    I’m paying $90 for a bottle of this in Hawaii in 2023 and my feelings aren’t hurt at all. I would buy this by the case if I could. I’m not a huge scotch guy, but I do drink it. I think I like the Japanese whiskies better. I have about 230 bottles of whiskey in my collection, many types at a variety of price points. Some are quite pricey. This is one of my favorites, without qualification. Just a winner. Such a cool ride. 🤙🏻

    Just picked one of these up today. Been on a bit of a Single Malt binge since watching your vid on Scotch for Bourbon drinkers. My go-to store got some of this in and I took the drive. I was blown away by it. So complex and rich, balanced, round. Insanely good. I get honey, flowers, and smoke that just pulls it all along and makes all the flavors lassssst.

      Gets even more interesting each time you go back to it as it opens up. Great stuff!

    I finally pick up a bottle of this and what do I find on UA-cam? A Jason C review of it from vintage 2018. Love it.

    Tried it at my friend’s house a few weeks ago and was quite surprised as well. To me I t drinks like 43%, I couldn’t believe when I was told it was 51.4%. The bottle was already more than half empty, so I didn’t detect any smoke, but the complexity still surprised me just like you. Glad to see similar reaction. Will pickup a bottle for my bar for sure. Love the perfume-like bottle. One of the guests who doesn’t drink whisky thought it smells like perfume as well LOL.

    I just got a bottle 5/12/24 and I was blown away. Of all places, found it at Costco. $60. I am going back to see if I can get more. Incredible pour

    Great whisky, purchased a bottle the other day and shared it with my Dad. This reminds me of a Bourbon almost not a Scotch like most Japanese whiskies. It’s surprisingly sweet and smooth with a slight smokey taste.
    The taste is very floral, sweet, boiled sweets with vanilla - although it’s high proof this is a great whisky for someone new to whiskies as it’s quite easy to drink.

    I’ve got 6 bottles of 750 ml NFTB. Had finished 2 bottles. One of my favorite whiskies. I taste tropical fruit and very floral. I also taste slight candy bar.

    Picked up a bottle (500ml) in Alberta for about $50 CAD. I have heard there is a 3L Duty Free version. Pretty good stuff. Congrats on 100+ subs

      Thanks Peter. For me it wasn't really anything like I've had before so the different flavors surprised me as it was opening up. Definitely good stuff. Thanks for supporting the channel and enjoy! Cheers.

    Awesome work congrats on the sub milestone.Japanese whisky is next on my list to try. There is so much to taste out there. Never limit yourself to just one 👍

      Thanks quests! It's been alot of fun. Definitely trying to broaden my horizons. That Nikka straight from the barrel was legit! Cheers.

    Everything but the kitchen sink. If it ever gets to Florida, I'll try to up a bottle. Scott and Bart taught me a trick of wiping up a spill with your palm. Rub your palms together, then nose. Try doing this every 5-10 minutes, and note how the scent changes. Pretty cool.

    • @TheMashandDrum
      @TheMashandDrum  6 років тому

      Hey birddog. Yes apparently that's how the old moonshiners found out what was in their whiskey by rubbing their hands together. But yes this is a dram that evolves the more it sits. It's really interesting. Hope you can get your hands on one. Cheers.

    I would say it’s definitely good. I have trouble picking out all the different notes initially because of how strong it is, I put a drop of water in it and it really helped picking out flavors. I need to refine my palate more to appreciate the nuances. It is so different than anything I have ever tried. Nice review, cheers!

    • @TheMashandDrum
      @TheMashandDrum  5 років тому +1

      Thanks! As you sip on it, it changes over time too. So many whiskies blended in there. Cheers

      I also found that with Hibiki Harmony - at first, I was disappointed at the lack of complexity, considering the price. Then I added a few drops of water and it came alive.
      I can't wait to try this "From The Barrel".

    I appreciate you taking more than just one or two sips and giving us your honest first impression. I had the same sort of reaction last night when I tried this, and I was so excited by how different it was!
    I’ve never enjoyed scotch characteristics but, like you said, this could be a better primer for me to take on scotch. This is an older video of yours but still it’s a great one nonetheless!

    Absolutely love this pour & the Coffey Grain & Malt are also exceptional, prefer the Japanese & Irish Whiskeys to the scotch offerings.

    Jason, Good review. This used to be about $55 - 60 around here but only 2 stores have it. Now that it was voted # 1 for 2018 by the WA, they have jumped the price to $70. I have been enjoying the Nikka Coffey Grain at $63 but at that price, I won't be buying anymore. It should be more like $40 to 50. Way too many great choices under $50 out there to try and to keep drinking.
    Happy New Year and Cheers!!

    Did you try adding a few drops of water at some point? I don't usually prefer to add water, but, I was pleasantly surprised at what it did to the last Japanese whiskey I tried (Hibiki Harmony).

  • @ChristopherOSU

    Man this review is wild - what you're describing sounds even better than some $200 bottle of 20+ year aged Scotch - all the complexity and interesting notes. It sounds almost perfect.

    Jason, you may have already learned this but NFTB is not compliant with the new Japanese definition of Whisky. It is rumoured to have Ben Nevis in it which would cause one to think that it is scotchy. Cheers.

      Brother, it's all good! I have about 150 open, and it's just me and the wife drinking normally! Probably 90% of whiskey changes for the better with some air and time. Go into bottle-finish mode at the 20% remaining mark. It's worth it for both fun and flavor. Don't be afraid to have many open at a time. Cheers!

    I think that citrusy note comes from the Mizunara (Japanese Oak) aged portion. It was interesting to read about the different types of finishing casks they use.

    I love this whiskey and the square bottle is kinda cool but the neck and the cheapy cap degrade the quality of the juice inside. I have both 750 ML US versions and 500 ML European bottlings. Just a great whiskey. Its actually a uniques taste profile. I do not taste any peat at all myself. Cheers to Nikka!

    • @TheMashandDrum
      @TheMashandDrum  5 років тому

      Yeah that was early in my peat days. Lol. When I go back to it now I don't really taste the peat either. Cheers G man
