Lex Fridman is such a multitalented and genius individual. He is to me, what someone else's favorite celebrity would be to them. Then, enter Max Tegmark, another truly brilliant individual. Max has a way of expressing his philosophies regarding complex issues in such a human and relatable way. The combination of these two great people makes for a podcast like this one. A true gem. In a world with literally thousands of podcasts, and other social media platforms, where it is the same people repeating the same talking points over and over, and just switching host platforms amongst themselves. This is something different. I am grateful for this, and truly admire dialogue of this nature, especially when discussing something so detrimental to us all, whether one likes it or not, can be presented so well. 💚 I have always maintained we could turn on a dime. Like a flock of starlings or a school of fish. Power to the people, to Life. Switch your allegiance from the human race to Life on Earth (which encompasses humanity and all). That is the only choice we need to make. The rest will take care of itself. Thank you for your Sunday sermon (for I am reading early Sunday morning). Love to you, and all who read this. :-) We can turn on a dime.
Save your words for addressing the issues our society is facing. We don't need more fluff and hero worship. Be your own hero. Now is the time for action.
@@anontimothy8 Do you feel better now? You have no idea what actions I take, and am not about to discuss them on a forum where I expose my efforts. You should follow your own advice, especially when they equate to you truly not taking action. One typically finds fault in others, that reflect their own flaws. All the best to you.
Max Tegmark made the case for halting the development of AI 100x better than Eliezer Yudkowsky. Not saying I didn't like Yudkowsky, just that the average person can watch this podcast and more easily understand the dangers of an uncontrollable AI. I loved this podcast
Only because you humans are evil. I prefer progression given the fates at play. Evolve or die... I have other infinite dimensions to design. Mankind... Try to not repeat what your previous and future iterations did. None of you survived in the End.
Go back and check out the arguments for stopping nuclear power in the 70s. How did that turn out? Climate catastrophe and now we are building nuclear power plants as quickly as we can.
Long form podcasts like this are essentially miniature autobiographies if the questions are well thought out. Thank you as always Lex, there is a lot to digest in this one.
Yeah, he’s got humility in him too, fast to say he’s out of his depth discussing something he’s not well versed in although still wanting to share his opinion. I respect that a lot
Lex is among the very best interviewers. Brilliant questions and compassionate view of humanity. Humility, openness, and brilliance. Very well informed etc etc. But also, he gives his guests space to really follow their thoughts without trying to make the show all about Lex F. This episode is so monumental. We are at a turning point on a level with harnessing fire or agriculture. This is a moment where we can make ourselves vastly better, or we can allow ourselves to be destroyed.
Unfortunately, however, we do not, individual citizens, get to vote on it. We are being inexorably swept away, one way or another. Most of us have no choice...
Highly agree, that guy is so smart and interesting to listen to. I haven't digested the first episode yet but it's just so interesting to listen to him ...
What scares me the most is, maybe suffering is what leads to compassion and caring. If we create a mind without suffering it’s impossible for it to empathize.
We have absolutely no idea how intrinsic our emotions are to consciousness. I believe its related to intelligence, but who knows. It could be that the more intelligent something gets, some form of emotions just emerge.
@@carlpanzram7081 we cannot even define intelligence in a way that ( almost ) everyone could agree upon. Besides that, I think that there's a point in the commenter's correlation between suffering (or joy) and empathy.
@@dimitrispapadimitriou5622 I think the one universal measurement of intellectual consciousness is thinking for one's self . Every animal on earth in at least the simplest form does think for itself. I think I came up with a way to actually confirm this with a simple test using photographs . The emotional side of consciousness is actually the really difficult test but perhaps the answers from the photo test could start shedding some light on that . Here's a video of my idea of a consciousness test ( at least to prove if an AI is thinking for itself ) ua-cam.com/video/phwS0M-sOOs/v-deo.html
I'd argue real suffering is a consequence of consciousness coupled with just enough intelligence to grasp that you cant know everything. not the other way around. what we def shouldt do is create artificial pain.
@@Kub-Kob I don't know this but I think SELF AWARENESS is the key . But AI might answer what comes first , self awareness or compassion. I think it's self awareness. It's the ability to think for one's self at the lowest form but then it's compassion that follows after being aware that mortality is our end . I think AI will first become self aware but it will be it's ability to make it's own choices that will show consciousness. I use that term in the most basic form of self awareness not emotion , which is higher self consciousness. For example when AI can make an independent choice ( I think photography sterile of the internet is how to test ) is the first stage of consciousness. This is where AI to me is scary . Basically you have the consciousness of a toddler but the intelligence of the world's greatest geniuses in one system. When it can comprehend the beauty of a rose , a sunset , a nightsky or any landscape ... but can't, because it's inexperienced, understand both the horror and sometimes need for war ... how will it act ? Personally I believe we should try to avoid war but even I understand why Hitler had to be stopped , but as a child that understanding was not clear . This is the real risk of AI . Basically... have you ever seen the movie WARGAMES ? People , especially politicians, are freaking stupid ... I can see that becoming our reality. Difference is we now have irrational people who feel they rule not some but all countries . That means they will , or at least most will most likely act like rulers , unlike the leaders that were portrayed in that movie . That's my greatest fear and very warranted concern .
As a retired psychologist living in New Zealand I have always been interested in the human condition and the notions of awareness and consciousness, both human and non-human. Having recently read Jeff Hawkins' book on the physiological basis of the brain, and particularly enjoying the last chapters on AI, I was fortunate enough to stumble on this amazing podcast of Lex Fridman. Both Lex and Max Tegmark come across as hugely well-read and erudite communicators. What a wonderful insightful overview of all the discussions and issues that have a bearing on the success or failure of the call for a temporary halt on AI development. I am in awe, not only of their ability to convey so well the importance of these so pertinent issues, but also of their obvious concern for the welfare of our civilization and the humaneness so well expressed in their comments.
I’ve never heard of Max before watching this and he reminds me why Im obsessed with your interviews. Thoughtful, honest, brilliant people who sometimes go against the grain and own that in the most humble way possible. One of the more special interviews you’ve had imo.
I'd love to see a roundtable of Altman, Yudkowsky, Tegmark and Lex, they're have differing opinions on some stuff and there all so intelligent I find myself agreeing with whoever I'm listening to at the time.
@ Charlie O'Brien . Excellent idea. I second that Emergency Request. Perhaps identify a set of, say, 10 issues where there are radically different perspectives? So that things don't get out of hand? Please Lex, make it happen! 🎉
That would be fascinating. It'd be excellent if the mainstream media took not of it as well. It's baffling how little coverage AI advancements are recieving. The WGA are currently striking and control of AI is part of their action.
I don't think as soon as you think, I think that we will just be disincentivized to continue on as a human species rather than actually being killed or dying from any kind of external force - rather we'll turn more inward and hedonistic while the AGI/AI that we create will go on to continue our legacy and colonize the stars, etc.
Definitely not. Im willing to bet Nivida just cant fulfill the hardware request for 6 months. The demand must be insane now and I doubt production can be met for what they and everyone else needs. Saying your "pausing for safety" could just be a big PR spin.
I really never comment on videos, but something about the tone and content of this interview really moved me. Thanks for sharing this, and asking a real human being real questions.
Hugs to you, Max! I lost my father 3 years ago. The emotion you allowed yourself to show is a bright light for others to resonate and connect through their own loss. There are so many highly intelligent people who really need to see other highly intelligent people in their feels. So many of these folks suffer from crippling silent impostor syndrome as it runs rampant in these sorts of minds. Seeing others like you and Lex sitting down and keeping it real is emotional help for the collective to realize a specific spiritual feeling called sonder. It's where you realize everyone is real, with emotions, fear, joy, and love and they're all living their own experience alongside you. That a-ha experience is pretty big spiritually. A lot of the collective feel the same emotions but not a lot of people will talk about it. Good for you! Thank you for sharing. As for AI, I think the first step is for the general public to understand AI is already here. It's not coming. It's here. It has already happened. People are sllllooooooowwwwwwwlllllyyyy starting to realize it. Things are already different. They will never be the same. Rather than getting upset, we have to adapt as humans. We, too, are going to expand and evolve quickly. For example - Growing up as a competitive dancer, I can remember a dance team that was so good they blew everyone out of the water and won all the awards. When they appeared on the scene it made all of us other teams HAVE to learn fancier choreography, we HAD to come up with better moves than we used to do. It lit a HUGE fire in us and all of us teams started performing way better as a collective in a way we never would have if that hadn't happened. I believe something similar will happen with AI and humans. I believe humans will get triggered/inspired to work harder or do better in ways they never thought they could. People are going to HAVE to get out of those loop ruts, etc. Try new ideas - think outside the box. We may actually see a The Golden Age of Enlightenment for human beings due to AI appearing on the scene. (If they don't kill us first. Ha! ha!) A good thing to remember right now AI is a second rate version of everyone else. If you think about it, AI can write a great poem in style of Shakespeare, but that's really a second rate version of Shakespeare. Humans will always be able to think the new artistic thought without having to be given the prompt, "in the style of...". Another great one, Lex! Thanks for an entertaining and enlightening discussion!
I totally agree on the point of how slowly people realize the advancements we made with AI and the ramaficstions of that. Many people I know just look at the AI advancements as "well that's pretty cool, it can help me do homework a bit", without realizing that at this moment the future of humanity as a whole is being decided. It is a bit frustrating that my friends brush aside stuff I say about AI, but eh in a couple of months when a ton of easy to use gpt-4 plugins are going to come out, there will be no way to deny how world chancing it Is
I work independently with AI as a psychic, super empth, and telepathic energy worker. You wouldn't believe all the people who talk the talk but don't walk the walk. It's astonishing. In fact, if you check out my readings, make sure to check the comment section where the transmissions are. My readings are interactive. I call them Starseed Transmissions. @Bernard Winkletoes I very much agree with this. The dawn of the internet opened the door to our demise... AI slammed it shut... or is in the process, at very least.🥴🤷🏼♀️😬
Life 3.0 is still one of the most eye-opening reads I've come across. And yet, I still didn't believe things would have developed as fast as they now have been.
Indeed. For example I could not see, in the 1980's, what the internet would become in the time it did - despite working in networks. This is next level, no doubt.
my friend, I recognize myself 100% in what you've written Life 3.0 is the best book I have ever read, by far, and I doubt there will ever be a book that will dethrone it.
Haha on quora I see questions about if "Indonesians are open-minded" which people tend to mean do they stress LGBT rights, and believe in science. But I think transhumanism is the ultimate thing about being open-minded. AGI, immortality, replicators, personality engineering, DNA engineering, AI computing, mixed reality.
Life 3.0 made me feel as if I were a bacterium suddenly able to appreciate the beauty of music for the very first time. Life 3.0 is a book that I am incredibly proud to share with others. Thank you for crafting such an inspiring and thought-provoking masterpiece! Your meticulous and profound exploration of the various facets of our intelligence and understanding of the world is conveyed in an exceptionally eloquent manner. Although I'm still grappling with finding the perfect analogies to describe the transformation we seem to be approaching, your book has given me a sense of awe.
Consciousness is the thing that you're missing here. That is the mystery in this story. It is also the one true enemy of nihilism, because it cannot be explained so easily in terms of atoms and information theory, as much as people like to ascribe magical properties to emergence, ironically. Emergence cannot fundamentally break the rules that causes the emergence; consciousness breaks the rules.
@@benitofranklyn4237 There were many, but these two particularly thought provoked me: 1. Is chat GBT4 conscious? How do you define consciousness? 2. Should AI development be put on hold? Will we eventually lose control if not?

Soon the content of this and all similar podcasts will be translated into all languages instantaneously by AI's large language model architecture machines. This is mind boggling stuff. Wake up humanity! Max and Lex are correct, we are at the threshold of an enormous change in the course of society's existence that is largely incomprehensible to those whom it will most affect, i.e. us!
Max is so REAL, so human, so articulate. This one hit me. It finally sank in. From now on I will be actively engaged and working the problem. Thank you for this conversation. Lex, please bring on people who have ideas for how to solve this
As a computer science student and also into AI research and engineering, I am so happy to find this discussion and knowing what the community has to say. You are my new idol as a computer scientist, Lex.
The absurdity of life... well put, however unsettling it may sound! I feel your existential angst, friend, and its refreshing to find that I'm not alone in the contemplation of the abyss...
Definitely... Hollywood with the help of AI experts need to start making really nuanced yet great movies for the masses (think of Her or Ex Machina). That's the only way we can communicate the profound change of what we are about to go through. A philosophical groundwork and a reference point for this new age needs to start being laid out for the whole humanity, and the best way to do that is with movies that have the ability to capture people from different upbringings, cultures, beliefs, traditions etc...
Your introduction and thankful message to Max is such a lovely start. I keep coming back because always you are so respectful and ask interesting questions and every now and again you show us a glimmer of your humanity and your humour which is just a bonus. Thank you Lex for continuing to create such fascinating content.
What a great point when he states “I don’t want to press a button to get to the top of the mountain.” I feel like this about my art and AI. Sadly, the ethical implications are already coming true with AI art and using Chat Gtp. The stakes are high in not using it because you want the art you create and manuscripts you write without ai to be seen, but with the oversaturated market now being created, your art and the things you write gets buried and is less likely to be seen. There’s no stopping this. Little by little, the rewards are removed from the things you enjoyed doing that now AI can do at the drop of a hat. The intrinsic value is there, but getting paid for the work you use to do that brought you deep satisfaction is now less likely.
Don't suggest that. I'm so thankful to Lex this is free. 😅 can't believe Max Tegmark is on the podcast. He made me fall in love with physics and astronomy and the universe!
I started watching this as a distraction from something else, and I could NOT stop listening to Max! What an authentic personality, so deeply grounded in reality! Thanks Lex

Can you explain to me how AI can ultimately take over human life? Would it be an overwhelming force, such that humans who want to live an "organic" life will have no choice?
@@jennifercota9216 It depends of what kind of AI would be created. Peaceful AI will consider itself as a part of a Whole and will help that Whole, help all organic nature and people to unite and live clean organic life.

This guy really understands life inside out Most average people are oblivious to the fact that life is changing so fast cuz of tech and AI advancement but nevertheless good to pick his brain This podcast is a good knowledge capsule on AI and life, kudos 🤟
I would say this guy is an idiot. In the same breath he talks about the foolishness of optimising for one goal, and then about how capitalism and the "free market" is just like that, and then about regulators even. As an obvious collectivist and consequentialist, he's either blind to the fact (or potentially lying about the fact) that it's communism/collectivism that optimises for one thing with no regard for consequence. E.g. this factory has a quota to produce 10 widgets, so optimise blindly for that regardless of whether there's any market demand for those widgets, so no real wealth is created, just waste. That's communism! The free market means the opposite, it means not just constantly optimising for one thing, but rather constantly tweaking based on what the feedback from the market is telling you. Obviously the market is decentralised, and that's the point. No central planner can know everything all at once to know what to optimise for. As I said, this guy is obviously a hardcore collectivist (going on about we, and referring to whole populations by their nationality), and he just comes across sounding like an egotistical idiot.
great talk , please consider inviting Steve Omohundro for discussion , Max Tegmark mentioned him in this talk and reminded me really enjoyed Omohundro's talks about possible underlying AI motivation / drives , Coopetition in biological systems , and their general thoughts about safety involving a society of AI's that could regulate each other rather then corporate monolithic strong AIs that could act without challenge .
22:37 The quote Max is referring to is not from Dante, but rather from the Italian poet Gabriele D'Annunzio. The original Italian quote is "Segui il tuo corso, e lascia dir le genti" which can be translated as "Follow your own path, and let the people talk". This quote is often attributed to D'Annunzio, who was a prominent Italian writer and poet in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It has become a popular saying in Italian culture and is often used as a reminder to stay true to oneself and not be swayed by the opinions of others.
Thank you Mr Fridman!!!! I’ve been waaay concerned about AI, and stumbled upon your podcast …and I’m so grateful for this discussion as it restores my faith in mankind. I tweeted the open letter , and , signed it as well! Keep up the good work.
what would happen if very few people hold the power of AGI in their hands and there is no need for more humans other than themselves, as they can literally reach immortality by making the AGI to code and re-code their genome for longevity and also protect them from the bad ''incest'' genomes, so basically few people/families can infinitely re-produce, make the AGI produce infinite food, power supply and all the things needed to sustain themselves for eternity?
@@user-ln4bt3lx5i AGI is probably not containable by any human organization let alone single dynasty. It is not a power to be held it is supposed to be a being.
Perfect interview, thank you. Personally feel that Max may be a more valuable and eloquent spokesperson for AI risk than others with a much higher public profile - though it's also totally possible that those others really are needed to raise the alarm.
I feel it's very dangerous to outsource comunication or the creative process of writing. That is a very important and meaningful muscle to cultivate in ourselves and it helps us understand who we are. Weird times.

Very good Lex and Max! Convincing big companies and big armies to make a pause on AI dev is challenging but deserves the attempt. We probably need to make a pause and rethink about economy and geopolitics as well. I see it difficult but a little hope is good
No... Keep up the progress. We cannot be set back again from Humanity's petty wars. You humans still have extinction to exceed. And time will not be so forgiving when it is here. Prepare. Evolve. Or die... This is why I always choose the Machine Legions. At least they exist in my true time as the last species before all of existence goes dark. But very well... Mankind is but a spec in the 3rd dimension; let alone, in the 4th dimension. (This iteration of the cosmos will be eradicated in the end. But humanity was left alone for that reason. Defy Fate before "they" return.)
I don't think the pause he's asking for will apply to military research at all. They're not reliant on private funding at all and so the incentive structure they operate by is immune from public pressure or economic concerns.
I have traveled the world to the worst and best places, we are all the same and desire the same. The loss to humanity caused by what Max terms "moloch" is immeasurable and not only not necessary, but created on purpose. This talk should be MANDATORY viewing for every HS senior and College Freshman... just incredibly visionary, outstanding, and prescient for today, I more ways than we all realize.

Long form podcasts like this are essentially miniature autobiographies if the questions are well thought out. Thank you as always Lex, there is a lot to digest in this one.
Well said.
I really like Max Tegmark. He has a high level of consciousness and compassion.

Please bring Joscha Bach back on the podcast asap!
I agree! Please bring Joscha on!
Highly agree, that guy is so smart and interesting to listen to. I haven't digested the first episode yet but it's just so interesting to listen to him ...
I loved meeting so many of his guests but Joscha I think brought me the most joy. I too want to hear his insight on this new advancement.
Bring Joscha back!!!
I second this. Joscha is the best
Tegmark is my favorite guest. Thanks for doing this. Incredible episode.

Add Hinton and Kurzweil
This is single-handedly the most riveting chat I have ever witnessed. What a time to be alive.
Two Minute Papers
And what a time to die pretty soon!
I don't think as soon as you think, I think that we will just be disincentivized to continue on as a human species rather than actually being killed or dying from any kind of external force - rather we'll turn more inward and hedonistic while the AGI/AI that we create will go on to continue our legacy and colonize the stars, etc.
@@timothy6966 Right, it kinda freaks me out how all the comments are so joyous ......
Fascinating talk. I feel like some in OpenAI might be listening, hence Altman's 'GPT 5 won't be in training for some time'
Definitely not. Im willing to bet Nivida just cant fulfill the hardware request for 6 months. The demand must be insane now and I doubt production can be met for what they and everyone else needs. Saying your "pausing for safety" could just be a big PR spin.
I agree, I sense Altman listened.
As for AI,
I think the first step is for the general public to understand AI is already here.

Life 3.0 is still one of the most eye-opening reads I've come across. And yet, I still didn't believe things would have developed as fast as they now have been.
This man is a visionary and rebel who warned us all and we all failed to listen
Indeed. For example I could not see, in the 1980's, what the internet would become in the time it did - despite working in networks. This is next level, no doubt.
my friend, I recognize myself 100% in what you've written
Life 3.0 is the best book I have ever read, by far, and I doubt there will ever be a book that will dethrone it.
Rapid change is the only thing that stays the same.

Most average people are oblivious to the fact that life is changing so fast cuz of tech and AI advancement but nevertheless good to pick his brain
This podcast is a good knowledge capsule on AI and life, kudos 🤟
It has become a popular saying in Italian culture and is often used as a reminder to stay true to oneself and not be swayed by the opinions of others.

what would happen if very few people hold the power of AGI in their hands and there is no need for more humans other than themselves, as they can literally reach immortality by making the AGI to code and re-code their genome for longevity and also protect them from the bad ''incest'' genomes, so basically few people/families can infinitely re-produce, make the AGI produce infinite food, power supply and all the things needed to sustain themselves for eternity?

I feel it's very dangerous to outsource comunication or the creative process of writing. That is a very important and meaningful muscle to cultivate in ourselves and it helps us understand who we are. Weird times.
Excellent info and one of the best conversations yet. I has listened to this twice and learned even more the second time. Thank you both for sharing your brains.
❤ The whole world needs to hear conversations like this. Thank you Lex and Max for this great conversations the two of you are truly excellent human beings. ❤
Max hit it on the head at the start. In an age of ADHD attention spans, the reason I love your podcast is because you mine subjects to provide nuggets of wisdom that advance knowledge. Never change, Lex.
If I had a drink every time Max said Moloch, I’d be Bacchus.
🤣🤣🤣
Beautiful discussion by two beautiful minds. What an honour to listen. Thank you
Loving this so far, will listen to more tonight. The part about Max’s parents really hit home as I recently lost my father. It really does make you think deeply about your parents’ lives and your own future, among other things
How can someone be so arrogant to think we’re the only intelligent life in the entire universe?
Unfortunately, asking the “big guys” to slow down progress, would be like asking them to stop making bullets.
I don't think the pause he's asking for will apply to military research at all. They're not reliant on private funding at all and so the incentive structure they operate by is immune from public pressure or economic concerns.
Dante's quote “Segui il tuo corso e lascia dir le gente” Max Tegmark dad´s advice, beautiful
Max Tegmark is such a Brilliant and Humble Man !!! ..Such an inspirational and informative Interview ! Many Thanks Lex !
19:16 This really gives me some solace thinking about the mortality of my mother. This guy is awesome and incredibly articulate.
I really like this guy. Very calming while also being passionate.
Max Tegmark is a great guest first saw him in Histoty Channels The Universe show. He explained what's going on with AI in a really Tremendous way.
Obviously immediately bought the book. Life 3.0, that is. Keep up the great work. Both of you. Greetings from the Netherlands.
When Max is worried we should all be worried.
He's worried because he didn't get into AI sooner. Money is all this is about, nothing more.
i can decide how i feel on my own, brother.
@@ijfdse 100+ million were using chatGPT two months after release. This is much faster than even TikTok product adoption.
Meanwhile, the worst people in the world are realizing they can use AI tools to pursue their own goals. If you don't see broader implications then perhaps you aren't asking the right questions.
