- I didn't like making this video, but I figured you all would want to know what is going on. Unfortunately, my ZF-8 Transmission has some internal damage, and I will likely need to replace my transmission. Check out the video to see what was going on, as well as why it happened. Don't make the same mistakes I did and you shouldn't have any issues with your transmission.

My favorite topic is your honesty. No a lot of people come forward telling their subs that it was their own to blame. Yes when it rains it pours but what is left after the storm is nothing but greatness 🙏🏽
Appreciate it man 🙌🏻
@@AudiC7Owners you l😊
Audi had a TSB for 1-2 gear hesitation. The solution was to update TCM sw.
Meanwhile, try resetting transmission adaptation and letting it readapt. If it can’t adapt or fault codes persist then it’s definitely internal mechanical issues.
If I plan on getting a TCU tune, do I need to get the TSB update or will that overwrite it? I do have a slight jerk when shifting from 1-2
The 1-2 jerk is normal in these cars. A tcu tune will help (and negate the oem software update). What will help even more is getting a jxb performance driveshaft carrier upgrade.
@@AudiC7Owners thank you so much for the reply bro. Just got a 2012 A6 and was kinda worried about this. Compared to the BMWs I've driven before with the zf8, the A6 shifting is too jerky and mellow. I guess a tune and driveshaft carrier is up next
@@AudiC7Owners by the way, on the b8.5 SQ5 and newer S line Audis with the ZF 8hp there is a "DSG fart" while shifting in higher RPMs. Even tested a few BMWs with the same transmission that make the same noise on shift. Do you know if the TCU tune would do the same thing for the C7 A6? I was kinda disappointed that the pre facelift C7 A6 didn't make that noise on shift. I'm looking at the 034 TCU tune bundled with the stage 2+
It does at times
Extremely pleased I found your channel, I plan on getting my hands on either an A6 or A7 (C7 obviously) in a couple months. I feel a lot more confident with all that content I can look through to take care of it. I’ll definitely support this channel at some point.
Thanks man! Good luck getting your C7
One thin you might consider in the future is when you want to do some spirited driving in sport , shift back to dynamic by just pulling back on the shifter when slowing down so the clutch packs don’t drag on downshifts while stopping or slowing down , I do this with my dl501 .. GL
Wish you had the funds to change the chains while the tranny and engine is out. Appreciate your love of Audis. Most people just don’t get it. ✌️💯👍
Sorry to hear what’s going on man, I’ve been having a lesser similar issue with 1st and 2nd where it’s shifting very clunky. I hope to do the zf fluid service this summer to get the shifts back to normal.
By clunky, do you mean something like it shifting very weird into second gear? Revs almost slightly “bounce” twice in second gear and then it shifts into 3rd? I’ve been having this issue for almost 2 years now in my car…
My 16 when cold only does it once coming out of my neighborhood. It will feel like it shifts from 1st revs a bit then catches in 2nd. Shifts great other than that only 68k. Stock tune
@@ItsmeChristoph same thing happened to me here as long as my car warms up stationary a little bit longer like 1 or 2 more minute it won't happen. 100k stock tune as well
@@damian_jasiuI'm having that exact issue with my car as well, the revs bounce twice in second before shifting to third, and the same thing in third as well. Did you manage to resolve that issue?
@@tehgzizlauw1787 No, never resolved it. I did a fluid & filter change on the trans and the old fluid looked good nothing alarming. Also have the car as well as transmission tuned now and it also didn’t change how it acts. Really annoying and no one knows what it could be. I gave up on trying to fix it I just deal with it now
Tbh I follow you more than FCP euro lol, please keep your head up and continue to bring amazing content! My 2013 3.0t A7 had rod knock, I just got the motor swapped with a engine from a 2014. No more rattles, but it cost me about $7,000 for everything :(
Since our zf8 has a built in TCU into the valve body which is adapted to your car have you researched about what kind of adaptation is needed to get the trans running after the physical install?.. Or are you planning on swapping valve bodies?
I actually swapped my original tcu to the replacement trans. No issues at all
Recently replaced tje Zf8 fluid , car had 119k miles , I believe it was first time of this service. The two filter magnets had a bunch of metals particles, just like dust , no big parts. Does it mean I have a transmission problem? Or just normal for the mileage, ? no issues with transmission, just little hard 1-2 gear shifting.
Nope. That's normal to have some debris. If you're trans is functioning correctly then you are good to go
@AudiC7Owners ok 👍. Thanks man, keep up the great videos!!
Hello I have an A7 134k miles on it. I have heard that changing your transmission fluid can affect how the transmission works . Do you think that might be one of the causes of your problem with your transmission? How many miles did you car had when you first got it ? I Saw you did your transmission fluid about 3 years ago
No. You need to change your trans fluid. It's absolutely necessary
Hey man sorry to hear that, I am from europe and watching your vidoes since a long time. I got an A6 Allroad C7 with a 3.0T but with a 7-Speed Stronic, but the mounting is exactly the same as is the trans tunnel for space. I had to renew my flywheel and therefor dropped the transmission and i can tell you that you DO NOT need to remove the engine but a two post life is needed.
Btw: i know in US you only get the ZF-8 Speed and the stronic only in the S4 .
That's good to know. I really don't want to remove the engine lol
Curious about the liqui moly ATF you switched to. Did you do a multi change to completely change from the ZF fluid to ATF 1800 or just the standard? FCP Euro says they should be able to mix, but there's literally no information out there from people that have made the change.
You can absolutely mix the 1800 with the oem fluid or any other atf that is up to spec for your trans.
@@AudiC7Owners Thx dude and best of luck with your tranny replacement/rebuild!
Well I had the same problem. I got it serviced in October and then apparently the forgot to put the filter. I had a problem when going hard from 2nd to 3rd. Big hit and into limp mode. Changed all the clutch packs and the torque converter. It costed me around 2000$, but I live in eastern Europe.
Thanks for you video sir! Just one more short question, do you know how much it will roughly take to replace engine mounts for A7(C7)? My car is shaking like crazy during idle.
Lots of for both mounts at an indy shop should be around 350$
@@AudiC7Owners Got it! Thanks for replying!
Are the magnets in there from factory or have you added them in?
They are built into the filter
Helpful tips - my 2018 SQ5 has a ZF8 transmission so I was very interested in how you drive yours. I'm at 85k miles and I've only used the manual function maybe 5 times. But I also drive pretty gently. As part of Audicare my transmission fluid was swapped at 80k, but I think it's only an ATF fluid drain and maybe the ATF filter check vs. full replacement. I have the ATF replacement filter as well as undertray and plan on doing a full transmission fluid swap at 95k myself. Have you already done a separate swap of the "lifetime" fluids of the rear differential? My 2018 SQ5 has the sport LSD option so I had to look up how to do a fluid swap on it (it takes both ATF/driver's side and manual fluid/passenger side of the rear differential. If you have this then you may want to perform a fluid swap on it as well.
I haven't done the diffs yet but I plan on it
I think you said north cal rep... Are you in norcal? Can you tell me the shop that you used to do the work?
North Carolina lol
My ZF TCU just decided to go dead on me last month. No early sign whatsoever, one morning when i try to start my car there's simply no communication with the TCU. Check all wirings and seems ok. Had to change the TCU. Any idea why is this happening? Can wrong use of fluid that resulted to high temp of gearbox caused this?
Did you scan for codes? If you're trans coolant valve went bad the coolant can go up the harness & into the tcu killing it
what could be the problem . sometimes when i come to a hard stop, if feels like a got hit from behind, like a love tap, but otherwise the trans shifts fine?
I’ve thought this should be a meme for zf owners: Thought I got rear ended but then I remembered I have a ZF transmission
That’s unfortunate man, do you have a tcu tune?
Yes I do, but it didn't contribute to this failure
I bought a 14 c7 tdi at 140k miles im the second owner, first owner a woman never did any transmission fluid change , and all the services done at the dealership, i see no problem with transmission so far also got Unitronic stage 1.
What would you suggest at this point for the transmission fluid?
I'd suggest changing it & the filter
Happened to my 2015 q5 tdi at 120k, you really have to watch the downshifts with the 3.0 diesels, creates a lot of torque very quickly.
Where are you relocating the PCV to? Also, just a thought, you could put your complete build list on your about page for people to look through and have links to related videos in the description.
Check out our video on it 👍🏻
@@AudiC7Owners lol,....I will
It's too much to type lol
@@AudiC7Owners fair fair. I have a moded 2012 A7, and I really enjoy your content.
My issue is slipping in second and third gear if I accelerate it sharply since approx 50.000 miles. (Bitdi zf8). Oil change didn’t do any change in behavior, so most likely will do a transmission replacement soon if I find a good deal.
Good luck!
@@AudiC7Owners thank you 🙏
I finally got to the real problem and fixed it. Transmission was perfect. Problem was, I had a turbo hose leak and when I was accelerating the car sharply, the transmission slipped every time. Now everything is perfect!
Cheap fix too! Nice
@@AudiC7Owners Yep, the car has more power too, love it!❤
Hey man, what problem can my transmission have? First of all after I tuned my tcu when I launch from first and it goes to shift 2nd gear the gears go blank on the dash. Then I turn car off and on and it’s as nothing happened. Only happens once in a while when I launch. Could it be time for a fluid change or goes into safe? It shifts smooth still and doesn’t give me any other problems. Only code I get it accelerating to high which is due to the tcu tune revving higher. Thanks for your help man! Btw I have 112k miles. According to service records fluid never been changed. It’s a 2012 Audi a6 c7 3.0t
First thing I'd do is scan the car for codes to see what it says. If you are at 112k miles & never had the fluid changed then you should Def do that service.
I got the DSG on my 2012 Audi A6 C7 can i swap it to ZF-8 as i’m having some issues. Is it direct fitment ? Or need some modifications?
I don't know 100%, but I'd imagine it would be very difficult to swap to zf.
I'm replacing my transmission right now. I would get this weird "grinding/whining" noise when accelerating, my torque converter was lazy to lock up, and on cold starts for the first 2 mins my TC wouldn't lock up at all. I would be accelerating and when letting off the gas revs would drop back to idle. Also launch control would short shift into second because TC would be lazy to lock up and then once at top of revs (7,400 RPM) it wouldn't shift into 3rd until I let off the gas.
I will say removing the transmission and reinstalling wasn't too big of a hassle, besides getting things out of the way. Very doable without loosening subframe or removing the engine, though there is prep work like removing steering column. Transmission should be ready to go installed tomorrow.
Sucks to have the issues. I was expecting a higher price for a replacement trans though so could be worse I guess. The only interesting things my trans does is when the car is cold the 1-2 shift driving normally feels like the line pressure is turned up. Also every once in a while if I put it in drive and just barely touch the gas, the 1-2 will occasionally slam 2nd. I've had the car for a year now and it's only done that a couple of times so not sure why. Smooth sailing for the most part.
Just keep up with fluid changes
We have the same year, miles and mostly the same mods. This is adding more gray hairs to my head. I did decent PMs and don't drive as hard as it sounds you so there's that. Hope that's enough to keep me from going through this.
The issues I'm having are very rare with the ZF
what ive been hearing is mixing the Liqui moly with the ZF fluid is risky?
That is false.
That's like saying mixing different synthetic engine oils (that meet the same specs) is risky.
Bone stock my A6 clunked hard from 1-2 first shift of the day every time. Became less after I did all the drivetrain inserts. About gone after Integrated Engineering ZF TCU tune. I contacted IE and they didn’t recommend and additional PM outside of the stock interval.
The 1-2 clunk is notorioys in the zf-8
@@AudiC7Owners I thought I was crazy at first. ive been in a few ZF mopars and they all felt smooth. a few years newer than mine
Did you check all the solenoids while in there?
Yep. The original mech unit looked great. No indication of solenoid failure
Sorry about this news, dude! Getting me a bit worried with my SQ5. 1st to 2nd has been clunky lately. Might be time to buy the ZF fluid kit from FCP Euro. Only 10k miles since I changed it last
Do you know if my problem might be ZF related or something else? I've heard some 3.0T folks have clunkiness that was solved with a trans mount?
A little bit of clunkiness is normal between first and second gear. Drivetrain inserts definitely help it.
If you don’t mind me asking how much miles you have??
Almost 130k
If you don't mind me asking how many miles do you have on car?
127k as of this week
@@AudiC7Owners I'm coming up on that mark. Maybe, I should get ahead of the game.
@Audi c7 Owners International - I have a 2016 and I have a situation that happens intermittently where only on the 1st start up for the day the car will not shift out of 1st until almost 3-3.5k rpm and then it will violently shift to 2nd. Anyone have any ideas if a fluid change would help, thoughts?
To be honest it doesn't sound like a fluid issue. That sounds like a valve body issue.
How can you tell if you have a ZF or DSG Trans. I have a 2015 a6 c7
You have a ZF. Only S cars got the dsg in the US
@@AudiC7Owners thank you for the quick response 👍
Didn’t it end up being your TCU tune?
No
Hello guys, im reaching out for help right now.
Mechanics i've talked to told me that car drives normal and all, but here's the thing... There are few indication that something is wrong and i really dont know what is.
When i start to drive my car away from my garage and the car is completely cold it feels jumpy, sometimes even trying to 'catch' the second gear but after a few miles its okay.
Sometimes also happens that when i drive and stop and let it be in D, cars starts to lose rpms (jumping from 950 to 800rpm few times then stops)
After some abuse it also starts to shift very hard and i am worried a bit.
The car we are talking is Audi A7 3.0tdi quattro 2016 8speed 320hp mapped to 400 i think, I have 250kkm on a clock
I really hope that there is no big issue, as i just got the car
I'd start with a transmission fluid/filter change to see if that helps
I used to have a c7 about a year ago and it had insane trannny slips at around 2200 rpm in 1st andmaybe 2nd also it would jerk insane it was really bad it did it for about 2 years until I got rid of the car nothing happened to it
Can there be such a thing as an oil catch can for the transmission?
And do you think changing the transmission fluid much earlier would have significantly reduced this issue? And wow, sorry this happened to you. I feel your depression. :(
I haven't heard of a transmission catch can... Doubt that is a thing.
And no. This was from driving habits.
In wonder if such a thing could be helpful?
Yeah "fluid is for life" meaning (life of the transmission). MEANING: 100K miles or so, then dies and you have to pay big money for a rebuild or worse buy a new transmission. Always, i repeat, always change the transmission fluid EVEN if you drive your car slowly etc every 50-60K miles change it, quality fluid and you're good to go for a long long time! Changed the fluid in my ZF bmw 4 series now, castrol transmax and, car's almost 150K miles and changes gears like new. Don't listen to the brand or stealerships...
Facts
I would invest in better bolts. The torx hole is bigger than the bolt so there isnt much support.
If you are referring to the pan bolts, the oem ones are just fine. Just don't over torque them.
@@AudiC7Owners yea the ones you got in the bag. I would use a 6pt bolt over those torx.
I did the same thing man to my q5 diesel with the zf 8.
That sucks your transmission is not acting right, you will get it straightened out soon.
I hope so!
Idk how you pulled it off but you look just like Adam Sandler in the thumbnail
Lol
Hi guys, I need advice. I have A6 C7 2012 3.0 Tdi s tronic.
Im having a problem with driving of from standstill position, if I accelerate gently everything is fine but if Im standing at a round about and I need to get in faster, I press the accelerator a little bit harder and the car seems to shake, does anyone know what could be the problem?
You should scan the car. Sounds like a possible glow plug issue
I did and and it did show one plug to be faulty so I changed it.
Went to a gearbox company and they said there's nothing wrong with the gearbox too.
I personally think it's the gearbox, but I hope Im wrong.
Just another thing, my manifold gasket was leaking, so I changed that at home and now my dpf is blocked, I took the dpf out and I've sent it off to a company to clean it out, once it's back il put it back in and see how she runs.
Do you think it could be a dirty throttle body? Or Iam I just overthinking it now at this stage.
Thanks for replying.
I think you are maybe jumping the gun a bit on the TB. Get the dof back & see say happens. Assess things 1 part at a time.
@@AudiC7Owners okay, thanks again.
Will let you know how Im getting on once it's back in the car.
Try Integrated engineering ZF8 TCU
I have a tcu tune that I'm very happy with already
Love your car and it will love you. Beat your car and it will beat the crap out of your wallet.
I may have beat on it, but I take care of my car. Nothing is impervious. I've seen plenty of stock cars have far more failures than mine even with the way I drive.
Stock cars, or Audi A6 C7 stock cars? ;)
