Great artist, best youtube artist out there IMO. His videos explain what he has done, and make you feel that nothing he is doing is something you can't do. Of course most of us aren't Mr. Gurney, we don't have his eye (or even his passion) for color, but he doesn't pretend there's all of these secrets.
I agree! James is awesome. However, he's much more than a "UA-cam Artist". He's been very popular & well known long before he started uploading his content onto UA-cam.
You paint "The stars on Earth" magically James Gurney! As well as every single subject you choose to paint! An awesome Painter , a fantastic teacher! Thank you so much!
If peonies would bloom all summer they'd be just as popular as roses. They have a reputation for being difficult. Just don't plant them too deep. They'll be fine. There are cultivars that are as big as dinner plates. Its best to enjoy them outdoors because they're usually covered with ants. Fantastic illustration. I'm really liking your channel Jim.
I've painted in all the major mediums except casein; this video makes me want to give it a try! Looks close to gouache, of which you are a master painter,...... and I've used gouache in the past,.. now doing oils. Interestingly, for all those great old Disney animated films, the thousands of cells were painted in casein,.. or so I've heard.
Thanks for your comments, Ron. Casein is the oldest paint humans have ever used (50k yrs old) but it arrived on the scene in paint tubes in the 1930s, and was beginning to be replaced by acrylic by the 50s and 60s. It was popular with illustrators in its day and I'm glad it's still being made.
Exquisite study of peonies! As for the ants, they really don't offer any "benefit" for the peony (or any detriment to it either, ftm). I'm a Certified Master Gardener through Cornell Cooperative Extension who is also a hobbyist oil painter of flowers. Irises I can paint all day; peonies are far too challenging. I have learned quite a bit from just this excerpt from your Flowers video! Thank you!
Il est un très grand peintre de paysage,il reproduit avec ses pinceaux et ses mélanges de peintures précisément des lieux existantes, toutes ses vidéos sont très intéressantes .
Hi James! Beautiful art as always! I miss when you used to paint with only transparent watercolour. I hope you post a new video, I really used them as inspiration. Cheers. -Will.

What’s the difference with painting with casein compared to acrylic and gouache? Is it a similar method and pigment? Also, thank you for painting my favorite flowers, reminds of how beautiful the pink color scheme is.
This may be sort of a strange question: I noticed the little 'cushion' part of the clamps that you use to hold the sketchbook in place, you put them on the outside of the grip. Doesn't it put dents in the paper that way? I use the same clamps that you do, so it made me wonder... Thank you so much for the extended sample, by the way!

@@JamesGurney Nice prehistorical info, thanks!! I guess if casein was good enough for Og and Korok, it is good enough for me!! LOL. :D
the other thing I love about these videos are the casual mentions of history, art history, and art philosophy .....

Very interesting video. Question: how do you keep your gauche from drying out, painting outdoors?
Amazingly done... Beautiful! Love your videos
I kept thinking, “Beautiful! It’s done!”
ok you do amazing work on the regular but this is just straight up sorcery.
Thank you. I want to paint in the garden now. :)

What brand of color lead is used in the video

So impressive
so beautiful
How much is too much. Where to decide its complete?TIA
Could one use gouache vice casein? Is there a reason you used casein? Thanks
cool video, love the results, but can someone tell me why does every artist call magenta cool red?
Inspirational
Maybe write a book on casein/gouache painting? :) Hint hint nudge nudge
thank you

Matthieu You're right I often forget to swing those little pads around. My mistake - I'm just juggling too many things.
When I saw it in the video it really bugged me, so I had to try it myself... :)

Cabbages must have been very small during Marco Polo's time!

Do you think Marco Polo would go back to China today. 😂
