working on mine. My rig 2023 Frontier 6 foot bed. I am putting in a decked drawer system, then a mattress on that. Its for sleeping. I will have a screened tent for stove and sitting in. I want to be able to back into it.
Good video. I'm looking at retirement. This looks about the size of my work truck There's a lot of good ideas here. Thanks for mentioning safety. As a kid, we camped at Yosemite in January. There was 6 of us in a truck camper. My sisters and mother passed out, I was breathing hard, the lantern we used for light was dimming. Dad could not get the candle lit. Matches kept going out. For some reason, he opened the door. The lantern got bright, Mom woke up, and I could breath. We were on the brink of suffocating from lack of oxygen. Probably CO build up too. Learned about ventilation that night.
great set up. I did a 30-40 day road trip a couple years ago. I strapped my tool box up against one side and put an air mattress on it. I used the inside for storage and hitch haul for water and generator. Thing I learned on that trip was I brought way more stuff than I actually needed. Next trip, I need better lights, small fridge, and nice power supply.
I’m getting ready to build out a 7x14 cargo trailer as a camper and a travel home since I split time with family between Oklahoma and Tennessee. Some good useful information, nice job 👍
First off I gotta mention the beard, absolute ZZ-Top level awesome! Love the walk through on the camper build and simplistic sourced solutions/custom touches you did. 😎👍🏻
I put 200 watts of solar on the top of my cap. That lets me leave the Iceco Go20 on 365 at near freezing. I travel twice a month with 3 days on the road each time, and so there's always something cold in my fridge. Of course different than your needs, I just leave everything set up in my truck as I have no real reason to empty it. It's sort of home now. One big thing I would change, but haven't gotten the Round2It yet, is to move electrical controls from near the cab back to near the tailgate. When it's dark, I want to turn the lights on without having to crawl all the way to the front. Lesson learned. Enjoyed watching your set up. Good video. Kent
Thank you, Kent. I have two different solar setups but I haven’t hooked them up yet as I’m still undecided on how I want to set the top of the cap up storage/space-wise. Your constant fridge setup is one of my goals as I travel almost weekly for at least an overnight and don’t like cleaning it out each time I come home. On your solar, are you running it to a power station or battery setup? I have an LED strip light that’s factory for my cap that I didn’t cover in the video. It’s super convenient as its switch is located at the tailgate. It went out once and your definitely right, climbing in to turn on lights is a pain.
@@whiskeydogoutdoors I have a Jackery 300 that's a nice size for portability, but with 200 Watts of solar I am able to keep a 100 Ah battery charged as well as keeping the Jackery topped off. I do need the Jackery for keeping my tablet charged. It's a Surface Pro, and it won't take a charge off of the solar charged battery or the main battery in my truck. The Jackery will take a charge from the solar of course, so I use it as kind of a pass through to charge the tablet. For that matter my cell phone prefers charging off the Jackery over the solar battery as well, but i will eventually charge. The tablet simply refuses to do so. I hope this helps your decision. It wasn't something I even considered when I built my truck/system, but it's something very important to me since I live in two places.
Your setup is well thought out minimal equipment so you and preacher can get away and spend some quality time with your best friend. Mine is a coatahola named Charly. He makes my life exciting again.
Nice set up . I love my camper capper , my bed is set up like yours , but thats about it . Everything is in totes and my icechest . I use a tarp to creat a canopy when set up at camp .
What do you use for your cooking set up? I'm not comfortable about cooking inside a vehicle or tent after I had a gas stove go up in flames due to a leaky O ring seal.
Great set up. Well done I wished I could find a build for my truck which has a front aux fuel tank installed The only bed I can make is putting a platform which lays on top of the tank. Thus the clearance is less and not very adequate to top ceiling in Leer topper. Need to experiment
Got me a new MX ordered for my 2024 Ram 2500. For twenty years I’ve ran the cab height covers. Never camped as elaborate as your set up. Usually an air mattress or cot. But with these new battery generators I do want to try a little more things like you have going on. I’m really wondering about a solar generator too.
Those MX caps are nice, I’m sure you’re gonna enjoy that. I almost went that route on mine but needed a more level space for kayaks. I’m redesigning me electric back there and incorporating solar as well as a new battery setup to compliment my power stations I run now and possibly takeover the majority of my power needs. I’m collecting parts now and will have some videos on it the next month.
😂 Yeah the wheel wells on that 2500 don’t leave much clearance once you get the bed built over them. I’m right at 6’ too. Doesn’t bother me at all but others might wanna mid-rise. I carry gear up top and sometimes a kayak so that was a no go for me.
We recently picked up a used Leer camper shell for our 8’ bed and have camped several times and love it. We use our ice chest as a step to get in and out. What do you use?
A running start and a prayer 😂. I just hop up most times if I’m in a hurry, but I have a small folding step I got from Home Depot I believe. It’s plastic and not ideal at all but works ok.
We ran wire from the battery through a fuse and into a panel mounted to the front of the truck bed. Power station plugs in there. I saw “we” but a friend who owns Green Country 12v does all my wiring.
My cap came with an internal handle that actuates the cap door lock. I think that’s what you’re referring to? Forgive me if not and please explain a bit more.
Hey there. I will be moving to Oklahoma in a couple of months for my job. Closer to northern OK. If you are close to there, what spots would you recommend for truck camping?
Man there’s so many. From state parks to wildlife management areas, plus we’re just minutes away from the Ozark and Ouachita Mountain ranges. What do you prefer, water, woods, improved campsites or boondocking?
Curious as to the sleeping bed size. Foam that I'm finding is 24" wide so I didn't want to take up more space with the bed but obviously want to sleep good. Underbed storage needs to be planned and compatible so did u get containers and design bed configuration around that?
Are you talking about the top platform size, or the base dimensions themselves? As to storage, I did not build to any container spec, I built to my body size and wheel well height with overall comfort being the deciding factor on width. The mattress I linked in the description will give you the rough dimensions of the top. For under bed storage organization I really only have one dedicated tub in there and don’t use a of on it. Everything else fits and doesn’t move at all.
I have a Dodge ram 1500. I want to use it for travel. My question is,my tailgate is very heavy. I want to be safe, so how can I close my truck up when I'm in it. Have any suggestions
When you say close up are you talking about closing the tailgate with you in the bed in either a tent or some type of camper shell? I just wanna make sure I’m understanding correctly because I think I can help.
I secured them to the carpeted cap via Velcro that’s glued onto the magnet with one of the gorilla glue contact adhesive products. Here in Oklahoma, pretty much everything I tried failed due to the heat and humidity, until I switched to this.
True. But I put kayaks up there and it’s already a pain and almost impossible solo at the trucks height. The MX is nice for sure, but the height really doesn’t bother me at all.
Does the beard get in the way when you are using power tools? I have a ponytail and I have to be mindful of it - seems a beard would be more difficult to manage. Female so not growing a beard, just curious. Good video and great dog!

Can you explain the lighting purpose..you mentioned "camping or anything else you might be doing?" What else might you be doing? 👀 😂 WE wanna know. Now I would of gave this video a 5 star review, unfortunately I can only give it a solid 3.5 you had two (2) products mentioned that pertained to fire, and you couldn't manage to come up with one firemen joke, not one?!! Maybe next time. As always, thanks for sharing great content! 👍🏼
Dude your comments always crack me up! I’m sure lots of people read them and then have so many questions 😂
Is that a 6ft bed?
It’s 6’4”
How long to grow that beard? I’d imagine you’ll be a totally different person when you shave 😮…thanks for all the tip.
About two years for me, but mine grows pretty fast compared to many. And yeah 😂 I definitely look different.

@WhiskeyDogOutdoors, WOW! I'm surprised your channel is just now being recommended in my feed. And I'm surprised you don't have way more subscribers?!

I'm looking forward to watching your other 42 videos, and looking forward to watching what's to come, as well. Keep up the great work! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 I have also shared your channel with a few of my friends.
Not sure if you've ever watched @AdventureJason_, but he's another RAM Truck owner who has his bed set-up similar to yours, as well as an off-toad trailer. He's someone you might enjoy watching?!

Thank you! We’re a pretty young channel and I’m still figuring it all out, but I’m glad you like what you’ve seen so far! My goal is to have something up weekly and have several trips already scheduled through summer, so stay tuned! And I appreciate you telling your friends, very cool, man!
Thanks for the recommendation on Adventure Jason, I just subscribed.

I dig your set up. I’d suggest less Amazon products and buy local.
As a small business owner, I shop local every chance I get. Unfortunately, if it’s not offered or is at significant markup, I have to look elsewhere.
