Word of advice, don't mess around with pressure vessels. The explosive power of compressed gas is scary. If you do find a receiver that might work have it checked out by an approved AIA. You're in Cape Town, so contact Executive Safety Services and have them check out the vessel before using it.
A 47Kg propane cylinder/tank is a viable alternative if you have a good motor and pump and still want to build a working compressor. It will also increase the volume of stored air available. The propane cylinders are also rated for much higher pressure and as they aren't subjected to moisture it's very unusual to find one that has suffered internal corrosion. That said you would still need to modify/weld it to accommodate the inlets and drain plug. I have never replaced a compressor tank with a propane cylinder, however I have mounted one on wheels and adapted it as a secondary air reservoir (They hold 92 Litres approx) to supplement my 150 Litre compressor. At this point it has held 150 PSI happily for 10 years and counting! I added a drain plug, Inlet and twin regulator/pressure gauge outlets, so pretty much the same job minus the actual pump and motor. 😉
For the damaged one: BBQ grill. Regarding the compressor, maybe you can source a big propane tank (make sure to fill it up with water to the absolute top then rinse etc to force any gas to escape before making anything else to prevent explosions) or some other used compressor tank (hopefully a big one) then adapt the compressor to it and you will have a huge improvement for stored air volume
Well, you did what you could, Jean. But since the motor and pump seems to be good, who knows? Perhaps you find a better tank later on. 😊 Or use the motor to build something, like a disc sander. It could work very well! Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
I'm glad you still posted this video. Some youtubers don't post their mistakes, but i think mistakes and failures are an important step in he process, because everyone experiences set backs and how to deal with them is a vital skill that everyone needs.
Well, I'd let the guy know that you appreciate his donation... Say "TANKS A LOT" and turn it into something like a planter, fire pit, shop stool, or anything BUT a pressure tank LOL.. 🤣
definitely find another tank that you can use to take your pump/motor. As to the old one... if it is that rusted through, then only the top half really stands any chance of being useful, so fire box or planter!! ;-)
There are some tools/parts that should not be restored - and tank from compressor is one of this. U will never know what is inside and then pumping a lot of pressure inside is a bad idea. It can explode. It's not worth the risk :)
Can't win them all but I would be curious to see the motor restoration if you decide to move forward with that part. As for what to do with the tank, I figure the tank is compromised too far to use as a fireplace or grill but who knows.
The Achilles heel on any older compressor is the tank. The electric motor or the air compressor motor can be revived if parts are available, but an aged weakened tank has a lifespan that if exceeded can become a bomb waiting to explode knocking a wall of your shop off it's foundation. Be cautious with older compressor tanks and always pressure test them with water before proceeding with a restoration.
@woodshopjunkies don't consider it a fail...it's a learning process. You could get really creative and turn it into a fishtank that looks like a submarine! That would be unique, repurposing instead of landfill fodder and it would be a funny conversation starter!
I would use the tank stand up to make a bbq smoker out of it, Weber Smokey mountain style. Or perhaps a rocket stove thingy. If not, then on its side and make it a grill with a lid. The motor and pump can be reused as well for a disc and or belt sander, drill, lathe or as a compressor with a new tank. With your present experience I would be careful with getting a second hand tank 😂. Keep on your good work, man!!
What you did there was NOT a "waste of time" There's plenty of videos out there just showing "restorations" of air compressors... Or in other words a paint job... ☹🇬🇧
Thanks for confirming that not all rebuilds are successful. As for uses, I’m sure most will say to convert to a grill. I’d rather see something unique like a fire proof trash to place rags and other flammable material. But what I’d really like is either a smoker for meats, a wood stove for pizza, or maybe a fire can to burn scraps and other material. Something different than a grill. Keep up the great work!
My suggestions: - Rocket stove - BBQ - Toolbox (like those made of steel drum barrels) Design inspirations: - Space Age aesthetic - Airstream travel trailers
Jean, it is illegal to modify a pressure vessel because of the dangers involved. Rather use it for a braai or flower pot. We don't want you injured in the process.
A neighbor rebuilt his compressor with new rings bored the cylinder and put back together. Fired up the compressor and the tank ruptured it sounded like a cannon going off. Listen to the others a compromised pressure vessel is dangerous.🤯🛫
Because its so rusty ii don't think it will be worth turing in to a grill. But letting it see out the rest of its days as a planter will probably be a good last life
Try to find a similar size compressor with a bad pump or motor that you could use your pump and motor on. Worst case scenario you may need to drill some new mounting holes but you would then have a functioning compressor.
ok brother all say turn it into a braai - guess you already have one :-) If you like ? let me know as I am in northern suburbs of Cape Town and I have a similar 50 liter compressor (that works ) for you ?
Maybe cut it into strips, flatten, and then make the strips into knives? The alloy might not be worth the bother though, especially given that it's prone to rust.
Brai for sure!
Also, thats the least expensive part of a compressor - get a new tank and the motor and pump might still be worth restoring!
cut it in half and make a charcoal grill

Make a small wood stove out of the tank! Shame your track record isn't a 100% score anymore, Jean!
You can get a new tank to go with the pump and motor. Definitely better to find out when cleaning that to use it and have the tank pop
That's a real shame, but at least you found out before you pressurised it up to 8 bar.

I say fire pit or a planter. I imagine the upper half of the tank is in better shape than the lower half.
I was fired on the spot for welding a handle on a compressor tank. Pressure vessels will kill you. This is no joke.

Yes, I love the idea of a BBQ pit. Split the cylinder in half lengthwise and hinged. It would look so cool.
I guess being a freebie you have to expect the consequences unfortunately but yeah repurposing it into a coal oven for the garden sounds great 👍🏽 👌
@woodshopjunkies don't consider it a fail...it's a learning process. You could get really creative and turn it into a fishtank that looks like a submarine! That would be unique, repurposing instead of landfill fodder and it would be a funny conversation starter!
The tank is a bust, but you could still renew the compressor, and get a fresh tank to use with it.
Well spotted. Just a suggestion , use a propane gas bottle as a resevoir they are easily found for not much money.
convert it into a forge
잘보고 갑니다.

Well my friend make a stainless tank
Cut it in half and make planters.
Braai the beast!
Buddy search what happens when these tanks explode - you’ll never want to restore an old compressor again. I think you dodged a bullet there ou maat !
roof storage their at 1:45, roof storage gone at 1:47, back at 2:04, gone again at 2:20 lol

Repurpose that cylinder as a forge, heater, Street Sign/Advert, lots of uses for that as long as you don't put any pressure like you said.
What a shame but still enjoy watching your restoration videos even when they don’t quite workout. Keep up the good work! 🇦🇺

Cut off the brackets and weld to a new tank. Then rebuild.
A neighbor rebuilt his compressor with new rings bored the cylinder and put back together. Fired up the compressor and the tank ruptured it sounded like a cannon going off. Listen to the others a compromised pressure vessel is dangerous.🤯🛫
I would make a trash can with a foot lever to open the cap...
Cut the end caps off and make friends with a plumber that could chuck a piece of off cut pipe of the same diameter your way
Make a BBQ with the old tank get hold of an old log gas bottle and drill and tap for all the compressor fittings and thanks for your video s good job
restore motor, new tank? Thanks for showing unsuccessful things as well, great character!
Because its so rusty ii don't think it will be worth turing in to a grill. But letting it see out the rest of its days as a planter will probably be a good last life
If compressor engine work fine and the safety valv, buy a new/used tank.
Thanks for sharing, bud. Cheers see ya on next one
Charcoal grill, you can make it as a small sink for when you have to wash some utensils...
If nothing else you have aquired a motor that can be used for another project
Good thing you checked... I have a lot of old compressors and should check them as well. Thanks for the video.
I'm in agreement for the barbeque or some other type of stove or oven.
Much more interesting is what you are going to do with a pump
at least you got a motor and compressor pump out of the deal
Как это будет по английскому, shcaise video

Lucky before you spent any money on it
How about a beer/drinks cooler
When are you going to start on the all in one work bench?
I am also wondering and waiting in great anticipation. . .
Hola, que tal un horno de carbón ?
Turn the old tank into a braai!
Save the other parts.
Definitely a braai oven dingus
Umbrella holder
Hi
Rocket Stove!
Braai boet! Bou 'n braai!
Maak n braai broer 😁
Lamp
En daar dag ek jy is 'n paar dae laat met April! Swings and roundabouts ou maat.

They make a tank liner that you could put in there. You could probably even get some spray in bedliner in line the inside of the tank it would fix it.
make it into a b-b-q
Turn it into a smoker.
