I’ve taken what I’ve learned from you and spread this wealth of knowledge to my firewood cutting buddies. They’re in awe of how fast my saw cut. They asked me to show them pretty much after the first cuts. I said if I can do it, then you can do it too! Thank you again for the wealth of knowledge and info!
Thank you for teaching us about the chains, files, and your sharpening techniques. Since watching your videos, you have taught me well. I am no pro, but I now can hand file my own chains with great results, I Thank you Buckin Billy Ray with all my heart 👍
I knew there would be an amendment to clairify the gullet in/out that depends on the grind, roud hand file vs square cut. Thank you Sir for continuing education.
Makes sense to me friend! I remember a video of Harvey's ( Ironhorse) where he talked about how a chip is formed, and how the top plate cut, and what the purpose of the "C" shape was all about, and its importance in actually removing the chips as the saw cuts. He hit it quickly in the video, and I backed the video up several times to fully understand it. But after I saw it, it made so much more sense, and I spent a lot more time working on filing. Between you two, I've learned a TON of info! You all rock! Much love to all from Northern Alberta!
Hi Buckin and family, great video, I have learned lots from your filing videos, especially from back in the day of the eye in the sky you used to use to show the teeth. Thanks again for your knowledge and kindness. From NB , continue to watch your videos from years ago.
This old video popped up. If you're interested in or new to sharpening, this video answer lots of questions pertaining to the terminology of chains and sharpening. I know that i watched and learned from this one years ago. Great work BR. 👍😃
Very interesting Buckin thank you . I bought a cheap grinder from Aldi , it taught me a lot . Good for reshaping damaged chains but the round file leaves the best Finnish . Good on ya !
Buckin you are a great teacher, I’m able to take what I learn from you and give it to my sons and feel comfortable with them running saws with me. Thanks for the great content and kindness God bless!
About 6 years ago i had 4 chains i had a shop sharpen then i had all dull chains and went to hand sharpen them and found out that a shop work harden the chain and my file couldn't file them. So u kinda got to what ever way u start by sharpen your chains you got to kinda keep doing that way for the life of the chain. Thanks to buckin my hand sharpening is better than a new chain out of the box. You people that hand sharpen know what i mean. Gota love a saw thats hand sharpen and it pulls it self hard into the wood. Buckin does the best information on getting u chain sharp. Tyvm buckin
Mini C - great idea! And I see you like cutting dogs heavy. I do the same so I can use the chain to pile my wood. Thank you for sharing your expert ideas. Cheers!
You should be called Buckin Billy Ray Rona, sharing your knowledge is highly infectious. I learned how to sharpen a chain from an earlier video, literally you made the penny drop. Great to see you running the Egan Straight Shot exhaust cover on that 500i! I run those on my 400 and 661. I can’t say enough great things about them! Throttle response or Crack that you speak about for limbing. The pull and overall sound! Hands down best bang for the buck for a saw this side of port work in my humble opinion!
Hey Buckin Billy THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.... that explained SO much. I appreciate it... much more clarity now.... I will be a much better filer now!!! Keep Buckin" Thanks
Hey buckin! I tried your baby C method with a 5/32 file (all I had on hand) on a 3/8 full comp, full chisel safety chain and boy does it rip! For being a safety chain I'm really impressed.
You hit the nail on the head BBR.... back in the day we would often use the 13/64 file on the "back half" of the tooth in an effort to retain the hook (or gullet) on a well worn chain. It worked well if done carefully....👍
I did miss this video. Thanks a million for this. I'm using 5/32 file. 1/8 files are to pricey. Lol. That baby c runs better then 7/32 filed chain. Awesome video buckin. I'm going to try the nasty hook with high rakers. I'll keep you posted

It’s fascinating to hear about the differences and how they impact cutting performance. I’d love to know more about any tips you have for beginners just starting with hand filing-any specific techniques you recommend? Keep up the great work!
Great video buckin , totally makes sense to me 100% , common sense , pretty cool to grind n leave the gullet in as a extra tooth , and to make the baby c also as a extra tooth , cool stuff buckin
Great video Buckin’! Damn, Stihl has certainly set the injector programming to give it a LOT of fuel. That puppy is still 4 stroking under some fair load!
Hi Buckin could you do a video on chin grinding and grinders for the farmer/semi pro user. What grinder to buy? Not a cheap £50 but also not a £500 machine. Thanks.
Billy im confused,I have a 3/8 chain on my 500i and the shop and stihl chart says to use a 13/64 file,I did notice that file cuts the gullet deep.but misses the very top edge on the top tooth.
I have a 500 I steel chainsaw and I always keep the chain very sharp I never have to force it or anything like that it goes through the wood like no tomorrow Great video I will have to try that one one of my chains👍

Buckin, try taking a "fine" slice off the "side" plate of the raker. Also I used to take a little time to roll over the raker to round it off. It's smoother...
My Stihl ms500i is my favorite and most used saw. I installed a bark box and Max flow air filter and soon a Wiseco piston. An aftermarket piston helps a lot.
Buckin have you ever used a Stihl 2 in 1 file? I sharpen my chain 1-2 strokes every tank of fuel. Works great out in the field with a stump vise for production firewood cutting.
Buckin, use to run Carlton Magna chisel .404 on a Olimpkic 284 and used Ferd files 28” bar loved that saw 30 years ago cutting firewood didn’t break it enough got greedy and turned it up well didn’t have the money to rebuild but now if I can find one would love to get one
Buckin,to add to my comment I just bought a house and got gotten married wife not helping with any bills didn’t go past 12 years Worked my butt off with 4 jobs finally got to a factory job that I love you might think I’m crazy but it’s the best money I’ve ever made 2 miles from home and only work 14 days a month don’t need to cut firewood but a dear friend of mine just had his second knee replacement going to buy a new saw and give him some help he has never been to Bunion going be there he love’s the Macs has two 2 man macs
I have 500i stock, do you recommend skip tooth chain? I have run into what you did on my hand sharpened chain. I also wonder if filling rakers deeper will help?
full house brother , rakers ? depending on wood and yer hook, its all in the filin' . a lower raker will help to an extent ,, skip,, you can afford to go a little more if ya want ,,but remember my brother try all these things we speak about , so yer words in the future come from experience , not ' i heard a guy say this. love to you and yer family . Rob, Just so ya know . I'm pickin' up on a sincere vibration from yer comment , and it does not go unnoticed here ,,, thx, appreciate yer humility
stihl definitely designed that saw for the production timber faller. it's a high rpm big wood big bar logging saw it loves sharp chain and big wood. loved the video 👍😁
I run the stihl ms250 and ms261 cutting creosote treated piles up to 20", 3-4" by 12" and 12" by 12". Building piers, docks floats... marine construction. I need to make precision cuts. The chain requires a 3/16" file. Do you think I'm using the most optimal saw and chain?
Hey buckin Billy Ray how do you like the sounds with the Egan straight shot Vs WCS barkbox you wasent so happy with the sounds from the barkbox in one of your ilder videos like you said IT sounded like crap Best regards from Denmark 🇩🇰
Is there a different between square filed chain vs ground? Also, what type of wheel do you use to square grind? If you use a standard picco sharpening wheel on a grinder, you could probably grind the baby c and forget about the files. Just a thought.
It’s a different type of machine to do square… standing symington… big wheel… square is fast cutting but it’s a clean wood chain only… a little bit of dirt and it’s dull! Round will last longer…
oh buddy thats a personal thing , in the west coast dogs breakfast we call it. you can be in maple, arbutus, cedar, fir . dogwood, cherry all by 10.00 am. so its most important to keep yer rakers set to a respectable depth and stick whith the line they give ya on the chain brother , some use semi chizel , but not me, just keep yer hook at a minimal
Any feedback or comments on those electric circular grinders? I was gifted one from my first boss (not because he didn't use it....it was 90 when he quit!) and that's about all I've used but I've never cut enough since working with him to find/know the difference and what the shortcomings are of the electric grinder (besides lack of portability).
BBR is just a file man. IF you use your grinder correctly then it’s gonna be fine. Don’t burn the cutters, don’t go to deep, don’t ski jump. It’s ALWAYS a fine line, but so is a hand file. Just sayin 😮
13/64 is for 3/8 Stihl chain. 7/32 is for 3/8 Oregon chain. I keep them both in my 3/8 file set. The handle on the 13/64 file has Stihl written on it with a sharpie and my 3/16 file has .325 written on its file handle. My Stihl picco files have an LP written on their file handles. I hand file everything.

Hey buckin Billy Ray how do you like the sounds with the Egan straight shot Vs WCS barkbox you wasent so happy with the sounds from the barkbox in one of your ilder videos like you said IT sounded like crap
Best regards from Denmark 🇩🇰
Is there a different between square filed chain vs ground? Also, what type of wheel do you use to square grind?
If you use a standard picco sharpening wheel on a grinder, you could probably grind the baby c and forget about the files. Just a thought.
HE HAS A LOT OF VIDEOS EXPLAINING ALL YOUR QUESTION S
It’s a different type of machine to do square… standing symington… big wheel… square is fast cutting but it’s a clean wood chain only… a little bit of dirt and it’s dull! Round will last longer…
They can both be either hand sharpened or machine ground…
Yeah man…1/2 way down I switch to my 13/64 so I’ve got a good angle on the cutters…. 💪😂
Hey buckin would like to get your take on what a good filing would be for hardwood such as oak that will hold an edge but not be to aggressive thanks
oh buddy thats a personal thing , in the west coast dogs breakfast we call it. you can be in maple, arbutus, cedar, fir . dogwood, cherry all by 10.00 am. so its most important to keep yer rakers set to a respectable depth and stick whith the line they give ya on the chain brother , some use semi chizel , but not me, just keep yer hook at a minimal
Don't forget to thumbs up. Thanks
Great explanation my friend thank you.
Just wish you could have matched file to chain sizes.thank you.
I’m about gettin the Gullet!!🤘🏼👍🏼
Do you think oilmatic chains are neccessary
To save the oil pump ?
