Hey, even if someone's motivation is something as simple as "because kpop", doesn't mean that that reasoning is bad or cringy. Learning something new is something great in of itself.

And also always wanted to learn a different language and I decided I wanted to learn Korean. Also because I wanted to watch kdrama without subtitles 😂❤

I agree. Not just about the Kdramas and Kpop as there is more to just the entertainment industry. Exploring cultures is one of the exciting things about valuing diversity.
My mother was Korean, but after coming to the US when I was four, she stopped talking to us in Korean, she wanted us to be accepted as American, (our father was American) So I forgot Korean, and now here I am in my 50s trying to learn it again. I'm 65 and been watching K-Drama for the last three years. I'm French Canadian. Learned English by watching English programs because of my parents (also French Canadian). My children learned English the same way as I did. It served my first three sons when enlisting in the military... I want to learn Korean. Who knows the future. I might go to Korea with my youngest son or maybe just delay dementia or Alzheimer 🤗. I'm enjoying every minute 😁
Still remember back in 2020 when I first found this video. 이제 한국말 그때보다 많이 잘하고있는데, 이럴때가도 이써는게 잠 신기하네요 그때 어떻게 하국어 읽이도 못했지 와 진짜 잘했어 내가.
One day I will watch kdrama without subtitles:')
Mikayla Merna is it working?
i mean are you on progress
sec acc sort of I can actually understand some dialogue in kdrama without sub because I watch kdramas quite frequently but I still need to work on the grammar and learn how to write (I realised learning the Korean words is similar to memorising spellings u use the sound to spell the words)
But recently I practise less frequently bcs I don't have good kdramas to watch so my progress is slow :/
Mikayla Merna ohhh thank youu for replying tho:))))
if that aint a mood i don't know what is
Reasons the languages are easy:
Japanese- pronouncing
Korean- writing
Chinese- grammar
Omg yess, thats the first thing i noticed when i started learning those languages. Also japanese is really similar to my native language, so it makes pronounciation way easier for me.

I'm korean-american and a year ago, I found this video. My mother is korean and my father is american. Although I was half korean, I never got to learn the language because when I was 3, we left Korea and started living in the states. Every 6 months we'd go to Korea to visit my grandparents but I wasn't really close with my relatives there since there's a language barrier between us, so often when I want to speak to them, I would use translators or have my mother translate words for me since my korean relatives know limited english and the only korean words I knew were 엄마, 할머니, other endearments and basic greetings. When we went back to america, I told my mother that I wanted to learn, she said she'd help me but due to her work she never had the time to do so. I came across this video and ever since then I started learning more and more. This video was literally my stepping stone. When we returned in Korea, my relatives were so happy that we can communicate better. Truly grateful for this, and to everyone who's learning, never give up
Omg that’s so good, do u want to be my study buddy so we can learn together?
Can we communicate and give me some tips I’ll be so grateful for that ; I’m absolute beginner ^^

I used to try to learn Korean in 2020, but I gave up since I lost motivation and thought it was abit hard.. at that time, I didn’t think about learning the alphabet first, but I definitely recommend learning it first. And I’m not sure why but, 5 days ago, I started learning Korean again!! (Nov 13) and I have already memorized the whole alphabet. I thought it would be hard, but no actually it really isn’t.. as long as you actually believe in yourself and never give up! •1 - it sounds very pretty, I like the way Koreans speak.
•2 - it’s interesting, I’m from Russia , and I think 한글 (Hangul) is maybe easier then Cyrillic alphabet
•3 - to understand K-dramas without subtitles
•4 - to understand my Korean friends because they sometimes talk in Korean
•5 - really... to understand K-pop lyrics

It's gonna take you a few months to be able to read correctly, because the sounds are not 100% phonetic, just like English. I have been learning Korean for a year and it's still pretty hard to rememebr all the sound change rules. For example 읽다, 읽어, 읽는 all sound completley differnt. Also it takes years to memorize enough vocabulary and grammar to speak fluently.
@@as_paradise bro that's me too
Out of all the videos and resources I have used whilst trying to learn Korean, I think this was by far one of the best! Really good explanations of sound change rules and how the letters and different words are pronounced. As I was searching videos for studying Hangul I came across this video. I love how you pronounce each letter, it makes it so much easier for me to understand. The most magical 90 minutes for Korean learners all over the world!
I soooo agreeee!!!
Many thanks!!!!
I started learning hangul yesterday. I'm happy to say i'm catching on and these lessons has been so helpful. I'm motivated and I hope it stays that way. Thank you Billy for putting these together 🙂 ❤
Sound change rules were difficult for me to learn but u made it easy. Thanks a lot. I watched this ist video at very end.
I spent more than 6 hours studying this and rewatching it over and over and i can know read and write Korean :) I’m still super rusty but with time and a lot of practice I can improve ^^
Giraffe_Luv 04 update pls
Yes^
where did you learn korean? right now i can only read it... help?
においがするまで wait my bad! I meant speaking korean hehe. I’m fluent in reading but not understanding and speaking
@@via6085 Have you tried the "talk to me in Korean" videos. They're really good.
“i eat dirt“ this guy had me trying to say that outloud for 2 minutes without knowing what it meant
lmaoo
and then you didnt notice that your neighbour was korean and he was like uhm. Lol
LMAO
I am currently trying to learn the language and I figured I would start from the basics. I am watching this video in segments because I also need to remember everything. Thank you for constructing something like this. It is easy to understand and so far I learnt the basic consonants and vowels and I can read Korean. I even figured how to write my name and although it doesn't look pretty, it is still an achievement. Thank you so much for this.
this video is the best video in my opinion to learn Korean, you explain the rules so good and we understand absolutely everything ! in 90 minute I've could learn really many of consonants and vowels and I've never done that before so this video is perfecttt
Can I just say that Kpop idols literally learn English so they can communicate with their fans and promote their group. I feel like it’s nice/respectful of us (fans) to learn their language as well. Like honestly every other country knows English (it’s ONE OF the most spoken languages after all), so I feel like we need to learn other languages too in return.
Edit: I am aware that English is not the most spoken language. My apologies. That isn’t my point so pls ignore that from now on.
i mean why would we need to do that? Its all up to our choice lol it isn't even a must. If they already are learning english, we could communicate with them in english aswell.
@@chaeluv9752 yeah I know but like they had to learn English so they could communicate with us. And yeah we don’t NEED to learn Korean or even have to. I’m not saying that every single person needs to learn Korean. It’s okay if people don’t want to. I just thought it’d be respectful since they learn English so they could talk to their fans, why don’t we learn Korean (if we wanted) so we could talk to them in their native language. ^^ I mean when you travel to different countries, it’s nice to know some simple phrases and shows that you’re interested in their culture. Lol I hope I’m not being rude. I’m just trying to explain myself 😂😂
I’m learning because I feel irresponsible if I don’t since it’s my favs native language
@@atroll6677 hahah same!
@@foxierae1024 no ,you are not being rude or arrogant, in fact you are very respectful, thoughtful and clever. English language, culture and their people are not the centre of the world! There are many other languages, cultures and people around the world, I wish the majority of people would have your attitude than the whole world would definitely be a better place! Keep learning and don’t pay attention to ignorant and arrogant opinions. All the very best 🤗🥰🙋♀️
Namjoon will be so proud of us watching us learning Hangul 😁
Yes
Trueeee 💜💜💜💜💜
Are eyebrows are save🤣
Yaaaaa.... he will be so happy 😊💕
😂😂😂😂😂😂 if I can learn it before 12 sep, then it'll be his b-day gift
You will receive thanks and gratitude on this video for years to come. It is AMAZING! I was flabbergasted at how quickly I could pick up on the letters and pronunciation when it always seemed so daunting and confusing. Thank you!!
This is my first day learning Korean, 18-NOV-2023. My passion started when I saw an ig video earlier today of a Korean girl translating the words I know into Korean which made it so interesting to start learning the language. I entered this video as my initial way to start studying a new language and I cannot believe how perfectly he explained every letter, the pronunciation of it and how to put it in syllables. This video made reading and writing Hangul so much easier than I thought and made me love this language and look forward to studying more!! ❤
I cannot wait to come back and write my progression on it. And for the people who do want to learn but are hesitant take this rule: " NEVER SAY ONE DAY BUT SAY DAY ONE "

The best video ever. I can’t believe how well explained this video is, thank you so much. I think I’m gonna be able to understand hangul in some days.

Thank you for this video. You explained everything in great detail and gave examples and have made Korean pronunciation so much simpler.
Thank you for this study guide! It makes the learning process of Korean way more enjoyable and slow-paced to understand. It has a different way of spelling which makes it intriguing. Learning a new language makes me feel smarter as well :)

Very true.
This is amazing. I'm going to study this video in 45 minute sections. Then I will start my self study course! Thank you GO! Billy you are so amazing. I really appreciate how you explain things. I've watched many of your other videos and your channel is gold!
Greetings, I am currently at lesson 7, as of the moment I can read and write basic words thanks to you. I needed this to work in Korea hope to learn more. I usually review all the lessons before going to the next so I've been watching this video for a week now, I am struggling with vowels, but I am doing my best. Godbless to you Sir Billy.
why do i have more motivation to start learning this than my 3 tests that i REALLy need to study for, which are in less than a week....
Lol.. I have a science test tomorrow and here I am, spending my day learning hangul and ignoring the whole existence of my science book.. hope I score well 🤞
I have 3 tests coming up this week and here I am tryna learn hangul instead of studying. :) hope your tests went well tho
Learning korean is more fun than school work...... thats suprising cus I hated spanish in school :/ wha is goin on here

i felt this on a spiritual level
Why am I here?

that was amazing i finished 3 parts and i practiced the consonants and vowels for so many times and i feel such as like my Korean changed a lot and i'm feeling the progress thank u very much for helping me much appreciated
I actually started learning korean a few days ago and I came across this video. It's really helpful alot !!! Thank you for this. I wanted to learn korean for many reasons and I hope I can learn it! I know it's really hard to learn a whole new language by yourself, I mean by watching videos... idk if I can learn it, but I must not lose hope :)
Hey, i saw your comment and i want to say that even if it's hard, do not give up. Hard work pay ! I'm learning too and I'm at 50:00 in the video. It's not easy but, if you think of it: It's so cool to talk korean (you'll be able to understand kpop songs and kdrama lol). Don't give up. Sorry if i've made mistakes, english isn't my first language. Fighting !
Don't mean to seem stupid but
I've spent money and time trying many methods of learning a better understating and this has been a greater tool than those combined
JamesJ422 he's just like a real teacher, it's great!
I taught myself to read Korean in a few hours, or so I thought. However, when I tried to show off to a Korean friend of mine, I quickly found that there was more to learn. I learned that the way you pronounce THE SAME SYMBOL changes depending on ??? Now, I'm sure that if I had asked for help, I would have eventually been able to read, but I didn't do that. I was so disgusted with what had been touted as a perfect system that I just gave up and never tried again. I could try again, but I don't live in Korea anymore, so there would be no point. I had no such problem with Hirakana. Again, I taught it to myself in a few hours, but the result was different than with Hangul. With Hirakana, I was able to use it correctly and usefully my entire stay in Japan. That was over fifty years ago, and I still remember it. Sure, it would take me a few minutes to get up to speed, but not as long as an hour. It's that easy. Katakana was a different story. I found its characters were too difficult to learn because they looked too much alike. Another thing is that its usage is so limited, that it's just not necessary to learn. So I didn't take the time. Arabic seems impossible
Quabledistocficklepo
You got to have patience 🙄
Those sound rule changes are the same function like English blending rules..so when you talk fast in English, some word phrases lend itself to blend together to make it more fluid like mixing colors on a palette.
JamesJ422 I am Korean!

"5years of french class and i cant even introduce myself" 😂😂😂😂

In my 2 years of french all i remember is boujour je'mapple
French is hard. Im french and bilingual i want to be trilingual and learn Korean !
I'm french haha, if you need any help, I'm here
This video was super helpful. I actually have learned hangul but I wanted to go over the proper pronunciation again especially for the double consonants and strong consonants since I could never fully grasp the differences. This video made those differences really clear and distinct and so easy to understand. Also while there are a lot of sound changing rules, it's really easy to understand with the examples that you give. Thank you so much for this video! It was so helpful :)
Getting time to finally put in the time and effort to learn. At first I only wanted to learn because of Stray Kids. Then Song Kang and kdramas, but I fell in love with the language and culture. My friend and I are planning a trip to Japan and I talked her into going to Korea as well. Good luck everyone, even if we only end up learning the basics.
Yall. We need to make him famous. The amount of dedication put into this is astronomical. Duolingo can never
bro duolingo is so confusing to me i swear. i wanted to learn korean on it and literally gave up a sec later
Yup that's true I couldn't even understand I was all confused because they were equalising English and hangul
@@asmabik2232 facts bro , they gotta improve on that tbh
Duolingo is best
@@banpinicezy483 no 😐😐
not gonna lie, between like heavily taking notes and looking up every single example word he gave us, i probably spent a good at least 7 hours on this video
on my 3rd day lmao
@@veeevve8619 actually, i have been pausing each part to learn, and i guess i am on my third week...
this is my second day learning. bit by bit.
one chapter a day when you have time, and keep writing the characters in previous chapters!
I know we'll finish and memorize them all if we really want to.
good luck to my fellow learners!
tysmmm!!! ive just started learning hangul and this video was so helpful. there are many rules which makes it a little confusing for me but with more practise I'm sure it will be a piece of cake!! TY FOR THE HELP
My main language is gibberish but I wanna learn Korean.
So I’m here.
Madelane Harp wait.... gibberish is a language
SAME. 😂
a fat mood
Same it doesnt help i even speak english half the time
Me: starts off pretty good, and learns fast
Sound change rules: *appears*
Me: So..uh..why am I here again?
If you got that far, feel free to start learning the rest of the language. Just know the sound change rules exist so you can refer to them in the future if you get stuck, but don't worry about mastering those before moving on. You'll get the hang of those anyway just through a lot of exposure.
Lol same
I’m about to get to that part next oh no 😂
Yeah the sound change definitely changed my confidence... It will definitely take me a long time to memorize the rules. 아 자! (But I had the confidence to install hangul on my phone for simple words like that, cause of this video. Hah!)
out of all the videos i’ve seen this one is the most helpful one that actually makes sense really qyick
oddly enough i remember this video so clearly just like it was yesterday except it was nearly 5 years ago. love your work billy tysm for teaching me so much cool stuff :)
I’m trying to learn because I think the culture and language is gorgeous and not just for kpop
that was pretty simply erica......
lol stupid sarcasam... T_T
Sameee
Same
Soo true
Really....I'm also learning this language cuz I found it very cute (than Japanese) and easy also idk how hehe!
Tbh I like kpop and kpop is what first got me to want to learn korean
1) korean sounded so pretty?!!?
2) I loved how it looks when you write in korean especially if your handwriting is neat
3) id like to understand another language without subtitles other than English and Spanish
4) it makes me laugh when some of my friends say I’m stupid for liking kpop when I don’t understand them but really I don’t think you have to know the language to get your message across
5) im not a kboo at least not trying to be
6) learning korean makes me genuinely happy
same here
Same though, tried to explain learning Korean to my family but they didn’t understand why I wanted to, Korean is not the only language I am learning either.
same ! (:
I like learning Korean. I also like Kpop and Kdramas. Just because you like stuff from Korea, doesn't mean you are obsessed with everything Korean. I like some stuff from Korea, but it's so embaressing to tell people that, because they act like I am obsessed.
Lol. Agreed. Why can't I like something without being considered obssessed with a country?
Just found out about this channel and this video is amazing, makes everything more easier to learn, thank you so much ♥
You and Hailey make it so easy to read Hangul and write words! Thank you so much.
