- Airways delves deep into the airlines still operating scheduled passenger flights on their Boeing 747s. While the Queen of the Sky is gradually being phased out, a few airlines continue to fly passenger versions of the Boeing 747 to international hubs and leisure destinations.

After more than 40 years of air travel I finally made it onto a 747 this summer. We flew Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Vancouver, BC. Great trip and service but man, it takes a long time to board 400+ people!

She's the Queen of the Skies for good reason. There is nothing else like flying on the 747. You just feel it and it's hard to describe. I've been on many flights from San Francisco to Shanghai and it was a 747 each time. That's a long assed trip and I got to look forward to it because it was a 747. I have flown on long trips on other types of airplanes, so I know the difference. She's a beauty, that's for sure.
Yes! and its got 4 engines, [not that I was that concerned crossing the Pacific in a 777].

Was lucky to work on them as a crew for 10 years. She was, is and always will remain the Queen of the skies!

I was recently on a Lufthansa 747 from Singapore to Frankfurt. I thought that all 747s had been retired by now. It was so nice to “be back” and a much better experience than recent flights on 787 or A350. They are supposed to be better but I thought not.
The A350 is much better than the 747-8, the Airbus is quieter and has better air.
The old twin aisles are so much more spacious and comfy

I think by better air they meant lower cabin altitude and more efficient air filters.

The 747 was the first plane I ever flew on. It was 1970 and I had just turned 18. I have down many 747s over the years and it is still my favorite plan of all time. It's still the Queen of the skies.

Flew on Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific B747 aircraft in the 90s and 2010s, and each flight left me in awe thinking about how such a big and heavy metal bird could even take off from the ground. She is truly the queen of the skies.
The 747 should be the 8th wonder of the world. I have 1100 hrs in the -200 version and I still marvel at how beautifully it flies.

I recently retired as a flight attendant and I was so fortunate to have flown on the many 747 planes ✈️ in my career
I am scheduled to fly on a 747 this October from Miami to Frankfurt. I always wanted to ride one and now it’s happening. I can’t wait.
I had the good fortune to upgrade into the "hump" of a British Airways 747 transatlantic flight in 2019. I instantly went from a middle-aged guy to a 10-year-old boy. Had goosebumps. The 3 pilots were kind enough (while we were still at the gate, of course) to let me peer into the cockpit (tiny!) of this beautiful airplane.
Wonderful experience, the 747 really gives that feeling 😍✈️

I can relate to that! I also upgraded to the hump when Virgin Atlantic gave this fifty-something the chance to fly a 50-year-old aircraft from MAN to ATL in 2018. Best flight I've ever taken!

Boeing 747..... what an aircraft. 1st international flight for me was on a 200 series with KLM livery from N.Delhi India to AMM onward to KJFK in 1984. Returning back to India I was on a Boeing 747-200 British Airways and I was the only pax from DTW (Yes DTW flew BA internationals back those days from the Berry Terminal that is dust now in 2024) to LHR then onward, that British Airways Boeing 747-200 took on a crap load of pax from Doha and I had to squiggle thru to get to the door to disembark in BOM. But what an experience it was from DTW to LHR to Doha when I was the ONLY pax on board. Sorry my camera was in checked luggage so all I have are memories. 2nd Boeing 747 was another Boeing 747-200 series from Calcutta to LHR back in 1985 and on to DTW on a British Airways Lockheed L10-11 Tristar that too was an awesome aircraft. My 3rd intercontinental flight was on a Boeing 747-400 registration number N666US Northwest Airlines from DTW to AMM to BOM in 1992 and sadly the return to the USA was on Airbus etc and years later while working at a major international airport yeah DTW I was lucky to sit and get a pic taken by the captain of said aircraft N666US in Delta Airlines colors sitting in gate A38 DTW with a flight plan registered as DTW-NGO-MNL back in 2011. So there are my experiences and love for the Queen Of the Skies.
My first (and so far only) time flying on a 747 was in 2007 with Qantas. It was an incredible experience and one I hope to repeat next year when I visit Germany.

I lived in Hawaii for 5 years back in the late 1970’s. I took the 747 many times to visit my family in NYC. We flew from HNL - DFW then DFW- JFK. The flights were absolutely amazing. As a Veteran I got free upgrades to First Class and again the flights were GREAT. I miss those days for many reasons.
I remember in 1972 as a 5 yr old boy flying a pan am 747 to San Juan Puerto Rico and looking up the staircase during a flight and the attendant asked me if I wanted to walk up and take a look. Wow I was so amazed.

As I must be a tad older than most here, I flew quite a bit on Pan Am 747s. Mostly on the South American routes from VCP to MIA and JFK. These 747s were a marvel to me as I had flown DC3s and Constellations as a child. My last Pan Am flight was between JFK and MAD during the build up to one of the desert wars, there was much military traffic and a heck of a storm. We had to keep to route and fly into the storm. I flew various times on Lufthansa 747s maybe the most memorable was into Santiago, Chile. I was in Business, had an A window seat and watched Aconcagua to port on a lovely sunny morning. One of the weirdest 747 configs I ever flew was a Thay flight from Rome to BKK. What would have been business class in other airlines was half occupied by a galley where chefs were cooking meals onboard... This flight had a bonus of a daytime view of the Himalayas to port. Wonder if anyone on this chat ever flew Pan Am, Braniff, Eastern?? Regards
I did fly Pan Am 747´s from Frankfurt to New York and back in August 1976, I was 11 years old. Later I flew the type with Northwest Orient and British Airways. Nice memories😃
I flew this half business/galley configuration myself once in 2014 on Thai Airways. From BKK to Phuket, a very short flight. Business was empty as was first class. We were allowed to move around and go upstairs as we pleased. I will never forget this.
One of my best life experiences was flying PanAmerican Flight 002 around the world in 1982, in 20 days. JFK-LHR-(side trip to Berlin)-FRA-Istanbul-DEL (via Karachi)-BKK-HKG (KaiTak)-NAR-HON-LAX. PanAm couldn't fly point-to-point internally within US then. One of the Clippers (I photo'd each) was "Maid of the Seas", lost at Lockerbie. A rich whirlwind of unforgettable images, on a classy and classic standard-setting craft and carrier.

Yes all. Three. Airlines were the Best. especially. BI. (Branniff. International). the most thrilling part was just wondering what ( exterior) color of aircraft you would get; not to mention the multi-color seats. Oh the great days of flying, when you flew tourists class, and were treated like a human being ( royalty), and were actually fed real good portions of food, at no extra charge. Today you fly only because you have to get from point a to b. They just do not care
My family came to the US 'on the boat' in the early 60's...just before I was born, but in the early and mid 70's, we'd spend summers back in Germany and that meant (usually) a Lufthansa 747. What a thrill. I wish everyone could have experienced that. Two meals! Snacks! Actual film movies! Hot towels!
I absolutely adore the 747s! Living in Hawaii in the 1970s, that’s almost all we had flying back to the mainland. It was United to the West Coast, Braniff 747 SPs to Dallas, and eventually Delta joined the pack to Atlanta and Dallas, flying L1011s . I even had the pleasure of flying on a Pan Am 747 in 1982 from Bombay India, back to Honolulu with a stop overnight in Kowloon. The last 747 I flew was United from Los Angeles to Sydney Australia and that was in 1997. I fly several times a year but sadly, none of the wide bodies are 747s any more 😢 Thank you for putting together this wonderful video 🙏😊
Privileged to fly the Queen on two separate trips from United States to Australia. One with Northwest Airlines and the other with United Airlines. Also TWA from New York to Cairo. Always felt safe and comfortable ❤
Have been lucky to fly twice long haul upstairs in biz class (years ago Hong Kong 747-400 and more recently Seoul 747-800). Great experience. Love the look of it still.

I've had the pleasure flying in a brand new -400 from Paris to Frankfurt with LH. Reason: This was a ferry flight of the new bird to Europe and instead of completely empty they took the last step with passengers. Nice experience with the smell of a new a/c as well.

The last 747 I flew was with Philippine Airlines from Tokyo Narita to Manila in 2015. The air conditioning system was busted, but at least I got to fly the 747 one last time.
I've flown the Jumbo with KLM from Amsterdam to Beijing and Air China from Shenzen to Beijing. This was '05 and '06 . Nice planes- sorry to see them disappear from the sky.

I got lucky going to the US about 10 years ago on an Air NZ 747. Memorable flight, something about the Queen that just makes flying on board an experience.
I flew back last year on the Lufthansa Boeing 747-400 back on October 14,2022 (D-ABVX) and back on October 17,2022 (D-ABVZ). It was a nice experience. Just wish I didn’t get the aisle seating. May go this year on Lufthansa 747-400 again. Noticed the Lufthansa Boeing 747-8 came here to Toronto a few weeks too.
1997; Virgin from Orlando to Heathrow; Upstairs, business class. A+++. Best flight ever!
About two decades ago I was in the Manila airport when a freighter run off the runway forcing the airport to be closed. We waited at the airport for a few hours and China Airlines we booked decided to cancel all flights that day. We went to the Cathay Pacific counter and asked them if they would fly that evening. They told us they plan to have one flight later that night, so we decided to wait At around 11pm a CX 747-400 finally arrived, fully loaded, combining all the passengers from the two or three flights that day. Turn around was quick, we got in the plane and found out there were less than 5 pax in total in the main deck. And the take off was like the shortest one I ever had in any kind of aircraft,. From a standstill, rev engines , release brakes and in a few short seconds rotate and we're off.

Flew back in 2017 from California to Japan. The flight was fantastic. The sad part was not being able to watch our plane take off and land.
This plane is very close to my heart, Because its an iconic Engineering Marvel of our times, And flying in it was a childhood dream and I finally flew in it when I went to Europe to do my Masters in 2000 and flew home Yearly once back home on Lufthansa. Lufthansa also gave me a Scale model of this Iconic Jumbo the "Queen of The Skies". Lots of memories with this plane though.
I spent a lot of time flying for business in the 90s and early 2000s. My favorite aircraft was the 747, business class on the upper deck. Lots of fond memories flying British Air.
Our Son does, he works for Atlas Airfreight and is in training to fly the 747 right now.
There is an interesting documentary out there describing why the 747 was designed with that "hump". At the time of its development, it was looking like supersonic was the future of passenger air travel.
Realizing that air freighters would not go supersonic, Boeing made the 747 dual purpose as the hump gives the room for the nose to be hinged. This allows the loading of large indivisible loads.
I recently flown on an Air China Boeing 747-400 in the Business class, it was absolutely unique and amazing for me

My first flight on one was a Continental Airlines 747-100 when I was a kid back in 1970. The upper deck was a bar. Very cool times.
December 1975. I was lucky to fly in a 747 on a leg from Chicago to Portland, Oregon that was continuing on to Hawaii.
I have flown on the 747 aircraft many times my first flight was on July 12th 1971 ,I will always remember that flight with Eastern Airlines from San Juan Puerto Rico to JFK New York City.

I flew to London from Cape Town South Africa on a 747 early 90s and back, then To Miami from Cape Town again the second time in 95 . Beautiful aircraft the 747s spacious and reliable. 👍
Your info is very INCOMPLETE... korean Air flies 747 all the way from Atlanta to Cebu ( Philippines ) i went home last year October 2022 and we took that flight ( 16hrs flight )
used to fly EVA Air 747s back to back from Vancouver to Taipei, i miss it so much.
I was a young mechanical engineer fresh out of school and went to work for Boeing in Structures, mid/late 80's. I worked on tB47-400 analysis, drawing release and manufacturing support. In early 90's I moved from engineering to Boeing customer training, Flight Crew Instructor on B747-400. Outside of Boeing I was flight instructing, flying 135 charters, part 91 Cooperate Jets. I trained pilots from all over the world. I eventually left Boeing to fly for the airlines. I am type rated and flew B737, B757 & B767 in passenger service domestically & globally. Great airplane, but never flew in passenger service.

I have flown in the upper deck of a Lufthansa 747 through a random upgrade in the early 90s. I saw a KAL beauty in July in Atlanta.
The last time I flew on a 747 was on BA flight from Changi to Heathrow back in 2010. Still remember that fondly.

We flew Coast to Coast NY to LA on Pan Am and TWA 747's in the 1970's and 1980's. Being the same age, I have always had an affinity for the Jumbo Jets!
When I was a kid my parents flew upstairs with me in coach down below. That's my distinct memory of 747s. I did fly Hong Kong to San Fran in the downstairs nose, 1st class on United, which was really cool because of the curve you can look a bit forward in flight.
Friendliest operator was JAL where economy passengers could ride upstairs, same hostess to feed pilots were also feeding travellers behind them. Quiet and comfy!
i flew a british airways 747 from vancouver to london in 2018. it was an old plane, but i was very happy to fly a 747 as the last time i flew on a 747 was a very long time ago. there is a mystic quality about the 747 that makes people happy 😍😍🤗🤗.
A pilot buddy of mine got the news he’d be upgrading to the 747 with BA. That was in March 2020. He never got to pilot one, as BA retired all 30+ jumbos immediately.
Coming from Munich, Germany and loving Thailand, I have been on a Thai 747 many times for Songkran celebration in Chiang Mai. Once on the way back, the very same 747 came to Chiang Mai in the morning, landed with me in Bangkok and moved on with me to Munich. What a nice memory! Never forget HS-TGF

For many years JAL routinely flew Tokyo to Osaka with their 747SP.
Today I suspect the shortest route flown by a widebody aircraft is Tel Aviv to Larnaca by El-Al B777.
Man as a kid you couldn't avoid these things, now they're almost all gone... Qantas flew their last one out in 2020 :(
I have flown on the 100, 200, and 300 variants, but never on the 400 and -8. I'm vacationing in Europe next summer and will definitely try to book a Lufthansa 747 flight to Europe.

I went mad and went business on an FRA-PVG return in 2019. So I’ve flown in the nose of a Lufthansa 747. Bucket list stuff!

Between 1997 and 2000 I regularly flew on 747's, as I was in a rock band that frequently toured internationally. I absolutely loved flying on the 747- the sheer size of the aircraft meant that it was reasonably quiet in the cabin, as the engines were quite a distance away.
One particularly memorable journey was flying Singapore Airlines in first class in 2000. It was the end of a particularly long and greulling promotional trip, and the record company upgraded our flights as a way of thanking us for our patience, as our tour itinerary kept being extended! While first class has obviously improved a lot in the 23 years since then, the food was brilliant, the seats were the most comfortable I'd ever travelled in, the flight attendants were great, and the whole experience was fantastic.
As my international music career wound down, the last time I flew in a 747 was back in 2004, between China and Taiwan- I believe it's known as 'the golden mile'.
I will definitely miss travelling on the 747, but I think what I will miss the most is seeing it cross the city sky at low altitude, preparing to land. It is such a majestic, beautiful aircraft- there will never be another quite like it.
Oldest 747's still flying are surely the USAF E4's based on 200 series airframes.
Dating back to the 1970s. Next to them 2 Presidential VC25As based on the -200 that have served as Air Force One since 1990 are spring chickens.
I've flown in the -100, -200 and -400 and now, the -8 Intercontinental. Never gets old.
I just saw one in sfo when i was landing last weekend, i made sure to point it out to my coworkers since they're slowly disappearing:(
2002 was on Qantas 747 airliner from KL to Sydney on route to Auckland NZ. Not that huge, I felt it was having like a bit longer and narrow body.
My first time flying on a 747 was in 1983 with Qantas QF1 from Frankfurt to Perth via Rome, Athens, Bombay (now Mumbai), Malé/Maldives. The elapsed travelling time was almost 24 hours!! It was a wonderful experience to fly with such a big and comfortable plane. It was a four-week voyage, and we visited Australia and New Zealand for the first time. Really amazing!😁
QF1 (QF0001 to be precise) has always been outbound SYD to LHR. QF2 is the inbound. And so on up the chain odd numbers outbound even numbers inbound.
QF ex Frankfurt until 2013 was designated QF11 since QF10 was SYD - FRA. Your flight number may have been QF11.
I’ve only flown a 747 twice and I fly pretty frequently internationally. My first flight in the late 70s was Tampa, FL to Miami, a deadhead flight and was one of only 3 or 4 passengers. The second was on Virgin Atlantic from London Heathrow to JFK probably in 2017ish. I’ve flown 757, 767, 777 and 787. I had a reservation to fly Quantas to Australia on an Airbus 380 from the U.S. in 2020, but the pandemic shut down travel to AU, so very disappointed to have missed that opportunity and now it may never happen.☹️😥
I am scheduled to fly Lufthansa from Munich to Toronto next month. I am now looking forward to that experience.

I flew on 747 united and delta back in the day to Hawaii… I wish more airlines still flew them.
To follow up, i flew with HL7642 and HL7631 to and from LAX. Nothing but mad respect for this aircraft, i love the way the engines are quiet and i love how it handled flying.
Also the most beautiful aircraft as well.
The first time I was on a Jumbo jet was in 1982 and we flew PIA Pakistan International Airlines from Manila to Tokyo. It was back in 1986 when I immigrated to the US on a Northwest Airlines from Manila via Tokyo to Chicago. The last time I was on the Jumbo Jet was in 2017 when we went to Amsterdam on KLM from Chicago. I remember half of the 747 was cargo and the front is passenger.
Not recently have I flown on a jumbo jet. But in 1979 we took a trip to Europe. From LAX to JFK I got to fly in an L1011 and from JFK a 747. Both TWA.
I flew the 747-100 and -200 for UPS. We had the old Steam gauges (analog) and a flight engineer.
Traveling from Australia to Thailand I have spent my young life in a 747-400 in Thai Airways going from Sydney to Bangkok as a stop over, but it’s sad now that 2018 was the last time I flew in a 747-400 which now they switch to a 777-300ER. Those memories I will never forgot because I loved flying in those Jumbo Jets and they were also part of my childhood, in fact, they were the first airplane I first remembered flying on
The dc-3 Dakota and the Boeing 747 are the most beautiful airplanes ever build.

Flew many Canadian Airlines flights from Vancouver to Bangkok return in the 90's on 747-475s. Also some Quantas flights from Vancouver to Brisbane.
Lufthansa operated the 747-430 D-ABVY on 17th June, 2023 on a service from FRA to PMI and return as LH1158, 1159 respectively.

I missed out on the 747 experience, and I feel the loss. I've done large planes like 707s, DC10s, and A380s but I would love to go to Germany and fly a 747 before it is too late, and the quality standards of food, etc decline due to the big companies retiring their fleet.

Yes and very silent, I did Miami to Frankfurt upstairs in Business Class - amazing. Sorry to see they are being retired too and production ended.
My dad works for the people at Boeing who make these amazing Boeing planes and said there will be no airlines who will operate it soon because of better and more efficient planes but they are making larger versions of the GER9 for the Boeing 777 called the turbo fan for a larger wide body aircraft

I (and my family of then 4) had a flight from London to NYC in 1971? It was then or the year before. I'm a little foggy in my memory at the age of 79. It was the last leg of a Pan Am flight that started (for us) in Istanbul. The legs from there to Frankfort and then London were on a 707. In London we changed planes to a brand new 747! The delay we encountered in London's departure was caused by the late arrival of the food. The logistics of the serving this plane had not caught up with the flight schedule! (Pan Am flight 1 went around the world in one direction, east or west, and flight 2 went the other direction. I don't remember which one I was on, 1 or 2, but was from east to west.)
Look forward finally board Jumbojet aka Boeing 747 in Frankfurt am Main . I thought I would never experience 747 but I am happy to board this iconic plane.
korean air has the last ever built passenger 747-8i. I don't think I was on that particular plane when I was coming back to LAX from Seoul ICN but I was on a 747-8 though (in economy class sadly, was not able to get the award seat).

One and only time I flew a 747 was a British Airways in 2014 on a shorter flight from Heathrow to Moscow. Plane was probably half full, if even that. So glad I got to do it, and so sad they're all getting retired...
I must admit I found the 777 a more comfortable plane. Flew once in a 747 in business class in the hump from Amsterdam to Hong Kong and it was quite an experience.

My first 747 was from Kuala Lumpur to London 1984 vv. Then, Kuala Lumpur-London (Malaysia Airlines)-Chicago (TWA)1985. 1987 LAX-KUL (MH) vv and final 747 flight 1989 LAX-KUL. How I wish airlines still yearn to use The Queen.

I will miss the 747 So many trips to Asia I lost count. The A 380 is great but feels quite different. Nothing compares to up stairs privacy in 747 business class

In 1979 I was working for an avionics manufacturer and flew from San Francisco to Sidney Australia on a Qantas 747. After leaving a stop over in Hawaii, I was invited to the cockpit. We visited, drank coffee, ate pineapple and crossed the equator.

The first 747 I flew was an orange Braniff form DFW to HNL. I flew Air Pakistani 747 in '76. I've flow Air France 747 HOU to CDG and return. I flew Pan American 747 from JFK to Zurich and return. I've flown Lufthansa 747 freighter combo form DFW to Frankfurt twice and return. And some more I can't remember...but always a lot of fun... OH.. BA 747 London to New Delhi return... etc....
Well,we LOST the chance to fly Concorde again but still have the opportunity to fly the other Queen the 747. I pray that due to the increase in civilian passenger travel that more airlines take more 747s out from that desert and bring those beautiful iconic birds up to the skies, where they belong.
