- James Caan stars as a one-time basketball star who remembers what it's like to have been good at something and finds the realities of life are tougher than those on the playing field.. Married to an alcoholic wife who's pregnant with his second child, he tries to run away from his has-been life and loveless marriage. Based on the brilliant novel by John Updike and featuring a superb supporting cast. Co-starring Oscar and Emmy-winner Jack Albertson ("Chico and the Man"), Arthur Hill ("The Champ"), Oscar-nominee Carrie Snodgrass ("Diary of a Mad Housewife"), and Ken Kercheval ("Dallas").

My Father in law chauffeured James around while he was making this movie in Reading, PA. George Pasko. He recently passed away. his Obituary is in the Reading Eagle online. He passed away last Thursday. I thought this was so interesting.

A typical James Caan character and story: too edgy to catch on with the general public, but played convincingly. He can almost make you like Harry Angstrom.
Recently released on DVD. Can't understand why this film is panned. I think it's fantastic. Discovered it on TCM. Agree on your assessment of Caan's performance.
