I enjoyed your very thorough video. A note about the current draw of an AC: All units draw their least amount of current when first run. After warmup the Wattage increases. It will cost more but an Energy Star inverter model could make it possible to run the unit on a small generator. The smallest is 8000 BTU and $300, but they are very thrifty to run. Non-inverter units have only one compressor speed though they have 2- or 3 fan speeds, so they draw virtually the same amount of Wattage on "low" and "high".
Great video with good info! No matter what people may say, the commentary is great. This video has given me some ideas for a possible setup for my tent camping. Cheers and safe travels.
Another okie here and I know those Oklahoma summers can be brutal. This winter I’m starting a cargo trailer build and I had guy tell me something a few years ago when I first started getting interested in doing a build. He told me those mini splits are nice, very efficient, however if it goes out at 7pm or your in the middle of nowhere trying to find an a/c tech to come to you is going to be an issue. With a window unit it’s an easy swap out, every Lowe’s, Home Depot, Ace or Walmart open somewhere and just about every town has a hardware or lumber yard that sells these units and the plus is they are cheap compared to a mini split. Nice build and information.
I did the same thing with my 6x12 enclosed motorcycle trailer, with an added home made man door insert, with door below and 5000btu ac in a hole above the door. Slept super comfortable in it...
Back when i tent camped, i used to put a small window unit outside and let it blow thru a mesh window. Worked like a charm. People thought i was nuts though.
I had the IceCove 2500 BTU ($1300) in our roof top tent in Moab this summer. It was 108 and it took it a few hours to drop it into the high 70s at night. I returned it bc it just doesn't do what I know a $150 window unit can. I replied here hoping someone will go your route over the expensive self contained units. I'm from OK too btw.
Thank you for this great clip. The concept is unique and very practical. I have a van, but I could see how this very same idea can apply with my back doors. Sharing ideas are seeds for further development which I really appreciate out of everyone who is willing to share.
@WhiskeyDogOutdoors, GREAT video! GREAT idea! Nice job on the false tailgate. Crocs is all I wear and have worn for the last 20+ years. Nothing beats a nice pair of Off-road Crocs. Preferably in Mossy Oak Camo, but brown works, too.
You don't need a gasoline generator. It can definitely run on power station like the EcoFlow Delta 2. It can handle the surge when the compressor to kick in.
Man you have a very very nice truck camping setup man. I really like your setup. Thank you so much for sharing your setup man. I need to do a truck camping setup my self. Right now I'm using my bed of my truck to carry my kayak. But i like to set it up for camping for my put in or take out . Just need to know how i am going to carry my kayak. I like your Crocs man. Ain't nothing wrong with wearing crocs man. Everyone is wearing them now so you fit right in with everyone. I am glad you did the video in your crocs. I know they are very comfortable to wear & if they are very comfortable on your feet 🦶 you should wear them. It would be awesome to see you wearing your flip flops 🩴 too man in the video too. With the Humidity and the heat crocs or flip flop 🩴is what you should wear man. I wouldn't be embarrassed to wear flip flops 🩴 or crocs or be barefooted 👣 on your video man. I wish I could wear crocs but my feet 🦶 are very very extremely wide & very big at sz15 6E wide with very very chubby fat wide toes that are Evenly straight across making my foot very very Extremely wide at 6 1/2 inches wide from my big toe to my lil toe. Crocs will not fit me because my toes being Evenly straight across & crocs are made for toes that are at a 45° Degrees angle & my toes are Evenly straight across which means that my 4th & 5th toes get crushed & hurt me really really bad. But i have 6 boys that have very wide feet 🦶 as well & 5 of them wear flip flops 🩴 & crocs. My 3rd son John he has a very very extremely wide feet 🦶 just like mine & he can't wear any close toes footwear like me & he wish he could wear crocs. He is just like me we both can't wear shoes , socks , or boots because of how extremely wide our feet 🦶 are & how evenly straight across our toes are. Good video buddy thanks you so much for sharing your videos. I really enjoy watching your videos & watching preacher especially when he is playing in the water to cool down man.
Thanks for the detailed video ! I'm gonna copy you for my truck. I spend time fishing the Colorado River in AZ / CA and it's constantly 110+ from June through September. Sometimes it'll get nort of 120 ! The problem is that being a desert with all rocks & sand, it holds that heat and never really cools off at night, making it almost imposible to sleep. During the day you can always jump in the water and get under some shade . . . but when night comes and it's time to sleep, it can be BRUTAL. I already have a Honda eu2000i generator . . . I guess it's time to start shopping for an AC unit ! Thanks again for a great video . . . . and BTW, COOL DOG !!!
Comments like yours mean so much! Thank you! I’ve camped in similar climates and terrain, and know exactly what you’re talking about. Good luck with your set up, I hope it works as well for you as it has for me.
Have you ever considered cutting the false tailgate in half and making it hinged? Might make it easier to carry/store? Great video by the way. Righteous beard!!!
Man I haven’t but I really don’t have any issues like that with this one. It’s very light and is easy to install and store for me. Might be a good idea for some though. And thank you!
Wouldn't using a standup unit be easier? You could route and vent the hot air output to the side window of your topper. Mounting the vent tube may be a bit more tricky but it would not impede getting into the truck bed.
I think cost between the two units is a factor for sure , as is size and ease of setup. But the main reason I didn’t was due to the power draw, especially on compressor startup. I run this setup off of a small 1k propane generator when not on shore power, so that was a major concern as all the standups would trip the overload sensor on the generator. I think there’s merit to the possibility though. So much so that I have a standup unit right now in my garage that I’ll be using in an upcoming episode, it just won’t be in my truck. However, it has spurred some thought and I think I have figured out a way to run a standup a bit more discreetly and with easier plumbing into the sleeping area. The temperatures where I’m at right now will be a factor on whether or not I get that video up in the near future or wait until next summer.
As for myself, I do not camp in the summer. Spring and fall and sometimes winter, strictly because it's easier to heat the truck bed than keep it cool. And as I am now older, 65 years old, I cannot deal with the heat anymore.
I live off grid at 5500' northern AZ. (Originally, Okie!!) Have 6kbtu window unit but was spending $15 in 2000k genny per day. Ummm, no. Spent most of summer in south Utah Duck Creek Village elevation, North Rim GC Nat forest, north Flagstaff - boondocking. But... I can run window AC on eco and genny on eco with box fan so now saving me gas $.
Oh, off grid in 26' travel trailer remote. Truck bed shell with simple build out. My half husky appreciates window AC but definitely prefers wild camping at 8-11k tho.
Thank you and while valid, I think there’s space here for both entertaining and informative content. Although the first part of that is subject to interpretation lol.
I actually enjoyed the talking. Not like you're in a class being lectured, but more like standing in the driving way talking to your buddy. And Preacher....❤ that boy. Subbed
I’m so glad you found value in the video. And thank you for the beard compliment. I braid it from time to time here on the channel, but don’t think I’ve worn them with beads here.
I've watched a fair number of videos with a.c. widow units. Every one of them still requires an electrical outlet. If I'm at my house... I'm just going to go inside. I still haven't seen a battery and inverter set up. I question the applications of this air conditioning system because I'm unable to carry a wall socket around in me pocket.
I haven’t had any issues to date, but I almost always run a Slumberjack Roadhouse tarp off the back in bad weather just to keep the truck interior clean and provide some dry seating area when outside.
I don't know why you guys go through all that trouble and clutter. Why not just put a fan in the pass-through window of your pickup and run the air conditioner in the cab of your truck by idling pushing that cold air with the fan to the back of the truck?
For several reasons. First the idling of an engine is super inefficient, contributes significantly to the wear and tear of a vehicle’s motor (especially on hemi engines like mine), can be very costly from a fuel perspective, depletes fuel that we need when camping remotely and far away from gas stations, and the truck ac lacks the btu’s necessary to actually cool the bed area during excessive heat. Trust me, I’m always looking for a more simple solution!

I’ve done that as well with a big family tent we have lol

Gotcha. I was just in Yukon a month or so ago to teach a class.

Bad timing moment...I had just taken a sip of whiskey the moment you said you get in the truck seductively and I almost lost it! 🤣

Don’t blame ya there.
I'm sending this video to my wife. she will love it and we may be able to brave the heat camping now. Thanks.

Ac is a must for hot /humid summer camping .
It sure is for me anymore.
You can run that with a power bank element. Life is running a AC unit of a power station with solar watch element life.

Thank you for a great video. Simple, explain the construction simple…
Glad you found value in it.
I have the ecoflow wave 2 & it works great, really small & portable.
We should talk more about that.
You don't need a gasoline generator. It can definitely run on power station like the EcoFlow Delta 2. It can handle the surge when the compressor to kick in.
It will run it, as other similar power stations will, but not long enough to be relevant in a camping situation.
AMAZING, those color jeans!

Thanks for bringing me here Mike from Crazy Quady.
We’re glad you’re here!

Sort of. I have a full bed rug (sides and bottom) and the cap is carpeted. It’s much more comfortable than without those two.

It's called a POWER INVERTER..
Swamp coolers don't do shit in high humidity environments like Oklahoma.
Nope.
Look at Chuck in Corc lol
Shhhh…
Have you ever thought of using Dry Ice to cool the inside of the back of the truck? Open a cooler once it gets cool simply close?
Dry ice in a confined space is dangerous and can lead to suffocation so while I’ve used it a few times for unrelated causes, I avoid it when camping.
