Cool video, thumb up ;-) Didn't actually play On Mars for a while but regarding the "level 1 tech flaw" you mention, if I remember correctly, the required tech to build is equal to the number of already existing same building you connect to, not the final size of the complex. So level 1 tech is already useful, to actually build level 2 complexes, and no player can sit on a tech to block it.

No way. Oh my gosh, how did I miss this! Grr…

Yep. You are right. Page 14: “Total number of buildings you are connecting to.” Rule correction video soon to come. THANK YOU!!

@@theperfectboardgame Your point about a player not upgrading a tech intentionally to prevent it from being used is still valid though, past +1 anyway

I could have misunderstood but when you were discussing mechanics it sounded like you said you could chain executive actions. You can only perform one executive action per turn iirc.

I implied that, didn’t I? 🤦‍♂️Alright. If I’m going to make at least one mistake, better hear about all of them! I’ll tear a corner of my board game reviewer chit

Great review! I love the complexity and interaction for such a beefy euro.

I love interactive like euros like this. I am always trying to find good ones.

I have been agonizing over weather or not to purchase this game, considering the cost. And trying to decide between this and Kanban EV. The video was very helpful. Thank you.

Lacerda games are an investment in more ways than one. Aside from the money, you need to budget the time to learn and teach the rules, the time to actually play the game, and the space to store those large boxes. I am agonizing over buying Weather Machine, but I just don’t think I can budget the time to play it enough. I am not satisfied with how often I get to play On Mars.

I’m surprised no one had corrected you about your first complaint about technology, so I’ll have a go at sharing what I think you missed.
In the section of the rulebook describing how you use technology to build complexes, it states: “The level of the Tech tile used must be equal to or greater than the total number of Buildings that you are connecting to.” So with Oxygen Condenser tech at level +1, you can actually build a 2-building complex, since the level is equal to the number of buildings you are connecting to (

Yes. I think someone corrected me on a different video because I was later made aware, but your explanation is excellent!

It is a bit of a mess, but yes it’s fun. Actually it’s currently my favorite, somehow barely nudging out Rococo. Are you on Tabletopia? I’d love to play a game of On Mars with you.

Enjoy your watching your videos. But I think this video could (or should?) be updated after a few plays following the rules properly. It seems like there are a few things not right mentioned in this video (however small they may seem) that would change the feel of the game.

Since the rating of the components are 3/5. Can you give an example of a game you would rate 5/5?

    • @theperfectboardgame
      @theperfectboardgame  2 роки тому +2

Great question. Dice Throne. Tang Garden. Everdell. I even think just having thoughtful artwork, like the Gallerist, is better than On Mars, (Gallerist I would rate 4/5.) These games are practically toys in themselves.
I should add: in my opinion, great components are usually compensating for something. None of the games above have better gameplay than On Mars.

Owned it. Played it 4 times and got rid of it. Too many small rules/tedious housekeeping killed it for me... Way over rated on BGG at 55. Played Hansa Teutonica last night. Much more nuance with barely any rules... Personally see peeps on BGG trying to keep their crappy game's price high...

One of the guys I played with said it would make a great video game or app, just so some of that stuff can be automated.

I played Hansa Teutonica. That was a disappointment for me. I love the complexity of On Mars, and I despete it’s dense rules, it feels streamlined other than complicated.
But for me Hansa was to shallow in action possibilities and atmosphere. I’m more facinated about Terra Mystica for example.
