Yeah, the US didn't abolish slavery until after 1865, the descendants of those slaves didn't get equal rights till the 1960s, and we're still fighting to get the government, especially our conservative party to recognize those rights, and we're still trying to break down the systems that were built up during slavery and segregation.

@@Ranger1PresentsVirtualRealms well, it sounds like you might be trying to bait me, but I'll bite. the best example is the voting rights act. the voting rights act currently is being gutted piece by piece through lawsuits. currently black americans face the possibility of disenfranchisement through redistricting and gerrymandering. and there have been laws passed that make voting more difficult that affect black voters.
and lets not forget that US rights are not distributed fairly. black people, especially black men get arrested at a higher rate than white people. they also get longer sentences. police treat them differently to white people. everyday they face racism. inequality, racism and rights go hand in hand. and speaking also to incarceration of black people, Slavery still is legal in the US under the 14th amendment as a punishment for a crime, and forced labor is a reality for people convicted of a crime. and historically, that was created to essentially force freed black people back into slavery. they'd get arrested for crimes such as loitering, or homelessness, or some crime that was made up against them and then they'd be sent to prison work camps to do hard labor. and it still happens today. so much of our food that we buy in stores is made by prison labor either in part or completely. but yeah, that caveat in the 14th amendment alone speaks to not having the same equal rights. oh, and incercerated people do not have the right to vote. so again inequal rights.

A little history: In 1912, Herman Heaton Clay, a descendant of an African-American slave owned by Henry Clay, named his son Cassius Marcellus Clay in tribute to the abolitionist, who had died nine years earlier. This Cassius Clay gave the same name to his son, Cassius Marcellus Clay Jr., who became an internationally renowned world heavyweight champion boxer. He changed his name to Muhammad Ali in 1964 upon converting to Islam.

@@scotthill1600 I mean, uh, Henry Clay was kinda a turd when it came to slavery. He decried slavery yet owned plenty and made many compromises that strengthened slavery (it delayed the Civil War, granted, but uhhh). He owned 50+ slaves and only freed something like 5 of them. Muhammad Ali had every right to be annoyed by his slave name since his family wasn't freed by Cassius but owned by Henry.
It's still silly, don't get me wrong, but dude's family was owned by a different Clay than the heroic one. There is room to complain about "a slave name".

      @firstnext5482 6 місяців тому +7

@@scotthill1600 Most people of note who opposed it ideological but practiced it anyway did so for either political or business reasons. Jefferson ended the importation of slaves from Africa, publicly stated that Slavery was the greatest threat to the stability of the new nation, but refused to free his own CHILDREN born into slavery.
Henry Clay was called the Great Compromiser for many reasons- he decried slavery yet owned slaves and strengthened the Fugitive Slave Act. Some could argue he was trying to avoid civil war and his actions delayed it but, still, that war was inevitable from the founding of America.
Cassius was rare in that regard, where his actions lined up with his words. To carry his name would be honorable but Muhammad Ali's ancestors were willfully enslaved by Henry, not freed by Cassius. It's a messy thing and, at the end of everything, his decision.

The following states followed Vermont (1777, as an independent countryof the time) & Pennsylvania (1779, 1st that's in the US of the time) followed the 2 stated to abolish slavery......
      --New Hampshire & Massachusetts 1783
      -- Connecticut & Rhode Island in 1785
      -- Virginia in 1792
-- Tennessee broke apart of North Carolina to abolish slavery in 1796
-- the state of Ohio was formed in 1803, and almost immediately abolished slavery
Since the War of 1812, the following states abolished slavery until the American Civil War.... Indiana (1816), Illinois (1818), Michigan (1836), Wisconsin (1848), and Minnesota in 1858

One thing to keep in mind is that there were a lot of fees associated with emancipation at the time which meant that when Cassius freed his slaves his loss wasn't in terms of his net worth going down, it was because he had to pay a lot of money to stop owning people.
Its why a lot of free blacks owned members of their family or anti-slavery individuals in general owned slaves; it was much cheaper to buy someone and let them live a free life than it was to buy someone and legally free them. Or you inherited them and it would cost more than your net worth to free them so if you tried you literally couldn't.

The problem with bringing duels back,
Then the person who is quicker and better with a weapon will win the argument. Not necessarily the person that is right. That opens up a huge door.
Gunslingers could effectively do whatever the hell they wanted. Because whomever is going to stop them, will get killed. And the only real threat, is other gunslingers.

Yes, it's that kind of duel. Bro was (legally) stacking bodies.
Also, yes. We kinda had a 4 year armed "disagreement" over slavery (and some other issues that were also very important, but much less talked about) from 1861 and 1865. Relatively recent to European history, but our country was less than 100 years old at this point. Two very different time scales, but man have we made good use of the time we had... I think we've only spent ~20 years of our entire history NOT at war.

Not only was he a committed abolitionist and a hell of a fighter, Cassius Clay was a renowned ladies’ man. While he was U.S. Ambassador to the Russian court, he was going through Russian noblewomen like a 3-balled tomcat. And whenever anyone objected to it he’d challenge them to a duel and watch them crawl away with their tail between their legs.

The sad thing is Nick is right, no one knows about Cassius Clay. Our schools don't teach about him. I knew of him because my grandfather told me about him. You see, my grandfather told me that the reason no one talks about Cassius Clay is that men today can not measure up to the standards of being a man like Cassius Clay. He also taught me that I should live my life to try to measure up to such standards. Even if one can't reach those lofty heights, one should always strive to do so.
