Born and raised Alaskan here, this video is absolutely correct. I would also like to note that the Maryland blue crabs are the only other crab that comes close to our Alaskan king crabs in terms of flavor. I remember visiting Maryland a few years ago and being skeptical when locals raved about their crabs. But after sitting down at a crab shack by the bay, covered in Old Bay seasoning, I was blown away by how sweet and tender the meat was. The experience of cracking open those shells while sharing a bucket of crabs with friends felt just as satisfying as the crab boils back home in Alaska. Maryland blue crabs may be smaller, but they definitely pack a punch when it comes to taste. Props to them for holding their own!

Alaskan red king crab is in high demand internationally, and the short harvesting season and limited cold water habitat make it expensive. Snow crab is more affordable here than king crab because it has a longer harvesting season. Snow crab typically costs $20-40 per pound here.

I've read something about king crab populations collapsing or at least decreasing in Alaska which is really unfortunate. Their king salmon populations are also crashing though oddly enough the sockeye salmon are breaking records. Growing up in California I really enjoyed the availability and affordability of Dungeness crab I've even caught a few myself.

You need to try a Sri Lankan Mud Crab. Singapore chilli crab style, or black pepper. As a crab lover myself, i can confidently say it is the most delicious crab out there. Not sure if you can get good ones where you live tho

Most crabs sold at restaurants in Maryland are not from Maryland lol. I live in South Carolina and I have family in Maryland on Chesapeake Bay. So we know our blue crabs. There really is no taste difference. But it’s crazy how much people charge in Maryland. Blue crab prices are high everywhere. But we catch our own in Charleston. Down here it’s about 40 dollars for 3 dozen of mixed blue crabs. I can’t remember the price I saw on a bushel. But 40 was a good price I thought. Just a little over 1 dollar a crab.
We used to be regulars at Red Lobster when they sold King Crab. We'd go and eat like carnivores. Nothing else there was good to eat, but we'd eat pounds of those King Crabs. They took them off the menu around 2014 or so, and we haven't returned since. Even Red Lobster couldn't mess up King Crabs!
MD Blue at #2 is big, when the difference between that and #1 is that I can go outside and chill for a few hours and catch some MD blue real quick. Can't really go grab an Alaskan king without extreme measures.

Look to be fair maybe the blue crabs you have in Maryland are different, I live about 2000 miles south from you so its a VERY different climate, BUT the blue crab we have down here is disgusting. Its barely crab at all really. Its not sweet at all, you have to drench it in butter to get any flavor out of it and its chewy and a bit slimy if im being honest. They also say not to eat them over a certain size because they can make you sick. The only reason people eat them at all is they are a common and easy to catch source of food. Any little kid could grab 10 a day with a butterfly net making them an affordable food option in poorer areas.

Fresh out of the ocean Alaskan King Crab, taste NOTHING like what we get from the market. Fresh doesn't need flavor enhancers like butter, garlic, etc.
