Miku, the rhythm guitarist with the red rose on her head, was the original singer of the band, but she realized she didn't have the type of voice needed for hard rock. To Miku's create she realized a vocalist with a deeper voice was needed to sing their music. She auditioned Saiki, the lead vocalist for the role and the rest is history. Also, Miku did not know how to play guitar when she founded the band. Their management company insisted that they needed another guitarist ot play rhythm. Saiki stated she would not play an instrument. Miku told management she didn't know how to play guitar, so Kanami, the lead guitarist, told her she would teach her. She became Miku's sensei. Now Miku, to her credit, has become a very good rhythm guitarist. Miku is also the band's lyricist and she has written some incredible lyrics to their songs.
The Maids call their costumes "combat gear" because they want to destroy the stereotype that petite Japanese females can't rock as hard as any meles. I think they have succeeded.

Uhm, What he said. Only thing is that Mgmt co didn't care so much about the sound in so much as they wanted to balance out the look. At first Miku wasn't crazy about learning to play the guitar but once she realized the importance to the overall sound her attitude changed and she has since dedicated herself to it.
Side note; those reactors that in my humble opinion "Overreact" by jumping around all over the place and running in and out of the room (we all know who I'm talking about) is nothing more than a pretentious, attention whore, court jester fool. You're much better off not being that guy!

Yeah, I know I've seen the Fancams as well as the Super Obnoxious video he posted soon afterwards.. I Love Band-Maid but if they have 1 blemish in my eyes, it's that. A little piece of my Soul dies every time I come across that content. But hey at the end of the day they are Japanese and weird over the top shit like that flyers over there, just look at their game shows.
It's funny how you'll see people lose their minds in the comments section over stuff like volume levels, captioning and talking through solos, because it interferes with their enjoyment of the song. Yet this knuckle head will get a pass meanwhile everything he does is a disruption to the song. I guess it's because anyone familiar with his content usually just avoids it and if you don't it's because you're down with it. For me if a creator can't break down a song and explain to me what it is I'm hearing, then just sit back nod along and appreciate it along with me. Just don't act like some dip shit on screen that makes me wanna throw a rock through my TV while I'm watching it.

    Names:
Miku Kobato (Kobato = small pigeon/dove) (can also be rendered/punned as 3-9 810): founder, rhythm guitar, second vocalist, main lyricist. Phonetic English = MeeKoo.
Kanami: lead guitarist, main composer, occasional backing vocals. KahNahMee.
Akane (nickname "the Gorilla"): drummer, big eater. AhKahNeh.
MISA (nickname "the Barefoot Assassin"): bass. MeeSah.
Saiki (used to be called "Ice Queen" but she's much warmer since the COVID break): lead vocals, has written some lyrics recently, has final say on recordings, devises the set list for each show. SyKee (just like "Psyche" from psychology or Greek mythology).
In Japanese standard dialect, syllables are pronounced with the same emphasis, so it's really not Ah-KAHH-nay or Ka-NAAH-mee as would be natural for English speakers. Getting that right, though, is very hard for English speakers so don't worry too much about it. Also all the vowels are short (i.e., quick) in these names - e.g. "Saiki" = "Psyche", not "SyyKeeee".
As someone mentioned, the Music Gold Rush interview, while old, is great for locking in name + instrument + personality. It's also really funny.

They're such a fucking inspiration for ladies the world over, I love watching them kick our ass. It was never a competition, but having a maid be like "master, hold my beer, I'm going to smoke you on every instrument you play and make an even doper music video" - I'm so here for it.
I've wanted to make metal and hard rock less of a boy's club since I was like 17, 22 years ago, and seeing these ladies just destroy it over and over makes me happier than I could ever put into words. It's the best thing in modern music.

I discovered dozens of bands and solo artists (I'm still discovering new interesting ones every week!), I'm regularly following 20 to 30 of them, and, as a side effect, I bought tons of CDs and vinyls, merch and I've been to many concerts. To truly understand BAND-MAID, you must wholeheartedly embrace 'OMAJINAI-TIME,' an essential part of their live performances. This can be the most challenging aspect, especially for novice adult male fans. I haven't had the chance to experience 'OMAJINAI-TIME' in person, but I've 'experienced' it through several UA-cam videos. I'll be honest; it felt pretty awkward at first. However, I guarantee that 'OMAJINAI-TIME' can be a life-changing experience. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can tell you more about it. Enjoy the delight of living in the same era as BAND-MAID. Enjoy reading about this special group of friends and musicians. They are all incredibly genuine and nice people. It’s easy to root for them.
Feel free to ask any question you could imagine. We Band Maid fans are as nerdy and passionate about the Maids as anyone. String gauges? Tunings? Favorite pastimes? Some Maidiac knows it.
Welcome to the party! Believe an old blues rock guy, the Band Maid catalog is deep. Really deep. They have released over 120 songs and in my opinion? Probably 40-50 are legitimate, accessible, “appealing to the masses” hits. Right up there with Van Halen and Led Zeppelin, and more solid material than heavy hitters like GNR and Motley Crue.
Here are some of my top picks; the cream of the crop, so to speak:
    “Puzzle,” official live
    “From Now On,” OMV
    “DICE,” OMV
    “Don’t you tell ME,” live
    “Moratorium,” live
Those are songs that immediately get my volume maxed out and I drive the long way home

The GAP strikes again! The whole visual concept behind the maid outfits was to shock the audience. Maid outfits in Japan are actually very common. But they usually connotate cutsie young ladies working in Maid Cafes and/or singing bubblegum idol music. When cute girls come out on stage, the audience expects more of the same. Instead they get face-melting rock......which creates the very mental dissonance that you just experienced.

You're wrong. LOL! Well, sort of. You're story was kind of right, but you're showing a picture of the other guitarist. The one you're thinking of, Miku, was the founder of the band. She had always envisioned BAND-MAID having two vocalists. But they also wanted two guitarists. Saiki's voice was the most suitable for the Hard Rock edge she wanted to contrast with the Maid Look. So she took the Lion's Share of Lead Vocal duties. With Miku now the Backing Voclaist, rather than bring in a sixth member, Miku had Kanami teach her how to play rhythm guitar.
