\\ My Favorite Flax Seed Gel Recipe (Updated 2020) //
\\ Today I am sharing my favorite flax seed gel recipe that has given me the most beautiful curls. This is the only styling product I have ever used that consistently gives me the curls that I want, and maintains my hairstyle for up to a week. You can also use this as a detangler to make wash day go by much faster. //
\\ I N G R E D I E N T S //
• 2 cups of water
• 1/4 cup whole, brown flax seeds
•1 tsp marshmallow root powder or ~1 tablespoon of marshmallow root
• 1 tsp slippery elm powder or ~1 tablespoon of slippery elm
• drizzle of your favorite hair oil (I use olive oil)
• OPTIONAL: 1/2 tsp hibiscus powder (adds extra hydration and volume, but decreases hold and the gel will have a thinner texture...)
• Whisk everything together, lightly cover with lid
• Bring to light simmer on medium heat
• Once simmering, lower heat and let sit for 15 minutes (stir occasionally to prevent burning)
• Cool for 40 minutes
• Strain with cheesecloth or nylon sock (This may be a little difficult, patience is key here!)
Storage
• Fridge for 1 week in airtight container, or...
• Freeze in ice cube trays/silicone molds... thaw out as needed.
TIP - before using, warm up the gel in the microwave on defrost (don’t worry, the gel will be okay… just make sure to stir it regularly and make sure it doesn’t get too hot!)

Hello loves! Answering some FAQ’s and providing some extra tips...
*1. How often should I try this gel before seeing results?*
_I suggest trying out this gel at least 3 times before deciding if you like it or not. Flax seed gel improves your wash and goes over time, and by your third wash and go using this, I’m confident you will enjoy it._
*2. How do you use the frozen gels?*
_I like to thaw these out beforehand by either placing them in a bowl of warm water (making sure they're in a sealable bag or jar), or in the microwave on defrost (don’t worry, the gel will be okay… just make sure to stir it regularly and make sure it doesn’t get too hot!)._
_After that, I will use the melted gel during my last step in my styling routine. If I have any leftover, I will store the rest in the fridge for up to 1 week._
*3. This gel leaves my hair crunchy! How do I deal with this?*
_Depending on the products you use underneath your gel, you may find that it leaves quite a hard cast… I am actually looking to get this cast every time as it helps my hair dry in the form that i want it to. Once my hair is 100% dry, I will use my hands to gently swipe over my hair (using the praying hands method) and gently scrunch it to break the cast. and your hair will look so stunning afterwards!_
*4. Can this gel be used on fine, thin hair?*
_This particular recipe is ideal for medium - coarse hair, and for those who want a strong hold in their hair. for fine hair I recommend using a lighter mixture: For example, I would suggest only using the hibiscus and flax seeds to start off with, and if you decide you want more hold, add only tablespoon of slippery elm or marshmallow root... and see how things go from there. You may even be interested in using golden flax seeds instead._
*_EDIT:_* _I was able to try this recipe out with finer hairs and I actually think this is exact recipe works very well for this hair type. Make sure to always add the hibiscus powder and be a light-handed when applying this. Hope this helps, Much love and best of luck!_
Thank you❤

TY
Just to let every know, I only have the golden flaxseeds and the marshmallow root and slippery elm in powders. 😂 Even so, I LOVE this gel! I use about 2.5 cups of water to a little more than 1/4 cup of flaxseeds. And I used several drizzles of extra virgin olive oil. Absolutely no flakes. Best gel EVER.
The brown flax seeds have more antioxidants in them than the golden flaxseeds. I would suggest a person to use both of them. Its great advice thank you for educating me on golden flaxseeds.
Thank you so much for including the recipe and directions can’t wait to make it ❤.
This was just in time for me. The freezing tip is a lifesaver. Soooooo many times flax seed gel goes bad for me. Also love your videos ❤️
I am personally thrilled that you use natural ingredients for your hair diy choices. I also enjoy all of the helpful videos. Please keep them coming. K
Can you show us how you apply it in your hair? love your content so much!

Another wonderful video your cinematography improves every time!
Thank you very much!
I've been searching flaxseed gel recipes and this by far is the best one I found because you have different recommendations on things to add or not add and you're very detailed, thanks.
Perfect. Definitely trying this.
They're so pretty! I'm trying this out tonight!
I so enjoyed the video. Thanks for another great recipe.
Gorgeous hair
So cute!
Beautiful...will definitely try it
Another great video! I'm going to try this out 😃
Out of all the flaxseed recipe videos I watched this is the best as it never occurred to me to freeze what's left. I was looking up preservatives to mix in a refrigerator batch but freezing would be more efficient for me. Thank you!
Thanks
Wow...I HAVE TO try this recipe! ❣️✝️
I’ll have to try this recipe In the past flax seed made my scalp really itchy so I stopped but hopefully adding the extra ingredients will help because my hair looked and felt amazing using it
Shalom sis
After making your gel add salt mix well… helps prevent the itching 🙌🏾💕about a pinch or two is what I use🙏🏾
Just found you... your videos are amazing! So you just set the gel out and let it thaw naturally? Very nice I don’t use a lot of gel but lately I want gel in my hair because I’ve noticed humidity has my hair looking horrible when I am out and about... I am definitely going to try this recipe... thanks again
Hi love this content. Love homemade. Can I substitute the Slippery elm and the marshmallow for another herb?
Your channel is full of so many great ideas. I am so glad I found your videos! I subscribed immediately!
Welcome to the family!
WOW! Just see this, will go and make this. Thank you.
Hope it works well for you!
I made this today. I have it in my hair!! Many thanks for your recipe!!!
My pleasure 😊 I hope you enjoy it!!
Please can you drop a DIY okra gel recipe and the right way to use?
I don't know why I never thought about freezing this in usable little cakes. I feel so dumb now. I freeze the seeds to use for smoothies since it's the only other ingredient. 😊 If you want to enhance the benefits, I suggest using herbal tea (sage and chamomile are my favorites) instead of just water.
Rosemary, fenugreek, Hibiscus is my go to. When it comes to my hair gels, Mask, shampoos, oils, conditioners,

Nice video. How long can the frozen version last in the freezer?
Hi besutiful, can I try henna together with glycerine to prevent it from drying out. or do you have another option? Thanks

Hi! Where did you get the slippery elm and marshmallow root shavings? I have powders of the two but prefer to use what you have
I love your videos
You have a great voice
I love your videos! Would suggest maybe a few drops of essential oils?
I always add a few drops of rosemary EO in my gel. Smells so nice :)
Natalie Duval that’s the exact EO I was thinking of adding, I’m going to try it! Thank you 😊
Nice!! How to use them? Straight from the fridge or you have to let them melt
I like to thaw them out beforehand by placing them in a bowl of warm water (making sure they're in a sealable bag or jar). And then I will use the melted gel during my last step in my styling routine. If I have any leftover, I will store the rest in the fridge for 1 week. Hope this helps
Have you shown how you use your frozen Flaxseed Gel, if s, what is the title of that video ; and if not, I would love to see a video on that. Thank you for sharing. Love Sekhmet SapphyreSun💗😸🙏
Can this flaxseed gel be good for low porosity hair?
Will hibiscus leave a red tint in your hair?
Hello lovely, thankyou for all your content. I wanted to ask how much glycerine you add to your spray bottle. Would love some ratio or measurement recommendations. Thank you !
I do not add a lot... Maybe about 1 teaspoon for every 16 oz of water. Too much glycerin makes my hair feel sticky so I try to keep it light. Hope this helps
@@VyalaBloom so helpful. Thank you! X

Can you freeze fenugreek paste in silicone trays as well?
I do and use them for my banana hair mask
Could this be used as a prepoo/ detangler?
Absolutely!
Wondering if this gel can be used on fine thin hair.
This particular recipe is ideal for coarser hair. You may be interested in a lighter mixture.... For you I would suggest only using the hibiscus and flax seeds to start off with, and if you decide you want more hold, try out a just a tablespoon of slippery elm or marshmallow root... and see how things go from there. Hope this helps, best of luck
Hey sweetie, I actually change my mind about using this recipe on finer hair…. I think this is exact recipe would be wonderful for your hair type. I would make sure to always add the hibiscus powder as well as to be lightheaded when applying this. Hope this helps, Much love
Hi, do you use this to style your hair after washing?
Yes I do! This is always the last step of my styling routine
I find that upon use of the flaxseed gel, my hair is really soft but after it dries, it leaves a crunchy feel (I don’t wanna say hard), any tips on how to manage that?
Yes I experience that as well! To help that, I always use my hands to gently swipe over my hair (praying hand method) and gently scrunch it to break the cast. Do this when your hair is 100% dry to avoid frizz... and your hair will look so stunning afterwards!
Vīôla thank you so much❤️
Can this gel be used daily?
Yes! If you don't rinse it off between uses, it will start to build up and weigh down the hair, but if you rinse/wash your hair on a more daily basis, you can absolutely use this every day! For me, the more often I use this gel, the healthier my hair feels.
Can I replace the marshmallow root and slippery elm with...fenugreek paste/powder?
The fenugreek will help make this gel a great detangler, however as a styling gel, I find that it makes my hair very stiff and stringy... not a cute look, so I would not recommend it.
@@VyalaBloom thanks for the response!! I just wasn't sure how to get slippery elm and marshmallow root online. Everything is sold out!
if you're in the US, check out Mountain Rose Herbs, they still have some in stock right now!
Can you sell this pls I don’t have access to all of these ingredients
Is it just me or does the flaxseed go watery when defrosted
I have actually started noticing this, so what I have been doing is thawing my gel in a small pot, and then I will let it simmer for just a few seconds (maybe whisk it a little bit) so that the water and gel can re-incorporate again. Hope this helps
Where are you ?
Today i used your recipe and made the flax seed gel. Awesome results. So bouncy, curly, and juicy are my curls. I love rhis gel. Its a keeper. Thank you so much beautiful!
