Honestly, after seeing that blank, I thought it was going to look like... um... crap. But nope, I was shocked at just how beautiful it turned out! The top, which looked like cones trapped in ice, melting its way down the lamp to spring. Absolutely gorgeous!
Although I will say it looked far better on its own as a vase than it did mounted on wood with LED's inside of it.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  3 роки тому +1

The outsides of blanks can be really deceiving, it's what's inside that counts 😀 I was really tempted to switch gears and just make that into a vase, but I really wanted to see the original project idea through to the end. Overall, I'm really happy with the lamp, but I am definitely making a vase sometime down the road

Thanks Phillip! Well, overall it wasn't too difficult to make this one. The hardest part was the deep hollowing, and I set myself up as best I could with the steady rest and stabilizer, and I just took my time and kept my fingers crossed 🤞 😉

We had a sled like that in “Wood Shop” back in the 70’s - it just a cross cut sled with “V” blocks. The idea of cutting off slices is a great idea - will steal that one from you. It’s cool to hear you talk about a project on the pod cast and then get to see the video - keep that in mind for future pod casts and projects. Interesting how you drilled, then ‘smoothed out” a section at a time- nice technique. The finishing technique is awesome - looks great!!. Your color choices and placements is great - looks like tree tops at the bottom followed by snow and then a cloudy sky. The purple is just a nice addition. Great tips in this video. All in all - bang up job - came out fantastic

Great video Zac. You have given me some very good ideas on how to do some of my own projects. I'm in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. I have almost finished making something very similar to this, but with a lid, as an urn for a friend's father's ashes. I don't have any fancy hollowing system, so I cheated and hollowed from both ends, and then made a jarrah base and recessed the body of the hollow form into the base. I got the brass threaded inserts for the lid sent to me by Carl Jacobsen in the States. Coating the inside with clear resin is definitely much easier done as you said by just dumping some in there and turning / working in your hands, and then pouring out any excess. There's a couple of minor imperfections in mine that I'm going to sand out and then re-coat, but if it comes out looking anywhere near as good as yours, I'll be very happy.

Thank you. I poured it all at once using Alumilite Clear Slow, and I did stabilize the pinecones. Merry Christmas to you too 😀🎅🏻

great looking finished product! I like how the light shines thru.
it looks like it'd be easy to accidentally knock over, tho.
if you drilled a few holes around the opening of the base and the bottom of the lamp, plugged the holes in the base with dowels that extend an inch or so, and then sat the lamp on top of that, do you think that would make it more stable without detracting from the overall finish? or do you think the dowels would be visible through the resin when the light is on?

That's a good idea, definitely couldn't hurt. It's pretty stable as it is though, and we placed it where you won't accidentally hit it. So, I don't think I'll change it, but I'll keep it in mind for next time

Awesome Zac! You are an inspiration for a newbie resin turner. Is that rotisserie motor connected to the outboard side of the headstock?

Thanks Craig, I hope you give something like this a try. Yep, the motor is hooked to the handwheel on the other side of the headstock. I'm putting a video together showing the setup soon, keep your eyes peeled 😀

Zac this is an amazing piece. When I saw the shape I thought you had made a vase but it looks good as a lamp too. Almost makes one wonder if you misjudged the depth when hollowing and changed course to save the project.🤔 Either way its awesome.

Thanks RB. This was intended to be a lamp with a through hole from the start, but it sure would be a great way to salvage a mess up too 😉

Love this piece. I noticed the mold you used was PVC pipe. What was the piece on the bottom of the mold with hose clamp? Looked like a rubber cap. Where do you get those? Thanks

You can avoid the sagging in your absence by leaving the item on an electric bbq motor. ✌

That's exactly what I did, but I think I set the timer for the wrong amount of time

im off subject of this video, but i got a problem. i used 1 of those silicone cake pans for my 2nd pour ever. it leaked some from the seam. it was the same pan you used in a prior video. my real problem though is the glass bottom is stuck like chuck. any suggestions? thanks Fresh Air Woodshop -Kansas

That's a total bummer! I had one leak on me too, they can be hit or miss. I never had an issue with the resin sticking to the glass, I'm not sure what you can do other than try to wedge a putty knife or something in there to pop it off

@@ZacHiggins i put it in the freezer. i took my thinnest putty knife to it. it was pretty intense. i felt like the glass was going to shatter at any moment, but i prevailed! i do think freezing it helped. next time ill test the pan to see if it hold water, if not maybe ill silicone the seam where silicone meets glass.? thanks for the reply!

Beautiful piece. The music is distractingly loud.

The form is lovely but I can't watch till the end as the music is driving me mad. I'll skip to the end but won't like and subscribe because of the music.
