Hello Verde Beach! Your listening to The Daily Fire Starter, and I’m Andrew Hamilton! In top news, the city government has given the ok to revamp the island airport of verde beach! This would aid in more planes and better tourism. In minor news, a new movement for native Americans in the state of superior has taken storm in most cities, calling for new rights and better towns. You’ve been listening to the Daily Fire Starter, and I’m Andrew Hamilton. I’ll talk to you in the comments! Have a good day!
"Here, on the shores of Verde Beach, mighty flocks of airplanes gather, hundreds, if not thousands strong. Their impressive numbers can be seen crowded on the ground just as easily as circling the sky above. It is truly, one of natures greatest events." I've watched almost everything Sir David as done, except his TV shows from the 60s...
Phil, thanks for the laughs! The planes moving away was already funny but the moment I saw that air traffic above the airport I lost it. I actually laughed out so loud my neighbor came over to see what was so funny!
Your subway system to the terminals should have an air gap from the city system to an airport system. Two terminals in the main terminal, one feeding in from the city where people would arrive, get ticketing check bags, go through security etc, the second to connect all the terminals
Presumably each terminal has redundant facilities. I know what you're thinking of, airports that have their own internal rail/underground systems connecting terminals, separate from the city public transport - but I've also been to airports (e.g. Tokyo Narita) with each terminal linked directly to the city rail network.... you take a different stop depending on which terminal your airline operates from.
Рік тому+4
Here in Frankfurt, Germany, there is a monorail connecting the terminals. It has separated carriages for the public and for passengers that already went through security.
DC's two airports also have this situation (though DCA does not currently have an internal train/tram system - it's too small). Definitely needs to be an airgap to separate air-side from land-side.
Eh. Sfo has bart going straight into the terminal, and security is inside. Phoenix sky harbor has it's skytrain system and each terminal has its own security. It's really not uncommon for airports to have transit to the terminals and then you go through security as opposed to the other way around.
In regards to the landscaping… Orlando has plenty! Yes there are birds but usually it’s what you want to see upon arrival as you said. Also, that open field in the middle of the airport may be an opportunity for a water feature for the time being. Less landscape but still visually appealing.
Just connect the "islands". your initial concept of the island was to allow flow to both runways; now that it is gone you should connect them and allow some more visual continuity :)
I was thinking either that or put some non functional taxiways. It's possible to flip the direction of the taxiways so they don't allow crossing between runways
One thing that could be cool in the "field" area between the terminals would be to take some inspiration from HNL airport. They have a large outdoor botanical area with foliage from different regions with paths and rest areas. You'd have to connect the two terminals to make it make sense, and the paths/park wouldn't be functional but it could be a really interesting project. Great build as always!
Not gonna lie, that intro made me scroll down to the description and comment section to check if there was an issue with your microphone recording before realizing that you were mimicking what a pilot's mic would sound like so good one CPP. Also the flock of planes was definitely a sight to behold.
Somehow filling in that large area in the center of the airport would be nice. Of the top of my head Honolulu and Seoul airports may provide some inspiration of how it can be done. That or relocating a corporate complex with a control tower might be a nice addition and add additional realism - something like what Orlando Intl. does.
This is the one time where on a vanilla build I wouldn’t begrudge introducing move it for literally one episode. How you have the patience for this is mind blowing.
@JLA Those flocks in temperate areas are often starlings, then they are called a murmuration of starlings. I don't know if/which tropical flocking birds also do murmurations. Blackbirds are more solitary, just one couple plus their chicks per territory; which is why they sing so beautifully, to mark out their territory.
The plane jamming is from a lack of queuing space. When you reversed the loop direction, planes now have a lot of taxiway to queue on while they wait for their aircraft stand to open, meaning they block fewer gates when they need to queue. In the original config they would back out onto the runway, which stopped takeoffs, which led to deadlock.
My brother just bought the airports dlc for me for Christmas. I tried it out for the first time yesterday and let’s just say I need more practice! This video will help so much. Thank you for being amazing once again.
Hey city planner. I saw a video and I tried it out in my last airport and it looks amazing. It used the plain walking paths to fill in those gaps in the concrete and it looks really nice. It is a way to make your airport look much better!
Love the video phil! But i think the lest side of the airport should go counterclockwise in order to avoid crossing as the runway goes in the other direction
Really great redo! I remember the hype that exploded around the Airport DLC, and I thoroughly enjoyed watching you build this the first time. Back then -- wow, it's actually been a long time -- I thought, "I wonder how this elaborate airport will age?" ... And here we are! The efficiency-minded approach this time around, as opposed to the original 'this is shiny, let's see what we can do' approach, obviously has fewer palm trees 😢 but is very aesthetically pleasing in its own clean way! Another great installment, as always!!
I'd cut back 1 palm at least from the ATC tower. Other than that, splendid! You have NO idea how much the old concourse's 5 degree tilt tilted me. Thank you for fixing it!
I love Verde Beach! When life got crazy, I wasn't able to keep up with Bluffside Crossing, Clearwater County, or Nicolet Bay, but I make sure to never miss an episode of VB
Ahh, I remember the day when I was a wee lad when all the planes in the airport took flight at once and did a beautiful dance in the sky. The noise was horrendous! It went on for days. What a magical time it was.
I think the problem you're having with usage of the planes comes down to simple maths. You have around 24 stands that will each hold 100 people. You're trains, metros and cars can only supply so many people to the area. Attractiveness brings people in yes, but it can only do so much when you have capacity for 24,000 people on each turn. Especially since, DLC behaving, only 2 planes can land at any one time, including cargo. I love this build, it's beautiful and I've seen how much work has gone into it. But I think you've done the thing you always warn against - over building. You don't yet have the draw for 24,000 people so each plane is going to be 75% empty. Realistically a plane will fly at that capacity once or twice, but the airport would cut the flight entirely since it wouldn't pay for fueling and wages. This happens a lot where I am. Every mode of transport should be treated the same, you add buses or reroute lines when they are underproducing, the same should apply for airports. Realistically this airport has gone bankrupt because no one will continue to invest in a three terminal cargo and passenger airport with only 1,400 passengers. You only need 14 planes. Again I love this build, but this has stood out to me since I watched the original build when I was binge watching Verde Beach.
Fair point! I'm going to do a bit of playing around with this off camera to see how removing aircraft stands impacts utilization. I can't believe I didn't think about this in the way that you did!
Verde Beach International Airport! Good job, CP! I made a whole metropolis centered around Mt. Fuji, Tokyo called MetroTokyo in SimCity 3000, many years ago. All amenities, unique buildings, and rewards added. Budget in surplus and happy citizens. 👍😎
Only correction would be to relocate the hangars and parked planes closer to the cargo area since they're never near the passenger terminals IRL. Also, just a suggestion, but ditching the center large concourse and just having a concourse connect to the main terminal building would probably open up a lot of space for more small or medium plane stands since I think no airport planner would spend money on reclaiming all that landmass and not cram as many planes as possible.
If you can do it without completely breaking the game, I would add stands where there are parked aircraft in the middle concourse, and do the same with the landslide concourse where the empty grass area is. This would mean building a taxiway from one side to the other which is my only concern.
Happy new year Phil! You probably haven't made it over the date line but I have! I started watching your stuff early 2022 and will continue well into the future. Thanks for all the wisdom, entertainment and inspiration as a city builder and a person. Great build and once again Happy New Year.
The taxiways on the rail/road side are going backwards heading to the stands. Planes pass the way out from the stand before getting to the taxiway into the stand. They need to go anti-clockwise. The other side is correct. Happy new year CPP. Thanks for all the content.
Im an aviation geek and airport/airplane nerd. Usually in a big airport they have a smaller control tower called a ramp tower which helps taxi planes in and out of the gates there the FAA tower controllers can’t see. Usually the ramp tower is run by the airline or the airport sometimes by the FAA but rarely. you have wasted space connect the satellite terminal to the main terminal. Even satellite terminals can be connected to main terminals with a concourse.
Another awesome instalment of Verde Beach 😁 And a great video to bring in the end of 2022. Thank you for all the great content and can't wait to see what you have installed for us in 2023 :) Hope you and your family have a good new year 😄🎉🎆
Great video and fix of Mulligan International! One of the reasons why the taxiways are not symmetrical is because the far (ocean) side runway is shorter than the near (city) side runway. This puts the shoreside exit further away and results in that odd jog that you do not get on the near (city) side exit.
As a former Airport Operation Specialist, the new Advisory Circular for airport planning now recommends taxiways not lead directly from terminal or ramp area to a runway as you discuss at 28:00. This is a runway incursion mitigation strategy. Also most airport will see more compact high density infrastructure in their planning, especially in confined land use spaces.
I think part of the issue for the right hand side runway was that the junction is directly where the plane spots start, so the planes have to stop on the corner - there's no where to allow for a queue. On the left hand side you force them to taxi down to the first plane spot, leaving space for the cargo planes to still travel to their hub, and space for 2-3 planes to queue for a spot.
Looks great! One minor thing, which you said you'd do months ago, but never got around to, was to remove the ferry depot, as it is obstructing the views from the high-end hotel.
These Cities Skylines Ideas came to me in a dream last night. - [ ] Homeless people mechanic - [ ] Modular stadiums-Olympic CCP to go with stadiums DLC? - [ ] Ocean Liners-connect a special port to a shipping line, place a ocean liner/cruise ship on it and every week or so it will bring thousands of passengers and their ticket income to your city-mechanic in a harbour DLC and new ships in a ccp (a cruise line could be made like an airline can be made in Airports DLC)?
You should make metro lines connecting different parts of the airport. Might not be practical, but my local international airport does it, so maybe it’d be cool
When you first built this I had been working about a week on perfecting my airport efficiency. I knew when you built this, although beautiful it wouldn't work in game, did find it's key to have taxi in longer and seperate for each stand, then taxi out isn't as important. Give room for each stand to park 2 planes without blocking another stands way. The whole 1 way only is rough. And that you'll have 1 stand with 20 flights then 3 with 0. Nice improvements.
A couple of things: 1) use paths to fake concrete 2) connect the terminals. Having the only access between them be a subway is a bit awkward. 3) the road connects are awkward and therefore causing traffic
Thanks as always, great video. Only small critisism is that there would NEVER be any trees in close proximity to the air traffic control tower that would impinge on sight lines to planes on taxi ways and runways.
28:00 I believe the second shorter runway’s taxiway loops should be going counterclockwise to decrease traffic crossing. You could also have the taxiways come in at diagonals to reduce the corners (like in the picture from Hong Kong’s airport)
Nicely done! One thing I would still change up though - on the long runway's taxiway you went by highway logic "straight, offramp, straight, onramp, straight", but on the short one you went "onramp, straight, offramp" instead, possibly clogging the taxiway up more. If you reversed the directions on the ramp loops there, you can make it look more in sync.
Pilot here, I'm not sure how the game would work, but realistically there would be more exits/entrances to the runway, for instance the little jets don't need as much space to take off and land as the jumbo jets. Realistically everything would be connected much more, but I understand it's just a game. Beautiful city, wonderful series, very interesting, keep it up!
Hey Phil. You should try using a one way system. That is, one side is for taking off whilst the other is for landing. My suggestion is for the runway facing the mountain to be for landing and the one heading out to sea to be for taking off. That way, planes enter on one side, drop off and pick up passengers, then proceed to the other for take off. I think it would work a lot more efficiently. Happy New Year!
Happy New Year CPP I found your channel only a few months ago but have since watched dozens of your videos. They're both fun to watch outright but also make good background podcasts while working or driving. I think sometimes we don't always share the some opinions on some topics but you're an excellent builder and content producer! Thank you for your efforts!
One thing you can do to mitigate airplane traffic is to subscribe to "Optimized Outside Connections" which reduces the number of large vehicles (trains, planes and ships) in your city by filling each vehicle more. It mainly applies to large vehicles going to and from outside connections, but it also affects cargo trains within your city.
My opinion in regards to the birds, is the whole airport is built in an area where seagulls would naturally fly. So even without vegetation around the airport there will be birds to worry about.
A while back, well before the airports DLC, I added a vehicle asset for the MCU SHIELD Quinjet as an airplane and something about it just caused these swarms of planes circling above the base game airports like vultures in the desert. It got to the point that I had to remove the asset, which made me a little sad as I’m a huge “Agents of SHIELD” fan.
I'm pretty sure you can fix the metro jank quite easily by turning those hubs. The reason they got all messed up is because you didn't respect the metro station when you replaced the hubs.
Hey Phil, I feel like you would save hours of your life by pressing the Enter key to say yes to dialogues. Whenever you go to delete a building and it requires confirmation just hit Enter to say yes!
Really enjoyed this episode Phil, seeing the flock of planes had me in stitches! Not a pilot, nor do I work at an airport, just someone who casually enjoys aviation - to my knowledge airports usually have the runways perpendicular to each other instead of parallel (and in some cases even intersecting!) so that when there are strong crosswinds they can just use the runway that is most in favor with the wind's direction. Definitely a non-issue in C:S, and probably not worth the effort of changing the layout of this airport, but something that might be cool to see if you have plans for a larger airport in Nicolet Bay!
You can build stands directly off of those triangular terminals. It won't match the airport you're copying, but it might be cool to put a small or medium stand on the flat sides of those terminals, maybe even just the back flat side. You can also rotate them so the subways are facing horizontally while keeping the terminal with the same look. As for taxiways, I say keep everything symmetrical but make all the taxiways counterclockwise on the other side. That way they don't overlap incoming planes
Hey Phil ✈ I think the road you added on 15:59 arround the fuel station is a potential safety problem. I believe the purpose of those Cargo buildings which are nearby is to filter outside traffic into the airport.
Hmm, looks like Healthrow in MSFS when there is an online event going on. Lots of airplanes running into each other while trying to taxi. LOL!!!! OMG, the lunacy just keeps going!!!!!
I think it would be a really cool addition/feature at the airport in the area you left open for future airport development, if you had something like a small circle with old commercial/warplanes...like a mini museum. Now obviously you wouldn't be able to physically get near them, but the idea being something people would look at while waiting to board/sitting at the terminal that's relevant to flight. Think of it as a way to landscape, without actually landscaping
I would've liked to see a more intelligent stand selection. When it spawns to land, the plan picks an available stand, instead of just flying to one that has five all queued up to go to it. I'm also so glad you managed to catch all those planes on camera because that sight is hilarious XD
David Attenborough voice: And here we see the wild aeroplanes in their natural habitat... These unique flying patterns are indicative of the aeroplanes' mating season; a unique dance in which to attract a mate.
I think: the airport has many aircraft stands for the size of the runway. Flights have been accumulating because due to the number of arrivals and departures, they need to travel a long way both to enter and leave the airport, the takeoff and landing time is great to cross the entire runway, this creates a looping. The low utilization seats is another prove of this excess. Decreasing the number of stands or the size of the track is the only solution

2) connect the terminals.
I believe that those palm trees next to the air craft control tower are blocking views or the radar sometimes...
28:00 I believe the second shorter runway’s taxiway loops should be going counterclockwise to decrease traffic crossing. You could also have the taxiways come in at diagonals to reduce the corners (like in the picture from Hong Kong’s airport)
That plane scene at the beginning topped the previous #1 funniest VB moment: multiple cruise liners crashing into the Hamilton Experience 🤣🤣🤣
I don't usually watch Verde Beach, but damn am I glad I clicked on this one
Really enjoyed the Verde Beach airshow, some amazing flying 🤣
One thing you can do to mitigate airplane traffic is to subscribe to "Optimized Outside Connections" which reduces the number of large vehicles (trains, planes and ships) in your city by filling each vehicle more. It mainly applies to large vehicles going to and from outside connections, but it also affects cargo trains within your city.
All those planes in the sky look like a school of wild planes, ready for migrating in winter times 🙂
My opinion in regards to the birds, is the whole airport is built in an area where seagulls would naturally fly. So even without vegetation around the airport there will be birds to worry about.
Bird Strike?
A while back, well before the airports DLC, I added a vehicle asset for the MCU SHIELD Quinjet as an airplane and something about it just caused these swarms of planes circling above the base game airports like vultures in the desert. It got to the point that I had to remove the asset, which made me a little sad as I’m a huge “Agents of SHIELD” fan.
I'm pretty sure you can fix the metro jank quite easily by turning those hubs. The reason they got all messed up is because you didn't respect the metro station when you replaced the hubs.
So good! Please remove the tall palm trees that are close to the control tower - they’ll need a good visual of aircraft activity 😉
I like the imperfection. Feels like it’s made in the real world.
nature is beautiful, seeing all those planes migrate
For the airport metro, you can rotate the modern terminals fully! Just turn them to make the angles of the tunnels better!
Hey Phil, I feel like you would save hours of your life by pressing the Enter key to say yes to dialogues. Whenever you go to delete a building and it requires confirmation just hit Enter to say yes!
Would love to see you play Airport CEO and see how you'd plan everything out. Love your builds!
2:50. What you have there is a flock of airliners. They're easily excitable and are prone to playing follow the leader. It's a beautiful sight.
Working at an airline currently, utilizing airport dedicated transit helps with ridership as you can connect downtown with other communities
2:40 feels like Porco Rosso, love it!
That may be the most clear pilot voice I have ever heard in my entire life
It's always a good day for a sky full of airplane confetti!
Loving the CPP/Let’s Game It Out collaboration on todays video
The part with Midwesterners and Palm Trees hit too hard lmao I'm dying right now
🌍 you spin me right round! 🏚️ Happy new year Phil!
OMG... the planes became birds! The funniest thing I have ever seen!
The mass plane exodus is one of the cooler things i've ever seen in this game.
A real Alfred Hitchcock moment at 2:37 lmao
16:00 you made a connection between your land-side road network and your air-side road network. This explains the increased traffic at the end.
Hmm, looks like Healthrow in MSFS when there is an online event going on. Lots of airplanes running into each other while trying to taxi. LOL!!!!
OMG, the lunacy just keeps going!!!!!
I think there is a future episode...
Called airport taxiway road hierarchy!
you can add some military aircraft at the center area between the two concourse or some helicopters, they are normal stuff at airports
✈️. My degree is in Aviation Management. Airport planning was the most enjoyable class I had.
At this point VB deserves a proper cargo port for ships that would reduce reliance on rail and air
I think, that near second (shorter) runway you should have counter-clockwise circulation - to avoid intersection of traffic.
The planes at the start of the video where migrating, the plane its a dangered species, its so beautiful when you see the migration by yourselfs
Happy New Year to you, Phil, hope 2023 is a great year for you. And loving your videos.
