Hey Fixit Guy: My didital Tanikascale failed exactly they way your's did…disconnected black wire from battery case. I went through the same issues did, in trying to open the case with no luck. I was about to give up as well…then I found this video and watching it clued me into taking out the battery case. I had the same problem stripping off a bit of the insulation from the black wire. Easy method…just heat the tip of the wire, very carefully with the soldering iron and the insulation just melts away.

Great video brother. Great way to show there is no need to buy a new one if you just take a minute to check it out might be a easy fix. That’s a great little helper you got there.

Wow, exactly the same problem on my set of tanita scales. Thanks for making it easy for me to find and fix it.

Often times the wire that is used for many consumer electronics have a cheap plastic insulation, which means you can just heat the end of the wire (either with a hot iron or a bic lighter) and the insulation will shrink back. If heat didn't work and you don't have the correct size wire strippers then go at it with your knife. You can only work with the tools you have, right? As for the soldering, tin the wire first (heat the wire and add some solder, flux is your friend here). Then to solder use the iron to heat the solder on the terminal until it melts and add the tinned wire. Just like sweating pipes it is all about heat mass. Great job getting it to work!!!

Great video. This was exactly the issue I had with my Tanita Ironman scale. Those disposable alkaline batteries have a tendency to leak and cause corrosion if they are drained and left in the device for an extended period of time. That's why I try to use rechargeable batteries for stuff like this. They don't leak and corrode like the disposable alkaline ones do.

Thank you TFIG! I didn't know where to start on fixing. Lesson learned: if it looks like no power even with new batteries, check the batter holder connectors.

wow like many others here, my Tanita BF-679W had the exact same issue! Corrosion plus getting bumped around -> black wire snapped off of battery box. Maybe if they hadn't used...24 or 26? gauge wire, this wouldn't have been an issue. The lengths these companies go to in order to save a few pennies. 🙄

  • @czellner00

I have one of these too, it's a tanita bf-680w it talks to you, usually reads out the weight. well, it doesn't talk any more, got a fix for that?

  • @fenerstands

Problem solved. Very helpful video. Thanks a lot👍

Is that Rick from “Pawn Stars” on your desktop? And it is great that you are getting your son involved. Soon he can have his own channel!😊. The deck of the scale probably floats. If removed, you may have had a bit more length of wire to solder. And a clothes pin may act as a hemostat to hold the wire in place.

Good job, I cringed a few times watching it, when your son was closing the knife blade, when you were removing the battery box, tugging on the lid, stripping the wire, soldering with that huge gun and nasty looking tip too. LOL But you got to do what you gotta do to git'er done. Now to carefully trim the insulation off that wire it should be held securely using needle nose pliers holding the wire close to the area you're about to trim off the insulator and carefully make a circular cut around the circumference of the insulation using a razor or exacto knife and not cutting or nicking any of the individual wire strands. I would add another length of black wire of the same gauge to extend the overall length carefully soldering the two pieces together end-to-end and slip a piece of heat shrink tubing down the length to cover the soldered joint, use a hair dryer or heat gun and only enough heat to shrink the tubing and then attach the now lengthened wire to the battery box negative terminal end.

I have a similar scale from same brand that stopped working. After watching this video I pulled the battery cage and found the black wire was disconnected. Perhaps a common problem with these scales.
