    In my opinion that package was the best when i served in Finnish military.
    Even that it says it is 24 hour ration we never had time to eat all of those stuff in 24 hours so people always had a LOT of leftover food after military exercises. After 1 year of serving i brought home about 10 of those packages.

      We always had either a field kitchen available, or the food was brought from a base kitchen. Only got one 24h pack during my service (almost 10 years back, so similar to this, not the newer stuff), and that was for an overnight march (which actually ended up being easier than a few 1-day marches). Then again... air force.

    Finns don't lose their mess kit: The spoon-fork combo goes in your combat jacket pocket, and the mess tin (three part) goes in your webbing pack. :)

    • @Finwolven
      @Finwolven 8 років тому +3

      Also, the hart-sport sports drink is usually poured into your canteen. One package makes just about perfect taste with 1l of fresh water, and gets rid of the 'bottle-taste'.

      Wait until you have to jump off of a landing craft, into the water, and drop all of your gear to avoid drowning. Trust me you'll loose you mess kit, spare ammunition, and everything else you have with you. If you're very lucky you'll have your rifle and two or three magazines, if you're lucky you'll make it to shore alive with just the clothes on your back, if you're unlucky you'll either drown or be shot.

      If you have time to pull the spoon-fork out of your inside breast pocket, you can't be really drowning. And yeah, I did the coastal stuff too, including water insertion. Though if you lose all of it, you're not bringing your ration pack with you either. So, a limited problem.
      Also, I'm not exactly serious at this, it's just that the argument 'if you lose your mess kit' is kind of similar to 'if you find yourself in combat buck naked and without a gun', as the regular way to pack your webbing gear includes the finnish mess tin, and, as I said, the eating utensil is normally in your combat uniform and removed only for eating.

    That "Kuuma kuppi" that you are referring as "drink" is actually more of a soup than a drink. Works as a drink too but the main idea of it is meant to be a soup, that's why it is kinda thigh. :)

    I'm surprised the Finnish Army did not transition to an indigenous-manufactured MRE but opted for the early 20th century practice of procuring off-the-shelf civilian food industry items. Now the Finns are eminently practical people. Given a small army purchasing ready-made, pre-packaged civilian food products would appear to be very practical and saves state funds on manufacturing a Finnish-type MRE.

      Depends greatly on the garrison. In Upinniemi, the coffee came out of commercial instant coffee machine, which was, as you can imagine, shit. Then in Pansio, it was actual pot coffee that was made by normal coffeemaker, and the kitchen people came in and filled the pot with freshly made coffeee. That was decent. although they probably used the cheapest coffee available.

    Nice! Brings back some memories... Still pretty much the same as when I served back in 2006, except they've replaced the canned foods and noodle packs with that bagged dry spaghetti stuff and swapped that godawful sugar & lactose free chocolate with kickass beef jerky. Almost exactly how I hoped they'd improve the rations! That excuse for chocolate was just bad, and while the canned foods did have the advantage of being good to eat straight from the can if needed, they took a lot of space compared to dry foods and weighed a lot.

    I have to say that Finnish Army rations aren't really MRE's in the modern sense. They're much more closer to a civilian MRE, since they actually contain very few customized "dishes" or food's as you have probably noticed. Most of the stuff there is commercial. Cooking meals out of mostly dry ingredients at the field is quite time consuming and takes a lot of effort, especially outdoors at a bad weather. I'll get back to that later.
    Also the food stuff isn't that well protected compared to all other "real" MRE's, so if your ziplock happens to bulge a little bit and water/condensation seeps in, the first thing that will go soggy are the cookie bar's (even through their packaging) and possibly the finnish "hardtacks" or Näkkileipä.
    If you've opened even 1 pack of these näkkileipä's , you'll notice (in the silver paper) that they eat up all the humidity there is in the bag at the first place after a while of traveling in a rainy weather. Good thing is that they give plenty of näkkileipä, so given you might be facing some hardship in making the fire, we used to spread shoe polish between 2 dry näkkileipäs and set it on fire from the corner. It give's amazingly long lasting fire making even wet wood to dry at least given you have sufficient cover built. And yes, i'm not joking about this. It's an old trick to start a fire by making Näkkäri (a nickname for näkkileipä) fire with shoe polish in-between.
    It's not a bad idea to throw in a big sealed silica bag in case you happen to have your hands on one, to get rid of the condensation that will come through the big plastic bag anyhow to keep all wheat products as dry as possible.
    Another problem with this MRE is that it contains very few (if at all) protein's. The Dried meat helps in that area a little bit, but overall this MRE is very Carbohydrate/fat based, so it will give you at least enough calories. Tastewise to the main dishe's i'd say, that the lobster soup probably tastes the best if you use it as a base for any Fish or such you might find, but again this brings to the problems with the cooking. We are given a huge heater (Trangia) that is clumsy to use, radiates heat and also makes heck of a noise out at the field. I wish the Finnish army would start developing MRE's with chemical heater's and more quality food with better sealing.
    After a long hardship at the field (or during), i would imagine it would be much more convenient that you could spend significantly less time cooking the food out in the field and eating it, than cooking it and risk getting exposed by heat signal's or stalling. A chemical heater, premade/packaged food would boost morale at the field significantly in my opinion.
    I know there are different type's of MRE's also in the finnish army (but not widely available) with a can of peasoup (which you can eat with a spork as it is) and other "ready to eat" ingredients. Still the MRE shown on this video is the most common one (that is given to all reservists and our special units spending time outdoors), unreachable from the regular food chain of the army.
    My personal favorites in this MRE is naturally 1) the dried meat and then 2) those näkkileipä's (hardtacks) with those little can's of goodness (ham and liver pate) that you just scoop out with the näkkileipä's and eat. Quick and easy. :P Just make sure you eat it all within the same day.

    You would be screwed with out your messkit but that is again one of the things you have to take good care about it :)
    We did use field rations we did have our basic messkit and sometimes a Trangia when i was in service and a every Finnish soldiers basic tool is a thing called Lusikkahaarukka
    Best thing is to use little less water on that blueberry-rasberry drink and mix it with oatmeal
    And maybe these new rations are missing dark chocolate bar that used to be on every ration and it was one of best things in it and used to have a liver patee also...
    But this did bring some nice memories of eating alsomost warm food in a heavy rain in middle of nowhere in Finnish forrest :)

  • @vksasdgaming9472

    Those have been in service for long time. Certain items (despite being good) did leave some unpleasant memories. Premade meals which were in tough plastic bags and were cooked with hot water were known as "suljusäkki" and one item which had shrimps in it was particularly hated. That package will easily endure for days as worst thing about military eating (for guerilla) was that there rarely was time to cook a really strong meal for yourself.

  • @0000ndy
    @0000ndy 8 років тому +1

    That package haven't much changed in 5 or 6 years. We didn't have beef jerky thought, which is sad. But we had a can of tuna and it was a good thing. And some ramen noodles. The best main meal was pasta carbonara and I still eat it sometimes as all of these products can be bought from almost any market in Finland. Except I'm not sure about that ham paté or pork paté, what ever it's called. It was reeeally good when you needed some energy fast. Just open the can and dip your crisp bread and after a minute you have the strength of a Hulk. I kind of miss those MREs and the forests.
    Also I don't think that the need for whole mess kit whit gas burners or those burning tablets is any problem. We will fight our wars in forests so we can always make a fire out of sticks and a soldier should always have his/her M.1910 Kochgeschirr (I believe its called billycan?) and a combination of spoon and fork (spork? we call it luha as spoon = LUsikka and fork = HAarukka). And you can fill your water bottle everywhere as there is almost 200 000 lakes.

  • @marttiasikainen8264
    @marttiasikainen8264 8 років тому +4

    Actually this is newer than I had. Back in the days we used to have a liver and pork paste, dark chocolate bar and cacao as well. I think, the meals were more soup based. I'm not sure is it good idea to have so much pasta in it. It's kind of lacking the necessary protein which keeps you going, but in other hand - there was beef and jerky in it.

    Its interesting to look at this because I know Finland requires military service or social work. I can see that its cheaper to use existing forms of food and could help moral. Another hidden plus is it helps the service members get an idea good idea of a diet and prepare them for civilian life after their service .

    • @Unknown1355
      @Unknown1355 8 років тому +2

      If you mean why we don't have dedicated MREs for the military, there is a very specific reason for that: size of the wartime army and maintaining production levels.
      The thing is also that FDF is build upon to stop large scale invasions against Finland. As such there is little point to produce MREs just for the military, as during war time the armed strength would go up tenfold (230k troops). That would mean that MRE production would also have to go up tenfold. The US or UK don't have to worry about such things, as they're build more on power projection and fighting localized conflicts abroad. Also the military forms small part of total population, as such even in war little percentage of food stocks are directed to soldiers, unlike in wartime Finland (most young men are at the front).
      By using civilian goods, you can simply transfer food that would normally go to inactive ("civilian") reservists going instead to the front line with activated reservists. That means you can keep on producing and importing the same type of food without having to do nation-wide diet change (besides more exotic foods like bananas, coffee or chocolate). During wartime MREs would look pretty much the same, same with field kitchens using civilian goods.

      Well we do have a class called "Home Economics" in Finland which should teach that stuff (and how to cook it, too). It is mandatory for all 7th graders and also a popular elective subject among 8-9th graders, even among boys. Also everyone has already been eating healthy lunches at school usually for 11+ years.

    Hey gundog... I was bored so I've been watching some UA-cam videos, a lot of the MRE ones, which I do alot, mostly from you guys from MREinfo. I so do enjoy watching them also a lot of the non-English ones can get me researching and before I know it hours have past and I have learned a lot!
    The berry drink caught my eye this time, since everything else I sort of know, Knorr is common and so are the breakfast biscuits. We'll to start to correct what a "Hot Toddie" is is typically a mixed drink made of liquor and water with honey, in some recipes, sugar, herbs and spices served hot like a tea or it can be regular tea spiked with typically whiskey. What you had is a hot cup of fruit soup of blueberries and raspberries (finnis: kuuma kuppi kiisseli mustikoita ja vadelmat.. Swedish[Blå Band is from] varm kopp fruktsoppa blåbär och hallon), which would probably been good mixed into that plain porridge!
    Blå Band makes a variety of soups, gravies, sauces and they have a line of outdoor/expedition freeze dried food used by several countries for their troops, you will always find breakfast porridges and cereals in the Swedish 24 Hour Meals. You can also find Blå Band soups and meals too.
    Oh yeah, what happen to the chokladdryck (cocoa)? It would have also been good mixed into the porridge too.

    You should try and pour just a little of amount of that blueberry/raspberry soup in that oatmeal to get the best damn oatmeal ever.

    You put sugar into porridge... If you ever wear a kilt, you will also wear underpants.
    The British Army usually put boiled sweets into it. Spangles. Or the revolting packet of apple flakes.

    2:55 is a blueberry dessert _soup,_ not a drink. Popular in Sweden, and in Finland apparently; though Finland has a Swedish minority population. (It's an official language in addition to Finnish.)

    BTW, this ration, if it didn't have the meat spread and jerky, would be a little carb heavy (for my taste, anyway). 'Upside? Finland can get quite cold, I hear, so anything that might add fat to your diet would be great.

    When i was finnish army (saapumis erä l/11) we don't get that Field Ration. We only get Dinner bag. In that bag was only breads and too many raisin box there was 8 box. Best was Lämmin Kuppi soup.
    Finnish army use Lusikkahaarukka when you on the field.

  • @jonespumppu
    @jonespumppu 8 років тому +1

    Nice video. That lobster-shrimp soup was universally hated when I was in the army :D
    These are more like "field training" extra rations. That is why they are quite heavy on snacks and only on commercially available products. I never had to cook any of those while I was in the army. Field kitchen was always handling the food.
    I think they have totally different rations for troops that are actually deployed somewhere (like UN missions in Afghanistan etc.)
    They changed the field rations last year to easier to prepare ones. To similar "just add water"- bags they have in Sweden. (+protein bars and coffee)

    We used to cook those things in Trangia. There's actually a different kind of ration which includes Blå Band Expedition meals, which IMO are a lot better, as you can cook them in their own bag and don't have to mess up your trangia etc. I'll check my local store tomorrow and see if they still offer them. :)
