I love KISS. They are my favorite band, and I couldn’t be any more disappointed with how they handled this. They didn’t even seem like they cared and then just plugged some stupid hologram show at the end. It didn’t even feel like an ending. Here’s one thing that AI and avatars can literally *never* replace. The first concert I saw was the Smashing Pumpkins on the Mellon Collie tour when I was a kid. The lights went out, the place erupted (which was almost panic-inducingly awesome) and there they were. The band I’d only seen on tv and listened to in my headphones. They were there to spend an evening with several thousand like-minded people from my area. There’s nothing like that, dude…I get that abba voyage was a crazy spectacle but it doesn’t beat the “all is right with the world” humanity of a unique live show, being played for YOU.

If you think back to what could have been your first purchased KISS album, KISS Alive, you have to acknowledge that it wasn't really a live album. When this information became public no one really freaked out because KISS was always about the attitude and spectacle versus artist integrity. The band wrote the book on live concert performances and this new era of KISS is geared more toward the fans of the future than the original KISS Army fans. I didn't care for any of the KISS avatar footage that I saw online but I do see in about 5 years or so a KISS tour that will be a combination of a rock concert, part Cirque du Soleil, part immersive video game. I won't attend because I'll always prefer having seen the real deal in concert but they'll definitely keep the franchise going for many years.

Singer has been in this band 20 years - but when he donned Peter Criss's 'cat man' persona that was it - a fraud. The 'genuine' KISS Army checked out in their final show at the Olympics.

The immortalised approach using AI decision is only going to be the first of many. They should be happy and incredibly proud that they will already be immortalised by what they have achieved over the last 50 years.
What we are basically now saying though is that new bands and new potential Kiss equivalents of the future who dare dream of having 50 year careers, don't even bother - we, the greatest bands of the past 50 years, are going to be around forever, and you are not going to be able to compete with it. This is the beginning of the end of authentic human made creative music.

That being said, these guys are in their golden years and the road is a lot of work… especially for their show. I agree that live music brings us together and is the most magical part of playing an instrument. However, in this particular case, I think it could work. They have always had this cartoon/superhero likeness that seems perfect for the “new era”, and will inspire new fans. I don’t think it will ever destroy live music… it’s just a tool to continue a legacy for new fans, and to keep giving to us old farts.

If this is just a one-off, yeah, I can agree. But if it goes on for more than one show, NO. If it succeeds, other bands will want to do it. Already bands are faking out the fans with half their show having too many unnecessary backing tracks. Not to mention the price they charge for us having to watch a not completely live show. I understand having backing tracks when there is a part of a song that needs the fill, but that's it. If you can't perform live anymore, just retire already! Especially if you have as much money as the members of a band like KISS. Then at least the fans can have respect for how great you once were. Most everyone gets older and cannot do the same things they once could. No shame in that. On the other hand, I wonder if I could get an avatar to go do my job for me while I sit at home on my ass and collect the paycheck?

you will never (or at least so far) be able to adequately simulate those massive explosions, fire bolts, confetti rains etc. etc. in virtual reality - and exactly those are a part of the kiss dna and make kiss different from other bands (admittedly, these days lots of band do stuff alike). kiss shows are something you feel on and under your skin.
i have seen abba voyage in london this year. it works for abba, but i don’t have the impression i have see them live. what i have witnessed is a well-done movie on a massive high-res screen, with real musicians playing in sync to it. the illusion was 99% perfect.
i doubt the kiss audience is large enough to get them making a pilgrimage somewhere to see something alike and make it a long-running commercial success. (but i am open to be proven wrong. maybe kiss come up with something even more advanced than abba has done.)

I will point out that this has been done already with ABBA. Kiss has the funds to make it happen at several venues across the planet (not just one as with ABBA). This will give an outlet for other bands to join in and have avatars of the classic bands forever. With AI they could have new Kiss Music even after the band members have passed. It is whatever the customer wants. I do think that you may see Gene and Paul again doing limited acoustic shows in a couple of years. The full make up live shows are over for Gene and Paul.

Was it "live" last night, with backing tracks? I guess depends on how you define "live music". I didn't think the avatars were going to just be things you watch at home, I figured they planned on doing avatar "concerts" like ABBA has done. I'm not sure how much appeal that would have for KISS fans. (I'm not one, by the way, but I recognize their place in rock history.)

  • @pneumanaut1
    @pneumanaut1 Рік тому

ABBA has done this (motion capture) - they have become avatars for their British show. I have a friend who went (and they were thousands at the show!!) and he thought it was amazing. No, it won't be the same as live, but it might be something completely different and fantastic in ways that the concerts at this point are not. (Check out the ABBA 2022 Voyage tour.) It saddens me that kids today will never experience that live show; but with this, they will still be able to gather with and join the Army and discover their music. KISS was a significant piece of the soundtrack of my life - from my years in the 1970s to today. I'm certain it is their last show in person - they are ready to retire. But KISS will live on, well after their final show last night. Paul said, "KISS is bigger than any one of us." Now, they can perform in multiple cities at the same time. They are full concerts, not like what you are saying. I agree - AI is coming. I'm interested that they are embracing it! I saw them twice in concert; grateful I lived while they were in the biz! (Mick Jagger, of 80 years old, is still performing. Watching his videos is sad. Very sad - he needs to retire.)

Not sure if this will be like the recent ABBA shows or they are thinking about something else. If it is just online or VR, I don't think it will go over very well. A big part of a Kiss show is the lights, pyro, explosions, etc happening live. When I first saw the video after the concert, I thought it might be a video game. I'm not crazy about the avatars floating. That makes it too much like a superhero cartoon, not a concert.

Thinking about the Abba thing, I thought for a while now that Kiss could do this one day, but do a 'realistic' looking thing like Abba have done, maybe reproduce the Destroyer or Love Gun shows, rather than the comic book type thing they're going for here. I suppose it depends what audience they're going for. I know with the Abba show, there are musicians on stage, and the music is live aside from the Abba members vocals etc. I think that Kiss might have chosen a questionable direction to go with this.

We went to see the opening band for KISS when wearing bandanas tied around everything, no makeup, and trying to get "back on the horse" as a Glam band.
The "Lick it Up" Tour. I think they still wore the boots, but "no makeup" was already cashed in, so no big deal. Gene still blew fire, which was really cool, and they actually surprised me with such a good show. Despite the Glam era, lol!
I think we went to see Queensryche, as the opening act, as it was our first time they played in our area.
Didn't go to see KISS(even though a huge fan since 9-10 yrs old). Starting with the "Destroyer" Album. A Masterpiece! Went to see, I believe, Queensryche, but remember the KISS show as clear as day!
Don't mind AI/Holograms, for those not with us, but KISS are really are quite the "grifters" of moder, live, music, backing tracks, and Auto-tune.

Their performance was awesome, but my experience was bad. So I said f**k that, I want a KISS show that I will remember fondly. Went to their Albuquerque show that same year and it was a much better experience. I agree w you! Kiss has been the band, the GOAT, all through my life, from first concert at 10, and more shows than I can even remember honestly by now at age 57. I did not do this "goodbye" tour, as I just would rather not deal with the drama of the goodbye tone. I DID however watch their Seattle WA show three weeks ago on a UA-cam members Full Show video, and let me say...they rocked about as hard as they ever have! They did a really great montage of their top music throughout their career, but I sure did miss "Strutter" and "Hard Luck Woman".
    But they did "Beth"...?
Anyway, you know Paul is going to turn 72 years old on January 22 right? It's my mom's bday too and I've known his as well as hers lol. But 72? Jeez Louise...why WOULDNT YOU RETIRE?? Plus, due to Paul being sick with the flu pretty bad, they were forced to just cancel the two Canadian shows... which was a really huge deal for them to have to do that. And no make-up shows planned.
Guess fans were very lucky that they got to make the New York final gig. I will not be into any weird VR shit...that's my grandsons thing, lol. But they will always be my first and longest and best R n R loves...they set the standard for my personal taste and and what a rock band should be, and what I compare true talent and success to. These guys are shameless in their business model, yes...but they leave their soul and blood on that stage for their fans night after night, decade after decade!
(Someone should google John 5's personal KISS memorabilia collection...lol!)
I will miss them just ...always BEING OUT THERE doing what they do. But I would so much rather see them "go out" on their own good terms, healthy, happy and hard-rockin!

Then he asks her "did u see show?" She says yes, it was one of the best. Then he asks " you saw the end? What'd you think?" (I'm slightly paraphrasing, but he meant about the avatar announcement). His daughter, with the ever so slightest hesitation, said " yea, that's great" She seemed embarrassed almost.

I saw it he looks like he's losing his mind he can't concentrate and babbling on and seems like he wasn't ready for the last show to end.

I saw them for the first time in Nassau Coliseum in 1979 as a teen then bought my daughter when she was seven to see Saliva, Kiss and Aerosmith at the Jones Beach Theater in 2003. Also saw Paul Stanley at L'AMOUR in Brooklyn in the late 80's prior to doing a Kiss tour.

They will probably tour as holograms like they did for Tupac. I'm okay with this after an artist is dead but don't think I would pay to go

I saw the ABBA show in London and it was amazing. It will not replace live music for me but this was something different, great experience. Love the channel.

Having participated in a live VR concert it actually can feel really good, you are close to the band, you can stand up and dance, you interact with the audience (on Pico 4)
So even though this business is like the new star wars movies, some young fans will love to have more despite the digitalization and the band will avoid wearing themselves out mentally and physically

ABBA has had an amazing Avatar experience in London for a year now. They built their own building and people came from all over the world.
