Yes, thanks for this. I do art because I love to. I am 80 and my art is like no other. I do it for myself and for my family. The only expectation I have is to continue it and get better and enjoy it. I love watching you and learning from you. Thanks for speaking to this. I hope you’re having a nice vacation.

Good morning Sat Chatters! Lindsay, you hit the nail on the head this morning. At age 78, I wonder every day just how many days, weeks or years I have left. No, it's not depressing, it's just a life fact. And I strive to accomplish as much as possible. Some days it art, some days its just getting bills paid and my laundry done. But I can still get a whole bunch of satisfaction out of every day. Golden years have been made not- so- golden by many things we have no control over, so we just have to go for the moments we can control and grab life. ( My tirade is now over!)❤❤

When I retired as a 40 year biology teacher I was asked, as I got my “amazing” retirement certificate what I wanted to do with my retirement….I said learn to watercolor as one of my goals. The guy actually laughed in my face and said “ good luck with that”. What a burn. But you have inspired me through UA-cam and now class after class with such great feedback, suggestions and kudos. We are never too old to learn anything. At a library used book sale yesterday I bought a great book of flowers for every month…some wonderful pen and ink sketches as well as photos. I almost bought an algebra book, because I was never good at it, and then put it back and said to myself “I’d rather paint everyday”. Don’t know what tomorrow brings but for me it’s watercolors and brushes…I even dream about it at night. 😊. Hope your vacation was relaxing. So glad you and your family are safe. ❤️

Sorry for the burn, cuz that guy doesn't know diddly squat! A few weeks ago I discovered an artist who was a teacher during covid. She decided to take a 30 day watercolor challenge. She had never done art before, but it was covid and teaching was so different! Well, 3 years on she is amazing. If you paint everyday you can't help but get better. When you have your art exhibit I hope you invite the guy and smile sweetly at him (but in your mind you're saying, HA! I did it!) All the support in the world. ❤

You are too kind but posting on Lindsay’s classes is about as far as I’ll get toward an art exhibit. I still say “Ha!” to that guy in my mind all the time. I do believe Lindsay’s mantra about do some art everyday is a good rule to go by. I do see baby step improvements everyday.

Honestly, your channel has gotten me through some of the hardest times of my life, through two very emotionally difficult pregnancies, my husband walking out on us, and all of the chaos of the last 18 months. You're also the Artist who taught me how to paint and helped me get through feeling like if it wasn't instantly perfect then art wasn't for me. I can't thank you enough for what you do.

I have this thought all the time. I will never be that good because I don’t have enough time left. Then I think…but do I need to be that good??? Can I be satisfied with just enjoying the process and seeing improvement in my effort? What’s my goal? I have no expectation of hanging in a gallery, but would I be pleased to paint a pretty watercolor card to send to a friend? Or would I be happy to have a journal to flip through at some point and see growth? I think that’s enough for me 😊

I haven't watched all the way through, but yes. I have thought that it's too late. And am often on a roller coaster of, "it's too late, I will never be that good." And, "but I don't want to wake up an hour to two hours earlier to practice." (Which is what another artist said to do) and, "hey, this one turned out pretty good. Maybe I'm not terrible after all.".
My life is pretty much a self inflicted roller coaster!

My partner Keith was talking this week about how it may be 'too late' for him to follow another vocation. He runs the scroll saw and woodworking part of our business now, as I have moved from that to the color and painting part of the business. With all the laser cutting, scroll sawing is really weaning. Even though we offer SVG patterns for lasers as well, the market is really flooded and he worries. He is younger than I am and is worrying that it is too late to begin something new. I admit (as does he) that he doesn't have the pure passion for art that I do. He is what I call the 'bean counter' and is definitely in the business to support us, not for love of creating. It is a 'job' for him, for sure.
Many have fallen down the rabbit hole of 'shorts' and I do think it gives a false impression as to what it takes to create art. When you see a painting start-to-finish come to life in 45 seconds, you lose the reality that took hours and hours to create - not to mention the years of learning. What happened to enjoying the journey?
For myself, I am in my happy place while ON the journey. I love learning - whether it be from failing or succeeding. Even my fails are functional because I learn from them. I find myself most calm when I am in the process of creating. I must admit, I enjoy the feedback, too. Good or bad, it is important to me. Thank you for this video. I hope you had a good vacation. :) See you next week.

I think one of the things I love best about this channel is that we get to see how things are done, and we get to see some of the mistakes and how to overcome them. I don't watch a lot of art channels, or watch shorts, because I just get discouraged seeing beautiful finished products all the time. Being able to see the process is so important to me!
(I also firmly believe that this trend of short videos is contributing to shortening attention spans, but that's another tangent. lol)

I’m 73 and started on watercolor about 5 years ago. Then I got the courage to display my art at an amateur art show and people actually bought some of my things. An elderly lady bought a painting of a clematis and the smile on her face was priceless. I was also asked to display at a Veterinary Hospital that displays local art for its clients to view. What a thrill that will be as I will be featured September and October of 2024. Never count yourself out. Life has many twist and turns; take advantage of all of them.

This sat chat is very true, and much appreciated. When I was in high school I wanted to be able to put my visions into art, but the art teacher threw me out of class and told me to stick to marching band. So I never picked up anything art related. Now I am 56 and I am trying so hard to teach myself all the things that I should know. It’s coming as a chore now, I just want to paint, however every video I watch I have to do this technique or that technique and shadows and light have to be in certain places. All I want to do is paint what is in my heart.

For some reason, this reminds me of my 5th/6th grade band experience. I couldn't read sheet music at all (still can't), and I'm ashamed to say I never practiced at home because no one ever pushed me...and I was a kid, all I wanted to do was play outside with my friends! Instead of pushing me or encouraging me, I distinctly remember my "teacher" telling me to just fake it during band concerts. In 5th grade, I was the only oboe player, so it was easy to just pretend! When an experienced oboe player joined me the following year, however, I knew it was time to quit. >

I am experiencing pure joy now that I am retired from using my time to experiment and learn to use various mediums. Majority of my learning and improvement has been from taking your courses and your UA-cam videos. Definitely not a negative trait that you want to show your artwork to get positive feedback. Renoir consoles me. He painted every day whilst crippled, up until the day before he passed at 78, even though he had to be carried to his easel and the brush strapped to his hand. He felt this practice was necessary and during this last session told his son " I think that I'm beginning to get the hang of this".
No excuses for me then and a renewed resolution to keep on going. It's never too late to follow your passion and keep practicing.

When I retired at age 62, my friend ( who was in the Sangamon Watercolor Society) said “ why don’t you come paint with us and learn watercolor” I did and loved it! It took me awhile to master watercolor but now at age 70 …..my friends can’t believe how good I have become. I have won several honorable mentions in art shows and even sold a few watercolors! This is my favorite Sat Chat. I started as an art major in college way back in 1979, but switched majors. I did flat work for a while, but stopped after starting a family. In 1994, through a hobby I began sculpting and painting until I developed severe arthritis in both thumb joints. Eventually I had both fused, which allowed me to start using my hands without pain. About three years ago, at the age of 57, I decided to do flat work again. I started with graphite, taught myself colored pencils via tutorials, took the "scary" plunge of watercolors, alcohol markers and gouache, all thanks to the wonderful reviews and tutorials of you Lindsay. I purchased the alcohol markers course, which after watching just two videos it clicked for me. I know this is an extraordinarily long comment. My motto has been since I reactivated myself into art, " Its never too late."

I don't like to watch shorts and when I have they easily distract me to waste time on my phone. I prefer to be taught in long sessions, meaning 30 to 60 minutes. The art I create I only share with my family and on two Facebook groups where I feel safe and not judged and encouraged. I have 2 art penpals and we send each other little bits and a note each month. You are fire in this video! Your observations and advice feel so spot on to me! Your points about UA-cam cross over into corporate America as well! I work as a lead pharmacy tech in CVS for over 20 years. They turned wonderful, important, and dedicated employee's that loved their career choice into critically overworked, underpaid, zombies that were made to feel daily how replaceable they were. When I left in 2018 it was literally a dangerous situation. Most importantly for the patient, who was now treated like a customer, as there was no time for them or their needs. It was also a toxic environment for the caring employees who were leaving in droves. Talk about a rant😂 Thank you for always being observant, intuitive, and honest. Have an amazing vacation ❤

You echoed my sentiments. That’s about the time I started as well. It’s been a life saver through some very trying times. Not only is it an escape, but it’s a way to lose myself in beauty. Even the not so great watercolors have beauty.

Thank you so much for this video. I am 70 years old and I love doing my art. I love drawing and painting, ink and wash, trying different mediums and now I am making sketchbooks. I love it all. Thank you so much for qualifying that. And thank you so much for not jumping on the "shorts" wagon. I hate them.

i was recently in Ketchikan, Alaska (Holland America cruise, highly recommend!) and there was a stall selling watercolor prints and originals by two elderly sisters who began learning watercolor when they retired. The work was fabulous and we all bought prints in varying sizes! They were probably in their late seventies and living their best life!

Very well said Lindsay. I'd much rather watch the longer videos than the shorts. Some are good I must say. But I watch the longer videos because I want to hear what you and other you-tubers I watch have to say and what you all have to teach me. In turn I am enriched by it. Keep the them coming, I for one am here to watch!! Thank you. 🎨

Again, thank you so much, Lindsay, I was fortunate enough to know potters and artists from a really young age. Whilst they appear to have the dream job working from home being with the pets all day. I know that the reality of never knowing when the money is coming in or if. They live on very little, and most have a strong support system from family.
Yes, I longed for the lifestyle, but I cling to my weekly wages. UA-cam has been annoying me too, .... anyway, you said it, gurl!
Hopefully, when I retire, I can paint.

How interesting to hear your genuine heartfelt rant about UA-cam, Lindsay. For advertising reasons social media is trying to move our attention spans to that of Dory. Won't be held 'hostage' to people's tacky vanity so I only watch long form videos, not reels and never tik tok.
I want to learn real information from genuine people and so appreciate content creators as yourself who respect and value the genuine engagement of their audience. TFS!!

Thank you for the pep-talk, Lindsay! I am a graphic designer but had a bad experience so now I question all my abilities. Not good when trying to find a new job. Your Sat Chat helped me organize some thoughts and I really appreciate it. BTW, there is nothing wrong with getting/needing/wanting external recognition for your art or accomplishments. I do believe you are confident, work hard and own your successes as well as your less successful attempts, and it's okay to want that outside validation, but you really don't NEED it to continue. You have a wonderful inner soul and confidence. Go forth and live your awesome dreams!!!

Wow spot on. I think that ALL the time!!!! Also, think about my job, my work schedule also, think about my job, my work schedule my shift is quite unique to my position I work night shift and I work seven nights in a row 12 hour shifts from 7 PM to 7 AM and then the hour drive home. And then on my week off I think I’m gonna have tons of time to paint or draw all of those. I’m still in the learning process or my first love in my actual first career photography and then my week off turns into catch up for all the things I couldn’t do on my work week and appointments. I also help out my 84-year-old mom thought creeping into my head routinely said the next thought is why try why bother sometimes I think we are our own worst enemies

Oh gosh Lindsay, you so hut the nail on the head!
I’m one of those ‘child art prodigies,’ art technique just came naturally to me as a child, I went on and achieved a design degree but the thing that always alluded me was finding my style and what I wanted to say with my art and never feeling good enough. I became so frustrated with it I pretty much stopped creating for almost 8 years.
It wasn’t until I learned to let all that technique and competition go with art that I was able to start drawing and painting again just for fun.
Now I work with vulnerable young people and use art therapy to help give them coping techniques to support their mental health and resilience. I will always encourage everyone to take up some form of art. It’s so beneficial to your health to nurture your creativity. 😊

I was thinking this the other day should I keep doing art. I have been doing this since 2012. I am not very good. I have had no formal training. I watch you a lot and have learned so much.. I draw and paint what I see. I do this for myself. I probably don't practice enough. I also like doing other little hobbies. I am 76 and want to keep doing what I can. Lindsay you have really kept me going with your enthusiasm and beautiful art work. I love your videos and Sat Chats.😍

I watch to learn how to color, how to pick my colors to the page I will be coloring. And I always question myself will I ever be able to color like that? So with you talking to us, I’ll watch but I’ll do me. Thank you 🙏🏽 so much Lindsay for speaking from the heart. We appreciate you. 💞💞👍👍🙏🏽🙏🏽😊😊👏🏽👏🏽

Hi Lindsay! I had good courses in high school for Art. I wanted to go to Art school but was afraid of starving lol! I went to school for Interior Design. I did great but wasn't able to finish. I have been drawing and painting on and off for 46 yesrs since high school. I will be 65 Years old in November. I found UA-cam in 2021. I picked up where I left off in school. I finally learned to draw loose enough to be able to draw people. That was with the help of UA-cam. I will still keep going. Everything is basically for my pleasure. You inspire me. Thank you for everything.

Thanks for this Lindsay and everyone else who commented on being an artist. I only started tangling and then card making and some drawing and colouring after I retired early due to illness. I didn’t really think of myself as an artist but after what you said I think maybe I am one. Not bad for someone who was actively discouraged by parents and teachers and told I was not artistic as a child. Maybe I could try painting? Although I do love my prismacolours. 😊

Great Sat Chat. (And thinking about Lindsay and her family this week.) Having recently retired, I now feel it is the time to do all that artsy stuff that I never had time for while I was working and raising a family. I'm not looking to be a great artist, but I am looking to have fun drawing, painting, crafting, etc. If I turn out to be better than I thought I would be, that would be nice, but certainly not necessary. Now I'm going to check out the drawing class I purchased from Lindsay a year ago!

I’ll never call myself an artist. After I retired I didn’t have any real direction. A lady I met in yoga told me about the no cost art classes for seniors at our junior college. I’d never taken an art class but have always done crafts, sewing, knitting, crochet, scrap booking so I signed up for watercolor! That class taught me that I needed to learn to draw so I took a couple drawing classes and a pastel class and more watercolor classes. I paint and draw for myself only and that’s enough. I love your creativity and energy and look forward to seeing all of your work. Happy vacation 😊

Thank you for sharing another SatChat with us. We do hope that you are enjoying your vacation and are looking forward to seeing more content as you return. And I only do it for people who appreciate it! haha I do want to learn how to paint landscapes and animals but it does take a lot of practice and I am a little hard on myself so I got into art journaling and collage and find it much easier and rewarding I guess, although I do try the odd painting once in awhile. Thanks Lindsay, hope you had a wonderful vacation! 😀

Lindsay, I’m glad that you do not put “shorts’ videos. The one feature i despise that UA-cam has added is the ‘-the short form of their tutorials or any other videos. It is sooooooooo annoying to see it posted and I wish they would totally remove that and keep the long forms of videos. I love watching all your tutorials that you take so much effort and put it out there. Moreover I value your reviews of the art supplies and have not bought any of them without first watching your review on it. Thank you for all that you do.
