My thoughts on my list (I hope someone is interested): Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (1973). A young guy that wasn't very well known and socially awkward somehow makes an album almost by himself that broke rules, became a soundtrack for a classic movie and become (sort of) the foundation for a huge record company. If you are a nerd of guitar this album might be for you. Van Halen - Van Halen (1978). Not many guitarists have had more copycats than Eddie Van Halen but it's not all about that. Everyone performs strong here, the production is fantastic and while being a albums for guitarists it's also a great partyalbum for the casual rock fan. Blue Öyster Cult - Blue Öyster Cult (1972). Like Wishbone Ash this album is not a bonfide classic but it is very enjoyable and original. Most people think the band gradually got better and maybe so but there is a certain style to this debut that stands on it's own. The Doors - The Doors (1967). A real classic. If you think Everybody Hurts, Losing My Religion or Daysleeper is speaking for their whole catalog, you are wrong. I think many people who knows several hits have no clue this album or the one's that followed even exists. Sort of a shame. I can appreciate much from R.E.M. over the years and if you never "got them". This might do the trick. Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill (1972). I know music-nerds know about Steely Dan but they are not a band the causal listener knows much about. Listening to them.. I don't understand why. While being complicated music in a way it's very catchy and easy listening. Both Pop and Rock fans should be able to like this album very easily. The Band - Music From Big Pink (1968): These guys was mostly famous for being on some of Bob Dylans most beloved records (to this day!) and wanted to bransch out on their own. Eric Clapton talks more about this band than his own music and they are a bit of a rarity musically. Cream, Hendrix Experience, The Doors, The Beatles and soon Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath along with many others was toward a certain direction musically. These guys weren't. They took a left path and made some damn good music on the way. It's not really Bob Dylan nor say Hendrix but like a missing piece of the puzzle. I didn't get them at first but with time I really liked it and this album is one of the best.

A brilliant review. Thank you for including “Are You Experienced”, “In The Court Of The Crimson King” and “The Doors”. I would have included the first Emerson Lake And Palmer album. You are absolutely spot on regarding “In The Court Of The Crimson King”. I’m old enough and fortunate enough to have seen King Crimson, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors live in the late 60s. Those performances were stunning and revelatory. I was never the same. Bravo!
Some great choices! My favorite debut would be Chicago Transit Authority. Boston's debut is outstanding. Steely Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill is another of my favorites.

i agree Boston best, then the cars, then bad company, the doors, then foreigner, pearl jam 10, van halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd Poronouced,Led Zeppelin, Hendrix
That "Marquee Moon" didn't make your list is a wonder. It is a debut album so utterly astonishing that it near completely overshadowed the remainder of Television's career.
Martin Hannet truly was the George Martin of Joy Division. It's in it's own universe. I'm glad you added Leonard Cohen as well. 'Stories Of The Street' is my favorite Leonard Cohen song. Joy Division/New Order are my favorites but for debut albums I have to pick The Stone Roses.
Leonard Cohen is a great choice, it would be on my list if I made one, I'm not a good list maker when it comes to the best of or most favorite. So much excellent music to choose from but I enjoy your lists as well as your reasons and thoughts on them.
Hi Barry! My favourite era for quality rock music is the 70's so I've chosen my favourites from this decade. Difficult to put them in any order but my number one is: Television - Marquee Moon. Others that I consider classics are: Steely Dan - Can't Buy A Thrill , Santana - Santana , Dire Straits - Dire Straits , Montrose - Montrose , The Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus , Kate Bush - The Kick Inside , Boston - Boston , Rush - Rush and the debut album from my favourite band: Blue Oyster cult - Blue Oyster Cult.
A well chosen list and argued with articulate flair...but somewhat surprised to not see the Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks. Still, a superb short list!
Just by coincidence (?) three albums on your list involve John Cale (Horses, Stooges, VU) who also produced another remarkable debut for Jonathan Richman - The Modern Lovers, which is also a classic (recorded in 1972 but released in 1976, Pablo Picasso and Roadrunner alone are worth to have this album).
Smith and her band did not get in with Cale in the slightest. They rejected every suggestion he made. Eventually, Cale asked Smith why she hired him as producer. Smith said it was because Cale's records always sounded so clear. "You fool" said Cale "you should have hired my engineer in that case!" Oh, and Cale also did the Happy Mondays' debut....
Great picks. I would also consider... Van Halen--Van Halen The Cars--The Cars Pearl Jam--Ten The Smiths--The Smiths Boston--Boston Black Sabbath--Black Sabbath Led Zeppelin--Led Zeppelin I
1.The Doors 2.In The Court Of The Crimson King 3.Never Mind The Bollocks 4.Horses 5.Five Leaves Left 6.Pieces Of The Sky 7.Marquee Moon 8.The Modern Lovers 9.Forces of Victory 10.Grace
For me, the best debut album is Killing Joke's album. Not only was it brilliant, but was a whole ne sound that inspired a new type of Post Punk - Industial.
10. Kate Bush- The Kick Inside. Beautiful songs and voice with thoughtful lyrics. The beginning of a great 5 album run. 9. Devo- Are We not Men: We are Devo. Very unique, creative and fun to listen to. Fantastic production by Eno. 8. Boston- Boston. Clear, clean, powerful, sonic rock n roll. Several classic songs. Every song is very good to great. 7. Jimi Hendrix- Are you Experienced? Ground breaking instrumentation, especially guitar of course. Classic songs. Extremely influential. 6. King Crimson- In the Court of the Crimson King. 21st century schizoid man may be the best first song by any band. Progressive genius. 5. Led Zeppelin- Led Zeppelin (1). Great hard rock with psychedelic edge. A new sound that led to the legendary career. Also very influential. 4. Pink Floyd- Piper at the Gates of Dawn. True psychedelic cleverness with Syd Barrett when he was still in his head enough to create great music. 3. The Doors- The Doors. Must listen for anyone who enjoys music. It's about freedom, life experience, darkness and drugs and so much more. 2. Eno- Here Comes the Warm Jets. As creative as an album can get in every aspect and one of the best guitar solos ever by Robert Fripp on Baby's on Fire. Extremely influential. 1. The Cars- The Cars. I've literally have heard every song on Pandora rotations. Can't say that about any other album All the songs are great.
Please please me, the 1975, piper at the gates of dawn, the libertines are among my personal favourites but certainly there are some superb collections here that cannot be argued like king crimson and the velvets.
I usually don't comment on things but this resonated with me. Having mostly seen your videos with a prog rock perspective, I was expecting a lot of Genesis/Floyd/etc in here but I have to say that there is a wonderful diversity in your choices. I can't argue with 8 of your selections - maybe not top 10 but all extremely good - and the other two are the Zappa and Presley albums which I don't know so I can't judge. Thank you for that - it helps me believe that I can trust the things that you recommend. Interesting that John Cale is involved in 3 of the albums and also another that I would consider - The Modern Lovers first album
Nice idea and great choices. The debut albums from Patti Smith, Jimmy Hendrix.King Crimson, Velvet Underground. The Doors are also among the best ever written. I would add also the fantastic Led Zeppelin first album. Once again an excellent list.
Impossible to make a definitive list, but he did a good job. Love Joy Division at #6. 5 glaring omissions for me: The Clash, The Who Sing My Generation. Never Mind the Bollocks, My Aim is True, and Piper at the Gates of Dawn .
🇨🇦 Greetings from Canada! 🇨🇦 Sitting on my couch, sippin’ a beer, surfin’ UA-cam...and your awesome channel appears! A few hours later, and I feel like we’re old friends! I love the way you articulate your thoughts on the music that ignites your soul...and happily tapped “subscribe”. Sitting in a pub with you, enjoying several pints, and chatting away into the wee small hours about music would be time very well spent, I’m sure! Anyways, great list! Like others have mentioned, I was surprised you didn’t include Zeppelin 1, but that’s neither here nor there - it is, after all, YOUR list...! One addition I might make, perhaps an honourable mention if not a replacement of one already included, would be Jeff Buckley’s “Grace”, which regularly gets played front to back in my home. Again, great list! Thanks for putting together these videos! Hope all is well in your world, and you and yours are staying safe during these crazy days of “Pandemic-alooza”...!
The Boomtown Rats eponymous lp from 1977 and Liverpool band Clinic's Internal Wrangler (2000) are two of my favourites. Love XTC but their first two albums are pretty mixed. Great channel btw.
Hi Barry, What an incredible list. I will not even attempt... I find yours covers many genre and cannot dispute any one of your nominations to the Top 10. Especially the Doors and In the Court of the Crimson King... which would be the template of the prog for without this there would be no ELP, Genesis or Yes. PS - Have you received the new Mothers box set. Wishing you a great week. God bless and keep well, Tino
I was old enough to attend the Hyde Park gig although I was luckier still to attend a free arts festival at Goldsmith's College, South London a couple of days before. King Crimson played on the back lawn of the college with an accompanying light show and strobes. Amazing times.
Dude, you sure chose the classy stuff of the 60ties. And my hat off to you for choosing the incredible CK album as number one. Have you heard the story of the painter of the cover? If you listen to Greg Lakes life album "Songs of a Lifetime" from 2013 he tells the story of this young gifted man , who apparently very shortly after died.
@@classicalbum - Absolutely!! 😂 The question marks were just as if to say, "food for thought", not, "why not these"....(btw, if people would not want to consider some of these "debuts", I could hear that assertion.) Happy New Year!
I appreciate your opinion, but you left out a couple of great ones. Led Zeppelin 1 should be on anyones list. Imagine buying that album, taking it home, putting it on the turntable and Good Times Bad Times comes on! Pearl Jams Ten is a masterpiece. Lastly, The Cars debut album had the most hits for any debut album. Keep up the good work.
There are a few great ones that I missed Punk Floyd's 'Piper at the gates of Dawn' for one. Also I love the first album by Tim Buckley and the debut by the Allman Bros... but I wanted to keep it to ten
Pearl Jams Ten is great album and a solid choice for top ten debut album list. But Led Zeppelin debut, to my opinion, is not. As much as I love them, Led Zeppelin at the time were just another incarnation of the Yardbirds. Half of the songs on the album were played by the Yardbirds, the other half lifted from other blues artists. It is a great sounding album but I wouldn't include it in my top ten list.
@@buzniak1196 I think you are missing the point of this discussion. Best debut album. I understand that all the songs were borrowed from someone else, but the album is still Led Zeppelin. And the album is one of the greatest ever.
I've enjoyed all of your lists so far. It's your gig, you set up the UA-cam account etc. I disagreed with your choice in the Roxy Music worst to best, but know that subjectivity is the bright light of navigation here. And so, of course, I'm going to suggest Roxy Music's debut should be on this list because it was so startling, so different and so unprecedented. Surely Dr Feelgood's 'Down by the Jetty' has to be circling near any top ten debuts list. I'd point as well to Weezer's 'Blue' album, plus The Chameleons' debut 'Script of the Bridge'; Kate Bush's 'The Kick Inside' has certainly got to be considered too. But your list clearly reflects a certain taste in music and it's not a bad list at all. Okay, you're caught up with the Crimsons, some of it revolves around doors, you take joy in division, I'm sure even your own mother wouldn't freak out at Frank - though it might be a strange experience. How come you didn't mention Elvis nicking his cover design from The Clash? Interesting post. I'm never going to see a 'best of' list anywhere I fully agree with. In the mean time this was pretty good. Keep doing your lists.
So many excellent debut albums...here are two you didn't mention: CAPTAIN BEEFHEART AND THE MAGIC BAND-TROUT MASK REPLICA and PINK FLOYD-THE PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN. Thanks for a great show as always!
I must say though that "Trout mask replica" was not Captain Beefhart's debut album, that goes to "Safe as milk" which also would be in my top-20 list of "best debut albums"
I very briefly worked with Noel Redding on a concert he put on re: The Noel Redding Band at the venue I used to work at in the early 2000s. Unfortunately when it came to the gig itself he had to revert to guitar as he had rather bizarrely fallen out of his window days beforehand and wasn't strong enough to hold the bass. His lead guitar playing was nonetheless excellent.
Your list is excellent! Here is mine in chronological order: The Beatles Please Please Me, Pink Floyd Piper at the Gates of Dawn, The Doors I, Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced, , Led Zeppelin I, The Pretenders, The Cars, Joy Division Unknown Pleasures, My Bloody Valentine Isn't Anything, Portishead Dummy.
If not in the top ten, then certainly in the top 15; Led Zeppelin 's first, The Car's first, Van Halen's first, and of course, Chicago Transit Authority. Overlooking these is a minor tragedy.
1. Mountain - Climbing 2. Led Zeppelin I 3. Pretenders 4. Pink Floyd - Piper at the gates of dawn 5. Queen I 6. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures 7.. Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come 8. Black Sabbath 9. Iggy Pop - The Idiot 10. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced ...
1. Court of the Crimson King 2. Are You Experienced 4. Emerson Lake & Palmer 3. The Doors 5. Led Zeppelin 1 6. Mike Oldfield 7. Santana 8. Steely Dan 9. Floyd 10. Pistols
Van Halen I, Led Zeppelin I and Metallica's KIll 'Em All are 3 of my favorite debut releases of all time. A little more "Metal" than many people may like, though?
Great content as always and covered some of my favourite albums. Thought you might mention "Queen" or "Sultans of Swing" but whilst I may not always agree with your opinion, you continue to give convincing arguments for your picks. Thank you!
Everyone has their own taste in Genres I respectfully agree with your choices 👍👍 These days, the technology is just not the same anymore And going to see a band is hit&miss in the 50’60’& 70’ was a different experience LIVE WHAT YOU SAW IS WHAT YOU HEARD I personally have Transit Authority in my top 10 You Sir most definitely know your music and bands TY
Great list. I would've put 'Are You Experienced' as #1 or #2. I know it's a tough call and subjective. However, Jimi changed the course of rock guitar for another 55+ years. Thanks for your insightful work!
Glad Jimi Hendrix & Patti Smith are on this list, though many albums here I've not heard before. My top ten 1st studio albums are: Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced Big Country: The Crossing Talking Heads: '77 Marillion: Script For A Jester's Tear Melissa Etheridge: Melissa Etheridge Heart: Dreamboat Annie Yardbirds: For Your Love Goldfrapp: Felt Mountain Big Brother & The Holding Company: Big Brother & The Holding Company Jeff Beck (Group): Truth
Great list , I am very interested in listening to a few of these to expand my taste in other categories of music, thank you for videos I enjoy your outlook on music as a whole
No arguments with the choices so thoughtfully presented in this vid, or those in the comments section. As worthy as they all are, for me the most surprising and mind bending first listen to a debut album was a midnight listen to the newly released Violent Femmes debut. Stunning at the time. I’ll never forget that experience.
Saw them play the Birmingham Odeon with April Wine and somebody I can't recall.According to research Sledgehammer. No wonder I forgot. I'm sure they are stand up rockers
I have a question, sir. Do you focus on what's generally considered "classic rock" in your personal music listening, hence the channel, or did you make a conscious choice to focus your channel on classic rock? Hope that made sense.
I'd also mention: Crosby Stills and Nash Dreamboat Annie - Heart Led Zeppelin Black Sabbath Very 'eavy, Very 'umble - Uriah Heep Can't Buy A Thrill - Steely Dan Piper At The Gates Of Dawn - Pink Floyd Electric Music For The Mind And Body - Country Joe and The Fish Other Way Out - Sun Dial Incense And Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock Twice Removed From Yesterday - Robin Trower Holy Diver - Dio Blizzard Of Oz - Ozzy
Brilliantly done - some picks in there of which I’m not familiar with or don’t know so will be checking those out. On the whole, cannot disagree with these mentions. Joy Division was a superb choice. Probably the best and definitely my fave of the albums listed My top 5 debuts, slightly more indie sounding perhaps, goes like this: 1 The Stone Roses 2 Joy Division 3 Oasis 4 Black Sabbath 5 Led Zeppelin
Great list! Here’s mine: - Nina Hagen Band - Nina Hagen Band - Roxy Music - Roxy Music - Heart - Dreamboat Annie - Dire Straits - Dire Straits - Kate Bush - The Kick Inside - Blondie - Blondie - UK - UK - Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant - Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus - Pretenders - Pretenders - Steely Dan - Can’t Buy A Thrill Ok, that’s 11 albums. What can you do…
Not read through the comments, so apologies in advance for any duplication.. ELP (self titled) CAMEL (self titled) Chris Squire (Fish out of Water) Steve Hackett (Voyage of the Acolyte) Bo Hansson (Lord of the Rings) Mike Oldfield (Tubular Bells) Plus a much lesser known band .. Autumn (Oceanworld) sadly their only offering, but damn good... A mention for a couple of not so proggy, not so rocky debuts.. Christopher Cross (self titled) Suzanne Vega (self titled) Another great post Barry 👍
Hi very interesting thanks, I would consider the thoughts of emerlist davjak by the Nice and Elp's first, Btw the nice toured towards the end of 1967 with Hendrix. Pink Floyd Amen corner and the Move ffs. That must have been a hell of a night! Cheers
I won’t try to say what should get bumped, but Zeppelin’s debut was stunning Several individual tracks often around 6 minutes long, had more raw emotional power than most other other bands could even imagine
The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velver Underground, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd, Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division, In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson, Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath.
Well, I agree with Crimson and Hendrix. The other 8 would be Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, Nirvana, The Cars, Mahavishnu Orchestra, ELP, Santana, and without question THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST DEBUT ALBUM OF ALL TIME -- Boston.
I started watching thinking that my favourite debut album would be overlooked, though I guessed that The Doors and The Velvet Underground would be there, but you didn't let me down. Number Six - Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division. Thank you!
A dark, but wonderful album.

I love the album pity most of the tracks have been ripped off from other artists
Good list but you forgot to include GnR's debut.
I love U2 but their first album is good but not a classic. Boston is very good for sure.

Bravo!
Agree 100% with Crimson , E.L.P. and Hendrix . Timeless classics all 3 .
Some great choices! My favorite debut would be Chicago Transit Authority. Boston's debut is outstanding. Steely Dan's Can't Buy a Thrill is another of my favorites.
Terry Kath was and his work created is what made him the best
Jimi Hendrix once quoted “he is the greatest Guitarist ever”
Agreed. Adding The Cars and Queen to your list would be my humble suggestion. 😊
Excellent list, very well thought out! I would also add (honorary mentions?) Brian Eno’s Here comes the warm jets, and Roxy Music’s debut album...
Oooooh. I love Here Comes The Warm Jets. Great album.
Pink Floyd - Piper at the gates of dawn . Television - Marquee Moon. Bad Company - Bad Co. Moby Grape and CSN
Never mind the bollocks, can't buy a thrill, safe as milk, you could go on.
@@24031965GAV Bollocks. Their first and only album. A statement and a half that blew away the cobwebs.
My top three:
1. King Crimson - In The Court Of The Crimson King
2. Chicago - The Chicago Transit Authority
3. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Wind Cries Mary described as "whimsical"? Huh... I think it's one of Hendrix's most touching, wistful, and melancholy songs.

What about Boston. Wasn't their debut album the highest debut of all time??
Not a fan but when it came out, one could not escape it.
This isn’t a Grammy list...
as a Teen growing up
in Boston at the time
I hated that album ~ sorry
did they have a SECOND album? in our lifetime?
i agree Boston best, then the cars, then bad company, the doors, then foreigner, pearl jam 10, van halen, Lynyrd Skynyrd Poronouced,Led Zeppelin, Hendrix
A couple come to mind, Led Zeppelin 1, and Pearl Jam's Ten
Epitaph is the single-most, beautifully-haunting prog rock song I've ever heard. It's especially relavent today.
Emerson lake and palmers debut is my favourite 2nd is in the court
That "Marquee Moon" didn't make your list is a wonder. It is a debut album so utterly astonishing that it near completely overshadowed the remainder of Television's career.
Arcade Fire their first album Funeral is stunning and they never bettered it
Don’t know where it would land, but Boston’s debut album is a definite for me.
Great choices & video ( as always). I would include the 1st album from The Pretenders, Santana ,& 'How Will The Wolf Survive' by Los Lobos.
My favorite Band
Also BOC
But agree with your other choices as well Rock on Buddy
A well chosen list and argued with articulate flair...but somewhat surprised to not see the Pistols' Never Mind the Bollocks. Still, a superb short list!
A great list and I agree with them all!!
I noticed that John Cale was mentioned on at least 3 different albums.
The Modern Lovers debut one of the very best albums of all time
Have to agree. "I'm Straight" has always been one of my favourite songs; it still makes me laugh every time I hear it.
Smith and her band did not get in with Cale in the slightest. They rejected every suggestion he made. Eventually, Cale asked Smith why she hired him as producer. Smith said it was because Cale's records always sounded so clear. "You fool" said Cale "you should have hired my engineer in that case!"
Oh, and Cale also did the Happy Mondays' debut....
"Pastoral psychedelia". I like that. Always a pleasure to listen to you talk about music.
Piper At The Gates, Zepp 1, and Music From Big Pink, oh & Fresh Cream ! ✌🏻🎸
"Ten", "The Doors" & "Appetite for Destruction" are 3 of my favorite debut albums.
Great picks. I would also consider...
Van Halen--Van Halen
The Cars--The Cars
Pearl Jam--Ten
The Smiths--The Smiths
Boston--Boston
Black Sabbath--Black Sabbath
Led Zeppelin--Led Zeppelin I
The Cars???
A fantastic list! Every album is a classic ! 😊
Great list, Barry. Some classics on your list. Unknown Pleasures is wonderful and of course The Doors debut. Great stuff.
Never Mind the Bollocks, My Aim is True, and Piper at the Gates of Dawn
.
You’re a Smiths fan, I was surprised to see their debut left off this list
🇨🇦 Greetings from Canada! 🇨🇦
Sitting on my couch, sippin’ a beer, surfin’ UA-cam...and your awesome channel appears!
Love Are You Experienced? My favorite song interesting enough is Love or Confusion!
The Boomtown Rats eponymous lp from 1977 and Liverpool band Clinic's Internal Wrangler (2000) are two of my favourites. Love XTC but their first two albums are pretty mixed. Great channel btw.
Hi Barry,
What an incredible list.
God bless and keep well,
Tino
The Stone Roses debut album is awesome. The Cranberries is great too. I guess there are too many to choose from.
Great review 😂❤ I have 8 of the 10 and I will soon buy the other two .
I was old enough to attend the Hyde Park gig although I was luckier still to attend a free arts festival at Goldsmith's College, South London a couple of days before. King Crimson played on the back lawn of the college with an accompanying light show and strobes. Amazing times.
Sounds amazing, I've seen King Crimson several time over the generations and never seen them use a light show, so this must have been special.
Mine is the first Foo Fighters album.
I have did an episode of 'beneath the covers' on that album for my patreon
Appetite for Destruction?
Layla and other Love Songs?
Tea For The Tillerman?
McCartney?
Plastic Ono Band?
All Things Must Pass?
The Madcap Laughs?
In a list of ten you cannot get everything in
@@classicalbum - Absolutely!! 😂 The question marks were just as if to say, "food for thought", not, "why not these"....(btw, if people would not want to consider some of these "debuts", I could hear that assertion.)
Happy New Year!
I would put The Cars debut album in that top 10.
its not bad :)
...but it’s not *good*
@@charliemoody7168 no, it’s VERY good. 😀
Just to stay consistent (though I think his first three albums are fantastic) you should have put John Cale's "Vintage Violence" on here.
I owned that Crimson album, Epitaph one of my favourite tracks ever (that gloriously dark Mellotron), but was unaware it was a debut...hmm.
Good call!
I must say though that "Trout mask replica" was not Captain Beefhart's debut album, that goes to "Safe as milk" which also would be in my top-20 list of "best debut albums"
@@aekangelo You're right. I realized after posting this reply that I was mistaken. Glad you caught it.
I've really enjoyed your vids, only just found you. Thanks.
Grammar not a strong suit
of yours, I see.
If not in the top ten, then certainly in the top 15; Led Zeppelin 's first, The Car's first, Van Halen's first, and of course, Chicago Transit Authority. Overlooking these is a minor tragedy.
I forgot Heart's first album...
Isn't Chicargo in there? Maybe it's in my greatest double albums
I was shocked at the absence of The Return Of Bruno by Bruce Willis.
No, fantastic selection from an articulate man who obviously knows his stuff.
1. Mountain - Climbing
2. Led Zeppelin I
3. Pretenders
4. Pink Floyd - Piper at the gates of dawn
5. Queen I
6. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
7.. Sir Lord Baltimore - Kingdom Come
8. Black Sabbath
9. Iggy Pop - The Idiot
10. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Pronounced ...
I doubt that anyone else would ever name these two albums, but I really liked the debut albums of Ambrosia and Crack The Sky.
1. Court of the Crimson King
2. Are You Experienced
4. Emerson Lake & Palmer
3. The Doors
5. Led Zeppelin 1
6. Mike Oldfield
7. Santana
8. Steely Dan
9. Floyd
10. Pistols
The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses. High Land, Hard Rain - Aztec Camera. Two classics of a slightly different ilk.
No. 1 best ever debut of all time "Court" definitely agreed with, heard it for the first time in 1971. 👏👏
Thank you!
There will never be a better first and last album than The Doors and LA Woman
Roxy Music! Fantastic first album. One of the most influential bands of all time.
Everyone has their own taste in Genres
I respectfully agree with your choices
👍👍
These days, the technology is just not the same anymore
And going to see a band is hit&miss in the 50’60’& 70’ was a different experience LIVE WHAT YOU SAW IS WHAT YOU HEARD
I personally have Transit Authority in my top 10
You Sir most definitely know your music and bands
TY
Great list. I would've put 'Are You Experienced' as #1 or #2. I know it's a tough call and subjective. However, Jimi changed the course of rock guitar for another 55+ years. Thanks for your insightful work!
Piper at the Gates of Dawn, number One.
Glad Jimi Hendrix & Patti Smith are on this list, though many albums here I've not heard before. My top ten 1st studio albums are:
Jimi Hendrix: Are You Experienced
Big Country: The Crossing
Talking Heads: '77
Marillion: Script For A Jester's Tear
Melissa Etheridge: Melissa Etheridge
Heart: Dreamboat Annie
Yardbirds: For Your Love
Goldfrapp: Felt Mountain
Big Brother & The Holding Company: Big Brother & The Holding Company
Jeff Beck (Group): Truth
Could do with some more albums that were actually made in the last 40 years....
Great list , I am very interested in listening to a few of these to expand my taste in other categories of music, thank you for videos I enjoy your outlook on music as a whole
Just to throw a curve ball into the mix as it has nothing to do with rock, but "Homework" by Daft Punk is one of all time great debut albums IMHO.
Black Sabbath, Boston, Chicago Transit Authority, Doors
You could argue in terms of prog history The thoughts of Emerlist Davjack by The Nice should certainly be there
No arguments with the choices so thoughtfully presented in this vid, or those in the comments section. As worthy as they all are, for me the most surprising and mind bending first listen to a debut album was a midnight listen to the newly released Violent Femmes debut. Stunning at the time. I’ll never forget that experience.
For me, Van Halen 1, GnR Appetite for Destruction are absolutely on the list, with strong consideration for Led Zep 1 and Boston
To me Angel Witch- Angel Witch is a greatly underrated but amazing album. A shame they didn't hit at the time! Thx for great content as usual!
Saw them play the Birmingham Odeon with April Wine and somebody I can't recall.According to research Sledgehammer. No wonder I forgot. I'm sure they are stand up rockers
Bruce McCullogh: "I didn't have you figured for a Doors fan." - Kids in the Hall
I have a question, sir. Do you focus on what's generally considered "classic rock" in your personal music listening, hence the channel, or did you make a conscious choice to focus your channel on classic rock? Hope that made sense.
I suppose what is generally considered classic rock that reflects my own taste - although I will start to broaden my horizons in the next year or two.
Some really great first albums, probably my favorite is Boston
I'd also mention:
Crosby Stills and Nash
Dreamboat Annie - Heart
Led Zeppelin
Black Sabbath
Very 'eavy, Very 'umble - Uriah Heep
Can't Buy A Thrill - Steely Dan
Piper At The Gates Of Dawn - Pink Floyd
Electric Music For The Mind And Body - Country Joe and The Fish
Other Way Out - Sun Dial
Incense And Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock
Twice Removed From Yesterday - Robin Trower
Holy Diver - Dio
Blizzard Of Oz - Ozzy
Brilliantly done - some picks in there of which I’m not familiar with or don’t know so will be checking those out. On the whole, cannot disagree with these mentions.
Joy Division was a superb choice. Probably the best and definitely my fave of the albums listed
My top 5 debuts, slightly more indie sounding perhaps, goes like this:
1 The Stone Roses
2 Joy Division
3 Oasis
4 Black Sabbath
5 Led Zeppelin
Great list! Here’s mine:
- Nina Hagen Band - Nina Hagen Band
- Roxy Music - Roxy Music
- Heart - Dreamboat Annie
- Dire Straits - Dire Straits
- Kate Bush - The Kick Inside
- Blondie - Blondie
- UK - UK
- Gentle Giant - Gentle Giant
- Stranglers - Rattus Norvegicus
- Pretenders - Pretenders
- Steely Dan - Can’t Buy A Thrill
Ok, that’s 11 albums. What can you do…
Court of the Crimson King has always been my favorite debut (followed closely by One Live Badger)
Cars, Roxy Music and Pretenders....all great debuts.
Arctic Monkeys - WYSIATWIN
Not read through the comments, so apologies in advance for any duplication..
ELP (self titled)
CAMEL (self titled)
Chris Squire (Fish out of Water)
Steve Hackett (Voyage of the Acolyte)
Bo Hansson (Lord of the Rings)
Mike Oldfield (Tubular Bells)
Plus a much lesser known band
.. Autumn (Oceanworld) sadly their only offering, but damn good...
A mention for a couple of not so proggy, not so rocky debuts..
Christopher Cross (self titled)
Suzanne Vega (self titled)
Another great post Barry 👍
Hi very interesting thanks, I would consider the thoughts of emerlist davjak by the Nice and Elp's first, Btw the nice toured towards the end of 1967 with Hendrix. Pink Floyd Amen corner and the Move ffs. That must have been a hell of a night! Cheers
I won’t try to say what should get bumped, but Zeppelin’s debut was stunning
Several individual tracks often around 6 minutes long, had more raw emotional power than most other other bands could even imagine
I am wearing the same t-shirt today
The Velvet Underground & Nico by The Velver Underground, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd, Unknown Pleasures by Joy Division, In the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson, Black Sabbath by Black Sabbath.
Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath in my opinion "the one album to rule them all".
LMAO. That's actually their worst sounding AND worst album, by a long shot.
