Canopy stalls freak me out too. You get that feeling of falling again, and know that that is NOT what is supposed to be happening while under your canopy.
I will add the same disclaimer as you did... Do NOT take advice from me! That said, when stalling your canopy (which everyone should - above your decision altitude), once you have stalled it, your natural reaction will probably be to immediately let up on the toggles and get your canopy flying again. But - do it slowly. A quick release of your toggles can make things go funky quick (line twists being common). Just remember that you are wanting this to happen, and remain calm. Your canopy wants to reinflate.

Yeah that's what I learned as well. I need to be slower on this canopy than my last one, that Triathlon is real forgiving of accidental input and recovers from a stall super easily. The Sabre 2 dove quite a bit and hooked a left 90° before I knew what was happening. I'm gonna try it again and also do a rear riser stall to help get a feel for it. If only this rain would stop! It's been raining like 10 days straight in FL right now
I did my first tandem about 2 months ago. He stalled the canopy and said "oh shit"! It freaked me out lol. With that being said I really liked the feeling it gave me. Had I known he was going to do it (or what it even was) I would've enjoyed it more rather than feeling like something was wrong and I was about to die
I just found your channel a day or two ago and I'm loving it!!! I started going through some vids and realized you used to skydive at Mile High in Longmont Colorado. I live only 5 min from there so got pretty stoked! I've went skydiving for my eighteenth birthday there this year and I'm about to start skydiving classes. I'll be looling forward to your videos from here on out!

Thanks for sharing, I'm new to the sport and vids like this are really handy for someone like me, I find the canopy accuracy to be quite challenging so the more info I can get the better 🤙🏻
Thanks man I appreciate it! Canopy accuracy is tough and really specific to your glide rate and wingloading. It’s a good idea to take more than one canopy course even though only one is required for a B license. Fly your canopy a bit more to 100-200 jumps then take another one when you downsize and get some pro tips

Hey PernDog, I started watching your videos a couple months ago before I began my AFF Course at SkyDive Sebastian just to try to learn as much as I could before getting into SKYDIVING! It turns out that I was on the same plane with you in this video, I'm the one in the back left next to Ian, recognized you easily but didn't get a chance to introduce myself. As soon as I get my A License it would be cool to jump with you!

7 Jumps so far, need Levels 6, 7, 8, could of had my A License by now if it hadn't freakin rained last Saturday, Sunday, Monday & Tuesday. Starting to feel much more comfortable in the SKY. First 3 jumps were a nightmare for me! Going up this Thursday - Tuesday, 6 days, graduate from AFF and maybe have my A License by then. Based out of Miami...

Niiice! Your mentioned your last canopy was a seven cell. Was it Spectre? I stalled my Spectre 190 this weekend for the first time and OMG. Didn't bow tie over my head like the student gear I stalled in my canopy course. Instead it dropped back behind me and lines went super slack. I thought I was going to fall back into the canopy. Scared the poo imogee out of me.
No it’s a Triathlon 175. Real forgiving of stalls, accidental input, and it doesn’t dive very much when you turn. It’s a great canopy and I’m probably gonna go back to it after we have the baby.
I jumped a 168 sqare ft Pilot today for the first time and stalled it in order to get to know it. Got scared and probably lifted the toggles too fast or with bad timing. It line-twisted me and my hands where caught in the lines. Not funny! It flew stable and I could free my hands and kick out if the twists easily. I landed safely, a little shaken, though

Check with your rigger about that, your brake lines might be out of trim! Thanks for watching
You just need to take some wraps on the brake lines. Start with one, if that does not work go to two. But actually, it is a lot easier to stall a canopy using the rear risers as opposed to the brakes. It is also a lot easier to control the canopy during the stall with the rear risers. You can easily change heading etc with the risers. Remember never to panic and release the brakes (or rear risers) slowly. This will prevent the canopy from diving aggressively forward. Keeping your inputs perfectly symmetric will prevent it from sudden turns and line twists. It is also a good idea cross your ankles, bend your knees, and tuck your legs under your butt. This make the rotational inertia of your body much smaller and hence make it easier for it to turn with the canopy.

some canopies are virtually impossible to stall. Like my first Pilot 250. Wraps on the brake lines, rear riser stalls, nothing was able to get a full stall. Only a mild buffet and mush. I hated that thing, was like riding around in a U Haul

Thanks. Nothing special, I do some basic color correction and apply the M31 LUT. I’ve been working a little with some under exposure but I want to dial in the GoPro settings for sure. The hero 4 doesn’t have much dynamic range and the highlights tend to get overexposed.

No problem IO really want to dial in the GoPro footage but mainly I try to achieve a consistent look across the video. It's changed quite a bit over time this is just how I like to do it now. Makes those teals in the sky and ocean really pop
I am an A licensed diver and have so far only flown student canopies. I have never been able to get a student canopy to stall. I have held the toggles down in full brake many times and it just reduces my decent rate to a minimum, with no slack in line tension. I have even released the brakes suddenly with no repercusions. When I try a non-student canopy should I expect it to stall if I pull the toggles down all the way?
I’d ask your rigger at the DZ about that. For student canopies like a navigator, they’re designed to be more safe while learning. They might have long brake lines so smaller students can flare effectively, or been trimmed so that you can’t stall.
As you progress to your A and B license though you’ll go through a canopy course and learn how to stall a canopy. Definitely ease the toggles back up though, higher performance means higher volatility in a stall!
Would be cool to see how you break while landing, like when you start and how much etc.
Good idea! I’d need someone to video from the ground. I do it by feel, estimating my distance from the ground and then trying to plane out.

Due to recent developments as a result of the surgery I had a month and a half ago, and no longer being able to take pain killers, I cannot skydive anymore since my back is too much of a liability safely do it anymore. I was doing the AFF course with the massive use of OTC pain killers (NSAIDs). It absolutely sucks but I value my mobility over the possibility of being crippled for life.
Yeah dude still saving money for the diaper fund but trying to get those jumps in. Once we have the kiddo it will become more difficult-money-wise, because one of us will be staying home because the other gets health insurance...trying to get that figured out.
Bummer about the surgery thing! I injured my back in the military years ago so I feel you on that, I've had some landings that took me a bit of recovery time. I don't think I'll ever swoop just because of the chance of throwing my back out really doesn't sound nice. I try to fly in under 20mph winds, if there's too much shear or turbulence I pull off the load, and no high speed landings. Also I try to tuck and roll if I'm coming in hard. So far I've been able to manage my back health that way. I also do yoga daily and keep stretching the muscles that get stiff.
On the swooping note, the Canopy Piloting Nationals are in Sebastian this year so we are definitely attending and hoping to shoot some video there.

You've got a full deck o' cards. I dunno what I'd do in yours or Amber's situation. Probably stressing the fuck out and losing hair while being excited for the future.
I did AFF 4 without the NSAIDs. It is always the canopy opening that fucks me up. The landings are a non-issue. With about 1,800mg of Advil in my system, I'd feel the pain while driving home. Yes, I realize that is an awful lot of pills I used to down. My back is always hurting and is a consistent 7 on the pain scale. Not only did my gallbladder go to shit on me, causing an ER visit and emergency surgery to remove it, the NSAIDs gave me a nasty ulcer.
On the fourth jump, I almost passed out while slowly descending and puked a couple times because the pain was so severe. I landed way off target and did an involuntary tumble landing. My legs turned into wet noodles due to the severe sciatica I also suffer from. Damn those youthful indiscretions and that oilfield work! I wouldn't recommend anybody work in the oilfields. Yes, lots of money can be made but at a price to one's physical health. It's just not worth it.
Found your business page. It's great stuff. I added a couple comments on a couple topics yesterday. I don't think it'll be too difficult to figure out who I am. I've been sharing the content on there to my veteran family and friends.
