Back in 1963, I saw Irene Ryan perform live. She was in Sacramento doing a benefit performance for the Catholic sisters. First she did her "granny bit" (funny & on spot), then she shucked off her granny outfit & proceeded to do a very tasteful & highly enjoyable cabaret act. She was a strikingly attractive woman in a blue sequined outfit, and as kind/gracious as could be. She could sing/joke/dance. I remember that very fondly.

The man was asked about his profession and the woman was asked about her family AS IT SHOULD BE. Nowadays, women are expected to have professions and NO children and men are expected to amount to exactly what society has left for them. Nothing.

Good manners? Ludden treated Irene Ryan with some disdain. “You’re pretty smart, Granny.” Like she needed to be told that. Of course she was smart. Bob Crane was his usual self-absorbed, boorish self. Used lots of “humor” to conceal his male insecurities. And yes, Crane stood to greet the woman, but when no one was looking, he did some sex-crazed stuff with his “willing” female victims.

....plus also allowing her scooping gesture to suggest 'gravy'. They enforced word rules quite strictly, but were lax about gesturing. But also, in the lightning round the rules are a bit different and the prompting player could say a number of disparate words quickly. "A lot of them" should have been flagged, but you know.... celebrities and keeping it fast and fun.
Watch "Password" episodes with Peter Lawton to see how far the rules could bend. Great player, but he crossed the line quite a bit (as did quite a number of his partners).
