Hi Billy, I'm reviewing this lesson and I've noticed something that I do not understand. For sound change rule #3 at 6:23 you listed 읗 as an example of when the 2nd syllable begins with any of the following 5 consonants (ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ,ㅅ,ㅈ) the 2nd syllable's consonant becomes pronounced as a double consonant. However, I remember learning from sound change rule #4 at 9:49 that the regular consonant that comes before or after ㅎ becomes pronounced as a strong consonant (ex. 좋다=조타 and 많다=만타). So I'm confused about 읗. Is that a special exception? And do you have an example of a word/term with 읗 where the 2nd consonant will be pronounced as a double consonant? Thank you :)
Nice catch! I should've double checked those examples. Since it's been a while I'll probably leave this video as is, but if someone ever finds another typo in it I'll re-upload it to fix that.
As a korean, I’ve never seen the letter 읗 in korean except the word ‘히읗‘. So don’t worry about that cause you can hardly encounter that problem😂 So when you speak ‘히읗‘ with postpositions like “히읗도“ ”히읗과“, you should pronounce like “히읃또“ ”히읃꽈“. However when you pronounce “낳다“ or “좋다”, you should pronouce like “나타“ ”조타“. 읗 is a special exception
Honestly, the whole "this will happen naturally" is the only thing that kept me going through this without breaking down crying 😭 although I normally do overthink these I'll try not to stress as you advise. Thanks for the amazing videos!
Don't be afraid to go back and review. Also feel free to slow things down. You don't have to do multiple lessons a day. You can do one a day, or 3 a week, or whatever you're comfortable with. You can also watch the video more than once - try one time in the morning and one time at night.

I first watched this video more than a year ago & remember I was completely overwhelmed, but I decided to revisit it now because I still get messed up by ㄹ sometimes when it bumps up against certain other sounds (usually consonants, but I also have a lot of trouble with ㄹ when it bumps up against ㅛ/ㅠ/ㅕ/ㅑ for some reason), so I decided to revisit this video because I remembered you gave such great, detailed information. I'm amazed how much of this has become completely second nature to me now, when it seemed so random when I first started learning! Anyone watching this who is new to learning Korean, listen to what Billy says at the start: It's good to know that these sound changes exist, but don't worry too much about fully understanding them or memorizing them! They'll come naturally to you as you have more experience with the language, but just knowing that this sort of stuff exists will help you to avoid panicking when some stuff doesn't sound the way you expect it to. Fighting!
I've been watching these for only 4 days and already learned pretty much the entire alphabet and their pronunciations and was like "Wow this is so easy! I'll be speaking Korean in no time." And then I watched this.
Same, I started learning Korean recently and after memorising the whole alphabet system I was kinda proud that I did it, I thought it wasn’t that hard and thennnnn… *sound change rule enters* 😭😭
As I was learning Duolingo, I noticed that the ㅂ was being pronounced as an ㅁ, and I was like what's going on in here! I picked it up and started pronouncing them as an ㅁ along the way. But thankfully I know that it's a rule and I'm not crazy Thanks!!! Will be studying these soon
Just thought I'd share: this is my 4th time repeating the videos up until this one and they all really make sense now! Just keep repeating them till they make sense and they will eventually :) x
After learning my first foreign language fluenty I learned a simple, yet extremely important lesson. When you are really serious about learning a language, and you come across something you can't understand or say, just relax, practice, and let your brain do the magic for you. You eventually get these things, like, for real, no need to be desperate or something.
I've been trying to study Korean from different apps for the last two months... then finally came across these amazing lessons that made all the mess in my head make sense! Even though this lesson was kind of overwhelming, I'm really grateful for the encouraging messages you gave... I'll do my absolute best to be consistent and improve day by day.. Thank you so so much Billy! :))
My confidence in learning Korean really took a blow from this lesson because of how frustrated it made me but I think I'm learning it now, just a bit though lol. Thank you Billy! If not for your videos I probably would have stopped here when learning Korean. I'll stick through this :)
I finished the 'learn Hangul in 90 minutes' video, and it was great, but I've been needing to re-watch the last 30 minutes of it repetitively for the following 2-3 days because I just couldn't keep all of the sound change rules in my head, so whenever I came across a sentence that I was excited to read (and thought I could read easily), Id have to take a minute and wait and go through every syllable making sure to check to see if I have to apply ANY sound change rules. and doing that really wears you down. I'm only 10 minutes into this video but I had to pause and write this comment down. In 10 minutes this video is already helping me more than, re-watching all the Sound Change Rule chapters 2-3 times over, thanks to the more detailed and comfortable explanations. THANKYOUUUU p.s also seeing you stand there physically is more captivating and makes it easier for me to listen and focus as to what you are saying, rather than looking at a blank screen with just some animated letters and audio. Thankyou again. - hope you see this comment some day : )
I'm really happy that these lessons are for free. Please don't delete them soon. Such a helpful content. Hoping to learn korean day-by-day with you, Billy 선생님!
I like how this video is pretty recent compared to the rest of billy's contet. I mean, he created this video not to long ago, which means he's always improving his content to teach us better every time
For brand new learners overwhelmed by Batchim - I find myself coming back to Lesson #9 as I learn more words and what Billy said is right! A lot of this starts to feel natural over time and you DO get the hang of it! Don't overthink it and just keep this video in your pocket to return to as you go! You'll surprise yourself. :)
i'm struggling with this greatly, even keeping me from practicing reading as no textbooks actually go into depth. They just expect you to understand it point blank hahahah. I've always been someone who overcomplicates the simplest of things, with a million questions running in my brain about how, why, etc. You've explained it perfectly so far, and i'll keep coming back to this video to refresh my memory about it. Thank you so much!!
Its quite nice to have someone explain everything so well. I would usually miss pronounce something and sit for a few minutes trying to figure out where i went wrong and then end up finding out after going through all the stuff i wrote down
These sound change rules drain my brain cells!!!! It took me 1 week to finish the whole video about sound change rules. HAHAHHAHAH! Thank you, Billy for teaching us! You really explained the lesson well! :)))
Hello! I'm learning Korean with an app every day for 300 days now and I needed some grammar to "organise" what I've already learnt. Thank you for detailed lessons.
This started off pretty easy… But hopefully with some practice… like the next 5 years I’ll be able to order food or ask for directions. 😂. Thank you for they very organized and engaging lessons, Billy!!
After studying korean for quite some time now on and off, revisiting this video feels so much less overwhelming than when I was first learning Korean! It really does come naturally after some time, and I find listening & repeating out loud from kdrama/podcasts/kpop etc makes a huge difference in developing natural pronunciation and implementation of these rules.
I'm such a perfectionist that I don't want to move on until I have a firm grasp on this... but I'm just gonna roll with this and hope, as you say, Billy, that it will come in time. I'm a former English teacher who looks forward to future units on Korean sentence structure. It feels so abstract right now. (Hey, I enjoyed sentence diagramming as a kid.)😂
😂😂😂 so now all the sounds and letters I learned are upside down….😡I’m not giving up Billie! I don’t care what you throw at me😂😂😂 Thanks so much for all your lessons I have been enjoying them all and you make them so much fun . Trying to make a language easier to learn it’s a lot of work and I know because I speak 2 languages and now learning Korean so from my heart Gracias !, Thank you !, Gamsahapnida!.
not gonna lie, the last video and this one, are kepping me stuck, but I'll not give up, because I am loving to learn the language. Thanks for the great videos, Billy!
That's okay, it can be a time drain if you spend too much time on them, but it's good to at least be aware of them. Feel free to just move on, and you can always come back to this one if you get stuck later on for a review.
I'm so happy that i have finished 한글 and can really start with the language, at the same time i'm happy how well this course is structured. Even if the last lesson stressed me pretty hard, it's going to be so much more fun learning the language with knowing 한글! Thank you so much for this amazing lessons Billy!
this is by far the most exhaustive lesson by billy and the only lesson i've already paused 3 times and ive just reached 11:27 hahahaha. but im not giving up, i will finish this hellhole very soon, just need some redbull
I like this course and have found that if I run it at .75 speed (using the little gear at the top) I have better comprehension. Also, the letters can be written differently which was not clear to me until I saw “Cha” as the cross and also a curved 7 with a leg. I am now at 10 lessons down and 90 to go. 😊
before starting to learn korean language from this channel i visited comment section for review . so this is my comment for beginners , it really helps a lot and it is worth watching . thank you billy for helping us to learn korean language ...
I say that this is the best advice ever: "Just Notice that these rules exist", like maybe write them down once and go on! My teacher told me the same and back then I was like: "Why?" but it helped me a lot, because when you are confronted with these words you suddenly apply the rules on your own :)
I appreciate that you are teaching us with all the effort that you can give and l'm so grateful for the energy that you have while explaining I just can know that you love what you are doing so much thank you
Omg my brain was melting after those 23 minutes. It was very easy to understand but I will need to spend some time making a little chart for myself to try to at least remember some of those rules, though I appreciate that some of these pronunciation changes will just happen naturally 😂
I already knew these ''rules'' but honestly, I don't really focus on them. Just try to read and pronounce it, and you will get the hang of it. If flows naturally as you said.
So finally some Korean words that I’ve seen are making sense in pronunciation xd. Also thanks a lot Billy! In a previous lesson I commented about wanting to start reading, but now I know why it was important to learn these rules first. I know is gonna take some time to get used to these rules, but this video actually motivated me to keep on learning Korean if I’ve already make it this far from basically 0 knowledge of 한국 . So thank you so much for these series :D
I bought all three of your books and I needed help with my pronunciation so I found your channel and this video really sets things straight when it comes to pronunciation. You're a fantastic teacher! 고마워!
No one knows how happy i am rn after finishing sound change rules. 😭 I didn't learn any in the anticipation of that fine day when they come naturally to me, as Billy mentioned😭 I still plan to just review all the examples by pronouncing them without thinking about the rule, timw and again & when needed. Excited for next classes.
Thanks so much for this video. I’m a new learner and was confused as to why some characters weren’t being pronounced according to their normal sounds. This was definitely an eye opener. I bought the kindle version of “Korean Made Simple” because I wanted it quickly and I’m international. I’m planning to get the paperback and workbooks as soon as possible. I’m presently working through the 100 lesson course on UA-cam. Thanks so much for these videos!
Hi Billy! Thank you for this wonderful video.. I actually learned a lot than what I expected. And just found out that Rule #13 is the reason why 끝이 is pronounced as 쿠치. I don't have to struggle pronouncing it anymore omg 😂
Finally... It was annoying surprises every time I came across the "unusual" (for me) pronunciation because most of other lessons on Korean I watched don't cover it! I thought I learned how to read.. But have to study more. Thank you for the lesson!
"ㅎ" can also be explained the same as how " ㅇ" is silent when is placed before a vowel..the next letter(vowel) that follows after "ㅎ" is pronounced rather than saying/or actually pronouncing "ㅎ" sound. Ex:전화 번호 (heaven and earth) Is actually pronounced as 저놔 버노.. Sound changing rule could be a bit difficult but I'd say familiarizing yourself with the characters and trying to practice them then you will realize how sound changing rule actually makes pronouncing words easier 😊
A lot of things makes sense now but.... at the end I don't know if I was just tired or the last ones just seems like???? What on earth??? But it's ok, I'm practicing booth English and Korean comprehension and I'm happy with it! Thank you for putting so much effort on teaching us ♡
I knew about the ㅅ at the end of syllables because my name written in Korean is 줄리엣 (Juliette) and I was so confused as to why the t sound was spelled with the ㅅ. All the other sound changes I didnt really know though!
@@laul6500 unfortunately, I don't know enough about Korean or it's spelling rules to answer that, but I assume it has something to do with the history of the language or pronunciation rules or something. I'm not sure
Watching the first few vids for this course, I thought "korean is kinda easy" but then I got to lesson 7,8,9 which just confuses me. But still I would take it slow until I can understand these 3 hahaha. The other 2 I can understand a bit but this one confused me alot. Anyway, thanks for this free course tho, I don't know why I'm learning korean but here I am.
I always had trouble with sound changing rules but you made it easier by saying it comes naturally. it do comes natural. however, It's great to get a good foundation of these rules so pronunciation becomes easier.
So I just finished the video there and I don't usually leave comments but I thought I would now especially as I know that with the introduction of this video, there will be many people that will suffer with motivation as it seems all far too complex. And while I sit here and agree with you, know that you should all take it at your own pace! I've been on this video for around a week and a half to two weeks I would say, and that is with only just finishing the video and without any reviewing of the actual rules (on second thought, wth that's crazy 🤔) but I also think that it is much more valuable to just try and squeeze a little bit out each day even when motivation is low so that ultimately you come out on top and you will be so much happier for sticking with this beautiful language. So thank you Billy for making a great, detailed video and good luck to those struggling on with their Korean journey! ❤
I'm still having a hard time about these sound change rules but after watching the other one in your playlist and while watching this video, I enjoy learning even more!❤️
i love your channel so much! you make what initially seemed daunting into something i'm excited to learn every day. i have a lot of downtime at my job as a CNC machine operator, so i do lots of learning every shift. it feels really good to be learning and taking notes again, and i can't wait to be able to listen to, read, and watch korean content without subtitles or translation. and to even be able to speak to and understand korean people and korean speakers properly
THANK YOU for making these videos, - particularly this one! I was enunciating each syllable and this video is so helpful! I had to watch and re-watch but I am finally getting it!
It seems like a lot of rules but when I think about French and all the letters we never pronounced it's actually reasonable and most of them sounds pretty logic to me.
I am trying to learn Korean on Duolingo. It’s fun, but there are ZERO explanations for why words sound like they do (or how to build a sentence). You just guess as you go. So I cannot thank you enough for these videos. As frustrated as I am trying to wade through 14 sound change rules, it’s nice to know that you have our backs!
well, this will take me a bit time to learn these naturally since i became too aware of every syllables that i read.BUT THANKS FOR THE VERY VERY PRECISE TEACHINGS OF THE RULES BILLY!!
not sure if i am missing something here... the last 4 irregulars did not seem irregular to me. It seems like the rule is 'tense-able consonants in the beginning of the second syllable should be tensed' I am sure there will be exceptions to that! but from all the examples and rules Billy lists in this video, i dont think that rule is violated. Learning so much :) thank you Billy!
At first, the idea of sound change rules felt overwhelming, but think about English words, we kinda do the same too! Think about it... when we say "cat", we naturally pronounce it as "ca" (no great emphasis on the 't'), rather than saying "ca-tuh". I guess that's what Billy is trying to get across- that there is less emphasis and stress towards the end of each syllable, hence why the more aspirated consonances turn into ㄷ. Helps it naturally flow!
Hi there! I wanted to get back into learning Korean alongisde my Japanese studies because I love both languages and didn't want to put Korean off any longer... coming from a phonetic langauge to all these rules is incredibly overwhelming and I am doubting myself hard right now! I know they will come naturally with time if I pace myself and stick to it, I just wanted to vent lol :-( Loving Korean Made Simple so far and I'm determined to finish it all at my own pace, whatever that may look like day to day. Thank you so much :D
Thank you so much for explaining these rules! I couldn't understand why my favorite kpop group was very clearly singing "불-놀-이-야", but when they were talking about the song title I was hearing a mysterious "불로리야". Well now I know (and that's one rule I'll remember forever now haha).
Thank you so much for explaining this. I was really confused because the books I have gotten did not explain how or why any of this happened and I was really confused on why they were pronounced differently.
Hi Billy! Thanks for this video. It is formatted in a much clearer way than those I’ve seen on other channels! I can understand the logic. I have a request and a couple of questions. My first request is for a (long) list of additional words that can be used to practice all these Sound Change Rules. Perhaps a pdf download on your channel? Questions: have you done a video on vowel contractions? And I desperately need a definitive tutorial on k/g, p/b, t/d and r/l that is based on the letter’s position within the word (ie first, last, between vowels). Have you made a video for that? I’m just a beginner, but I have come farther with your teachings than other channels. Thanks!
THIS IS SO GOOD!! Thank you for the amazing explanation! I guess it will take a while for these rules to come "naturally" hahahah but I totally understood everything you taught!! THANK YOU! Ready for the next video. :)

Just take notes from this, and move on :) You can always come back to your notes later when you need them.
But thankfully I know that it's a rule and I'm not crazy
Thanks!!! Will be studying these soon
I was also in exact same situation
Same here duolingo confused me every time🤣🤣 and I was like what is this everytime the sound changes🤨🤨
Duolingo's pronunciation always sounds so damned grainy, and I'm studying Japanese, French, Russian, and Korean on it :'D

Well, naturally if you're reading them more quickly :-P
I KNOW! I was working so hard to get all those consonants out! Reminded me of learning Russian.
I couldn't agree more 😭
Just thought I'd share: this is my 4th time repeating the videos up until this one and they all really make sense now! Just keep repeating them till they make sense and they will eventually :) x
I’m on my first watch, and there was no doubt in my mind I’d have to rewatch this a good few times lol
probably would have to watch this like 10 times lmao
After learning my first foreign language fluenty I learned a simple, yet extremely important lesson. When you are really serious about learning a language, and you come across something you can't understand or say, just relax, practice, and let your brain do the magic for you. You eventually get these things, like, for real, no need to be desperate or something.
So true.

THANKYOUUUU
p.s also seeing you stand there physically is more captivating and makes it easier for me to listen and focus as to what you are saying, rather than looking at a blank screen with just some animated letters and audio.
how’s your progress now?
I started learning Korean in May 2020 and I started this channel recently and I am Angry on myself that I came to this channel very late. 😭😭💜
I didnt remember that there were some many sound change rules.
Jesus that took all the will power In me to take the notes and be patient but Billy killed it, the lessons are amazing as always.
Man this was SO HARD to get through. Luckily you make it easier, but damn. So many rules.
not gonna lie, the last video and this one, are kepping me stuck, but I'll not give up, because I am loving to learn the language. Thanks for the great videos, Billy!
That's okay, it can be a time drain if you spend too much time on them, but it's good to at least be aware of them. Feel free to just move on, and you can always come back to this one if you get stuck later on for a review.
Billy, you are an ANGEL! I have no words to express my gratitude for what you do. Thank you so much! God bless you
좋아 XD It makes me happy when I can recognise a word, even with my really limited knowledge of Korean
Man after more than 14 hours of practice .now I am able to use the rules somewhat easily .
I'm so happy that i have finished 한글 and can really start with the language, at the same time i'm happy how well this course is structured. Even if the last lesson stressed me pretty hard, it's going to be so much more fun learning the language with knowing 한글! Thank you so much for this amazing lessons Billy!
this is by far the most exhaustive lesson by billy and the only lesson i've already paused 3 times and ive just reached 11:27 hahahaha. but im not giving up, i will finish this hellhole very soon, just need some redbull
you are better than any teacher I ever saw I always learn from you
I like this course and have found that if I run it at .75 speed (using the little gear at the top) I have better comprehension.
My teacher told me the same and back then I was like: "Why?"
but it helped me a lot, because when you are confronted with these words you suddenly apply the rules on your own :)
This is my third day watching this lesson 😂 it looks so easy but it's not, perks of being a slow learner lol but I am not giving up 💪
Finally i found a nice channel to read korean and a great teacher too. Thank you sir. ❤❤
Do you have more courses after this serves??
Do you have more courses after this series??
Yes, after you finish I have a "Korean Conversation Course" here.
@@GoBillyKorean okk thanks 🙏🙏
Duolingo falied me. It didn't teach me any of this and I spent months on there, this was way more informational than Duolingo. Thank you Billy!
고마워!
I didn't know that there were so many sound change rules. Thanks a lot Billy for this lesson!
Ex:전화 번호 (heaven and earth)
Is actually pronounced as 저놔 버노..
Thank you for putting so much effort on teaching us ♡
I saw this video till the end...only hoping "this wil happen naturally"...and hoping will learn along the way...thanks for these lessons
Thank you so much for uploading Korean course videos.
I knew about the ㅅ at the end of syllables because my name written in Korean is 줄리엣 (Juliette) and I was so confused as to why the t sound was spelled with the ㅅ. All the other sound changes I didnt really know though!
Juliette Braden to avoid confusion instead of ‘t sound’ say ㄷ. Cuz I got confused a bit because it’s a cross between a t and d
@@sigmathletics I was thinking of it as a very soft t sound, but this makes more sense! Thank you!
@@sigmathletics I was thinking of it as a very soft t sound, but this makes more sense! Thank you!
but why cant we put the ㄷ at the end of your name instead of ㅅ ?
You're welcome, and good luck in your studies!
It's really easy to understand from your video teacher❤
Lesson 9: SOUND CHANGE RULES✅
Finally done 한글
If you asked me 2 weeks ago that I could learn & write 한글 I would tell u that ur crazy but I did it🥺😆
I really wanna thank you, your videos are really helpful and clear, I believe that your videos will make me better than others
감사합니다 😁
I'm still having a hard time about these sound change rules but after watching the other one in your playlist and while watching this video, I enjoy learning even more!❤️
Is it just me or Billy somewhat look similar to Charlie Puth😊😊
HE DOES OMG
I KNEW HE LOOKED FAMILIAR OMG
Or Jake Peralta from Brooklyn99
Rule #13 really was a final boss challenge. I still want to learn Korean after this so I think that means I won.
These changes are so natural that I know all of them, even when I never properly learn them. I just heard and imitated.
감사합니다!!
i love your channel so much! you make what initially seemed daunting into something i'm excited to learn every day. i have a lot of downtime at my job as a CNC machine operator, so i do lots of learning every shift. it feels really good to be learning and taking notes again, and i can't wait to be able to listen to, read, and watch korean content without subtitles or translation. and to even be able to speak to and understand korean people and korean speakers properly
THANK YOU for making these videos, - particularly this one! I was enunciating each syllable and this video is so helpful! I had to watch and re-watch but I am finally getting it!
You know it's a great video when there aren't any dislikes
It seems like a lot of rules but when I think about French and all the letters we never pronounced it's actually reasonable and most of them sounds pretty logic to me.
I am trying to learn Korean on Duolingo. It’s fun, but there are ZERO explanations for why words sound like they do (or how to build a sentence). You just guess as you go. So I cannot thank you enough for these videos. As frustrated as I am trying to wade through 14 sound change rules, it’s nice to know that you have our backs!
Thnx Billy.....I'm waiting for this...I really confused how could I pronounce hangul....so really grateful to you....😇😇
well, this will take me a bit time to learn these naturally since i became too aware of every syllables that i read.BUT THANKS FOR THE VERY VERY PRECISE TEACHINGS OF THE RULES BILLY!!
Rule 9 was the only rule that literally came automatically to my mind while noting down the first example
not sure if i am missing something here... the last 4 irregulars did not seem irregular to me.
It seems like the rule is 'tense-able consonants in the beginning of the second syllable should be tensed'
I am sure there will be exceptions to that! but from all the examples and rules Billy lists in this video, i dont think that rule is violated.
Learning so much :) thank you Billy!
Oh my goodness, that was a lot! But now the words I am practicing make more sense with the rules applied and explained.
I am loving the new layout. I can finally follow 😅
Ive watched this 100 times, wrote it down so many times but i can not for the life of me retain this
Re-watch the introduction part where I say that you're doing okay :-) You can move on to the next lesson ;)
I see the CG tutorials are paying off.
Made a lot of donuts last month.
Learn Korean with GO! Billy Korean donuts meaning money?
no it means donuts
this chapter so confusing but i believe by keep practicing the pronunciations it will getting better. Thanks Billy for all the videos. .. 👍👍👍👍
Ateez? XD
@@jjjjson2007 Who else? :D I need to find examples for other sound change rules in their songs.
Its because when ㄹ & ㄴ meets, it becomes ㄹ (실내->실래, 윤리->율리 etc) and since 이 "ㅇ" has no sound the ㄹ from 불 replaces the ㅇ
Thank you so much for explaining this. I was really confused because the books I have gotten did not explain how or why any of this happened and I was really confused on why they were pronounced differently.
these sound changing rules are going to make me jump from my rooftop... I'll have to revisit these rules every day
You don't need to memorize them all right now. Just know they exist, take some notes, and move on to the next lesson :-)
Best Korean teacher 💜
Thanks!
Can you explain what you mean by vowel contractions?
THIS IS SO GOOD!! Thank you for the amazing explanation! I guess it will take a while for these rules to come "naturally" hahahah but I totally understood everything you taught!! THANK YOU! Ready for the next video. :)
When Billy starts giving us mental support to prevent us from letting a class drive us crazy we know some crazy stuff is gonna happen
this is kinda easy but abit confusing i think only taking notes and just listening makes it easier thankz
