Dad was a Limerick man. (Mom was from Roscommon.) Dad and his brothers were accomplished hurlers in the 1930’s when they were, like now, great national champions (fivepeat, bhoys!). Hanging on my wall is a hurley carved by an uncle way back then. A beautiful relic, the grain running true through the curve. It is like a piece of flexible steel. In our house, Mick Mackey and Christy Ring were as well-known as Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays. After Mass in Brooklyn of the 1960’s, we would head up to Gaelic Park in the Bronx for our junior hurling and Dad’s senior hurling team (St. Brendan’s). After a while, Dad relented and let us play easier sports like baseball and boxing and avoid that long, dreary ride up and back on the old Westside highway. The boxing lessons were taught to us by Dad and were very useful on the block where we were the only Irish. My teeth still grate if I ever hear the word “shanty.” Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all in Ireland and to all in our world-wide diaspora! As Mr. Yeats wrote, we are “Still the indomitable Irishry.”

'Twas on a dreary New Year's Eve
As the shades of night came down
A lorry load of volunteers
Approached a border town
There were men from Dublin and from Cork
Fermanagh and Tyrone
And the leader was a Limerick man
Sean South from Garryowen
And as they moved along the street
Up to the barracks door
They scorned the danger they might face
Their fate that lay in store
They were fighting for old Ireland
To claim their very own
And the foremost of that gallant band
Was South from Garryowen
But the sergeant spied their daring plan
He spied them through the door
The Sten guns and the rifles
A hail of death did pour
And when that awful night was passed
Two men lay as cold as stone
There was one from near the border
And one from Garryowen
No more he will hear the seagull's cry
Over the murmuring Shannon tide
For he fell beneath a northern sky
Brave Hanlon by his side
They have gone to join that gallant band
Of Plunkett, Pearse and Tone
A martyr for Old Ireland
Sean South from Garryowen
Sean south mush
