  • So in our new house, we have a very small backyard with no existing garden, so I made use of some styrofoam boxes and started a cheap and productive container garden using them.

    An aquarium store always has them for free. The fish comes in bags in these coolers and they dont smell fishy. Great for outdoor cat houses also

    I love everything about your ideas, my friend. I shall start the same but tomorrow, I shall cut the fish boxes each one into two parts, then, start my garden in spaceless spaces.
    Welcome to my house to be a garden master. I'm always single all alone. 🤝💛🙏 NE🇮🇳

    I love what you did, it looks very neat! Question did you have a sudden urge to get a haircut while doing the video? I had to rewind to make sure I wasn't having vision issues. :)

    I put my first stage of 1-2 weeks growth in unused pots and then pulled out some styrofoam boxes and am readying them for 2nd stage of the plants growth , i planted radish , 2 bean varieties and then a tamarind sapling and some chilli saplings, i am regularly watering the seeds and saplings, this is my first time gardening so i am really excited and wanna do more gardening as well in the coming year.

    Hi..I took free foam boxes from Pack n Save for my seedlings and cuttings. It's look dirty by time. Now I took the new lot to replace them. The question is how to get rid or destroy the old foam boxes.

    Did this thermocol won't destroy/pollute the soil?

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  5 років тому

      Over time it degrades due to the UV light form the sun, but I only use them for a few growing seasons. Haven't really looked into it a lot but as far as I know it won't affect the soil by much at all. Cheers

    I am trying to prepare a little box garden on my balcony but I am still unsure how many space the plants need. For example the pak choi you planted - is that enough space for them when they are planted in a box with so many other plants?
    Thank you and greetings from Germany :)

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Viviana, the pak choi I planted was a denser planting, so growth/maturity can be a bit slower. So for a styrofoam box like that could still easily fit 4-5 plants in there without compromising the growth of other plants.
      And with regards to knowing how much space between plants, it really depends on what plants you want to grow. It can all easily be looked up online but I'm more than happy to help you out if you have any specific questions about it
      Hope that helps you out Viviana, cheers and have a good one!

    • @Techpower888
      @Techpower888 4 роки тому +1

      Yes you can, but it likes to spread, so plant it in its own box, it also needs plenty of water. Good luck!

    I'm trying to figure out how to grow veggies in a way that the local critters can't get to them. Any ideas? I have, at least, four woodchucks (groundhogs) and some deer that come by for snacks.

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  6 років тому +1

      Oooh yeah thats a bit of a pain. We don't have them her in Australia but for the deer growing them in a greenhouse or closed off area might work. For the woodchucks you'd probably want to have a raised garden with a solid base underneath!

      JacobsBackyardGardening They'd climb it and then, there are the raccoons..... Oh well, I guess that's the way it is. I'm planning to try some hanging planters. Wish me luck!! Thanks!!

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  6 років тому +1

      Ah yeah it makes it pretty difficult then.
      Hanging containers would be great! You can grow all sorts in hanging pots!

    Does there have to be holes in the bottom? I live in a second story apartment and am unsure of how to make sure my balcony floor is protected, as well as all the car ports bellow!

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  4 роки тому +1

      You'd just have to be aware of how often you water, how much water would be in the bottom, how much water the plants need ect... just to avoid water rot. Otherwise you could possibly find trays to sit them on, or just make your own using black plastic. Hope that helps you a bit, cheers Elizabeth

    How much compost and trace elements do you use?

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  3 роки тому

      For something like this using as much compost as possible is ideal, and for trace elements I just went with the recommendation (per square metre). Cheers Amber, hope that helps you out! Have a good one

  • @maitegonzalez1261
    @maitegonzalez1261 4 роки тому

    Hi what are the trace elements you add please?

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  4 роки тому

      Its a general trace element mix, so it contains things like zinc, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, sulfur, boron, molybdenum and a couple other elements. But they're the main ones. Hope that's what you were after Maite, cheers!

    Whats the ratio for soil, org matter etc?

    • @JacobsBackyardGardening
      @JacobsBackyardGardening  4 роки тому +1

      Most of it will be organic matter because its mainly potting mix, which is technically not a soil so it will all break down eventually. But its probably around a 1:10 ratio (as a rough guess). Hope that helps, cheers & have a good one
