Graham Hill's NYC tiny flat #2 attunes L space to the moment

  • Graham Hill began experimenting with small space living in 2010 when he bought two units in a pre-war coop in New York City’s Soho. He ran a competition to redesign the first rundown flat, and the winners, Romanian architecture students Catalin Sandu and Andrei Butusina, created a moving wall and transformable furniture so the one room could function as three or four.
    He sold LifeEdited1, or LE1, a few years ago and began work on his second experiment in living with less, LE2, which he hoped would be more affordable and less of a white box. This time he and his team created sliding couch-cubes that can be pushed from room to room to add seating to a couch/dining room or to configure into a queen-sized bed. There’s also lots of felt to absorb sound (both on walls and as a dividing curtain).
    Ditching LE1’s movable wall - it didn’t block sound and was too expensive - the LifeEdited crew settled for an accordion door (it shrinks to one-tenth it’s expanded size and can fit into tiny closet in the wall). More often found in conference halls or schools, here the expando-wall divides the guest bedroom/office from the rest of the space. “When it's out it has the acoustic properties of a 2-by-4 insulated stud wall with drywall so it's very effective at sound insulation.”

    when i lived in NYC, my girlfriend and i always wondered why the hell the people upstairs kept moving furniture around the whole day into the night. it was such a mystery. now i finally know. it was so damn annoying... FYI, you're neighbor downstairs hates you.

      I had an upstairs neighbor who had sofa bed and every morning at 5:30 he would make it back into a couch and then slide the heavy ass coffee table back in place. It did not slide but screeched the whole way. I asked him to stop but he didn't so I bought a rubber mallet and every night when I got up to pee at about 2 AM I would beat the shit out of my ceiling with that mallet for a couple of minutes. 3 days into it the landlord came and said he complained. I told the landlord if he would stop waking me I will stop waking him. He never did it in the morning again. Plus that apartment had a train that came by at 7 am everyday and would blow its horn 3 times. God I hated that place.

      Yes, there are plenty of states where the cost of living is cheaper and in those places your SOUL dies because they are dead zones for the mind, even locals complain they want to leave but are too lazy or are too afraid of change to leave. There is nothing to do/everything closes by 9pm, crappy food, no culture, narrow minded idiots that insist that you conform or they tell you to get out. THe locals only activity is reproduction, creating little mini closed minded clones of themselves. Give me a Big City any day.

      @michellej7734 4 роки тому

      @@PhoenixBlade538 Wow you are stating the obvious everyone is aware NYC is expensive. But, for example, living in the Midwest just because it is cheaper can leave you stranded. Too many people fall for that trap and it is alot harder to get out of a low cost of living city and then try and move to a higher cost of living city. Not everyone can make it in NYC but if you don't you can at least downgrade there is no downgrade if you are already at the bottom.

    • @PhoenixBlade538
      @PhoenixBlade538 4 роки тому

      Michelle J Well, yes...that’s why I said I think we can all agree on that...My point was just that many people can be just as happy, if not happier, in other states and cities- big or small. Sure, some people may feel trapped, but others really like it. Maybe that’s obvious to you, but there are a lot of people who seem to believe that big cities like NYC are the end-all-be-all. Sometimes it’s just frustrating to see people stereotype anyone who doesn’t want be a part of that as being close-minded or unable to “make it”.

    Oh man, I loved the LE1 design so much.
    I also love this design. Personally I would have made both walls the same accordion wall, but everything else was great. It would improve on the already great acoustics, a much better facet of this design over LE1.
    I love the use of felt everywhere. Really adds to the design. The wall was fantastic. Stapled felt, simple, wonderful, and functional for acoustics.
    That table was great. I loved the last table especially, this one works very nicely.
    With the right design, you could probably even do 2 of those sections that fold out, one on the other side, to make an even larger table in larger spaces. You'd probably need to have some supports though, might be reaching that instability region, but it could be done.
    I would probably just sleep in that office space all the time lol. Not even taking the table down either. As you say, it's about keeping your body happy, not the house, the house doesn't care as much. It's easier to manage bacterial growths on the house than it is to manage ill health of the body. Much easier. Far easier to warm up than it is to cool down. if you are too cold, get active. if you are really cold, put clothes on, if you are dangerously cold, artificial heating.
    if you are too hot, you can't take your skin off. Just doesn't work like that lol. The less you need to cool, the better.
    I love the look of this bathroom especially. The texture on that wall, love that. That curve is nice. I love it when rooms have that sort of thing happening. Just so subtle and smooth. I prefer it over other things like the usual skirtings you see dividing floors / ceilings to walls.
    It's also trivial to clean. None of these edges where stuff can gather and solidify.
    I love seeing your ideas. I look forward to seeing more from you in the future.

    So many great ideas & such an improvement on apartment one. Others seem to think it's a lot of changing & moving stuff around but on a daily basis it's just pulling the Murphy bed out & pushing it away again. Most changes are if you have guests & that always involves a bit of work even if you have dedicated guest rooms. Very livable space. Even the wet room would only take a quick wipe over after use just like any shower cubical would. A wooden slatted mat would mean a dry place to stand almost immediately. Love the attention to sound issues.

    Loved this. Loved the bathroom most. Very European. A friend of mine on Central Park west built a tiny bathroom in her kitchen, at the end, next to a tiny breakfast nook, with an invisible, heavy door. It had a little pie shaped sink in the far left corner, a round accordion mirror the was handy to the shower, in the middle, toilet under the window, to the right, which had a large area under it that hid the plumbing down below, so the toilet tank was hidden...just a chrome handle to flush. The shower head also had a hose attachment. The whole bathroom was white tile, with w blue& green row for color, at chair rail height. Reminded me of a swimming pool. You could hose off the whole room after. It was GENIUS, for the kids. It was actually a big apartment wth a room for the two boys off the kitchen..a huge master suite, with an enormous sunken living room facing two streets...and when they had a daughter, they built a nursery in the 2nd huge foyer closet! Bed waist high, clothes hanging below, with toys, a rug, etc. a soft paper lantern. Clever use of space. Across from Tavern on the Green...so they had Central Park..a terrific place to play...but also an enormous roof garden. New Yorkers use space well. It's worth it to live in the best city in the world! Thanks for the tour.

    I bet the bathroom sink, mirror, basin and work surface get soaked during a shower, you'd probably have to wipe it down afterwards. The floor of the bathroom would be wet for a while too, meaning you'd need a mat outside of the door to wipe your feet when leaving. No socks in the apartment! Apart from that the rest of the place is pretty cool. The bathroom needs more work.

Also thes shower is too complicated, if only he put tiles all over the bathroom nothing would be stained and there would be less chances of moisture on the walls, and shouldn't at the bottom of the bathroom be a drain? They could smash one side of the wall and creat little window for letting the humidity get out. One more thing they would need to modify would be the part around the door sothe water doesn't leak out

      Washing machines are not allowed in many NYC apartments (even if you own it). They often have old pipes and water systems that cannot handle if 100 people had their own washing machine. That being said, most people in NYC don’t have dishwashers either, and the only ones that do use them as storage. everyone I have known that lives in the city also uses their oven as storage too- I wondered why until I went shopping my first weekend living in NYC, and realized that I could buy grilled chicken from the diner for $10 for a couple pounds precooked, or spend $8/lb for raw chicken breasts....cooking is not cost effective.

    Is the felt great for noise canceling? I used white sound to cancel out unwanted sounds.

    Why make a small apartment even smaller by dividing it into many tiny spaces? Very claustrophobic. Knowing NYC laws, I ask myself, Is it legal? Maybe to live, but for sure not to rent, rooms are not large enough to afford space for more than one person (NY Square Footage Laws Per Person).

    • @okashi10

      Sometimes having separate living spaces for different activities is more comfortable for some people, especially when it comes to tiny apartments and studios. Maybe they prefer to have a separate "office" to do work, rather than feeling like they're living in one giant bedroom. Different strokes for different folks.

    • @Hondasmama2005
      @Hondasmama2005 6 років тому

      I'm sure there's way worse apartments then this.. My friend's cousin's sister and brother in law were in a small ghetto infested apartment in a very nice part of NYC... And rent wasn't cheap. They were forced into taking the first place they saw because thier previous landlord decided he wanted to sell and didn't want any tenants so the new owners could fix up the apartments if wanted to.
      They ended up talking to new owners and asked if they could have those old apartment back and were able to for not much more then they were paying which was fine with them because it was cheaper then the rat whole they ended up being stuck in for 6 months...
      So having little things like according doors and whatnot isn't that bad compared to some hell holes they pass off as very nice apartments!

      @JJ21210 6 років тому +1

      carriebtc: (1) It's an open floor plan that allows for privacy (via the accordion wall and the curtain) when a guest comes over; he has arranged the apt. into function-related zones, which is different from dividing it into many tiny spaces (the latter implies hard divisions, such as walls or partial walls).
      (2) He's not turning the apt. into living space for 2 people -- he has an office that doubles as a guest room.
      (3) There's no way that he'd go to the trouble/expense of running a competition among architects, and getting publicity, w/o knowing the relevant housing laws (as would the architects)

    • @JJ21210
      @JJ21210 6 років тому

      @Time4Truth This apt. is probably *less* of a fire hazard than many because it was designed by architects, who know about materials. A small space isn't necessarily a fire hazard; in fact, of all my friends, the two who had house fires were living in large, traditional homes (more than 3000 sq ft).
