Chewbacca DID get a medal. It was explained in the Star Wars comics that he didn't value it (he instead valued honor & selflessness) and gave it away to a kid for an act of bravery.

yes, especially the current run of Star Wars comics Marvel is putting out right now which told the tragic story of why C3PO has a red arm now. Through the comics we are getting the whole picture of what happened before The Force Awakens, in between a New Hope and Empire, ect, ect. And they are all fantastically written.
