The Fox Body Mustang Pricing Debacle - How much does/should a Fox Body Mustang cost?

  • Ok folks, let's get to the bottom of this before its too late! On this episode I share my opinion on the outrageous prices that people are selling Foxbody Mustangs for. In many cases, I think that the prices are justifiable however, I keep seeing more and more examples of people asking WAY too much for cars that are barley worth saving and/or worth the tow bill to send them to the scrap yard! The Mustang community and the good people that make it up hold a very special place in my heart. I've yet to meet a single person from this community that wouldn't go out of their way to help a fellow enthusiast. For this reason, I felt the need to put this video together to plead with the community to please act in the same fashion when selling your beloved mustang as you do when you see a fellow mustang enthusiast on the road or at a car show. We're all in this together, so lets be fair and realistic with one another 🙏🦊❤️

Hmm. Sounds like a familiar conversation 😎. Definitely a hot topic and somewhat sensitive topic for me. I personally hate the high prices. I want to keep them affordable! I could care less about buying a fox to sell it later for big money. I want to drive and enjoy hell out of mine!! Today’s prices for certain car models it is becoming almost impossible unless you have endless funds. The market has turned cars that should be driven and enjoyed into garage queens! I talk to so many guys who truly love them and dreamed of owning one that can’t afford the car they could have bought as few as 3 years ago, and now that boat or dream has sailed. I personally really struggle with the high prices knowing what we paid for our cars as few as 3-5 years ago. As you mentioned the amount of money that will need invested into a car that is decent to make it really nice is hard for me to swallow. Ok I’ll get off my soap box now. Lol. Looking forward to your live steam. Cheers bud!

@@KASLCustoms thanks buddy. It’s a challenging subject and my perspective has changed some from when I got back into the Fox game in 2014. I love the idea of steady appreciation where you can buy, modify, and enjoy the cars without taking a loss. But now values have doubled and tripled and that changes a lot for me an how I enjoy my cars now. Which is what lead us into the discussion of buying cars that need restored and the cost. I guess the only good thing is maybe they have appreciated enough that you don’t totally lose your ass on a restoration. But I sure do miss the days a clean cars at $10k and clean low mileage cobras at $20k 🤣. My income sure hasn’t inflated enough to keep up with the price of our hobby😂😂.

The Foxbody community is the only niche where owners are pissed that the Foxbodys are skyrocketing in value. This is a good thing boys, we should love this. Imagine Foxbodys getting to even 5% of what happened to the air cooled Porsche market. That would be amazing! Appreciation is always good, always. I get that foxbodys had decades of dirt cheap fun, but know as more GenX guys like me are coming back to what we grew up in its going to raise the floor. Im all for helping other out, and sharing info and being a community, but lets all let these things go to the moon.

You’re being generous even in this video. Truthfully I’d pay max, for a stock Foxbody with 70k-80k, stock, in decent shape MAYBE 10k. I have three of them myself, one roughly 10k, other two roughly 7k-8k range. All three have inbetween 70k-80k miles, which is the average mileage your going to find on a Fox that’s been driven and not sitting in some garage waiting to be sold. I didn’t buy any of mine to resell later, I bought them all to drive. I love these cars and they are getting rare to find in decent condition, or they’ve been chopped up or modified heavily. Personally I put a lot of blame on LMR/5.0Resto whatever you want to call them anymore. Nobody will ever admit or see that, but they’ve inflated prices on all their parts and they’ve created this community of people who think these cars are worth a ridiculous amount of money when in reality they just aren’t.
Edit: Also, the 2.3l is becoming more rare than the 5.0. It’s not better, but finding them untouched does add value. To each their own though.

    • @KASLCustoms
      @KASLCustoms  2 роки тому +1

Thanks for reaching out and sharing your thoughts! It’s funny that you bring up the inflation point because another viewer was drawing that conclusion as well. They were saying that the cars themselves have been susceptible to inflation - which I somewhat see but also somewhat disagree with. The parts themselves however have definitely been susceptible to inflation which in turn makes the restored/modified cars indirectly susceptible to it by the default of adding parts…

I agree with you but I cant see paying anything near what they want for new vehicles now. I would rather have a fox body than any other car period. I like the GT better than the coupe so I would pay more a hatch than a coupe. Thats just me. Some people like convertibles and some hate them. I think they are cool and would like to have one in addition to my GT. It is a hobby that you really cant make money on. Its more or less the memories that surround the cars than the car its self. I just enjoy piecing my car together a little at a time the way i want it. I almost hope I never get finished because that would end my fun! Im just glad that these cars are still getting noticed and appreciated.

So much truth to this. I inherited my dad's decrepit 89 GT vert that has been in the family since 1993. I had in my mind that I would put about $2500 in it just to make it driveable and presentable again... fast forward 2.5 years and I ended up having $7000 in a car that wound up being much nicer than when he originally bought it. But it still needs a new top... I hate to imagine how much that's going to cost.

great vid and i couldnt agree more tbh. ive owned a few fox's over the years. i just bought a 91 gt 5spd w factory sunroof 2 days ago. i looked high and low for one let me tell you. i got a stellar deal as well. it has 0 rust and i mean 0. 120k miles on it and engine is stock aside from shorty headers. has full exhaust short ,throw shifter, cervini twin turbo hood, cobra rims, 410 or 11 gears forgot which. its black w gray interior but was originally red. paint is good on the car thankfully. guy i got it from owned it 25 years. i checked everywhere for like a month trying to find a decent one. i literally could not find one that both the price and the owner werent high lol. i pretty much gave up looking as well. then out of sheer luck i found this one. it needs a headliner currently which is no big deal. it also has shaved door handles. problem w that is he lost the remote for the doors. trying to figure out if i can buy a remote rather than buy a whole new door popper kit etc. i paid 5700 for it and was happy to do so. the seats only need cleaned but no rips or tears etc. it has the really nice cloth seats in it too w leg supports. i was happy as shit to find a clean car for the price i did. being rust free and not have tons of issues or need a shitload of work was a bonus. i know its 2 yrs later but i hope your buddy just waited. if you got cash the only thing you need next is patience. you'll find the right car and deal it just simply takes time. 4k for that id tell that dude pound salt. the price wasnt the only thing high there for sure. take care

Thank you. Well done. I’ve owned a few 5.0 Mustangs and 1 Capri 5.0. Honestly I really only liked them because they were cheap, lightweight and relatively easy to make fast, if you’re pretty mechanically inclined. These cars are really slow in stock trim. Cool if you want to get embarrassed. If you want to get anywhere close to having a reliable 12-11 second car be prepared to spend time and thousands of dollars. The market is ridiculous right now. A lot of em out there with rusty strut towers sloppy torq boxes and the notorious foxbody lean etc. If you’re not familiar with these cars please get a second opinion if you’re gonna buy. God bless and go 5.0 💨🤙

So funny but true, totally different levels to this. I am always in the market as well as always selling to make room for another but I get people all the time that send me a car and say well I can buy this for 20. I tell them to go buy it. Originality can not be duplicated with these cars. Peoples best bet if they are not mechanically equipped on restoring one themselves is to save and pay what some say is full price today but certainly won’t be full price tomorrow. The major perk to this is you get to enjoy your investment right away while the price will continue to do nothing but rise. These fine examples as you expressed like the Bimini are essentially priceless since there is none left and the ones that are, are mostly traded amongst the collectors and never even advertised at this point. As long as I’ve been driving I’ve owned a fox and I just say it’s finally nice to see these cars being appreciated as they should

You're 100% correct. The value of these cars have gone a little too high too quickly but people really like these cars. You know that people will go crazy when you're driving down the road, I mean I've had a guy almost fall off his bike because he was so excited when he saw my car. I drove around in a 67 Camaro rally sport and didn't get that kind of reaction. That's a fact. But I also think that the guy selling the tired old Fox body for $4,000 is selling it for much too much money. Something that needs that kind of work should not be selling for that high.

There is a large automobile consignment shop right near me. It is stuffed with specialty cars that owners have spent small fortunes on. Now some of the owners are trying to sell their cars to raise cash. The sad fact is most of those cars will never return their original investment. The only people making money are repair shops and aftermarket parts houses and paint/body shops. My theory is that owners are overpaying to build their dream cars. Hence there is no way for owners to recoup their investment. If I'm correct, the only good options for acquiring a cool car is to buy something up to five years old that doesn't need repairs or to buy something brand new. The only exception is an older car that is rare and highly desirable and not needing major repair.

I think it all depends on the buyer…for me I was looking for an unmolested, stock, rust free fox body with a T5 trans. It was amazing to me that it took me over a year of searching to find one that checked just those boxes. I am a purist and like to keep things stock and am willing to pay more for stock than I would for a built fox. I tend to think that I may be in the minority on this as I see so many foxes turned into drag cars, which is fine but not my cup of tea. With what I paid along with all the work I had to do to get her reliable I am right at 20 grand and that’s me doing a lot of the work on my stock (minus exhaust) 87 vert with a little over 100k miles with a clean title. I know it’s not worth 20k but I also never plan on selling it so it’s worth it to me….great conversation and great video as always! Yep well I had bought a 87 conv. 5.0 back for 3k which I think was a great deal stock engine was strong but it was lowered and because of that it had a total damage to the whole exhaust system and that alone ran me 2500 to fix brand new parts the top cover leaked everywhere I was going to get it fix was asking crazy $$$$ tofix it . The fuel tank leaked because it had been lowered in a a cheap way ✂️ the springs the weight of it caused the rubber ring around the fuel intake pipe that goes into the fuel tank to get sliced and chewed up and caused the fuel sensor to get knocked out of wack me and my buddy fix that are selves to save $$$$. But I decided to sell it after just three years of owning it because man it was getting expensive to fix and my money was not good at the time plus i really wanted a hatch back but the crazy prices my brothers and sisters are asking for wow I mean I put another 3k into the car and still had major issues to fix and this was back in late 90s. The body was perfect and the paint perfect that save $$$$. But to the topic if it is not clean and in perfect condition it is going to cost a lot of money to fix so please keep that in mind when we are trying to sale it. Shoot after a 6-7k investment I sold it for 1,800. I looked at it as a learning experience and now I know what to look for when I buy another foxbody.

Good friend of infamous here. Although many, the main reason Foxbody pricing is looked at sideways and is misunderstood is due to uneducated and knowledge of why certain cars climb in the first place wether it’s a Foxbody or not. It all stems from there; uneducated in what makes something valuable and what doesn’t, why two exact model cars can be priced significantly different etc.

An original 4cyl car should bring $4k if it's mint. No matter how great you make it, it will always have a 4cyl VIN code so only a select set of people would be willing to ever shell out real money for it if you wanted to eventually sell it. Coupe or not your friend should hold out for an original v8 car - they're out there.

I have had foxbodys for cheap in the past. My first was a 4 eyed mildly built 5 speed, I got the price down to 1500 usd, I only had 1200usd and no car. My co worker dropped me off in a walmart parking lot where the meet up was gonna happen. The owner showed up and the fox had no brakes!! He was using the e brake to stop lol. He ended up accepting the 1200usd that I had and actually gave me 300dollars back and said to me, go to auto zone and get some brakes. So all in all, 900usd for the car, daily drove it for 2 years. Had cruise control and everything. It was great.

The same is true in the Trans Am community. It is disheartening. 20 years ago I sold my 79 TA for an embarrassing cheap price by todays standards thinking that I could eventually get the 4spd. model that I really wanted. Rusted out junk with no engine and transmission is selling for more than I sold my rust free, damage free TA for. That car now is going for $16-!8,000.00. So I decided to try and find the 1990 Fox body 5spd. That I used to have. It was a beefed up police package. I found it but the new owner isn't interested in selling, he wants to fix it up and get involved in the Mustang road rally community which I am happy for because it has sentimental value to me, so I am glad it has survived. Looking around I have since learned the Fox body has exploded also.$$$$. What it has come down to is the value is based on what anyone is willing to pay. The days of finding a decent vehicle at a reasonable price is a thing of the past. Unless gas gets too expensive to drive them, personally joy riding has already become a thing of the past for me. I wish you all well in your pursuit in finding your dream car. But the gentleman posting this article (KASL Customs) is correct, don't invest alot in a vehicle that you won't get your money out of.

I found the owner and he told me he bought it from original owner and it’s never seen an Ontario winter but hasn’t been started in a year. Car has 80,000 original kms. It needs paint, the interior reassembled , the drive train probably re sealed and a 5 speed swap . I offered $4000 which I thought was fair. Hello Mustang lovers. This is Ted from Texas. I have had 4 Mustangs in my life. The one I currently have is a 1984 Mustang GT350 T-tops. It was a garage car in Austin Texas and now it is in San Antonio Texas. It's up on the road and driving but still needs a lot of work. Still paid good money for it. 5,500. Most of the car was in good shape. But it's sat for a long time he ran the car but he never moved it. But she is doing good now. I named her Betty White. I 100% agree with you...but anything is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it and I have seen some crazy purchases this year. I think it is a sign of hyper inflation, low interest/easy money, and shortages in the supply chain. 1 1/2 - 2 years from now I think the fox body market will correct and there will be many people sitting on cars they will have to take a loss in. You'll have a flood of cars later from those individuals who refused to sale due to the loss 15 - 20 years from now as they die out and their families liquidate.

    • @KASLCustoms

Interesting theory for sure. I think that the Foxbody cars are going up in value just in general, however there is no doubt in my mind that the parts (Paint, interior, engine parts etc.) are definitely susceptible to inflation and helping drive the price of the more modified foxes up for sure. Thanks for reaching out and sharing!

The prices are not out of control. They are actually still really cheap. Let's look at basic math. 1990 GT Hatch was 14k original sticker price. Adjusted for inflation it's is $29,626 dollars. SO if you see a mint FACTORY one for sale the price is still close to that. That means the car didn't appreciate in 30years! It's selling for the same amount of money! It SEEMS like ALOT to the average idiot because they can't comprehend why a car 30yrs old with 30,000 miles is selling for 24k. It's the same number it's just adjusted for inflation.
Cars are not good investments. Lol just enjoy it and don't think of it as a money maker, but a smile maker.

I'm all in on continued increasing prices. It won't last forever but probably has a decade more at least or until our generation gets too old to spend the money they earned. Its nice to finally be into a car I can improve and not be upside down in value. I couldn't justify the spend if that wasn't the case and its why my 90's Roadmaster wagon barely gets ahead year to year. If its totaled in an accident I can't replace it or recover the money in it. The fox, gets stolen, its wroth more today than I have in it.
Realistically the cars are worth exactly what people will pay, not a dime more or less. That said if I did have to sell it I care enough to make sure it has the right home at the right price, but won't put that expectation on anyone else's shoulders.

When rich dudes started chasing muscle cars after the 1987 stock market crash, a big benefit for all of us was that demand created supply. No longer did you have to tear apart a clean 383 Mopar to save a rusty 426 Hemi--you could even save a 340 Mopar with resto parts. so how do you handle the rise in Mustang prices and the market in parts it creates for you? real simple--go buy a Thunderbird and enjoy all the same go-fast parts out there. Even if you found a low mileage Mustang, its rubber gaskets and fluid are so wasted by Grandfather Time you're looking at a rebuild. I've owned both Mustangs and Turbo T'birds (ie clutch pedal models) so I can tell you...a T bird doesn't weigh as much as you think, it rides far better, it doesn't sound like a tin can when you close the door, it won't get rode hard and put away wet like the average Mustang so there's less you have to repair (like torn out torque boxes) and you get the lower control arms you put on a Mustang to get negative camber without buying the aftermarket plates. Slap on whatever Mustang parts you want, attract less attention from the cops YET get MORE attention at car shows with a sea of Mustangs needing Lambo doors and clear taillights to stand out.
Oh, did you want a lightweight rather than a street machine to go dragging? Then find a Fairmont and do the same. Want more luxury? go find a Cougar or a Lincoln Mark VII.

From my experience recently. A descent notch is hard to find , most have been cut up and caged so finding a V8 notch that's under 3500.00 and hasn't been cut up is like finding a moon rock . I found a 2.3 notch that was blue with blue interior that was basically perfect inside . It needs rockers that's it for metal . The car was 1800.00, running and driving with 150k miles. I'm doing a coyote swap so I didn't care about drive train .. In the mid 90s to about 2010 you could get these cars for 500 to 800 bucks all day long . so when I started looking a for a project, I started laughing when i saw these ridiculous prices . something that has drove em up is guys doing l/s swaps .Since GM stopped making performance cars in early 2k they have nothing to build , They are not interested in the foxbody , mustang or Ford . They just want a light easy to build racecar . so if you're interested in the foxbody as a restoring project and are in to mustangs then the price of these are going to continue to climb which is good if you have one already

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I am all for these foxbody prices going up. Yeah, sucks for the guys trying to get in now, but great for the guys who have been in the community for years pouring blood sweat and tears into their cars.
The example that you gave about your buddy picking up that car for $4000 - I’d like to point out that the car may not be worth $24k after the paint and engine work has been completed. But…the car might be worth the $4000 he paid for it. It would be your buddies option to invest the $20k to bring it up to a condition he is happy with. Whether that condition is worth $24k or not, it was his option to do that. The market doesn’t have to correspond with conditions and preferences of said owner…
Maybe we can argue whether the car is worth $4000, but the price delta would minimal. If it’s only worth $2000, then your buddy is in the hole for $2k… a lot less then if he willingly invested $20k…

Paint, Mods, Originality, Engine shape, I looked at a lot of things before settling on one, almost 18 months! Honestly, I don't want to do it again, I own the one "I want". But I bought it just about 3 months before the upswing in prices came. I got mine for the "old prices". No way in hell are those prices ever coming back. I'd say, do your homework. Think about"what" you can do yourself opposed to what the garage will need to do for you. Just like a House, if the foundation is bad (body, pans, frame), you're going to be dumping a lot of $ to get it right and the return will not be there.
If it's looks like a POS, it most likely IS a POS.

All original examples will and should bring the big money. Rust free and unmolested coupes are where its at nowadays as most of the coupes that no one wanted in the 90's got gutted into drag buckets so there probably arent as many out there that are cherry originals.
Gt's will probably be worth the least except for the cobras. People are throwing together a lot of 4 cyl cars and asking big money to cash in. Those are the cars that the newcomers that dont know much can really get burned on. If you want a nice one and can afford it get a low mile original....DOCUMENTED originals because the odometers are of course only 5 digits.....lol.

Check out the rarest barn find #foxbody mustang ever in my video. Speaking of prices did you know in 1989 a Mustang GT was $15k and the Saleen SSC was $36k? I believe these cars are copying the 60’s muscle cars before them and rare foxbodies will be $$$$ in the future. Nice video I enjoyed it, let’s collaborate

The paint code on my green Coupe is PA. I'm not sure what the paint codes are on the convertible but I do know that the top color is wild strawberry. I have searched for the bottom color a few times now but have not found anything that resembles it...

There has been SEVERAL built notches that have gone well north of 100K...six figures.
It's easier if you stop using dollars as your denominator and use bitcoin.
Last year 2 or 3 bitcoin bought a sick fox body... now you can get the same car for less than half a bitcoin.
    Prices are falling like a rock...down 75 or 80%

Just like real estate...you just need one buyer.
Lots of used car clowns out there hyping LMR etc..lining their own pockets trying to hype up prices.
    BUT..slap a "Cobra Clone" badge on it..now it's 8k. HAHAHAHA
And your right..not worth the effort/money.
That rust bucket belongs in a junk yard.

Yeah its true. All that said, I find the real estate analogy interesting. Long story short, my neighbors place is up for sale and it is listed approx $200K more then every other home for sale. Funny enough, its been on the market for over 60 days and not a single bite... He has a similar idea in that "it only takes one buyer..." which I totally get, but I think the odds are stacked against you...

It's all Brew2l and Fox Media Cast's fault. 😆 🤣 😂 Seriously though back in the day one of the best thing about these cars was they were the best bang for your buck. 24k for a conversion car is nuts. That's close to Terminator money.
