Why not try to place the video the other way… u can only see the top , why not the inside where u trying to sharpen… u keep saying u see that… u see that…??? What???
Best advice i can give someone starting to sharpen - DON'T WAIT TILL ITS DULL. Get it when it still has the right shape to it. Trains your eye and trains the feel of the file. Keep file in a straight line alignment to with your elbow.
I am just starting to sharpen my own chains and this guy seems to have the best videos and being new to this, I couldnt figure why some guys were so adamant about counting strokes and having teeth all the same size...it didn't make sense to me. All we're looking to do is sharpen the tooth right? So that why I'm here. Billy seems to know his stuff and his videos are helping alot of guys and dispelling some bad techniques from guys teaching bad or pointless techniques. This is the guy I'm choosing to take my saw advice from hands down. I just use my saws around the property and to cut some occasional firewood. It's nice to not have to pay to have my chains sharpened or buying new ones. I dont saw much but this is nice to know for sure. Thanks Billy

Even though I have watched UMPTEEN videos on you sharpening chains I am always enthralled by your ability to quickly sharpen a beat up chain. And in watching I have learned to sharpen my chains as well. So much so that I find myself using a hand file more than I do my Oregon grinder. Thanks Buckin'!

This was so helpful. I've been felling and cutting my own firewood now for over 15 years. My first saw was a brand new MS250 with a blown piston that someone had at the end of their driveway to be thrown out (ran it without oil I guess). I learned a lot rebuilding that sucker! But I never had a good teacher on sharpening and have had to learn what I could on my own, but I've always felt handicapped by the stupid Stihl sharpening jig. As a woodworker that uses hand tools, sharpening is a huge part of my work, so see this was really an "ah ha!" For me to watch you do it this way. Now I can take my saw sharpening to another level. Thanks, Billy! You're a truly kind and generous soul! You videos are so uplifting and inspiring.

Absolutely beautiful video in so many ways! The camera work was exquisite, and I could actually see the metal filings exiting as you pushed the file! I still remember some of the very earliest videos you did on filing technique, and I remember so much of what you were teaching then. I have learned to listen to the sound of the file as it cuts. I remember you talking about how with the first few passes, the file typically sounds very rough and bumpy, but at the end it's almost a whisper! Great teaching as always! You would be proud of the chain I just hand filed. Shes a beauti! Square ground chain that had previously been round filed. Went through with a bevel file and oh man shes nasty. Still gotta follow up with the raker gauge. Cant wait to drop it in the wood. Love the content brother keep it coming!

I am an amateur Sawyer I watch your videos all the time I been sawing for 25 year's and you show me things I never heard of that work. Thanks man please don't stop making videos. I mostly do it for fire wood but I also remove dangerous tree's from homes. I have no climbing gear but a sharp brain and wise tips like you provide are the best. I throwed away alot of good chain's because I thought they were done and if would have known good completely sideways with file to get that hook back I would have done what you showed me. I run a holtsforma 660 it's a beast. I bought it to make my own lumber. I live in WV tree's are everywhere. I ptefere soft wood but walnut and oak for fires ash stinks to me I don't know why. Thanks again. By the way you are one of the best sawyers I seen so far
No matter how many videos I watched, I could not get the results to come close to what we've just watched. Then I finally found something that really made a big improvement - my glasses. Amazing how much sharper and consistent you can be when you can see. I should have known better...
I hear ya Steve, I don't yet regularly wear glasses but when filing chain I find it nearly as important as a good file. Keep it sharp and in the wood, Steve!
I was looking through a lot of the other instruction videos and I was thinking to myself if I had all those gadgets I could sharpen the chainsaw too in a couple of minutes. But all I have with me in the bush is a file.. it was refreshing to see your straightforward video ...thanks guy from this gal.... Plan on checking back with you for a couple of other things...

Started cutting wood oh way back about 1989-90. Took me a couple of years in the woods filing b4 i got it perfected. I agree 1000% that it takes time to learn how to get it exact. Anyone trying to learn keep up the practice and listen to what someone who does it regularly say or shows you. Great video love the close up shots. God bless.

Everything I know about power saws has come from people like you (mainly you!) on UA-cam and now I can hand sharpen, have rebuilt saws, have fixed saws for other people and have my own little firewood business. When the chains worn out they didn't cut so good anymore. I checked the gullets and guess what, only 'ski slopes' and no C's. We have been harvesting dead and/or down national forest Pinyon in Nevada for 24 years. It’s at the 6000’ level and some of it can be big. Our record is two cords from one tree. Falling and maintaining a sharp chain was a mystery until you clarified the process…and I’m still learning. The 372 and I both thank you for the detailed and accurate methods you teach. Plus, it’s fun as heck and the family stays warm all winter. Win-win.

Fantastic video both professionally and personal great candor in teaching you are a natural teacher. On to the subject matter, we are at this moment have at least 100 trees being taken down behind our property, and trees of at least 100 feet or more which could cut our home and new garage in two. Next to our garage had hardwood stump I decided to cut stump into criss cross paddern to chip it away with backhoe and what was produced was saw dust. Hardware store to have chain sharpened and 2 new ones to go. He used an electric grinder on the old chain and tried it when I got home and it wouldn't cut do da, worse than before. New chain and was able to do the down cuts and across and removed stump. Told my Logger Mike about what had happened and he said exactly what you said "never ever let anyone use a electric grinder on your chain ever, it blues the chain". He proceeded to say once it's blued a file won't work, the tooth is ackually hardened. And then I stumbled onto your channel, you just confirmed the reasons why thank you so much for this video explaining. On another note, my Co-driver and I drive to Nanticoke, Ontario to pick up loads of nitrogen and the people we encounter are of the highest caliber in action and in words, sincere nice people with class the blue collar and management I'm speaking of. Thank you
As I'm reading all the other posts a question came to mind. Are the rakers you speak of the steel bump directly in front of the cutting tooth? And I am surmising their job is to clean the saw cut?

since i looked your vids like some years already, i started to file with my hands to, electric scharpening i never did like, the chissels getting way to hot ( like the beu color like hardened steel ) and chains are dull in moments, but its a thing we all can learn when take the time for it, happy eastern all, stay safe and healthy

Thanks Buckin' I was doing some filing today on my Dolmar/Makita 7900. First chain, still learning. This helped quite a lot. I dropped about 15 trees the other day for a friend (working) who is building a house on a hill with plenty of gum trees on it. Medium sized, some dead, gum trees (100ft) the largest ones. I love the 7900, even though it's stock, it really has some balls. Keep up the good work, Cheers,

Been sharpening saws for three decades now and I still have to turn the saw around and lay it across my leg in the field. Buckin’ is right! Learn to use your left hand before you get too comfortable turning the saw around and you’ll be more efficient and your pants will definitely thank you for it!
Good morning buckin. Always a learning experience when it comes to sharpening a saw. These videos have helped me improve my technique and I thank you for that. I have a ways to go but I’ll get there. ❤️
For a demonstration I think it's more relevant to most regular people trying to get the hang of hand filing, most already have semi chisel on their saws and if you can't get semi chisel right then full is not the place to start. Professionally it has its place too, more durable in dirty wood etc.

I was using a file guide before because free handing looked alot intimidating! with your videos it gave me the confidence to try and try over and over again . Was real funky in the beginning but now I feel like my chains are on par with stock . Sometimes they feel even better !
Thank you for this video! I’ve been learning how to sharpen mostly by myself. I’m a retired dental hygienist so I’m well versed on sharpening dental tools. Another tip I heard years ago was about sharpening knives- if light reflects off the blade edge it’s not sharp. Makes sense, right? So I’m learning by myself but this video helped me how you set up over the blade. I was set up from the side and wasn’t getting the flat top blade perfect. I knew this was a problem so I’ll try your method tomorrow. I’m excited to get it perfect! I’m a 64 (today) year old woman, hubby handles the saw, I do all maintenance. Looking forward to watching all your videos! Thanks again!

Love the intro Buckin! Great sharpening video :) Thanks for taking the time and effort to get the camera set up with such a good view, I know that takes time to dial it in this well. To me, one of the best ways to check if its sharp it to check on the inside of the tooth and make sure you have a polish on the edge, ideally the entire inside of the tooth with have a polish on it, and as buckin puts it, a nice C shape that starts at approximately 55 degrees.

On to the subject matter, we are at this moment have at least 100 trees being taken down behind our property, and trees of at least 100 feet or more which could cut our home and new garage in two. Next to our garage had hardwood stump I decided to cut stump into criss cross paddern to chip it away with backhoe and what was produced was saw dust. Hardware store to have chain sharpened and 2 new ones to go. He used an electric grinder on the old chain and tried it when I got home and it wouldn't cut do da, worse than before. New chain and was able to do the down cuts and across and removed stump. Told my Logger Mike about what had happened and he said exactly what you said "never ever let anyone use a electric grinder on your chain ever, it blues the chain". He proceeded to say once it's blued a file won't work, the tooth is ackually hardened. And then I stumbled onto your channel, you just confirmed the reasons why thank you so much for this video explaining.
On another note, my Co-driver and I drive to Nanticoke, Ontario to pick up loads of nitrogen and the people we encounter are of the highest caliber in action and in words, sincere nice people with class the blue collar and management I'm speaking of.

As I'm reading all the other posts a question came to mind. Are the rakers you speak of the steel bump directly in front of the cutting tooth? And I am surmising their job is to clean the saw cut?

since i looked your vids like some years already, i started to file with my hands to, electric scharpening i never did like, the chissels getting way to hot ( like the beu color like hardened steel ) and chains are dull in moments, but its a thing we all can learn when take the time for it, happy eastern all, stay safe and healthy

Thanks Buckin' I was doing some filing today on my Dolmar/Makita 7900. First chain, still learning. This helped quite a lot. I dropped about 15 trees the other day for a friend (working) who is building a house on a hill with plenty of gum trees on it. Medium sized, some dead, gum trees (100ft) the largest ones.
I love the 7900, even though it's stock, it really has some balls.

Been sharpening saws for three decades now and I still have to turn the saw around and lay it across my leg in the field. Buckin’ is right! Learn to use your left hand before you get too comfortable turning the saw around and you’ll be more efficient and your pants will definitely thank you for it!

I’m glad that I’m not the only person to spot that.
For a demonstration I think it's more relevant to most regular people trying to get the hang of hand filing, most already have semi chisel on their saws and if you can't get semi chisel right then full is not the place to start. Professionally it has its place too, more durable in dirty wood etc.
glad I paid attention to this. Will seek to emulate your skills and not be worried about removing material to clean the edges up again.

I was using a file guide before because free handing looked alot intimidating! with your videos it gave me the confidence to try and try over and over again .
Was real funky in the beginning but now I feel like my chains are on par with stock . Sometimes they feel even better !

Thank you for this video! I’ve been learning how to sharpen mostly by myself. I’m a retired dental hygienist so I’m well versed on sharpening dental tools. Another tip I heard years ago was about sharpening knives- if light reflects off the blade edge it’s not sharp. Makes sense, right? So I’m learning by myself but this video helped me how you set up over the blade. I was set up from the side and wasn’t getting the flat top blade perfect. I knew this was a problem so I’ll try your method tomorrow. I’m excited to get it perfect! I’m a 64 (today) year old woman, hubby handles the saw, I do all maintenance. Looking forward to watching all your videos! Thanks again!

Love the intro Buckin! Great sharpening video :) Thanks for taking the time and effort to get the camera set up with such a good view, I know that takes time to dial it in this well.
To me, one of the best ways to check if its sharp it to check on the inside of the tooth and make sure you have a polish on the edge, ideally the entire inside of the tooth with have a polish on it, and as buckin puts it, a nice C shape that starts at approximately 55 degrees.
