The radiation from fallout trapped by the systems HEPA filter is not excessively dangerous, it's only dangerous in large quantities or if inhaled. (The carbon is only there for biological and volatile gases including radioactive iodine). As long as the filter is functional it doesn't really matter if the casing is steel or not, it's more of a longevity issue in that s.steel is not going to get damaged or degrade in high temperatures.
      If radiation leakage was an issue then the connecting air pipes wouldn't be made of rubber. And NBC suits are just rubber too.

      @@____________________________.x we will see what the rating of that overpriced plastic box, with taped together filters and a computer fan will be, once it has been tested/analysed by a pro lab. Can't wait to see the result.

    • @____________________________.x
      @____________________________.x 2 роки тому +4

      @@bestoftheYT Something that Dyson pointed out years ago is that the performance of a filter is not a useful statistic unless you measure it after the filter has been contaminated with dust. Because that is then a better indication of the 'static pressure' that the fan is capable of. That's where RisingS box will fail badly as that fan will simply fail to cope. You can tell from the fan blade design (ie the HUGE gaps between the blades) that this fan was intended for very light duct flow (like a bathroom vent) and was not intended to be put in front of any filter medium at all.
      When a real Engineer sees it, he's going to totally rip it to shreds, and I think Ron knows this.

      He compared a few different types last month. If you are thinking of the specifications then the Israeli and Swiss ones are going to be very similar, they really only concern themselves with airflow through the filter mediums, the actual HEPA filtration efficiency will be much the same too. You'd probably find it easier to source a Swiss unit though.

    Not sure what treatment they do for the filters you use, but they should have broad coverage like the brownish yellow label 3M respirator filters and should also have a catalyst for converting carbon monoxide into carbon dioxide.

    • @____________________________.x
      @____________________________.x 2 роки тому +2

      This is an important point, NBC filters do not filter out Carbon Monoxide (or a lot of other stuff), if there is a fire outside then the vents should be off and supplementary oxygen used if required. Using a catalyst isn't ideal.

    Honestly, the optional ability to manually crank the swiss is better. You can save energy, and get a slight workout. Staying sedentary can lead to some major health issues, now pair that with a depression that would be caused by an event that would make a bunker needed? Yeah getting up and doing something, even if it's cranking something that doesn't need to be cranked might save your life.
    You're basically giving people a way to have a low effort workout inside a limited spaced area.

    Ron mentioned that the carbon would protect you from radiation. That's probably true, in that the heaviest fallout (mostly gamma-emitting particles) should be avoided by the intake bend or caught in the prefilter, while whatever radioisotopes remaining would get trapped in the carbon, with the remaining (mostly) alpha or beta radiation being stopped by the steel shell. And remember that the radiation level will decrease hourly. But an additional selling point is that the carbon will be highly effective in filtering out any chemical and (likely, most) biological contaminants.

    • @____________________________.x
      @____________________________.x 2 роки тому +5

      "Ron mentioned that the carbon would protect you from radiation" - then he misspoke, because it won't. Fallout is filtered by the pre-filter canister and the HEPA filter. Like you said, the carbon is for chemical and biological contaminants (but not all of them).
      The carbon will filter out any radioactive iodine gas though, maybe he was thinking of that.

    If you had to crank by hand how often would someone have to spin that? All day? Once an hour? Once a day for 30min?

      If you have air quality monitoring with a 4 gas tester , you could calculate the oxygen levels and estimate replenishment that way or just crudely , based on a VF-40 giving 40 CFM , you would pump for 1 minutes for every 40 cubic feet of shelter.
      Depends also if you have baked beans in your shelter , you need to allow for methane displacement.

    I can't begin to imagine why someone or group would ever want to burn your business down. For those new to the internet, that was sarcasm. Keep up the good (REAL) work. Wish I could afford a bunker and the land for it. :-/

    We use carbon filters like that on Wildland fire bulldozers for air filtration. I bet those filters can be cross referenced at John Deere.
