Do we realize that this could have been the first time that North and South could have been Top 2 at Miss USA? It was certainly a great year for the Carolinas! While North Carolina was 2nd Runner-Up, South Carolina was crowned Miss USA!

@ driveaustra - Kenya was not the first brown-/dark-skinned national pageant (Miss USA, Miss America) winner. Debbye Turner, who is black and has a brown complexion, was crowned Miss America in 1990,before Kenya (1993). Ironically, it was the first time in history that both Miss America and Miss USA (Carole Gist, first black woman to win USA crown) would hold their respective titles at the same time. Debbye Turner, now Dr. Turner, would hand over her title to Marjorie Vincent in 1991, who is a dark-skinned black woman as well; back-to-back AA Miss Americas. Just FYI.

That was Pat's pageant and crown but I feel at that time they weren't ready for a back to back Black win @ Miss USA. Pat Southall was clearly the winner that night.

Interesting that in 1993, Miss GA (who was white) was leading but lost out to Miss MI (who was black) who actually won the Prelims. One year later, the situation reversed: Miss VA (black) was leading (and she gave an almost identical interview as Miss GA in which both demonstrated their broadcasting skills) and lost out to Miss SC (white), the prelim winner.
It's not unusual for the preliminary winner not to take the crown in pageants sometimes they have one set of judges doing the preliminary judging and another doing the final judging it's rare but it happens
I think if we look at the final question answers, South Carolina displayed a sence of confidence in her final answer even though it may of seemed wrong for her to say that, and Virgina kind of tried too hard to answer the final question with intelligent words! South Carolina kept it nice and simple with a rare sence of confidence!
Kenya was a great Miss USA. I hate the way she was treated at the Miss Universe in Mexico when she competed there. Still with all the boos she received there, she still showed herself every inch the beauty queen...regal and dignified!

Virginia was the total pageant patty that I just hate to see in pageants. Lu was always poised and showed more grace under pressure than anybody else in that pageant. Also, next to Kenya, Pat looked so small....Lu Parker won fair and square.

@19911996 actually it happened twice in the 80s. In 1982, Arkansas had Terri Utley (USA) and Elizabeth Ward (Miss America]. The next year California had Julie Hayek [USA] and Debbie Maffett [Miss America].

And you see how she did at Miss Universe. Lu was outclassed by the other delegates and made top 6 due to the sash factor. Miss Virginia also won Miss Photogenic, not South Carolina. South Carolina's face does not come anywhere near to Virginia's.

Listen to the answers to the final question. That is all you need to do to understand why. (Also, as much as I do like Virginia, she was bit short for pageants honestly and SC was prettier.)
Actually, Lu Parker swept the preliminaries in 1st place and won most of the competitions in this pageant. She had the highest score ever in Miss USA history in evening gown.

Kenya Summer Moore was booed in the 1993 MIss Universe pageant.
I love Lu Parker, she has a very classic beauty and she's so elegant.
I was so disappointed when Kenya was booed by the audience at Miss Universe in Mexico. I actually thought she was going to win that night, but the judges reversed course to avoid the spectacle of an American winner being booed during the crowning.

I cannot believe that I cannot find the Miss America 1994 Corwning Moment! This is the first year EVER that Miss USA and Miss America were BOTH from the same state...South Carolina!! We had signs on all NC/GA state borders with our pride! Still, why is there not a crowning moment of Miss America 1994, Kimberly Aiken? CRAZY!!
@robinquinc329 , this is one of those years that while I wouldn't be surprised if VA win, I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't either despite have the highest scores. VA may have the better the body, gave a better interview, but SC have the overall look and package. The fact that she won the gown portion didn't hurt and may gave her an advantage as the contestants were in their gowns when the judges made their final votes. By then, the judges may have forgotten any prior impact VA had made.
Pat Southall went on to marry Martin Lawrence. After their split, she met and later married Dallas Cowboys HOF running back Emmitt Smith. Not bad for a runner - up.

How do we know that race didn't have anything to do with her not winning? Evening gown scores don't have anything to do with the final outcome. At Miss Universe 1994, Miss Colombia had the highest score in the history of the pageant in evening gown and she was named first runner up. So, you cannot say it was b/c of her gown score. But it is what it is.
Lu Parker had the highest score in evening gown in Miss USA history! During the final look in the top 3, they wore their evening gowns…the one that Lu Parker won hands down.

It means that Lu Parker winning had nothing to do with race! Everyone has their favorites and Miss Virginia and Miss SC were the top 2 from the beginning! The judges picked Miss SC in a spontaneous moment at the end just like they pick every other Miss USA including Kenya Moore that crowned her Miss USA! Just 2 years before Kenya Moore, they crowned Carol Gist!!! I’m from SC so I was rooting for Miss SC but opinions are like A holes…everybody has got one including the judges and they picked Lu Parker! Nuff said!

That's not true. Being a Virginian, I was rooting for Pat up until the final question. She answered it as if Tonya Harding had already been tried and found guilty.
Lu truly gave the best answer for the final question because it was based in the fundamental principle of the American justice system- that being innocent until PROVEN guilty.
Agreed. People who claim that the Miss Universe organization had a vendetta against Pat just need to listen to the final answers more closely and see why SC won.
And swimsuit wise, Pat would have blown it out of the water. Lu placed in the top 6 at Miss Universe because of the USA sash. There were way other contestants who were more deserving of being in the top 6 and the top 10 than Lu Parker.
Lu faded in my opinion when she got to Miss Universe. I feel her all around packaging and performance was much better @ USA than Universe.

@robinquinc329 , in 1993, everybody thought Georgia was going to win, even the commentators seem to think she was going to win. 1994 seem almost like a backlash to that upset victory. I swear, after Miss Virginia's near identical semi-finals interview to Georgia's in 1993, I knew this was going to happen again.
@sholloway84 How was Virginia's answer negative? And her gown was not outstanding? A lot of Miss USA winners have won in gowns that were less than outstanding. Oh well. It is what it is. It was 17 years ago and I have gotten over it.
Sorry folks this is a beauty pageant..........any top modeling agent will tell you Miss Va. lack the cheek bones, teeth alignment, chin, height compared to Miss So Carolina. Not being mean here, just a fact and this IS a beauty pageant, forget the interview portion, one can be prepped/coached on that. One can not trade in facial-bone features..in 2 months preparing for Miss Universe.

@PungiFungi Still somewhat shocked as Pat gave a much better answer to the final question that Lu did. And again in 1993, Kenya gave a much better answer than Georgia did. In fact, for me Georgia lost it on the final question. She was shaky and nervous and seemed unsure of herself, whereas, Kenya answered without even stopping to think it over. She showed sincerity and poise, compared to Georgia's nervousness.
