When you use the landing pot action, you skip step 1... but do you still get the bonus from the turn order spot and collect your workers from the surface?
This has been one of the best board game tutorials I've ever seen. I got On Mars a few days ago, watched one other tutorial and still felt lost. This video was so well structured and paced however, that I feel completely confident to set it up and play a game. Thank you so much for how much work this must have been to make!
Thanks Chris. A few people have said that. I actually feel that with my last few videos, each one has been my best yet, but this one certainly required a lot of effort and I'm very happy with the end result :)
I've always been a fan of Vital Lacerda designed games. Man, this really is shaping up to be another fascinating brain-burner for sure! Great video on teaching the game.
The best explanation of On Mars that one could have ever made. After trying to figure out how to play the game myself and to teach my friend later on, I realised how much effort was put in to make this video, The explanation is so streamlined and answer all of the questions that I had when I was reading the rule book myself.
Fabulous! I love how the movie on the shelf changes constantly too. That’s a great touch. The rulebook was great as was this. Thanks for all your hard and great work Paul!
I like reading the rule book as i play through the game for the first time. I follow that with watching a how to play video to see if rules were missed. I will admit... rules were missed. HAHA! Great how to video. You and Watch it Played are always the first channels I check for a how to.
Very well done video for a highly complicated game. Thanks for taking the time to do this and clearly pushing through the process of wrapping one's head around all the intricacies.
Thank you so much for your videos. While I get everything I need from reading the rules you take my confidence in interpretation of them from 10 to 100 every time. You certainly are not the only one making videos like this but you are by far the best hands down.
You made this game SO understandable. Thank you so much, looking forward to playing this soon, and I was initially quite intimidated... until I saw Paul Grogan was on the job! Keep up the excellent work!
Seriously well done. I just played this game at PAX unplugged and was totally hooked, and this rules explanation is phenomenal. I’m just going to have my friends watch this, no way I can teach it this well!
My compliments for a thorough overview of the gamerules, good pronounciation, useful examples of a action and a good video montage! Seeing an image with the status of things before and after the action really helps out!
Thanks so much! Not every detail sunk in, because I'm tired from work, but I'm excited to try this game with friends tomorrow. Changing films and books on the shelf was a nice touch, I appreicate it ;]
Brilliant stuff Paul, just about to play for the first time. I have not felt so intimidated about learning a game for years but as usual you've produced a brilliant tutorial. Intimidation has turned to excitement.
Thank you so much, Paul. Awesome explanation! Amazing how you manage to structure this huge amount of information in a way that (even) I can follow. Great work! :)
You Sir, are a machine :) Such a complex game explained crystal clear (as always). Each aspect is shown in great detail. I'm getting my copy tomorrow. I enjoyed this video a lot, and will probably be coming back to it for reference a lot. Thanks!
Thanks for another great rules video. Imagine, I spent maybe 2-3 weeks on and off learning the game. Than Yesterday made my wife play it with me. She freaking beat me 135 to 83.
WAW !! You always find a way to explain very well and very usefull, even a such complicated game as this one.... it seems more complex than Lisboa... But now everything is clear in my head.. ready to explain to my mates !! THANKS !
I would say it is more complex than Lisboa. Thanks for the kind words, videos like this take a long time to create, and a lot of the time is spent in the planning stages, scripting, storyboarding, etc.
Paul, thank you for the terrific video. I've read the rules which are well done, but this video really makes it clear how to play the game, although the strategies will be an ongoing discovery. I did have one clarification though -- when we first build a mine complex (2+ mines), we get to put a progress cube down in that fifth column showing the mineral, correct? However, that does not advance the LSS. I think that is right, but it is not really mentioned in the rulebook or the video, so I wanted to be sure.
I thought I did mention that in the rulebook and video, but you are correct. The first time you create or expand a mine complex, you get to put your Mine progress cube into the progress area. The LSS doesn't change, as Mines are not part of the LSS. So yep, looks like you got it right :)
UA-cam could implement an LTU-button (Lacerda Thumbs Up-button), which you could klick any time you watch one of Paul's videos to refresh the rules of a Vital Lacerda game and which increases the Thumbs-up-count by one.
Walked past you at the UK Games Expo and bought On Mars right at that stand you were near :) Didn't say hi, as I didn't want to bother you. But I'm definitely watching your rules explanation. Good stuff.
Great video. Also, I do believe I saw the cover for War of the Worlds, as narrated by the one and only Richard Burton. Classic. Let’s go Thunder Child.
I like to work the other way around. I love the video to have a quick feeling of the rules and then I will dive in the book to let it all sink in. This video is also great to have a quick update on the rules if you haven't played the game in a while.
Amazing. I'm gonna need to use this to make teaching notes. Usually I have a strict order I like to teach thing in but this game requires some sidebars, and you chose them perfectly to make this make sense.
13:11 I've notice one little missing thing Paul, maybe i'm wrong but it seems to me you did not mentioned it. You say that minerals can be used as wild card resources and can be used as anyone of the 4 other resources. It's true but there's an exception to that. It's when you complete a contract. You must have exactly the resources required to do so. I think it's not possible to explain everything but i think this is important :-)
Been writing down the rules for a week now, just starting to under stand how the buildings work, and bot/rovers. Now i must understand executive actions, cant wait to terrorize my family with this game.
Thanks for the great video! I got a question regarding R&D action(14:36), if developing the same tile twice, does it have to move to an empty spaces on each step? Let's say column +3's two spaces are both occupied and I have a tile at column +2, can I move it twice to column +4(if there's an empty space at +4)? Or I need to move one of the tiles on +3 first? Thanks.
Hi Paul, Thank you for an excellent video. About to play my first game soon. Did you make a mistake at 30:28? You are efficiently upgrading 3 buildings but is the Aqueduct upgrade correctly placed? It is a level 3 blueprint but you upgraded a single aqueduct. Thank you again for your excellent and very clear tutorials.
In the setup - how is order for placing and revealing starting buldings? First reveal starting building on the map, or first players places their starting shelter (and starting buildings are unrevealed)?
Paul, sorry if this has been asked before. When the end game is triggered you say finish this round then play another round. Does the round consist of one turn for every player or does a round consist of a number of turns depending on where the shuttle is positioned. In other words if the Shuttle is at 3 do we each get another three turns after the end game was triggered or do we only get one more turn no matter where the shuttle is? Thanks in advance.
wow, amazing rules video for an amazing game.. can't wait to play it! got it two days ago.. :D I hope it won't burn my brain too much though.. ^^ love it already!
I've been really hit-and-miss with Vital's games (CO2 being the real low point, sadly, as I love the theme), but thought The Gallerist was alright and really enjoyed Lisboa, and this one looks pretty good, but just a matter of finding a victim or 2. Great job with the video as always!

@@GamingRulesVideosCan you copy these to the video description for built in chapters in the video player?
@@coreyredmon5611 That has already been done (years ago), but it doesn't appear to be working. Not sure why. Let me try and fix it.
Vital Lacerda and Paul Grogan: name a more iconic duo. Thanks, legend!

This video was so well structured and paced however, that I feel completely confident to set it up and play a game. Thank you so much for how much work this must have been to make!
I am so impressed Paul. You did an outstanding job. You always produce top notch work but this might be your best to date. I can’t wait to play.
Thanks Chris. A few people have said that. I actually feel that with my last few videos, each one has been my best yet, but this one certainly required a lot of effort and I'm very happy with the end result :)
This is a masterful explanation! Perhaps the best board game how-to I've ever watched!
I personally think I could never got how to play the game without this video, just by the rulebook. Best regards from Russia!
This is one of the best online gaming tutorials I have ever seen for any game. Great job.
Thanks!
Agreed. For the first time ever, I used this video to teach a game rather than do it myself.
Easily one of the most underrated channels for tabletop games! Succinct and easy to follow even for a monster game like this. Very impressive Paul!
Alex Tyson thanks!
Excellent coverage of the rules for an extremely complicated game with top shelf cinematography and editing as always. Keep up the great work Paul!
I like the Easter eggs on the shelf in the background. Some nice mars related films you got there 🤓
Want to know a secret. I own none of these DVD's :)
Wow. I can’t WAIT to get my copy. Every time you explain a new rule I’m like “oooooh that’s so clever”

@@GamingRulesVideos HA! Clearly... those mischievous little sci-fi fans them :)
This 45 minute video just saved me several hours of pouring over the rule-book. So excited to now to jump right end and start playing.
Revisiting the game and astounded how good this tutorial is. This one deserves some sort of Gaming Video Award!
Re-watching this again in 2022 for my 2nd game after a long search for my own copy! Thanks Paul for the rulebook as well as the tutorial!!

Very well done video for a highly complicated game. Thanks for taking the time to do this and clearly pushing through the process of wrapping one's head around all the intricacies.
I’m so glad I don’t have to learn solely from the rule book! Thank you

That's a lot of different Mars movies on the background of each section! Amazing video as usual Paul!

I watch a lot of channels and this was the most concise explanation of this game.

Great job Paul. Exactly what I needed to get started! I also appreciate where you put an emphasis on the strategy - why X is important.
Marvelous Paul! Another outstanding rules explanation. Thank you. Nice twist with the changing Movieboxes in the board behind you 😉
Brilliant rules guide. The strategy tips and hints on things to watch out for are also greatly appreciated! Thanks, Paul.
I had the advantage with this game of being one of the developers, playtesters, and having demoed it about 20 times to various groups :)
Thanks so much! Not every detail sunk in, because I'm tired from work, but I'm excited to try this game with friends tomorrow. Changing films and books on the shelf was a nice touch, I appreicate it ;]
Thanks for the tutorial. The game really looks hard to learn even with the help of this video, so I guess I will need to watch it several times.
Yup amazing production! We also learned about the BBC T.V. series "Life on Mars" :) -- mainly because my daughter insisted the prop was a board game.
Thank you!
Amazing rules! Clear and helpful!
