      Could have better voice acting though. It's pretty obvious that she's reading off of prompts. I know they all do, but the others make it less obvious.

      ***** I actually think this video is a big improvement for her, much more naturally enthusiastic than her previous ones. I think it's just a matter of practice and getting used to speaking to a camera. I'm glad because I always wanted to like her as a host, but found it jarring that I could clearly see her reading. I look forward to seeing her become as comfortable and natural in front of the lense (wink wink) as her co-hosts

      Drew Lare I didn't hate on her, nor did I say I could do it better, in fact I know I'm a horrible voice actor. My point is that she's doing this professionally, so she should be a bit better, and she is getting better as she does more videos.

    Can we all just stop talking about how Caitlin looks? Talk about what she's talking about instead of something almost completely irrelevant. Literally every video she presents, the comments are flooded with people talking about how she looks, and this one is no exception. People look different to you. This may be a shocking revelation to some of you, but it's true.

      That's why we need feminism. Every time a woman does something men originally does (like science videos on UA-cam, politics etc) no one focuses on what she's doing or saying, but what she's wearing, her look and wether or not she is worth having sex with. Women are continuously objectified and seen as a tool for men. Therefor we need feminism in this world.

      MiniClown2 I'm being a human being, considering how repeated discussions of Catlin's appearance makes her feel. She presents a show on UA-cam and she's damn good at it, and we should leave it at that.

    Could you guys talk about the "great attractor" and our local cluster of galaxies moving towards an "unknown supermassive object"?
    I've even heard that there is a group of galaxies being pulled towards a point that may be "outside" of our universe (possibly the influence of another universe O_O).
    I find these things totally mind blowing.

      that just sounds like wild speculation, there are still to many things we don't understand, dark matter/energy, unable to join general relativity and quantum mechanics etc, our theories aren't perfect.
      btw, just wanted to add that i think the host is doing a good job, she is energetic and it seems like she cares for what she is talking about, keeps it interesting.

    • @kregah666

      Pivitrix mostly everything are wild speculation, i dont really believe its a another universe or its something outside our own universe, i find those theories ridiculous, but the galaxy clusters are being attracted to something outside of the observable universe. i find the great attractor and the dark flow theories fascinating.

    An exceptional explanation, such energy! My only complaint is that the graphics, beautifully done, were only shown for maybe two seconds! I barely had time to appreciate and LEARN FROM THEM. Rather, too much time was given to showing the host. Such an easy fix; more and longer graphics.

      +Akshay Peter I agree. I was following most of it, but for a new subject, sometimes I need maybe 3 seconds to process/picture what I just heard. I was not able to do that here. I talk fast when I'm nervous. Perhaps that was the case here? Also, a couple more examples of concepts/analogies would be helpful.

    • @libertasetveritas

      +Danielle M You did perfectly fine. It just needs to be slow especially because its not an easy to grasp topic. The listener's brain wont be able to process so much info in such a short time especially if the topic is things we cant correlate in day to day lives, and also if the speed is more than a normal talking speed. I think when you explain something, you need to talk even slower than a normal person - to person conversation.. Anyway all the best :)

Since she first started appearing on camera there has been a never-ending succession of smeg-for-brains jerkwads saying "Your ugly" "You should wear more makeup" "Your teeth..." and when they get shot down for their sexist attitudes they change it to "You talk too fast."

      SPOILER ALERT FOR X3:
      So in the after credits of X3, there's a comatose man that Moira's working on, who suddenly says her name, to which she responds "Charles?". Professor X transferred his consciousness (this was discussed earlier in the film) to his twin brother (I've been told this was in the comics, but humans lie, so yeah). My theory is that, as a top-level mind mutant, Xavier constructed a new body telekinetically out of new atoms and transferred his consciousness back from coma guy. Hope that at least helped!! DFTBA!

    I read from a sci-fi book (_Existence_, from David Brin) that you could use our sun's gravity to create a ridiculously powerful telescope. You would need the telescope to be orbiting around the orbit of Neptune or so, and you would stare back into the sun and use its gravity lens to examine objects on the other end.
    Perhaps you could do an episode on these hypothetical (or perhaps even proposed) super-telescopes :D

    Out-of-focus lenses produce multiple images? Who gave you that idea?
    It's a distortion that's causing the multiple images. That's a completely different type of optical aberration.

    • @EmanuelMay
      @EmanuelMay 10 років тому +3

      Well, lenses are kind of distorted. But you have to be nearly blind if you have glasses that have big and distorted enough lenses to produce distinguishable multiple images when out of focus.

    • @dLichti
      @dLichti 10 років тому +1

      Penny Lane Gravitational lenses don't work exactly like regular optical lenses. In gravitational lenses, light is refracted more if it passes closer to the center of the lense. In regular lenses, light is refracted less if it passes closer to the center of the lense.
      Therefore, gravitational lenses don't have a focal point like regular lenses have. Instead, they have a focal line which is the line from the observer through the lense. Everything on this line will appear as an Einstein ring, regardless of the distance. Only the radius of the ring changes accordingly to the distances.
      Double images of the same object would be caused by an irregular geometry of the lensing object.

    • @unvergebeneid
      @unvergebeneid 10 років тому

      dLichti Very interesting, thanks! :) Although it should maybe be noted that when you say "normal lenses" you mean these carefully crafted things that are _made_ by people to produce an image. Galaxies and dark matter halos probably don't care all that much about their imaging qualities in the first place. So even if they were somehow to behave like huge chunks of glass, they would still distort as hell.
      All this doesn't change the fact BTW that out-of-focus lenses don't produce double images which actually was my initial point. I wish your explanation of how exactly the distortions come about was in the video. Instead we get the obligatory sloppy research moment that practically every SciShow episode has at least one of.

    Is the lensing affect brought on by gravitation causing a higher density of light to travel in the center or around the circumference of the lense? Also is it particularly ball shaped? or really more of a contact lense. I think if we've proved gravitational lensing then we should be able to virtually visualize the shape of a lense around an object? And are there researchers developing a way to measure space density in the fabric itself?

    The first observation of gravitational lensing was not QSO 0957 in 1979. In 1919, Sir Arthur Eddington observed the deflection of light due to the gravity of the sun - the first empirical observation which confirmed Einsteins theory of general relativity.

    Gravitational lensing was the way they ascertained that there are more planets out there than can be detected by all the other techniques; I used the data in class two years ago. What if the large object gravity is not bending the small photon but the small photon is magnetic in nature, in other words a small magnet, & when it passes an object the photon's magnetic field interacts with the object? If I shot a magnetic bullet past a piece of steel it would bend slightly towards the steel.

    Could you guys describe what EXACTLY the Oberth Effect is? I've been using it in KSP and read the wiki article. I get how to use it, but don't really understand 'why' it works.

    So with gravitational lensing and time it takes for light to travel in mind, is the image of space we see different from the objects space thats actually there?

    Why does light go wider around and away from the the massive object and not converging toward the object? As spectime has a "dimple" at hte location of the object?
