    I boarded a DC9 in San Diego bound for L.A. a few years back. My seat mate was a middle aged man who kept looking nervously out the window, so I asked, "Is this your first time on a plane?" He replied, "No. I'm an FAA inspector." Not sure I've ever been totally comfortable on a plance since.

    A friend of my sister's was a flight attendant. During one of her safety presentations her co-flight attendants played a practical joke on her. Instead of the dummy life vest they gave her a real life vest, with a live CO2 cartridge. So when she yanked on the line that is usually disarmed, the life vest inflated completely within seconds, almost smothering her. But she played along, and continued the whole demonstration as if nothing had happened.

    On the fast talking ATC:
    They do that to speed up comms and bring up efficiency. The same reason prevents them (at least the good ones) from repeating an instruction with the same speed. Because if a pilot didn't get it the first time, they're not gonna get it the second time if you don't change anything. So most ATC will slow down, enounciate better and use standard phraseology more stringently, when you ask for clarification. (It helps if you do it in a foreign accent ;)).

      Even LAX can operate efficiently without giving directions like an auctioneer. I’ve had smaller regional airports speak at 150 mph like they’ve got something to prove. It’s super annoying. Even when ATC records the ATIS msg’s a lot of times they fly through them. It just means we have to listen to them three times instead of once, which is much less safe.

    When I used to fly a lot, Southwest crews seemed to be the friendliest, and the most likely to joke with passengers, even over the PA. I assume it's something the company emphasizes in their training, and they probably have a roster of good jokes and banter they go through regularly. I think I remember hearing the same jokes a couple of times, but I couldn't tell if it was some of the same crew I'd had before.

    Regarding the fast talking clearance delivery there's an old story about Pete Campbell, long time safety director at the FAA. He was preparing to make a flight and the clearance came at him at light speed. Pete who spoke in a heavy southern drawl came back at the controller and asked him, "Is any of that stuff you just said important?" The controller responded that of course it was important, it was his clearance. So Pete said "Well then, why don't you say it like it's important!"

      @@jaronhodgson9120 TBH I flew the plane (a 767-400) for a few minutes when I was 12, again at 23, and the most recent one was 10 years ago (wow that long already...) Obviously at cruising altitude, but with teh autopilot off. I wasn't allowed to touch anything but the yoke - I was allowed to manoever in my ceiling only. It was fun but I was also fully aware that the plane was loaded up with passengers, so there was a real sense of heavy responsibility.
      I had informally "trained" on Dash 6, 7, and 8 simulators at FlightSafety after hours where my dad worked after leaving the airlines. As an 8 year old to about 12-13 , I got pretty good at flying and even landed them with minimal damage (I never quite mastered the flare, and I was predisposed to flat landings with a fair bit of hop) but I got good at landing and stopping on the runway towards the end (I was about 13). My dad may have one of the printout reports still, I'd have to ask him.
      The Dash 7 was my favourite - sometimes my dad would trip me up with some kind of failure, or engine fires (I had to pull the red cut off lever above my head - I remember having to take my belt off to reach it!) and then bring the plane down in that state.
      Sometimes I think that I should have become a pilot, because I don't like flying as a passenger ;)

I'm glad I got to take a look at the 747-400 cockpit before BA retired theirs. Even got a cheesy photo of it. Most of the time the pilots seem super-friendly and talk to me about whatever I ask them. Yeah when Kelsey was talking about curious kids I was thinking. “Yeah I’ve been alive for almost four decades and I’d do the exact same thing.” In my defence though, my parents who fly regularly even today still deliberately choose the seats right the way up the front of me aircraft to exploit the fact the pilots are human and either need a bathroom break or either go get food or have it brought to them. And when that door opens for a few brief moments they can look through and see the flight deck so I’ve clearly inherited a strong sense of curiosity.

As an aviation geek I would get shown the cockpit an awful lot and ask to see the christmas tree (not sure if thats actually slang or made up). The most memorable flight of my childhood was once I got to sit at the back of the cockpit of an Oman AIr ATR-42 landing at Muscat airport on the condition I stayed quiet. 11 year old me didnt say a word. Likewise, probably because I’ve been a cashier/checkout operator and knows how difficult people can be.
      But there’s another reason why people tend to behave if there’s a pilot around and that’s because we’ve all essentially been trained to respect and obey authority figures. Experiments have been done on it, like the ones on a train. The researcher dresses normally then approaches a normal person sitting in one of the seats of a half empty carriage and asks that person if they can sit in the seat that person is currently occupying.
      Most people clearly thought it was a bit of an odd request since there are plenty of others available but moved to a different seat anyway. I’d likely have been one of those as I’d conclude that it’s far less effort to move than either get into a conversation or argument with a complete stranger. But of course there were a few people that refused to move seats or did so after putting up a bit of resistance. And that was the same result of all the researchers on various different trains.
      But when the researchers repeated the experiments by doing the exact same thing only this time they asked the passengers to move while a uniformed police officer stood silently with or just behind the researcher. Every single passenger they asked moved without complaint or doubt.
      I even experienced it when I worked in a big supermarket chain. When I wasn’t wearing my uniform and the fire alarm went off and I told people to get out, most ignored me. But when it went off while I was in uniform and on duty, nobody questioned me. One or two were reluctant to leave their trolleys but they still moved.

    Hey Kelsey,
    I have been subscribed and watching for a handful of months now. I really enjoy watching your videos. I work in the industry, on the production level, and based on a few of your videos I believe you currently do as well on the same product line...
    The part that made me want to say something on this video was where you were talking about the pilots greeting the passengers, personally I have always really liked that personal interaction. I liked to see who was flying the plane when I was younger, but now as a dad who works as an engineer in the aerospace industry, i like the kid/pilot interaction. There was a flight a year or 2 ish ago where the pilot greeted the fam on the way in, we were towards the end, but the pilot/co-pilot (I didn't look at stripes) asked if my kids (3 and 5 at the time) if they wanted to check out the flightdeck, both my kids panicked and said no, I thanked him and we went to our seats at the back of the plane. On the way back off, he remembered us and offered again. My kids were hesitate, but I said , I would love to see, I explained where I worked, what I did, and the kids warmed up a bit. We spent maybe 3-4 minutes chatting about what I worked on and what this aircraft was, but it made my day and made my kids excited to talk about and see parts of the plane they didn't normally see. I personally really appreciate that level of interaction with all of the flight crew!
    Keep up the good work! I enjoy your videos.
    Cheers

    "There's a massive pilot shortage right now" Has been the rhetoric of pilots in steady jobs for as long as I've been in aviation. It is simply not true, unless you have 1000-1500 hours or more. It is ludicrous.

    • @boass
      @boass 4 роки тому +4

      Arcticviper Those are US flight requirements. Here in Northern Europe you have an airline job within the first year of finishing flight school. The stats from most schools show 80-90 percent of students get a job 6-12 months after graduation.

    • @arcticviper252
      @arcticviper252 4 роки тому +1

      @@boass I hope you have toilet paper, because that comment needs cleaning.
      I was trained in Northern Europe, Denmark, to be specific. When I finished, the closest you could get to a flying related job, was an invitation to an interview as a part-time operations staff member. I sent out 100+ applications, most of them didn't even get a receipt confirmation.
      I work in general aviation now, after some 8 years away from flying with massive debt problems due to flightschool bankruptcy, having pre-paid and all that. (Never pay in advance, kids) I am thankful for my current job aituation, because while low-pay, at least I am flying now, even with the current crisis.
      Cite your source for the 80-90 % figure. It has been repeated again and again and again.
      Of the people, who were in the same flightschools as me at the same time, 2 of them quit flying all together without getting a flying job. 2 of them are unemployed, and most of the rest are in severely uncertain circumstances now, with crisis looming.

    • @arcticviper252
      @arcticviper252 4 роки тому

      To add: in my flightschool students reference frame, I still have some form of contact or updates from some 20-30 people on at least a semi regular basis.
      Call it 20, so yeah, over a 10 year period, 16 of them have jobs, which IS in fact 80% but most of them waited for approximately 3-5 years before their first actual flying job, and even now they are back at square one, or at least at risk of being there soon. That is not a good track record by any stretch of the imagination, so please stop encouraging naive young people by inferring it is easy to get a job. It isn't.

    • @boass
      @boass 4 роки тому +1

      Arcticviper Okay then my mistake. Maybe not all of Northern Europe but at least Iceland has high demand for pilots. I just assumed that it wasn’t too tough there either but I am clearly mistaken... At least for Icelandic carriers it was relatively easy to secure a position or at the very least a position over the summer then later transitioning into it full time. The three flight schools in Iceland all had similar stats. My mistake. :/

    • @boass
      @boass 4 роки тому

      Arcticviper I also had not factored in the current crisis nor the aftermaths of it. I was only citing Icelandic information which I thought our northern neighbors might share. There is also the fact that a bunch of Icelandic pilots search vigorously for jobs outside Iceland and the EU. However I didn’t specify any of this so it was right of you to correct me.
