The fact that you immediately recognize the original artist puts you several steps ahead of other reviewers.
Thank you for your great reaction to this Angelina Jordan performance. We know that she has done her job when she brings the reactors and her audiences to tears. It is obvious that you are someone who understands the technical and artistic aspects of vocal music. After 40+ years as a music educator and jazz musician, I would say to all young singers: Don’t try to sing like Angelina until you know how to do it, especially where she belts out in the high register. Take voice lessons and learn everything you can about vocal technique and artistic styling. If you try to do what she does before you know what you are doing, you could severely damage your voice and may never be able to sing again. Angelina has a gift that, comparatively, very few people in history have ever had. All of her physical vocal abilities and sense of musical style came with her at birth and because her family played music all the time as she was growing up. She is a force of nature. You can aspire to sing like her, but don’t push it. We would like to see and hear you on UA-cam someday!
This is one of my absolute favorite reactions to Angelinas version of "I put a spell on you". It is so genuine and joyous and you also pick up so many nuances that the wast majority of reactors miss, including recognizing the image of Jay Hawkins on the candle and appreciating the effort by Angelina to be a little "spooky" just like Jay was (NOT an easy thing to pull off when your'e nine years old and cute as a button...). And when you mention how Angelina have control of the room you are quite right. The piece of paper Angelina is writing on in the beginning is the arrangement for this song. She made a few changes and gave them to the band leader. But she phrased them as "wishes", because she is very humble, so that made him smile. BTW the older woman behind the curtain is Angelinas grandmother (so you were right about this being a personal video too). So thank you very much.

One of the very few reactor who recognizes the face in the candle she's holding at the start of the video.☺️ The Great Screamin Jay Hawkins. Angelina at a very young age has this special taste in music. She loves the old songs. Many of her influences are from 50's, 60's and 70's. And this one is a tribute to the father of shock rock. And dang it was like the perfect replica of one of the holy grail of music.

I noticed that as well. NO ONE seems to recognize Screamin Jay Hawkins evlen when they say they know the song (and I've only seen one video that mentions Nina simone as well).
Somebody put a spell on a 40 year old Burlesque singer and turned her into a 9 year old! That was outrageous. Thank you for sharing!

There is not much one can say but, Wow.Wow.Wow. not enough superlatives to describe what Angelina does in that performance. Yes she was just a mere 9 years of age when she blew everyone away with that performance. She made music history with that performance..
It is impossible for me to believe that a nine year old can possibly put this much emotion and heartfelt sincerity into such music. It means to me that just maybe she is an incarnate. She has not experienced anything in her young life which would enable her to sign this music with her young heart. Outstanding!
Angelina just sang this song so beautifully , she caught your attention that's for sure !! in disbelief people are watching this young lady sing this song .. is this her voice ?? YES IT IS . . i love that when she is finished with the song she goes back into being an innocent child like she didn't do anything special ! i just fell in love with Angelina during Norway's Got Talent . she started that singing Gloomy Sunday at 7 years old . she sang Summertime in the finals and WON at 8 years old . the rest is HISTORY ! What a beautiful young lady her parents are so proud ! i don't think there is a song that she can't sing .. she is starting to write her own music now .. that will be interesting to hear the songs that she wrote at her young age . I’ve listened to it a thousand times now, and it never gets old. Angelina sings with so much passion and intensity…. She almost always moves me to tears. She is a musical genius… a prodigy if you will. Her talent is otherworldly.
Angelina calls her fans her Angels. I've read she has over 125 different covers on line so you have a lot to go through. Maybe go to the beginning of her professional career when she was 7 at Norway's Got Talent singing Gloomy Sunday would a good start. There's so many to choose from. There are a few videos when she was younger than 7.

You've known and loved this song by Screamin' Jay Hawkins for a long time, so you can appreciate her artistic choice. She kept the original spirit of the song, raw and spooky, and added her personal touch by making it more melodic. Somehow, it's even more fierce than the original. I've listened to other covers of this song and they are more love songs than throwaway spells. One of the things I love about this young girl, it's her deep respect for the songs and those who sang them before her.

I've realized lately that I've actually been rediscovering Angelina when viewing her older videos (Norway's Got Talent days). I remember seeing her back then (2014) on a Norwegian talk show and The View after she won and seeing this video a few years later. I remember thinking I've got to keep an eye on this one. She's going to be a huge star! Then 'life' happened and I lost touch. Saw a trending video in January about a girl singing Bohemian Rhapsody on AGT and had to watch. I've been hooked every day since. Your reaction is/was the same as mine (and many others). I now have to watch at least a half dozen Angelina videos a day. I HAVE to! Lol! My soul now requires it. Its awesome you know the original of this song so you can compare it and see how she made it her own, with still honoring the original. She truly is the new Queen of Jazz. IMHO. And you will truly enjoy the journey. Most of her jazzier songs are earlier (ages 6-9), then she really gets into a variety of songs. You mentioned Amy Winehouse. A common comparison. Along with Adele and Lana Del Ray. She does a couple of all their songs so check those out. You will always be amazed!! She has also written 3 songs before she was 12. Just a few days ago, Angelina and her uncle / manager signed a recording contract with the old and well-established Republic Records! The same company that signed Winehouse and Taylor Swift. Angelina will be seizing the music world by the throat (or more likely, the heartstrings!) in the near future with a record release! Elvis may have left the building long ago, but Angelina just "bought" the building -- and it's hers!

This young lady is gifted by God, she not only sings, she composes, arranges her songs, writes music and has written a book, fat too much for me to mention here!!!! She also covered Are You Lonesome Tonight - Elvis Presley,, I think he would be in tears hearing her sing one of his big hits!!! She makes singing seem easy and of no effort!! Yes, she handed the band director her arrangement of the song. My life has been enriched hearing Angelina!!
Although Angelina has so many great covers, this is my favorite to see people react to. Both of your reactions were so heartfelt and genuine. I can't count the number of reactions I've watched people do of this song, and every time I end up wiping tears away. (I blame it on my age) I'm a new subscriber, and I can't wait to share your journey, discovering this talented young lady. As others have said she was 9 for this, although it wasn't uploaded until much later when she was 10. Congratulations, you are only the third reactor, out of hundreds, that recognized Screamin Jay Hawkins (the original artist) on the candle she was holding at the beginning. Other things shown at the beginning that most people don't get include her handing papers to the conductor which is her arrangement for the song. If you play for Angelina, you better be ready to change things up at the last minute. She was doing her own arrangements since she was in NGT (7 yo) & probably before that. That's mind blowing! The other thing is they show her taking her shoes off & that is a great story that others can tell in detail, but basically in her travels with her family around the world, she saw a lot of children in poverty without shoes. This impacted her so much when she was 6 that she made a pledge to herself that she will always sing in public barefoot, to point out there are children in the world that need help. She has stuck to that for 8 years, so far, & the only time she sings with shoes on is in rehearsals. Many reactors cut the first part out because they think it means nothing, but Angelina doesn't do anything for nothing. I just thought you might like to know the inside story. As far as reactions go, you have to do her finals AGT-C performance of Elton John's Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. She absolutely killed it. For shear beauty, I love her cover of Adele's A Million Years Ago she did at 12. Welcome to the World of Angelina Jordan, she calls her fans "Angels" in case you consider yourself one.

@@tuputii4813 Yes, it's a music video & that's usually how they are made, different parts of the video are from different takes. However, most of Angelina's videos are 1 & done, with occasionally a 2nd take when the accompanist messes up.

Btw, the 14 bars long middle part without breathing and it's ending: wondering if she composed that herself. I really love it, playing myself right now.

First time I've heard Angelina singing I’m sure that someone has put AJV (Angelina Jordan Voice) “drug” into my ear and I am addicted ever since. And even though it’s not curable I hope she will remain my “drug” supplier until the rest of my life.
Whatever Angelina sings (I hope I have heard everything) it’s so full of her soul and her voice is just so beautiful, now if I miss one day (which is almost never) without listening her songs it’s a lost day for me.

9 years 2 months old when this was made. She did the arrangement and composition with only a little help from the producer and her dad. The paper in the beginner she was writing is basically her “Wishlist” of changes to be made to the song lol. When the band came in for this they thought it was a joke until she started singing

OOH yes, my Angelina never lets me down, Angelina effect at its best, and it works everytime but your reaction with tears just lets you know she doesn't just sings, all of the feelings and real meaning of the song are loaded into her unique voice and that pierces your soul and that is the reason of your crying reaction and on top of that, this song means a lot to you and to hear it from a 9 year old with that perfection in every sound and the respectful rendition that she does not only in this song but a hundred other songs, she has become the best representation of what artists wanted to pour out there with their compositions and I bet that if all of them watched what she does they'd be more than pleased that someone finally gets it and that's Angelina.
Yeah, while I have had my mind blown over and over listening to Angelina, nothing compares to this. It is believed that she is 9 in this video, and she is in complete control of this fantastic studio production. Notice her hand movements that direct the band. Done in black and white to honor the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins (the composer) production (mid 50's I believe). This video has well over 6M views on UA-cam, and while I loved your reaction, it is pretty typical; I have yet to see a reactor that wasn't blown away when they first see and hear it. This is my first time seeing you react to Angelina, so I'm not sure what you have done so far. Yozhik has listed some that he would like to see you do, and I love all of them. Okay she's 2 for 2 in the crying game but you better be ready to shed more tears if you're planning more Angelina reactions. For me this is what separates hers from other 'pretty' voices. Using an example from my era, Karen Carpenter had a perfect raspy contralto tone in my opinion but it only really made me tear-up after she died. Behind the scenes her life wasn't great, which perhaps helped her convey some of the loss and heartache in the lyrics she often sang. Her singing was sweet and touching but was it making me cry? I'm a guy, so nah, no way! Angelina Jordan was 7 when she sang 'I'm a Fool to Want You' and 'Gloomy Sunday' on Norway's Got Talent and had her 8th birthday by the time she sang 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)', which had me sobbing like a lost child. Yet, as far as I can tell, the only loss she had ever suffered was a pair of shoes, which it was her choice to give away. So 'I Put a Spell on You' was too appropriate a song to then record for it to be coincidence. She made some pretty spooky gestures in this video and up until here and beyond, nobody saw her in anything but white; the white of a White Witch - a White Witch capable of issuing commands via subliminal harmonics. She's done it to me, you and probably thousands of others over and over . . . even her When You're Smiling video broke me. Continue to listen with caution (and tissues).
I know it's been several months since your comment, but I want to tell you that I recognized myself in your journey in the footsteps of this rare and unique singer. So much apart from the crowd of singers we hear today. The first time I saw her was her rendition of "I am a fool to want you" a cappella. And yes, like you, I immediately thought of a little witch in a white dress. When she started to sing with the gravity of an adult well beyond her age and her eyes full of melancholy, I was done. I didn't remember the last time I was so mesmerized by a singer. Then it was Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down) sung with such dignity and restraint. A moment of pure beauty. Since then, she put a spell on me and I'm glad. Someone would have told me that one day my favorite singer would be a kid, I wouldn't have believed it. But it's a fact.
@@florencethibault341 Even as a fan I would initially scoff at the idea that Angelina, then a pre-teen, could have the best voice out there but I honestly struggled to think of anyone I would rather listen to - certainly amongst active singers. Physiology alone dictates she has more refined tools at her disposal now but I rather lament that she has veered towards the contemporary, both for selfish reasons and because the younger audience she'll attract lacks the attention span for her sustained commercial success (if, indeed, that is a goal).
As a child she was so far ahead of the curve that her notoriety, once she exposed her talent, was a given. So it's to her credit that newcomers seem equally mesmerised by the 14/15-year-old whose talent, while immense, is no longer freakish. It now comes down to her style, whereas before she had no right to have a style!
I'm not sure if the raw, brave and self-effacing glimpses of Angelina are a thing of the past; she may not be self-conscious but her paymasters will be on her behalf and may veto grandma's exposés. I only hope Republic have a more convincing plan for her than has been apparent so far.
@@alanoakley3242 You are right, as a kid she was more free, more fearless, she didn't have to care much about what people think. She could sing what she really liked, her exceptional talent for her age allowed her to. To see and hear her sing songs so far from her chronological age was both strange and appealing. Now she will be judged for her talent alone.
She is no longer the cute little girl but a tall young beauty who has to adapt like any other teenager to her new body. As a teenager, she is probably more sensitive to the opinions of others. We can think that her voice has changed too and that she had to adapt.
I understand your concerns about which style she will prioritize, her future song choices or what Republic has in their plans for her, I share them in part. But this young girl seems to have a lot of determination and a clear idea of who she is and what she wants. The only unknown for me is the part that was her own tastes and the part to please her grandmother in her song choices in the past. But I'm sure her jazz background will always be there.
Even with the constraint of singing what she thought would appeal to the AGT audience, her "Bohemian Rhapsody" was jazz influenced and with her more formal "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", which I think wasn't really her choice, at the end she improvised the cry of an owl in a jazzy form. Like a cry of liberation from her true self.
After AGT she was very discreet, less active. Maybe to protect her grandmother, her Pygmalion, of the risk to catch Covi-19. She has already lost her two grandfathers in the last three years, the fear must be very present. So little clue of what's to come.
We have to wait and see. But I have confidence for the best.

Also I would feel safe in saying that the love we feel for this little angel is endless. I react like that with almost all her songs. Never have I had that much of an emotional reaction to anyone before Angelina, and I’m 68.
Listen to her rendition of “How Great Thou Art” I turned my back on the church 60 years ago for a variety of reasons and every time I saw her video of this hymn I never listened to it. About two weeks ago I thought what the hell I decided to play it and I played it at least six times and I had to stop as I was in tears. No song /hymn has touched me as her rendition did. It brought back fond memories of me singing it as a boy soprano in the church choir and this might sound strange but it is my favourite video of hers..it is the last thing I hear every night before heading to bed I sleep like a baby.
