      Clearly it isn't new. What *is* new is the parameters that have been set for "planet nine" make it reasonable that it could be found through observation.
      A few more objects in similar orbits have been found since this video was made, which gives more information about the likely mass, distance and orbital period of a potential "planet nine".

      It's just a probe, and it's only like ~128 AU away from the sun. The Oort cloud being like 2000 AU away makes it pretty much unlikely it'll ever reach it intact enough that we could check it out.

      You're talking about Voyager1. It reached interstellar space, but still technically hasn't left the solar system. Also, the Oort Cloud is approximately a light year out. Voyager is no where close to a light year out. And sadly the cameras have been shut down on the probe for energy conservation. It is still transmitting some data though.

    I can imagine perhaps 1000 years in the future when we are able to travel through space with practical engineering, they will look back at us thinking how ignorant we were about our knowledge with our 8 planets. They will probably log hundreds of hundreds new dwarf planets still unknown to us lol i wonder what they will name them.

    I find it sad that in Reid's video, there are 18 comments (in top comments) before I get to one that actually talks about Reid as a person. Every comment before was in discussion of the video or some scientific aspect, or the two comments about the thumbnail looking like a dick. Whereas you go and look at the top comments in Caitlin's video, and within the first three there is some comment about her being ugly or annoying or not wanting to watch her. I really wish people watching these videos would just keep focusing on the science of it, and not the attractiveness of the individuals presenting it.

    • @Bloodmuffin6
      @Bloodmuffin6 10 років тому +35

      We can detect earth like planets around other stars because they interact with those stars very directly. This planet would be so far from the sun that almost no light from the sun would reflect off of it, and none of our techniques for extrasolar planets work on planets in our own solar system (this channel has some good videos for more info on this).
      Or, in the case of neutron stars, which are as small as a few kilometers in diameter, we can detect them because they are unbelievably bright. Size has little to do with detectability, it's all a matter of how much light they send our way.

    • @Morturious
      @Morturious 10 років тому +5

      Because the objects are so small, far from any stars, and emit no light of their own. Thus, they are almost impossible to see. Whereas stars can be big and bright enough to see from quite ridiculous distances, these comparatively miniscule balls of ice are basically invisible against the pitch black backdrop of space, and are far away enough to not even register as a discernible black speck in front of any stars we might happen to be looking at through the cloud.

      Detecting a star is very simple (relatively simple of course) than detecting a planet. A planet does not emit any sort of radiation, and if it does it's usually covered by more powerful radiation from the stars. Even though detecting an exoplanet is hard we have done it multiple times, but detecting a planet in the darkest part of the solar system is really difficult. First of all it will most likely be frozen (almost no emissions of radiation) and also it will not reflect any light because it's too far away from the sun. Our best hope is that its massive gravity makes the core hot, giving us a chance to detect it.

    • @puncheex2
      @puncheex2 10 років тому +1

      ...because those small thing far away (I assume you mean planets around other stars) are detected not by trying to eyeball them but rather by detecting special circumstances that apply to them. Those same circumstance do not apply to comets in the Oort, and neither do eyeballs, so we're stymied.

    Why can we see galaxies millions of light years away but can't see the oort cloud which is only .3 light years away?
    Imagine it is a really dark night...
    2 miles away there are 10,000 candles burning. While 20 feet away there is a dime...which are you more likely to see?
    The hubble space telescope is fine tuned to see objects that are light years in size from very far distances. Trying to use it to see something very tiny but very close would be like trying to see detail on your finger if you hold it 1/4 of an inch away from your eye. It's almost like you see right through it.

With our Oort cloud reaching about 1 light year from our sun, I imagine the Alpha Centauri system would have a similar Oort cloud meaning the distance between the two would only be something like 2 light years. Furthermore, it took einstein 10 years to prove his theory of general relativity, he would claim to know that gravity bends light, creating a gravitational lense, astronomers working with him proved it. It took years to do as well retweaking a few thibgs in his theory, but he eventually had the evidence he needed. It was the same thing when he was proving that space-time is gravity and that the bigger the mass of an object, the more it warps time and space (space-time).

      Not quite. The milky way is about 100 000 light years in DIAMETER, so about a 50 000 light year radius from the center to the edges. That puts us about two-fifths (40%) of the way from the center. Still cool though :)

      1) The Milky Way is 100.000. Light years.
      2) A quarter of 100.000 is 25.000.
      3) The distance between the solar system and the center is 19.200 light year.
      4) 19.200 < 25.000.
      5) 19.200 is less than a quarter of our galaxy.

    • @rew13091985
      @rew13091985 8 років тому +4

      You guys are both technically correct, but you're both thinking differently. To Jack, the distance between our solar system and the center of our galaxy is less than 25% of the diameter of our galaxy because 19,200 ly is less than 25,000 ly, which is 25% of 100,000 ly. To Unicorn, the position of our solar system is 40% of the total distance from the center of our galaxy to the edge because we are located 19,200 ly away from the center out of a 50,000 ly radius.

    Two questions. If the Oort cloud is a sphere surrounding our solar system, then we would have to look through the Oort cloud to see anything beyond our solar system. Since we can see billions of stars then we must be observing those stars through the Oort cloud so why have we not observed the Oort cloud? Second. Since we can see billions of stars which are centers of their own solar systems, have we observed Oort type clouds around any other solar system?

    • @Dorgilo
      @Dorgilo 10 років тому +2

      For your first question, although the cloud itself is large, the objects it contains are tiny, and very spread out, so it would be highly unlikely that we would see something. In answer to the second, I certainly haven't heard of anything like that being discovered, probably for the same reason - the only real method we've had of detecting exoplanets has been how the planet affects the amount of light coming from the star (it dims at certain intervals), so again, it would be extremely difficult to spot anything within an Oort-type cloud.

    • @loyseugene
      @loyseugene 10 років тому

      Thank you for your comment. I could see your first answer but in regards to the second. We can see light bouncing off of gas clouds in space and in the video the Oort cloud is described as being maybe a light year across for our solar system, conceivable larger for larger stars than ours. My point is it would represent a huge sphere of ice particles that should reflect their parent star's light like a dim halo. Not looking for any single object but the combined reflectivity of the entire cloud. Just wondering if anyone has ever observed such a halo effect around any star, if so it could be proof of Oort clouds.

I have a request though, that you use the word "theory" in it's scientific sense and not to mean hypothesis. Oort Hypothesized the existence of the cloud that surrounds the solar system, since his idea had not been tested nor come from direct observation. Once others had taken his idea and tested it they started to formulate a cohesive explanation for their observations, which would then be called a theory.

    • @Jacobwojo
      @Jacobwojo 10 років тому

      a theory is something that has been around for some time and has lots of supporting evidence but is either not fully completed or explained even though nothing disproves it YET. Time and increasing evidence will make it a scientific LAW. In case u didn't know. :)

    • @geniusmp2001

      WojosProductions Not true. Theories do not become laws. Laws are simple, mathematical expressions, basic facts and simple equations that apply universally; they just tell you what happens, they don't explain it. Theories are well-tested explanations of phenomena, supported by multiple lines of evidence, which provide the framework for understanding what we observe.

      A while ago, some scientists noticed that meteorite/comet impacts on Earth seemed to be occurring at regular intervals (about 26 million years). That suggests that the Oort cloud would be sending comets at us in a cyclic pattern.
      Which in turn suggests that something would be disturbing the Oort cloud every 26 million years. So it was hypothesized that the Sun has a companion star, Nemesis - a smaller, non-shining brown dwarf in a veeeery distant, extremely elliptical orbit, with an orbital period of 26 million years - that flings comets at us every time it passes by.
      It's a pretty elegant hypothesis, but apparently the whole "regular impact event" thing isn't very well supported anymore, so there's no reason to assume Nemesis exists.

      Hey, it's a fair summary of scientific knowledge, or any knowledge at all, really. I don't really know that the chair I'm sitting on exists, but the world behaves as if there's a chair there, so I assume there is. Likewise, our solar system behaves as if it has an Oort cloud.
      We're an immensely visual species, and we value visual observation higher than perhaps any other form of evidence, but it's really just another form of observation. Blind people have to rely on others, and they get by just fine, philosophically speaking. :P Just to take an example from elsewhere in science, nobody's ever seen an electron, either.
