I'm a huge Steely Dan fan, and own their entire collection. And I'd have a hard time explaining why this is my absolute favorite tune of their's. But it is. Never thought I'd see a reaction video for it, though. Thank you!
Listen how Anti-Dance this song is - the rhythm changes so often but it begs for singing along. The end of the '60s was full of anti-Dance songs - and the '70s coming of Disco was in retaliation for that. But this whole Album Rock movement was meant for listening and this was accepted as a flattering notion by the artists - "We think our audience is smart enough to only need to listen."
I don’t think anyone from Steely Dan to Stevie Wonder ever made music that was meant for a certain set of high minded people to enjoy. If you know anything about Becker and Fagen you would know they always used cryptic lyrics. Even when they were writing for ABC.
LOL yes I'm catching up on all your Steely Dan reactions! Interpreting their song lyrics is always tricky, but I always thought this song was about some kind of robbery gone horribly wrong (the protagonist is imploring his dying buddy Michael to "turn that heartbeat over again").
As I grew older, I came to realize how many of these songs dealt with, shall we say, criminal enterprises. The album cover is not a coincidence. But I love it no less, maybe even appreciate it more.
I agree with you. Every song on this album is great. And although I know I'm in a minority, I rate it their best for two reasons: a) because there's more emphasis on melody than subsequent efforts, & b) because, via a series of moral scenarios, it makes a profound statement on life: namely, that things are constantly turning, but nothing really changes.
They were talking to you ...enjoying your responses a lot. Thank you. (Michael Kathryn Murphy) AKA: Michael Katy in school. Name of my child. One of my favorite names. She's the bride in my profile pic.
Todays music is a nothing burger, when was the last time you heard a memorable melody, I was in a bar in Bali, all the young kids were singing to all tehe old tunes ok sing a Justin Bieber song CRICKETS

This is my favorite too. Ever since I heard it it’s been my favorite. The harmonies and lyrics get me every time.
Steely Dan's production was always top notch.
That ending. It gets you every time. The harmonies will catch you with every listen.
Lovely song full of sunshine and warmth 💫
I think this cryptic lyric was an early indicator of what would come later. Your reactions are great, lol
Musically, too. More sophisticated chord changes.
Just heard this song today. Very good
Playing this song on accoustic guitar was always such a great accomplishment, due to the many chord changes.
Hand cramping!

God I hated fucking disco music. I was a rocker. That pansy ass shit sucked.
When Aja came out I was already a fan, living in waikiki and dancing almost every night. Still, the entire SD catalogue was never out of rotation.
Hey Michael, I'm enjoying this journey with you. Love it!
I love your breakdowns!! Only good Producers can do that!

Even though I'm not a fan of this album, it's still a great debut and still better than most albums regardless
