Thanks for watching. This Husqvarna mower had a very strange modification on that baffled me. The problem was that it would start and run but after a single pass it dies. Did we really need this mod or is someone just being extra cautious.
Good video I love seeing the problem not being the carb for once
you and me both
i have same lawn mower sitting in our yard right now, i was hoping i can fix it..but after you done all the trial and error in this video, i might just buy another one to save me couple hours of trying to fix. lol. your 10 minute video saved me the hassle. thanks
thanks for the comment, I appreciate it.
I have a helpful hint for about the easiest way to drain gas from your mower. Use the hoses that fill kerosene heaters. Just have it going in the opposite direction. Instead of putting it in the tank, you can turn that hose around and remove it from the tank with just a squeeze of the bulb. Easy as pie sweety.
That's a great idea
Very informative video. The best fix here is an engine swap from your hoard.
Its still a good engine but if it gets much more cumbersome then yes it will be changed out.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Ok. :D The resale value, modified, might be a bit low. That was my thinking. Thank you for sharing.
I would've left the carb alone like you did and worked with the dashpot. Looked like someone ground off part of the mount so it could be moved back to open the choke disc further. Maybe the choke was staying closed too much and loading the engine up. That's my 2 cents and you did a fine job. A-PLUS! Blessings!
yes it certainly someone was Messing with it.
I'm not sure, but I would never say no to a carb clean. They cause all sorts of havoc if clogged. But I wonder too about the coil. Sometimes when they start to fail it's when its heated up. 2 minutes would do that. When it was running it sounded pretty good. So I would check the coil.
That is a pretty idea. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
There was likely a problem with the carburetor at some point and they added the manual lever to alleviate that problem and then just decided to leave it so they would have manual control.
that's my feeling too.
I'm not the entire way through the video, but check the fuel lines, needle seat, and coil. Compression is somewhat low on that engine judging from the sound and how long the hot start took. Check the valve adjustments. Mostly a well worn 15ish year old mower that's not far from retirement.
You are absolutely correct. Everything you said was true. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
No,if the carburettor ain't broken then don't fix it.
One cause of hard starting when hot with the old Briggs and Stratton Choke O matic carburettors on my mower was a loss of engine compression, even though the engine ran with 75 PSI of compression,it took 6 pulls to start it when it was cold instead of 2 or 3,when it was hot & shut off for 10 minutes it was either very difficult to start or it wouldn't start when the Choke butterfly was closed.
The carburettor diaphragm which operates the choke override system was brand new as well, with new piston rings fitted it read at 92 PSI of compression once they bedded in,the engine starts much easier now whether it's hot or cold !
Thank you Russell Booth for the information I appreciate it
You may of checked the oil level first offline, just in case it was low.
The modification wasn’t too good to begin with, you noticed the slack on the arm and adjusted it so the vacuum improved.
If it stopped after a few minutes obviously not carby then if vacuum was fine and it still stopped.
I’ve had a faulty spark plug do that and it’s was new out of packet, otherwise an an alternative is the mower gets hot the coil could be weak and close to being replaced, knowing that a good coil would read on the multi meter in the 9s but a poor coil would be in the bad 12.5 ish, as an extreme case it is possible.
I know, this one was just weird to me.
I just finished a Toro recycler that somehow had a cracked tank at the center seam. It was filthy all over and kept shutting off even though the gas was below the crack. Every piece that comes off will look brand new before it goes back on or if needs cleaning. I could never reassemble anything leaving it under the conditions I saw in this video. There's your heat. At the very least, get a brush and a blower. A few shots of carb cleaner does very well too. I just can't.
nice motto.
Great, my husband just bought this lawnmower second hand last night because our old one died and we couldn't afford a brand new one. It runs and then dies and this is just more work then we hoped for.
it's just a part of the mowing experience but the fix could be pretty easy
I am not here to participate in a discussion of my or other people’s opinions.
I am here for solutions to my problem.
Perhaps upfront say that this will be a class participation event but no answer will be provided
I want my 10 minutes back
lol I'm here for answers but I get met with more questions at the end of his video. Best part of all this was your comment!
Nicely done!
thank you Mark Lang
My next-door neighbor told me that there’s dirt in the carburetor that you have to clean out all the Jets I have a Huska Vanna with the same issue it’ll run for a minute and then stall out I’ve clean the carburetor like twice same issue it’ll run for a few minutes and install a brand new air filter !
so you did get it running
I have a year old Husqvarna rear wheel self-propelled mower with the Honda engine and went to mow with it today and I noticed it started running a little rough, coughing a little and quit running. It took me about a minute to get it started back up and then it quit on me within about 15 seconds. Took about 30 seconds to restart it and same thing again so I put it in the garage and mowed with our Snapper rear engine Hi-Vac rider. I haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet, it got dark on me but I'm going to check it out tomorrow.
Try cracking the gas cap and see if it makes a difference. Does it have a manual choke?
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I took the gas cap off and looked in the gas tank and put the cap back on, it stalled within seconds.... I'll try loosening it tomorrow. It has an automatic choke, I believe it's one that uses the thermo wax...
@@bodeine454 thanks, also do you use gasoline with ethanol?
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Yeah, I believe it says can contain up to 10% around here at the gas pump, not sure about all of the gas stations but most.
@@bodeine454 if you've been leaving gas in the tank for awhile, then your needle or seat could be swollen and needs replacing.
Think some previous owner wasn't as smart as he thought he was.
The previous owner was more handy then some i have seen. I just wish I understood their logic.
I would have put a piece of fuel line on the actuator rod to take up the slack instead of slotting the holes.
That's a fantastic idea. Thanks I'll have to try that next time.
That problem must be pretty common on Kohler engines, my friends have a laun tractor that will run and move but when you Rev it up it starts to whale, and stalls,
And yes if you are curious, I am a 12 year old with a friend a month older, and hid parents own a equp compiny
I'm not sure, because I've only worked on a few Kohler tractor engines.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE well, I don't know, but is is a little disappointing, where toy has a problem, the golfcart engine doesn't run, the 3 wheeler is out of service because of throttle, and the launtractor is just weird, and we don't when use it for mowing
Regardless if I was not going into the carb, I would have cleaned the outside. All that junk does nothing helpful to the linkages and could pose a fire hazard. A couple of minutes with an air hose and/or a brush is all it would take. I would also have replaced the filthy air filter.
very true
no need to tear into the carb but I would of checked out the part on the muffler to see it it moved the chock back when hot . I dont know if you did that .
yes unfortunately I did that but off camera. thank you for the comment I appreciate it.
Thank u for the video it help it mine starts on one pull
Glad it helped
Sorry about the dictated put in words I didn't say I just need the little black pump piece that screws down on there with the hose hooked up on the back of it I broke that off
sorry I won't be able to help with the information you've given me.
The shutting off after 1 minute sounds to me like a bad needle seat not allowing the float to go high enough. This could be causing it to run out of fuel.
this one was a weird one, they had a choke bypass that was getting in the way, of normal operation
Good job if it is broken do not fix it.
Thank you Pete Froud for the comment I appreciate it
Kind of late to ask, but what was the reason this kept happening? I’d like to know please. . Thanks
well during my testing it never happened to me. I basically put the mower back together minus the extra stuff the put on it. If were you, I'd take off the fuel cap, spray carb cleaner into the 4 little holes on the underside of the cap and then use compressed air to clean out the holes. The holes are part of the venting system and if they're clogged with dirt then it'll cause the engine to starve of fuel after a couple of minutes of running.
I broken the black you're fooling with from my Husqvarna Kohler push mower with a hose connect on the back on that little plastic part I broke that dang classic far too often where could I get another little black piece to fit on the carburetor like that that little pump I don't even know what it's called
sounds pretty bad.
The choke was sticking. So they held it open. I've done it with a twisti tie off a bread sack. Guess I'm Sally Sue. 😁
nice explanation
I have a HU 700 Husqvarna it starts then dies within 20 seconds???? I thought it was the engaged cable! Cause was crimp
So you got it fixed then?
Any idea what would cause a loud knocking sound from the engine that starts on one pull and runs. both valves like new same with piston and ring. gears ok. no metal shavings.
The oil slinger might have come loose?otherwise it's rod knock.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGERod knock? i took the slinger off and practically rebuilt the whole thing and put it back together.even used the dang torque wrench ;-)
@@WV591 hmm. Did you plasti gauge the rod cap to check the oil clearance?
I had a tinking sound from my Briggs mower. Turned out to be the muffler rotted out from underneath.
Well what should have been done is to clean & lubricate all.the moving part ,s that enigine looked nasty plus a new air fliter & spark plug would also help.out my husquavarn awd has the honda 190 cc engine on it i,ve yet to have any issues with it got the oil by honda also the air fliter & soark plug just got to make myself get out there & do the maintaince on it see in your next video
Thank you Robert Mailhos for the comment I always appreciate your input
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE any time young man stay safe out there
Thank you I will
Try not to use it in the heat of the afternoons. Those GCV190s have a history of the exhaust valve guide migrating out of the case and breaking rockers. Keep it clean and cool as possible. I just sold my Husqvarna AWD with the GCV190 engine. It was a nice machine.
Sounds like it;s low on oil.
it was damage a long time ago from low oil. Adding more oil won't change it.
I only see Husqvarna really good at hand held tools. Their mowers on the other hand though our painfully mediocre and you are better off with a Honda. Who need four wheel drive on a mower anyway? All you need are good wheels
Yes Husqvarna mowers are not my favorite mower either.
Where can I get a actuator part like that when that for my for my carburetor on my Kohler Husqvarna push mower
ereplacementparts dot com
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE thanks
no problem
that carburetor looks like it needs a good cleaning
Yes it does. Makes me wish I had an ultrasonic cleaner
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE good stuff that will do it mate cheers from Australia we have Victa Lawn Mowers with a very similar engine from Briggs and Stratton and they are a common type too
@@Patrick4959 I'll have to look at that model and compare.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE yep all good and not that hard
My mower is only 2 years old and used a handful of times. I have no mechanical skills.....So I'm going to pitch it and just buy a new mower.
that's a good choice. sometime its just easier.
Can I have your old mower then? Lol
You should clean first then look for the issue problem,i saw dirt keeting in to the carb...
you are absolutely right
yes I do
Thank you Randy Scott for the comment I appreciate it
Do you think that is what’s wrong with my lawnmower
does your mower have an autochoke?
Yes
Did you ever sort out why the mower stops after a minute. I have one doing the same thing. It has auto choke but slightly different (briggs with air vane). I have swapped coils, changed fuel, plug, carburetors, fuel tank, fuel cap. Tried everything I can think of. Just wondering if you got yours sorted out? Love the videos by the way
In this case it was that weird bypass thing that was causing it to choke and die. That's why it was removed. Have you tried replacing the fuel line itself? It may have collapsed internally and is restricting fuel flow.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE yes I did but thanks for the tip. The brand new aftermarket carb I bought had a float that was not level. The original carb float was level though and did the same thing. So if anyone has any further ideas, I'm open to trying anything
I would try replacing the needle seat on the original carb instead.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I'll give it a try and see what happens. Thanks
Didn't learn much from this video.
thanks I'll keep that in mind.
I hate this! Mine wont start, 550EX. and no red choke 'thing' on it (tell i am female). So, it started, great, then died after 3 ft of mowing. Could it be old gasoline? i cant even deal with carb, on the carb (urator) only bread. ugh.
how long will the engine run of you dont try and cut any grass?
was there ever a fix to this?
it didn't need a fix, turns out the weird wire bypass they had was the issue.
Informative video, but the brand name is pronounced "Huus-kvarna" and nothing else.
thanks
I would have left all that plastic off.would get more air and less hassle.
that's a possibility too
