The live version of this on the boxed set (from a show in Santa Monica) has the funniest damn intro by this dude who is clearly stoned out of his gourd.

Following the teachings of the holy ones On what is written in the sutras, tantras, and commentaries, I set out these thirty-seven practices of a bodhisattva For those who intend to train in this path. Because I have limited intelligence and little education, These verses are not the kind of poetry that delights the learned. But because I relied on the teachings of the sutras and the revered I am confident that The Practices of a Bodhisattva is sound. However, because it’s hard for a person with limited intelligence like me To fathom the depths of the great waves of the activity of bodhisattvas, I ask the revered to tolerate Any mistakes - contradictions, non sequiturs, and such. From the goodness of this work, may all beings, Through the supreme mind that is awake to what is ultimately and apparently true, Not rest in any limiting position - existence or peace: May they be like Lord All Seeing. Tokmé, the monk, a teacher of scripture and logic, composed this text in a cave near the town of Ngülchu Rinchen for his own and others’ benefit.
So smart. They were so smart. Brilliant, to go with studio musicians, mixing it up on every song, this is the right guitarist for this song, this is the right drummer for that song,. Just brilliant. Boa (as in boat), dee, sot (o as in shot, but no h), fa. Boa de sot fa.
Kickass geetar playin' fo sho! Love me some Steely Dan! Groove for days and world class musicianship! That's hilarious. I remember thinking at the start of the reaction...Oh well, at least he'll know how to pronounce it at the end...You just heard it pronounced 2 dozen times during the record, LOL! (bode-ee-sot-vuh)
This is a GREAT album, and still not their best. The best is yet to come. You've just begun to dig in to the gold mine of musical delights that is Steely Dan.
I remember being at a friends house one night in 1973or 4. We were blasted on Beer, shrooms and hash. My friend crashed and I put this on his big old stereo blasting. First listen. I still remember zoning on the cover and nearly hallucinating to show business kids and all the rest. Hella record!
Man I envy you. The amount of great music you’re about to discover.... the next album is where things really take off for Steely Dan. This may be their most low key album. Don’t get me wrong. It’s great in its own way, but Steely Dan, as we know them, hasn’t even really begun yet.
No, thank you, I was gonna drop more steely dan, but i stopped because, i guess i upset people for not being able to pronounce this song before i ever heard lol, but whatever. I have lots of videos in the chamber!
@DramaSydETV I don't know if you're familiar with Donald Fagen's solo work, but it's right up there with the best Steely Dan stuff. Oh, My Dear Sir, I IMPLORE you... hehe
Bo Dee Sot Vuh - Rock instrumentation - Be bop arrangement - Eastern Mysticism an ode to the American's post war fascination with the latter. Fagen would revisit this time and space on "The Night Fly" which, you could check out if you were so inclined.
I've got an old Les Paul vinyl that I haven't heard in ages. You just stirred a memory; I can hear it now. He used that sound with the Chester and Lester records, too. Yes, an homage to Les.
Oh yeah! You are right -- best in the biz, these guys and the master crafting in engineering. Try this- BO DEE (like Bo Diddley) SOT-VAH. Damn, we're glad you played this one!
All I can say is wait for Jeff Porcaro. Katy Lied, Parkers Band, double drumming with Jim Gorden. He was a 19 yo drummer that really brings it, a real talent.
Well done. I've have seen a lot of steely Dan reactors, and repeatedly asked them to do Bodhisattva. Nobody does. Thank you. Once again there are no bad steely Dan songs. Pr. Bode hiss sat va a person who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so out of compassion in order to save suffering beings. keep in mind these records were recorded at a time when big bucks was being made selling vinyl. Millions of dollars could be justified in the studio on production values, studio musicians, ect.
Not gonna lie! 🤔 First thought this was Joe Jackson off his Jumpin' Jive Album. 🤭 Was upset too when he didn't play it. Why I love Steely Dan Residency shows! A different Album each night! 🤯🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
For those who don't know, a Bodhisattva is a religious guru. Now....Becker and Fagen are from New York and therefore more jaded and cynical than the average rock musicians in LA at the time in the early 70's. This song's lyrics poke fun at all the major stars who were running around finding eastern religions and holy gurus to follow and then virtue signaling their fans about how philosophical and spiritual they were. Artists like John Lennon, Geoege Harrisson, Led Zeppelin (Kashmir), etc. Steely Dan saw it for the sill B.S. it was and made fun of it here. Awesome.
This is an OK song. Listen to the Live version from California with the Drunk MC!! Classic! Still Waiting on "Black Friday "! But I know you're going through their albums chronologically!!
They became a studio only band in 74 and lost some main players. Used studio musicians for their following albums, mixing either song by song or album by album. Then took a break thru the 80's, came back mid 90's and began touring again. Caught them in 2000 "Two against Nature" tour ..... finally after waiting since 72'.
This album was done when they hadn't completely gone to studio/session production, and is basically their "opening" rock and roll shuffle for the time. And yeah, hearing it live? MUCH better.
Funny we can be so choosy. Not my top either but I am such a Dan devotee that it's hard to bad mouth anything that was part of their larger body of incredible never-tiring creations.

This solo and Larry Carlton's solos on "Kid Charlemagne" and "Don't Take Me Alive" are some of the sickest in all of rock, jazz or fusion.
I'd include Jay Graydon's solo in "Peg". Has some back story as well.

I was.just saying to myself, the guitarist sounds like kid. Charlemagne... same guy, carlton, right?
A nice touch for a song about a Boddisatva is the strumming of the piano strings, twice. The ringing chromatic chords have a vaguely Asian feel to it. Those guys thought about every little detail and they had the best musicians imaginable in the studio. Their tunes grooved hard and always had harmonic surprises. One of the best things about this one is the ending. It reaches a great climax and the last chord is hit hard by everyone. But the last thing heard is the sustained ringing piano chord which lasts a little longer and hints at peace and enlightenment.

I set out these thirty-seven practices of a bodhisattva
For those who intend to train in this path.
Because I have limited intelligence and little education,
These verses are not the kind of poetry that delights the learned.
But because I relied on the teachings of the sutras and the revered
I am confident that The Practices of a Bodhisattva is sound.
However, because it’s hard for a person with limited intelligence like me
To fathom the depths of the great waves of the activity of bodhisattvas,
I ask the revered to tolerate
Any mistakes - contradictions, non sequiturs, and such.
From the goodness of this work, may all beings,
Through the supreme mind that is awake to what is ultimately and apparently true,
Not rest in any limiting position - existence or peace:
May they be like Lord All Seeing.
Tokmé, the monk, a teacher of scripture and logic, composed this text in a cave near the town of Ngülchu Rinchen for his own and others’ benefit.
Thank you, Guy
(bode-ee-sot-vuh)
good 4 u,every last one..i'm in subscribed...
This is a GREAT album, and still not their best. The best is yet to come. You've just begun to dig in to the gold mine of musical delights that is Steely Dan.
I have to agree with Phil about how you are open to different bands. Your reactions are great. I had never heard this. It was good!
Always enjoy your videos. Bo-dee-sot-va. Someone below gave the definition. End of this song is one of my favorite guitar solos of all time.
I remember being at a friends house one night in 1973or 4. We were blasted on Beer, shrooms and hash. My friend crashed and I put this on his big old stereo blasting. First listen. I still remember zoning on the cover and nearly hallucinating to show business kids and all the rest. Hella record!
Great Song my Favorite instrumental is "East St. Louis Toodle-loo...
Man I envy you. The amount of great music you’re about to discover.... the next album is where things really take off for Steely Dan. This may be their most low key album. Don’t get me wrong. It’s great in its own way, but Steely Dan, as we know them, hasn’t even really begun yet.
That is the best observation ever!! Yes!! To discover all this great music for the first time!!
Sorry, but how the hell you say this album or any other one isn’t top notch????
@@pepelepewlsu Oh it was top notch... but Fagen and Becker put up a taller post for the next one.
George Erhard Katy tried, I ended up halfway crucified
Thank you, man. Just thank you!!
Oh, My Dear Sir, I IMPLORE you... hehe
Steely Dan jams!
Look out. It's about time somebody did this tune. Headphones, definitely are the best way to listen to Steely Dan. Yeah. Peace
Bo Dee Sot Vuh - Rock instrumentation - Be bop arrangement - Eastern Mysticism an ode to the American's post war fascination with the latter. Fagen would revisit this time and space on "The Night Fly" which, you could check out if you were so inclined.
Were I to ride a Saturn 5 into low earth orbit, Bodhisattva would be on my headphones.
That's just about the most swingin' guitar solo I've ever heard - outside of actual jazz, I guess.
A lot of it sounded like Les Paul's stuff from the 50s.
Helluva track my fav part was the beginning middle and end
Wait until you get to "Aja". That album....man!
All I can say is wait for Jeff Porcaro. Katy Lied, Parkers Band, double drumming with Jim Gorden. He was a 19 yo drummer that really brings it, a real talent.
I went to high school with Porcaro..as well as David paich, and steve lukather..aka TOTO.
Duuuuude! One of my favorites. ..havent even clicked yet....i know this is good.
Such a happy, feel good energy song. Awesome to play on Rockband too. ;^D
You need to find the live version (audio) of this with the band being introduced by a drunken MC before they play this tune. funny stuff.
Yeah that was a live in LA...cuz he refers to "Santa Monica..." pretty funny and you can hear Donald (I think) laughing in the background...
If I hear this while I'm driving - watch out!
Show Biz Kids from Count Down To Ectasy is one of my all time favorite SD songs. I hope you react to it.
Baby won't you show me "The shine of your Japan. The sparkle in your China."
Songwriters everywhere were probably thinking" Why didn't I think of that?"
Please do "My old school". You won't regret it. Peace
Not gonna lie! 🤔 First thought this was Joe Jackson off his Jumpin' Jive Album. 🤭 Was upset too when he didn't play it. Why I love Steely Dan Residency shows! A different Album each night! 🤯🐰 #ENRGYZRBunny
just listen to the lyrics too
RIP Walter Becker.
I pronounce it as...Bode-He-Saht-Va.
Awesome.
Bo -D-Sot-Va

They became a studio only band in 74 and lost some main players. Used studio musicians for their following albums, mixing either song by song or album by album. Then took a break thru the 80's, came back mid 90's and began touring again. Caught them in 2000 "Two against Nature" tour ..... finally after waiting since 72'.

This is one of the (pretty few) Steely Dan tunes I find both boring and annoying.
I agree.
Herr Bönk ya it’s not my favorite either
This album was done when they hadn't completely gone to studio/session production, and is basically their "opening" rock and roll shuffle for the time. And yeah, hearing it live? MUCH better.
Funny we can be so choosy. Not my top either but I am such a Dan devotee that it's hard to bad mouth anything that was part of their larger body of incredible never-tiring creations.
