That United team was well behind Liverpool at that point; with no chance of catching up without the complete overhaul Fergie put into effect over the next few years. Also, we only lost 5 that year ;)
Pretty sure Uniteds points tally in 2nd that year [iirc 81pts]would normally have been enough to win the title only Liverpool just had to have one of those seasons

utd mostly had the top average whatever the state of team or football. all crowds since the prem have improved. plus many a time we could of had 70.000 in the 70s n 80s

Liverpool lost 2 that season and went 29 games unbeaten, which was a joint record until Arsenal went the whole season unbeaten in 2004.
