The Shrieking Birth of Assassin's Creed

- a series retrospective (subheading - da vinky code) [subsubheading - a very kbash video]
Assassin's Creed sure is something - I've gone from full-on fan to disconnected viewer watching with mild interest. The games are cool, but at the core, that's about it. They definitely have a place in gaming, but what's interesting is seeing how the series evolved. So here we take on the first four Assassin's Creed games - I, II, Brotherhood, and Revelations, or the Altair-Ezio collection.
Like this video if you want me to keep the series up - I have another one planned, but I'm not sure I can do the full run if it's not interesting to people. Also lemme know if I screamed too hard, really let loose this time. Thoughts and prayers for eardrums.

“Prince of Persia died for this!”
"Oh no Alitair, that is very haram"
I died
You didn't even mention how Revelations had the single best thing in the entire franchise: Ezio pretending to be a bard at at a high-class party, singing dirty tavern songs because they're the only songs he knows.
Actually he sings about the events of the previous games, and those in that game
@@pyroflame04 "Oh the beauties of Firenze
Can melt a heart, you see
Beware the girls of Roma
Lest fire you wish to pee."
Some of them were references to past exploits, but even then, they were phrased in a very 'low' manner. And some really were just outright bawdy.
♪ Young Cesare, I heard him say: "could not be killed by man"...
So I tossed him through the air to see where he might land. ♪
Because the best thing about the franchise isn't a reddit meme
Back in the day I was invested in the Desmond story because I thought they were building up to him becoming an assassin with his own game in modern times to finally take down the Templars, with some crazy twists and turns like Adam and Eve, or Ezio finding a message meant for Desmond in the future. Then Revelations acted as pure filler for his story, and AC3 resulted in an ending less satisfying than that of the Mass Effect trilogy.
Desmond's death was by far the saddest for me, because it completely cut my interest in the franchise. Now I'm stuck in AC1 to Revelations and I don't wanna come out.
@@DRAGON_NUTZ Black Flag, no strings attached, do it.
AC3 amounted to "BZZZZT!" Don't touch the electrical outlets! All that hype lead up to the biggest wet fart in gaming history, compounded by it actually releasing around 2012. Such a missed opportunity.
Even though later games would have one or two aspects that are pretty good, they'd always be dragged down by something else due to AC focusing on quantity over quality as far as features are concerned. If they went back and tried to remake 1 as a pure stealth assassin game, I think they could've done something more interesting than arkham/witcher 3 clones.
@@DRAGON_NUTZ Black Flag and Rogue were great pirate games, I highly recommend them on their own for the ship mechanics. 3 had a fun expansion where you became the predator, but the base game was kinda bland and tried to rip off the Arkham combat system. Unity, now that it's been patched to hell and back, stands out as having the deepest parkour system in the franchise, while also being reminiscent of the Arkham games in some mechanics. Syndicate has the River Thames and grappling hooks (meh). Origins and Odyssey are Witcher 3 knockoffs with microtransactions.
I don't mention the story because... well, generally I'm simply tired or sad at the end of them, especially with how the franchise has evolved plot-wise. KBash was right about these games (and Far Cry, tbh) not wanting you to feel good.
IMO AC3 was the death of Assassins Creed, remember being so impressed by AC1 and its attention to historical detail with a focus on stealth
I just realized that Altair to Ezio is kind of like Jonathan to Joseph Joestar, and it's very similar reasons why people liked the character changes so much
except the plot is becoming lamer and lamer
Assassin's creed is a jojo reference too confirmed
When are we getting a full version of Punch The Pope?

The "Hey Padre what are you doing" "Oh you know, just hanging around" was just perfect
Aaaah AC 1&2. The way enemies would politely wait for you to finish killing one of their friends before engaging. Classy men all round.
I just beat Black Flag and that never changes, lol
Jank aside, I still like the Ezio trilogy to this day. It has a charm that the later titles were/are lacking.
That said, I've always wanted Assassin's Creed to lean more towards hardcore stealth as opposed to action, the latter of which they leaned heavily into with AC Brotherhood and continued up to AC Rogue. Unity was the closest one to prioritizing stealth over combat, but the game was glitchy and clunky as hell.
Now with the new trilogy, they're just trying to build off of what The Witcher 3 did. It would be nice to see this franchise get its identity back.
Rest in Peace BANCO
I loved sneaking around playing these games 😅 Made me feel cool and cunning.
Imagine if class based games had an interesting sneak function for rogues. It'd probably make them op, but it's a thought.
The only reason I can think of for as to why they had the whole "linking via memory" story premise was they wanted some of the video gameyness to be diegetic. Like the starting over from death thing is just the memory getting synced better.
A lot of games at the time seemed to want to try and explain away video gamey details. Like they were trying to appeal to normes, and were embarrassed to be games.
Yeah, good point. The beginning of the 7th generation was full of these nods to reality.
I think this is from PoP really. resetting time was useful for a gamer and explained away in story by a magical relic. AC follows that trend pretty naturally although here it feels more like window dressing than a game mechanic.
I may be the only person alive who actually likes a lot desmond and present time participations in the games, lol
I feel like this is a great way to connect the player with the ancient history parts of the game, because we actually live in the present, so the past seems like fantasy for someone from the XXI century. And the plot twists envolving Desmond and the present time templars like the "ancient gods" talking to him, the map being shown to the templars, the message that Ezio will never understand, it's just genius.
I agree, the ending of 2 and then revelations blew my mind
Assassins creed was a favorite of me and my friend of 13 years. We would hang out as his house and I’d watch him play every assassins creed game. It’s one of my favorite franchises because of the memories I have of it and because I’m a history buff
KBash, you've been teasing them mic skills for a couple of videos now. You might as well hit us with the whole mix tape fam.
I feel like Haytham Kenway was the only sort of sympathetic Templar and that's just because you get to play as him and he gets way more backstory outside of AC3.
Shay Cormac was also pretty enjoyable.
That "Prince of Persia died for THIS?" comment REALLY hit me hard
If ac 4 is so good why isn't there an AC V
They forgot to add a v of course
Its been there all along. Just flip the logo upside down.
They stopped numbering the games because they are all pretty episodic after AC3
The next game is ACV.
@Light Revaan I believe you mean “the shit”
In the first one, youre not supossed to mash attack button, youre supoosed to counter and kill in one hit. Best game in the franchise.
Except you can’t counter kill in the beginning of the game
this is a good criticism of the game. Even though I do genuinely love the games - or more accurately I love the premise, and in particular the Ezio Trilogy and AC4 - the assessment made is pretty much completely fair.
I will say, though, that for all the jank I do think that where Assassin's Creed actually shines is in its narrative. It's why AC2 and AC4 are my personal favorites. The jank is real in both, but I genuinely love the narrative that's told through them.
"Can't renno because the shops are Templar territory? Well now I care! Because no one gets in the way, of BANCO!"

To me what saves Revelations is the amazing trailer/intro.
Still the most beautiful animation I've seen, gives me chills everytime with that song too.

*you know, just hanging around*
God damn it I laughed more than I should have
Great video, Altair character wise is the goat.
Days since Kbash said "Himbo" : 0
I didn't really like the first AC, but 2 was when I got properly into the series, Brotherhood is great. Revelations didn't really do anything for me, and 3 was just awful. Black Flag was cool, and the series after all just melded into one of those "Annual Ubisoft Tower Game" blobs for me.
3 had good ideas it just executed them poorly. 3 introduced the snappier parkour, boat combat, and animal hunting, its just connar is such a boring character and his story just kinda goes nowhere, the crafting was more useful but also the most tidious its ever been, and Desmond actually got some cool missions that really made me want a game set in the present. 3 wasn't awful it just tried to do a lot more than it should've and suffered from an unfocused design it's why blackflag and liberation before it are better than 3 itself 3 had good mechanics they were just unfortunately not used in the game well.
Rogue had an amazing story, Unity's Paris is amazing to explore but the story and characters are garbage, Syndicate improved EVERYTHING about Unity but fell into the Ubisoft trap, Origins was AMAZING (my favorite btw), and Odyssey improved on the game play and looks amazing but the characters were forgettable.
Revelations was fun and 3 was aight, 4 killed it for me when the last mission NEEDED you to upgrade your ship....
Was just tryna play some regular assassin’s creed
@@beastfulboy I REALLY like 4. Got a sweet spot for 3 as well
Why do people not like 3? I'm a third of the way through and it's been great
A lot of what I remember of Ass Creed 1 is assassination sidemission where I climbed a roof and threw daggers at people.
But maybe Assassins Creed is what planted the seed of really liking Art History. Which is a weird thing to learn when you've spent $20,000 in loan money and has nothing to do with what you've picked as a major.
Man I honestly always forget this is a relatively small channel. Love your content!
Dude you just went up on my list k bash. This is a great look and review for the series. Better then anyone has ever done. Can't wait for pt 2
AC1 is still my favorite. Are the info-gathering missions boring? Busywork? Yes, because being an assassin is not just about plunging stiff blades into quivering necks. There's clerical shit to do.
When you finally get to the target, it feels meaningful. Fuckin' love it.
Don't forget the confessions. My favorite part of AC1 was hearing the target spill their guts, and seeing the bits of truth in their reasoning.
@@DRAGON_NUTZ Now that you mention it, the fact that AC2's confessions were reduced to "HARRGH YOU'LL NEVER STOP US" was the primary thing that turned me off it.
You play a video game for fun, not cause "yass, real life is boring sometimes". I despise that argument
@@tudorciubotaru3497 It's more of a pacing argument than a realism one. If a horror movie is all gore and jump scares, then it's not letting them stand out from each other in the white noise. It's about build, crescendo, then release. Modern AC seems to just be all crescendo.
You are so underated. I love these videos more than other reviewers. Honestly just keep being you, its funny.
Regarding the "Prince of Persia died for this", I know it's said tongue in cheek, but I still feel it's worth pointing out that it only seems that way in retrospect. I guess most people know that AC started out as a spin-off of Prince of Persia during development, before taking on its own identity and that adds to this perception, but when AC released, PoP wasn't quite dead yet. There was that reboot in 2008 (a year after the original AC) simply titled Prince of Persia and Forgotten Sands in 2010. Plus, also in 2010, they released the live-action movie. I wanna point out, that was the same year that AC Brotherhood released.
I didn't play Forgotten Sands, but I did play PoP 08 a few years later, and I wasn't exactly a big fan of that one. I guess there were a lot more people like me, leading to the franchise getting axed.
For all the problems of the original AC, I remember every single assassination and it's target despite the fact I haven't played it in almost a decade, each one was meant to be a big deal, I don't remember the name of a single bad guy in Odyssey.
AC games lost their charm after Unity. Syndicate was too modern and the rpg style games just don't fit the assassin's creed theme.
Anyway, "Altair that is very haram" got me cracking lmao. Keep up the great work man👊
Unity was decent, had an ok enough story and competely standard gameplay, also the animations for Parkour and counters in unity are fucking great, still it came out looking like 5 month old fetus so it's understandable that nobody actually liked it.
@@siy202 yeah they more or less had it coming
The amount of creativeness in your videos is amazing man love them the OMEGA JANK ZONE made me laugh soo good
I did a playthrough once where I only fought with the hidden blade only in ac1. It was rough at times but fun.
Same here. Felt like a mega badass though.
However, I will admit that the combat system was somewhat handicapped by how easy the counter kill was.
I, too, got the collectors edition of AC2. Ezio hangs out on our landing, watching over our stairs. He’s a friend
Yo KBash I NEED the rest of Choke The Pope, gimme that fire!
I was never really into this series, but one time, I was watching a friend play AC2, and when he got to the "It's a-me" scene, I fucking died!
awesome video kbash! Ezio had the best arc (there's a reason for the ezio collection right?) hell, there is even an animated movie! to me the franchise should have stoped right after revelations buuuuuuuuuuut................can't wait for the part 2 now! :P
There is one thing that I cannot forgive Brotherhood for doing: Introducing optional objectives.
Fuck those things.
Loved this - definitely interested in seeing the rest if you have it in you.
To answer the prompt in the description, maybe a little too much screamy for me personally, but probably not enough to drive people away, so you do you.
I love the omega jank zone bit haha, keep up the great work!
My fitness goal is "60 years old? A minor inconvenience."
automatically had to like this video because i've been waiting for you to talk about this series!!!
I didn't know I was also waiting, but now I can't wait for a part 2.
The content I've been waiting for
I did a KBash marathon last night and then you release a new one video. Coincidence? I think not!
THANK YOU! I thought the same when I played them. 2 has the best story, but Brotherhood has the best gameplay and feel overall. I also enjoyed 3 (another unpopular opinion), but I agree it has too many imperfections and weird mechanics to name it "one of the best"
Thank you for covering the jank. It's very difficult to showcase in video because you automatically open yourself up to the "That's just in short clips" defense, but it's just *all the time.* I literally jank out in three different ways climbing the same building, and the erratic camera motion really doesn't help. I don't know how this didn't stay in my memory of these games
As an AC1 stan, I'd assume you know where to access the documents you gather during your investigations to formulate a plan of attack. It wasn't until Unity that the handholding level design that followed would finally cease and allow you to infiltrate any way you see fit
Some of these games require self-imposed rules to be even slightly challenging outside the bullshit failure states littered all over the later ultra-linear missions. Never buy armor if you want to react quickly to near death encounters frequently, or medicine if you want an endurance challenge to manage your health as the fight progresses, or ignore chain kills if you want to manage breaking one target's defense at a time, or some combination thereof if you think you're really badass
I believe the intention is for you to join your character in reflecting on your target's dieing words and come to the conclusion of whether they had to die for yourself. Although the Assassins are indisputably painted as *more* morally just than their adversaries, I sometimes just go for a run or a horse ride after an intense assassination or debate to think it over. That's why I looked forward to the philosophical discussions with Al Mualim, and nothing has really held up since
Nice work dude 👍 keep it up 💪
I loved this! I would enjoy it if you did the rest of the franchise.
another great video kbash thank ya for all ya hard work the ac franchise is def overall a mixed bag but i still love 3,4, and rouge will eventrully have to give the later games a shot too
Great video k bash :)
AC1 will always be one of those emblematic 360/ps3 generation moments to me. basically incomplete, but intriguing enough to get me hooked. thanks for a cool-ass retrospective on a series that really does deserve it, for better or worse
Please do a video or to finalizing this! You're the best bro! Please keep up the great work!
That pure joy in the first few seconds is amazing.
All they had was a cool climbing simulator.
The word assassin was a total misnomer, I expected a mix hitman and thief the dark project back in the day.
Instead I got medieval GTA.
The story twist at the end of the second one made sure I never played another one of these, also because they never added gameplay actually worth playing.
The gameplay never evolved after the first one, they just added more and more side missions.
At least that’s my impression, since I never played any of them after the second game.
The puzzle parkour places in AC2 were easy for me, no joke. Literally had no trouble with them.
Great videos! Keep it up.
Revelations had a really fun platforming minigame I wish you mentioned/played, it's really really fun
I actually think Revelations was the best.
The hook blade and expanded bombs with the bomb crafting stations really tried to focus the game on avoiding combat and focusing on parkour. Together these things aligned the game to a unified vision.
I recently played through the ezio trilogy for the first time, and had heard that everybody liked 2 and Brotherhood the best, but I ended up perfering revelations. I was a little disappointed with Brotherhood, and like a quarter of the way into revelations I knew I liked it better. Constantinople was more interesting than Rome in my opinion.
your scripts are always bomb, good vid
Ahh yes, another video from my favourite youtuber
I love the captain falcon line at 10:24
My god the segment about BANCO was such a mood
having never been an AC fan, i was never told of the hurt-the-pope gameplay. i feel this might've won me over
I always forget AC was about a dude finding his ancestors bruh
New Kash? Let's fucking GOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Cmon Kbash, AC writing isn't Dan Brown tier. He at least is smart enough to not build up a story arc and main antagonist which even involved the sacrifice of his main protagonist to further that plot line, only to pussyfoot around it for ages before finally finishing it off in a damn comic. Not many are that level of all over the place incompetent.
I have the old Pokémon encounter theme as my ringtone and hearing that was a mild panic attack.
I would love your to continue this series of assassin creed games
The original Assassin's Creed is amazing and always will be.
Praise Banco, and Praise Brotherhood
Played AC2 and Brohood and I completely agree with your assessment.
It’s weird how KBash does a video on a franchise that I always just happen to be replaying, it’s honestly uncanny.
Very excited to see what he thinks of Origins and Odyssey. I personally dropped off with Syndicate, just got tired of the busy work. Genuinely curious if I'd feel differently about the new games or if I played them on the Switch.
If you play assassin's Creed one on PC with minimum graphics settings it becomes very easy to kill every single beggar and crazy shoving guy, because they look like polygonal monsters.
"Prince of Persia died for this!?", as a PoP fan, you have no idea how much this resonates with me.

Kbash: THE COMBAT IS TRASH LOL
Also Kbash: He’s not supposed to be going on murderous rampages!
I think the biggest problem is that whether you're *supposed* to go on them or not, the game often puts you in the position of having to fight a lot of people. And unlike a game like Mirror's Edge, it's not quite as easy to just run away from it sometimes. And since you have to deal with it, it should be a fun mechanic.
Perennial white guy, lmao. Good writing, man. Keep up the good work. Edit: in fact I think this is your best work so far. Hope the continuation of critiquing popular game series is as well received as it ought to be!
it's a-me Mario that is still my favorite line in the hole series
I hope you make a follow up video on this. I dropped the series after AC3, so I wonder how it's progressed since then and I don't want to give Ubisoft money so.
I think one of the biggest mistakes was after Revelations scrapping the 'Building the Assassin Order' Mechanic.
I friggin' loved doing that shit, yeah 3 had it but all of them were pre-made, it wasn't the same.
Thank you for talking about the jank.
