Just when I thought i'm going through art block again, here he comes saving the day, I feel inspired now! Thank you James, for everyting you do for us! Also, WOW 7:23 ! 👏🏻
James, you can take the most boring picture and make it a work of art. I have seen you turn a garbage scene into a beautiful painting. That is a true artist. Some of the subject matters that you choose I would never even think of doing because they’re just so mundane but somehow the finished product is a treasure. I love your channel. We have common friends.I used to be an artist at Disney and fiends with Tony Swatton… And a bunch of animator friends from Cal arts and Disney. I still learn a lot from you as I’m never at a place where I think I know it all. Every artist should keep learning and growing. Thanks again!
It's always reassuring to know that no matter what subject you cover, I always, always learn something new from you and your videos. It never feels like a lesson though - more like just a casual chat between friends that emparts some long since forgotten wisdom that only the most knowledgeable and wisest of sages has held secret, only now passing this lore on to his eager and attentive friends, who sit in awe of his mastery and greatness. Thank you for sharing your infinite wisdom with us lesser mortals.
This is why I love watching your channel.. entertaining with simple lessons like todays: Pushing yourself and experimenting to broaden your experience is key to becoming a better artist.
Love using Holbein acrylic gouache. I underpaint with acryla gouache, opaque paint with Windsor Newton. Gouache was so difficult to master in my Junior year of Art School, you took the frustration and mystery away and made it accessible in plain language.
Mr. Gurney you are so dam Awesome❤ I love that red underpainting idea. I can't stand looking at the White paper so I usually underpaint👍 so I can stop stressing 😂just never thought about red before. Smooth you are such a good boy😁 thank you so much ❤
I know this comment has nothing to do with the video but I just wanted to say thank you so much James for making the Dinotopia series. It was a massive staple of my childhood and I am rediscovering it again in my 20s! I have so many fond memories of the pop up book and looking through the copies of The World Beneath from the library!
Makes me think of a reverse verdaccio technique. x) I don't think I would have thought of doing a painting this way. It's lovely, thank you for the great video!
I've been working with watercolor and I usually end up bringing my work to opaque. When I see your work it makes me think that might be the right route because it's quite wonderful. Smooth was looking smooth.
Beautiful as usual, James. Looks like it was real hot outside though, does that make it difficult painting or does gouache not struggle as much as acrylics?
Any water medium-watercolor, gouache, casein, and acrylic-dries super fast when the weather is hot and dry. If you want to slow drying time, a diffuser helps to shade the sunlight. Also you can use a water spray mister, or a blending medium. You have to think faster in the desert.
Awesome painting as always, Master Gurney! I bought myself recently some casein paints you use. I'll try to paint casein now. I'm so excited to paint it, can't wait for them to arrive. I'll try to use them for impressionism, because gouache doesn't work as good as oil and the tubes are too small, goes away pretty quick. Here where I live we have dry season and I'm quite alergic, it gets very difficult to paint oil this time of the year for me. Yet, I like painting oil impressionism a lot, so lets see if casein works too. I'm really in the hopes. And also seems like I'll have to gesso the canvas if I want to paint thickly casein there for avoiding cracking when it dries. Regards!
Another great painting and tutorial! I was wondering about the angle at which you hold your colors… Does having a more extreme angle versus keeping them horizontal help you to pick up the right consistency of paint on your brush while the more watery paint rolls down?
James we have loved watching your paintings on youtube. I want to buy the truck painting....it's sooooo cool. Do you ever sell your little paintings? I've looked online but cannot find anything. Maybe you don't sell these little gems. I wouldn't blame you! But I sure would like to try and buy one. You have been a great inspiration to us to continue to try and paint. Thank you. : )
hey james, huge fan! i was wondering if you sell any of these paintings anywhere. i love these outdoor scene you do and didn't see them anywhere on your website. sorry to interject commerce in to art if it's not wanted, just love your work..
Hello mister James Gurney from a fellow painter. I'm a landscape and animalist painter from Poland. I have been using most of the techinques that the world can offer. For some reason the last one on my list is gouache. Can't wait to go into the fields and woods and become one with nature, paint and myself. I absolutly love your sketches. No grudge but i think that you are better in water based paints than in oils. It's the same case with me actually. I have a question to you. Do you use this wonderfull sketches to create bigger pieces, like many masters of landscape painting before ( Issac Levitan, Arkady Rylov, Józef Chełmoński, Edward Hopper, etc.)? PS. I don't know if you post about this painters on you'r blog but i recommend : Jan Stanisławski, Ferdynand Ruszczyc, Henryk Szczygliński, Józef Chełmoński. You may be interest in them. I really appreciate that you are showing that there is no disconnect between art and science. Best Regards
Do you know what you’ll be painting before you do the under painting color & choose color based on knowing what you will be painting? Or do you randomly choose an under painting color and then find a spot to paint and work with it?
You could preserve the pure white highlights by painting around them, and tone the rest, but if you use transparent watercolor over it, the priming color would influence everything.
Just when I thought i'm going through art block again, here he comes saving the day, I feel inspired now! Thank you James, for everyting you do for us! Also, WOW 7:23 ! 👏🏻
Your art is so beautiful
It is truly a gift to watch you paint and listen to your thoughts. Thank you!

I love the idea of adding 'visual hot sauce' to a painting! Excellent demo James.
Love the term "visual hot sauce." Will use that.

I never would have thought of using a red undercoat, but it's very effective. Thanks, once again, James, for making me think outside the box!
t might please you to know you are one of my top 100 favorite people that I never met.
Thank you for all the lessons
I've wondered about the uses of painting an undercoat! Thank you so much!
Amazing painting as always, really liked the artistic paper subtitles at the beginning!
Wonderful painting, And good to see smooth yet again :)
Today is a good day...because you posted a new video! Thank you!
Love using Holbein acrylic gouache. I underpaint with acryla gouache, opaque paint with Windsor Newton. Gouache was so difficult to master in my Junior year of Art School, you took the frustration and mystery away and made it accessible in plain language.
I love this one. And, hey, didn't know they had railroad cement trucks... cool
Marvelous

Amazing work sir
I tried this myself after hearing about you and your method through the grapevine. Fantastic results!
The under cost of red makes me remember hot days in the South with all that red clay.
I love all your practical effects. They’re always so cool
Always appreciate your efforts and appreciate seeing you work James!
Awesome demonstration, very inspiring and educational. Thanks so much for all you do. Blessings and take care.
Very enjoyable demo!! So calm and inspiring 🙂
Hvala!
Thank you for the donation!

Lovely technique! Suprising as always. I walk away from your videos looking at my surroundings differently. Thanks, James.
So beautiful
your dog is so adorable

Thanks
Thank you, that's very generous of you.
Absolutely loved this!! ❤️
You forgot the most important step: to let the air out of the tires on the truck so it doesn’t drive off before you’re done.
Amazing, as always.Thank you for sharing.
Please upload some cow painting video, like the one you showed in this video
a red underpainting is great for skin tones too, helps create a subsurface scattering effect

Golden's Open Acrylics hold up great even in really hot weather, probably still need to have a fine misting bottle though

Always amazing!
Hola James adquiri tu libro color y luz y tambien gouaches y casein. Saludos de Chile
Wonderful, as always. :-)
I love an under painting, though I usually do it with very watery gouache to sort of stain the paper.
Awesome work Sir❤👍
Awesome…thanks Mr. Gurney…
Your dog is so cute 😍
Smooth has a Dept of Art patch also!
Amazing!

Disfruto mucho sus videos, gracias por compartir 👍✌️
I love that James celebrates AMERICANA! I learn so much about painting - and small town life!
❤️🤍💙🇺🇸🙏

Love it!!! So good as always!
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 James, you are brilliant, respect ✌☮
I recognise that voice! Jim at the start is the same guy who pushed trolleys in the 'painting the American flag in the car park' vid way back.
More vids on opaque paintings, please.

do you have any tips on adding details to paintings?
7:08 there's a portrait of someone accidentally made under the brush.
could that be comrade stalin in blue?
Do you know what you’ll be painting before you do the under painting color & choose color based on knowing what you will be painting? Or do you randomly choose an under painting color and then find a spot to paint and work with it?
More the latter. I usually have two or three different priming colors prepared in advance and choose one on the spot when I start a painting.
where your from james
If you preserve the white, would thus work in watercolor?
You could preserve the pure white highlights by painting around them, and tone the rest, but if you use transparent watercolor over it, the priming color would influence everything.
Spicy!
Good
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
