    I did not get into Harvard, but based on the criteria, I was probably around a 2-/2 academically, 3+/2- in personal, 2 for extracurriculars, and 2- in athletics. Additionally, I performed pretty well at the interview stage, and my interviewer said she was impressed with what I did in high school. I thought that might put me in a decent position, but maybe the way I wrote the essays wasn’t the best. I also put myself at a 2- for academics because even though I have been recognized regionally and got strong grades, my SAT score was stuck right under 1500 since my reading was pretty low.

    • @MSN539
      @MSN539 5 місяців тому +5

      I think you were a 3 for academics a 1 is for people with like international olympiads 4.0 with all the hardest classes and 1600 sat and 2 is for people who get like 4.0 and like 1580-1600 on sat. And a 1 in extracurricular is like only 20 people and those people did the most crazy stuff like get into rsi or winning an international stem fair so I think being recognized regionally is like a 3. Getting 1s and 2s are really hard my application is probably all 4s lol

      @@MSN539 oh, that makes sense. I honestly wasn’t quite at the right level to get into Harvard. I was hoping that my academic spikes might help compensate for my weaknesses. Like I pushed a transition for my school to be a much better place, and also got a high score on the AMC/Aime which is my academic recognition. Another huge accomplishment which I noted was my participation in research for my math circle. Harvard was a stretch. Luckily, it worked out in the end even if I didn’t end up at Harvard. It just wasn’t meant to be, and there are so many better student than me who actually have their stuff together. I just did the best I could and nearly killed myself figuratively from the workload. My best didn’t cut it, and Harvard has much better options.

    That is another thing lot of people do not understand and I am glad you brought up. Many want to enter these higher institutions and though I believe anyone can catch up, sometimes it is too much. A lot of students are not used to that kind of rigor and they (the ivys)know this, hence why they want to see things you have done outside your school setting, how resourceful were you in getting that research opportunity, getting things accomplished and prioritizing your time under heavy deadlines, they are looking for how well you balance they are looking for excellence and drive.

    I remember as a student, I didn't want to apply to the big schools because I wasn't focused hard enough on my academics and other things that big schools wanted. I loved science and that was all I cared about. I competed in Science Olympiad, I was in my school's herpetology club, took extra science classes, wrote all my essays about science, etc. Looking back, every school I applied to accepted me (not with high scholarships but that's different), and this kind of reason was honestly probably why. I was a top applicant without even realizing it. Not that I could afford anything- My parents had to send me to my safety school because it was the only school that gave me enough scholarships to actually attend. I'm sure schools are far more competitive now but it does make me realize that sometimes other people see your passion and potential differently from how you do.

    As someone who left their own undergraduate college admission in the rear view window, this was an illuminating video. My take away from this are that near everyone who is applying is smart and can do the academic work, so the criteria for admission falls into the subjective criteria for, "how can this person contribute to the university community". Harvard has been around for a long long time, I'm sure they know that a person who finds their niche for being part of the community at school, is much more likely to continue to be a "member of the community" and contribute financially after graduation. In essence, Harvard is looking at their applicants as an investment in the institution,

    • @GettingIntoUniversity
      @GettingIntoUniversity  5 місяців тому +6

      Yes, it is definitely possible to still get a 2 on the academic rating! It would be better if the B's are in Grade 9, as admissions officers like to see an upward trend in academics. If you have B's in Grade 11 or 12 (junior or senior year), you might need to compensate for it with some out-of-school academic awards, such as scoring highly on a math contest. If you've already gotten a B in the past, the best thing you can do now is to make sure you get good marks in all of your current and upcoming courses. Good luck!

    Hi, thank you for such an informative video! Someone was asking what if they don’t play any sport and I have quite the opposite issue. I’m really involved (national and international recognition) in a sport that is a bit niche and no university has a club nor coach related to it, therefore I don’t have a chance to try to become a recruited athlete (or at least I think so). What may I do to increase my chances of getting recognition from admission officers for such a thing?

    • @GettingIntoUniversity
      @GettingIntoUniversity  4 місяці тому

      Unfortunately, I'm not too knowledgeable on how Admissions Officers treat sports that they don't have teams for, however I can give you a bit of general information. Being very good at a sport shows a lot of good values that AOs like, like determination and discipline/time management. It's also something very unique, which most AOs will like. I would just write about the sport and describe it, as well as any of the awards you may have gotten from those sports to show these values. Good luck!

    Could you kindly provide your insight on my situation? I have approximately 3.9 GPA with A’s in 3 terms of physics, chemistry, calc, but got a C in calculus 4 due to administrative errors. Should I explain this in additional information section for schools like MIT? I also have a 1360 and reading your response to one of the comments, you mentioned that MIT highly values SAT, if my math is 700 and reading is 660, will that essentially eliminate my chance of transfer admission? And lastly, my extracurricular are generally very light weighted, with chess club and math club at school, and learning piano through self-teaching outside of academics. Does that make for a very weak profile? If it does, can I strengthen it through the essay section, with powerful and convincing writing?
    Thank you!

    • @GettingIntoUniversity
      @GettingIntoUniversity  4 місяці тому +2

      Yes, 100% explain it in the additional information section. Also, see if you can get one of your references to explain it in their reference letter, as that will add much more credibility to your claims. The SAT matters mainly for high school applicants, so as a transfer applicant it might not matter as much, and having a high GPA would compensate for it. Your extracurricular profile is below-average for applicants, but you can definitely strengthen it through the essay. Good luck!

I was sure that I would be able to pull off a 1550+ score, as I was getting a 1590 on my practice tests. MIT is my dream school, and if I don't get a SAT score above a 1520, will I still be able to get in. I have a 4.0 (valedictorian) though.

      Thank you for your kind comment! Out of all the T20 universities, MIT is probably the one which looks the most at test scores, especially the SAT Math Section. I would suggest you still apply, but make sure that you explain your SAT score and your situation in the additional information section. If you have other extracurricular mathematics accomplishments such as qualifying for AIME or a score of 5 on the AP Calculus BC Test, they can also definitely help compensate for your SAT score. I would also advise that you try to get top marks in any math classes you are currently taking at school. Good luck!

      The system is for Harvard only, however most top schools use very similar rating systems. For example, Yale uses a 1-9 system in place of having + and - like Harvard, while still using a 1-4 rating for the "overall rating". On the other hand, Stanford use different scales, with scores like "Test score" and "high school record" being separate, and having a 1-6 rating system. However, if your application is rated highly for one school, it will likely be rated highly for all schools, no matter the different categories.

Would the admissions committee view your application any worse/better than someone who had straight A's throughout the class and didn't have any personal/mental heal the struggles?
      Additionally, what if someone did poorly in the beginning of the class because they were in the process of changing something about themselves (such as changing how they study or getting accustomed to a new way of thinking of content), and it affects the cumulative grade at the end? I've never really understood how and why colleges expect people to get straight A's (meaning they had a perfect understanding of the content, how to learn effectively, and how to think of the content before the class) without making mistakes along the way to reaching the perfection of a skill, content, or method.

I am currently a freshman in an extremely small country (I am an international student) and I feel like in terms of extracurricular involvement I will be left behind a bit (considering all the 1s and maybe some 2s) there aren't that many opportunities here and doing something online is not as possible as well. What would you suggest to me? • @Personwhosings
      @Personwhosings 5 місяців тому

      I'm a student from India (and admittedly I do go to a very good school), I understand you; we don't really get a lot of the opportunities that our American counterparts would get.
      However, being in a small country may only be a small portion of the opportunity struggle. What is your family's economic status? (Networking/ better opportunities are open if you can spare a little more money---say more competitions/ access to capital to start an organisation).
      What about the ranking of your school compared to others in the area/ district? Certain schools offer better extracurricular opportunities if you have the finance to go there/ can get a merit scholarship if it matters that much to you.
      If these options are not available to you, I suggest starting your own small business, or social media account, coding an app, ANYTHING. Just a passion project that you can work on with what you have and explain the 'shortcomings' of your application in the extra info section. Quality and passion are probably better than what money can buy.

      Hey! The other commenter provided some really good advice, and I wouldn't suggest much that is different. One thing you can do is try and see if your country has any study abroad scholarships like Singapore's Foreign Service scholarship that will allow you to apply as a no-need student to top schools that are need-aware, boosting your chances.
      Also, a lot of schools aren't just looking for what you did, they are looking for what you were able to accomplish given your situation. A student who raised $2,000 for charity in a small town would be much more impressive than a student who raised $10,000 for charity living in Beverly Hills, and it's also about why you did what you did, not what you specifically did.
      Good luck!

    Omg this video is so perfect. Quick question though: How much do extracurricular matters? I grew up in a very protective Asian household where all I was told is to focus in school and my dad always discouraged me from doing anything that would result in me leaving his vision and always kept me by his side. I’m thinking of my extracurricular score is going to be a 4.
    Besides my 4.0 and 1400 SAT, my only real other strength is my writing since my English professor also often praises them and have used them multiple times as reference. Would writing unique and powerful essays compensate for my super weak extracurricular activities and give me a shot at top schools like Stanford, Northwestern, WashU, etc or is the extracurricular my doom 😢

    • @GettingIntoUniversity

      Hi, unfortunately without extracurriculars your chance of admissions does go down. However, if you talk about this in your additional information section, it might compensate a decent amount for the lack of ECs, and I would highly recommend that someone like your English teacher or your counsellor speaks directly about this in their recommendation letter. You still have a chance, especially if your writing is good. Also, almost anything can be an extracurricular: if you run fun online events for a group of people, that's an EC. Try to see if you have anything you can put down.

      Outside of the UCs, every Ivy offers really good aid, and they are also need-blind for US residents. Most of the Ivy+ Schools like UChicago also offer good aid and cover 100% of demonstrated need, and most of the top Liberal Arts Colleges like Amherst and Williams also have aid. Here's a good link with a list of all the schools which provide aid: blog.collegevine.com/schools-that-meet-100-percent-financial-need
      To estimate your aid at any university, you can use this link and search up each specific school you are applying to. Schools will typically offer very close to the estimate, and you can always negotiate with the financial aid office for more aid if you get accepted to a university: collegecost.ed.gov/net-price
      Good luck!

      no shit... unless your like a top level tenis talent that gets in for that. Also cs has by far the most accessible competions so many international competions. CTFS, Competive programing, online hackathons. You can also always contact local/regional unis for research and stuff like that.

    • @GettingIntoUniversity
      @GettingIntoUniversity  5 місяців тому

      Unfortunately, I'm not too sure about which groups are overrepresented, but CS is definitely a bit harder of a major than others. Tennis is a good way to stand out and it will definitely bump up your chances (although I can't say to what extent), and as the other commenter pointed out, there are many international virtual competitions like WAICY that you can participate in as a CS major. Additionally, if your country has a math Olympiad team or something similar, it might be easier to get on to that team than if an American was to try to get on to their country's math Olympiad team. Good luck!

      Hi, thanks for your comment! Judo can definitely help with your application. You won't be able to get accepted as a recruited athlete, but being good at Judo is a unique skill and universities are likely to recognize that. Winning awards at regional and national tournaments is also good, because it shows soft skills like perseverance. I can't say how much exactly Judo will be able to help you as I'm not an admissions consultant, and it will depend on your accomplishments and if you decide to talk about Judo in your essays. • @GettingIntoUniversity
      @GettingIntoUniversity  5 місяців тому

      Being on the national chess team is an amazing accomplishment, and it can definitely help you get a 1 in the extracurricular rating. Unfortunately there isn't too much specific data on what exactly counts as a 1, and it depends a lot on how you talk about the accomplishment in your essays. (e.g. if you used this opportunity to start a free chess coaching organisation, that would help more to get a 1). It would almost definitely get you a 2+, though.

      @GettingIntoUniversity  4 місяці тому

      I would rate you a 2 or even a 2+ in academics, depending on the context of the research paper. If you cold emailed professors and got the opportunity yourself, you would definitely get a 2+. However, if it was a paid opportunity, it would be significantly devalued. If it was an exceptional paper published in a credible journal, you might be able to bump yourself up to a 1 or 1-, but this would be very difficult and would depend on the paper.

      @@smushypancake2143 Well I have like a 4.1 right now and will finish HS with a 4.3 average. Note I’m from a smaller town and took every advanced course they offered, I’m in line to become valedictorian (which if you’re near the top of your class it doesn’t make much a difference). I applied test optional. I am the student body president, NHS President, and Business Professionals of America chapter president. Note for any extracurricular to be worth anything you gotta show your commitment to it and be able to tell Harvard what things you have done to better your community or school. I also went to a program called Boy State and won Speaker of the House and Frontier Party chair which allowed me to introduce my state governor for a state address at the capitol.
      Umm as far as essays go my best advice would be is don’t write what you think they want to hear, make sure it’s something only you could’ve wrote, they want to know what is different about you from all other applicants and why you should be admitted. But also it’s just as important to not get so stuck on the idea of uniqueness to a point where you can’t talk passionately about it. You want it to sound like you and if they can see you have passion and ambition for what you wrote I’d say your chances are much higher.
      Just be you, also in the interview make sure to prepare and make sure you align with the person you made yourself in the essays. The AO’s want to see that you’re consistent in that manner I’d say, but also it’s a chance to show what you couldn’t put in your common app or essays so try and find a good balance.
      Hope this helped, good luck!

  • @AtreyaKoirala

    I saw another comment and how this is based on 2012 data. How would it be harder to achieve a 1 or a 2 because in all honesty, this is the maximum high school students could genuinely achieve even in terms of 2023. Did you mean to say there are more applicants getting higher ratings thus making it more competitive and lowering your chances of getting in with the same ratings as those of 2012? I find it very unrealistic for a rating scale like this to have changed. I find it more realistic for ivies to have found applicants of higher ratings in general throughout this decade thereby lowering your chances of admissions even if you have good ratings. A phenomenal academic student could only go to the stage of having perfect scores and grades and receiving international awards plus publishing research and receive a 1 for academic research. Or an incredible athlete would only go to the extent of winning gold in an Olympic event and receive a 1 for athletic rating. How would the admissions officers possibly be able to increase this rating scale they had in 2012 even if they wanted to?

    • @GettingIntoUniversity
      @GettingIntoUniversity  4 місяці тому

      Here's a short quote from the Yale Admissions Podcast:
      "I’ll say it very plainly. We have more uncompetitive and sort of unqualified applicants in our first-year admissions process now than we did not even all that long ago."
      Source: admissions.yale.edu/podcast-transcripts (episode 30)
      I would say that due to grade inflation, the average academic rating has gone up, however it has not scaled proportionally with the number of applicants. Many applicants with high GPAs due to inflation but low SAT/ACT scores are now applying to top universities, inflating the applicant pool. However, this might be changed for 2024 admissions.
      There might be more of an emphasis on class rank now, as it normally provides a better view of the student's actual performance in context of their school. However, I cannot back this up, and it's just a hypothesis. The main issue with the academic rating is that there is now a lot of grade inflation making it very hard to differentiate between applicants, so schools might put more value on extracurricular ratings in the future which are not being inflated as much.
      For athletics, there has not been as much athlete inflation as there has been inflation of standard applicants, so it is likely that there would not have been any large changes, and the scale should remain the same. This is because athletics is direct competition (e.g. if one basketball player scores 10 shots a game while the other scores 9, even if both were scoring 6 and 5 before, you can still tell who is the better athlete.)

      It is probably beneficial to look at this as three legs of a chair. SAT score, High School GPA, and rank in class. A high SAT and high rank in class, puts the GPA (which can vary significantly in the over 40,000 high schools in the US) into a better context.

    • @GettingIntoUniversity
      @GettingIntoUniversity  4 місяці тому +1

      For most students, Admissions Officers want both a good GPA and a good SAT, and that will give you the best chance of admission. GPA is typically valued more though, unless you have extenuating circumstances for why your GPA might be a bit lacking while your SAT is very high. Here's a video we made on how much the SAT matters, describing how much it matters for different T20 schools: ua-cam.com/video/uzIAUljCS3g/v-deo.html&
