Cheap and localized geodesic modular structures are going to be so important for mitigating the suffering caused by the impending climate refugee crisis. Excellent progress on one of the most important looming humanitarian issues of our time.

Suresh K. As soon as you start looking at products that interact with food or medicine or such, there are bound to be extra regulations for a public safety purpose. So while I agree it's ultimately a good idea to consider, I don't think it's the right starting point. But similar type items like buckets, wine holders, shoe soles... things that won't necessarily come into contact with food, that are equally useful I'd suggest are perhaps better initial products. :)

I started making writing pens out of HDPE . I go to my local laundromat and pick up used laundry soap containers and melt them down into blocks and turn them into pins on my lathe . I wish I can show pictures here to show what I have done.

@@Kiwi-bn8px the best fire retardant I know would be to not set your house on fire lol XD. Honestly though, if we use that logic we shouldnt have any plastic in the house at all. I have worked with someone very like the person you described. Very talented, poured a huge amount of effort and energy into the project, while being extremely abrasive and critical in the online forums. Chatting directly 1:1 would help, we would get everything straightened out then the next day he would be back at it. It seemed like like a compulsion with him - he couldn't walk away from something he disagreed with, and saw the worst intentions in every message and felt the need to lash out and fight back. Perhaps an experienced therapist might know the right way to manage this kind of personality, I don't. I do think you have to have clear guidelines for community behavior and apply them consistently. After that, I can only wish you luck!

  • @MrV902

LOL I was wondering when you were going to say something about pporg (Guenter). Seems like he means well. I've always noticed him helping but he's quick to tease and he's not hesitant to express his opinions. I just assumed it was a European thing.
In other news, I just bought a shredder set and I hope to make some progress on setting up a work station in Northwest Florida soon enough. I was inspired by your extruded "elephant tusk" to start thinking of ways to make quality "ivory" products to raise awareness of the potential that plastic has.
I mean, I should be posting this in the forums instead of my UA-cam shitposting account, but here I am.

    • @kendarr
      @kendarr 5 років тому +3

Look under your favorite bow and check what's the number, the number says the type of plastic, 2 is HDPE and we drink from it, milk jugs are made from HDPE, if you see the number 5 is PP, and i do also belive its safe, you can check online witch types plastics are safe for food contact, genraly pvc and nylon are not great for that, pvc can give of nasty chemical and fumes, and nylon too if iam not mistaken

      @kendarr 5 років тому +1

Also PET is used a lot in various bootles but it's not recommended for, microwave, uasualy microwave safe plastics are the ones with higher melting points such as PP (230c), but don't take my word for it ask Google

I was wondering about that, too. So HDPE should be fine, PP is safest from what I get from the answers here? Does recycling do anything to the HDPE or PP that would make it harmful after the heating process? As in, will it be more likely to send off some harmful gases (sorry, I am not a chemist...hence asking a bit studpidly ;)).

Just a shame I can't do anything with it without machines! so I've been building the machines from Precious Plastic
To be worth doing you'd need a lot of blocks, probably the size of concrete blocks! Can't find a way to really do that yet =/ Imagine having a garden shed made of "waste" plastic.

In the first videos, you said, that there is no point to recycle plastic in to "small things" which will end up in the ground as trash again. You need larger products to consume more recycled plastic. Think big! Phone case will last you a year, two, max three and then you upgrade your phone.

I really enjoy keeping up with the progress you are making regarding recycling plastics. You are showing the world what can be done with some effort and hard work. I have found that the people who have the most to say about something usually do the least to help these ideas and projects. So what if you are making a profit on the things that you sell on your website. People hate it because they are not as passionate about this as you and your team are. I applaud what you and your team are doing. Best of luck to you!

Dave, you are finally acknowledging the difficulty of what you set out to do -turn post-consumer plastic into worthy products that will honestly, and economically displace virgin non-renewable material. Good (competitive) product design is hard, doing it with inferior or variable materials is more than 10X harder. THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS DEVELOPE YOUR CAPABILITY TO PRODUCE MATERIAL WITH CONSISTANT PROPERTIES. When you have your material properties under control, engineers and designers of sufficient talent will be able to create quality products.
Good intention is not the same as good worker. Opening up to comment means opening up to criticism -to make progress you must demand that criticism be constructive! There are many words that are never constructive -a computer can search and reject them. Some hostility should be expected -there are many scams out in the world raking in money from fools who then want to condemn industries that tell them the truth.

Please don't let the Gunthers (7:50) of the world bring you down. You're doing amazing work, inspiring people on many levels. And for whatever it's worth, in my experience some people insist on being extreme and "bad asses" in their electronic communications, but in person they're pussy cats and good community members. I do a lot of work with a community radio station here in San Francisco and that's been the lesson again and again and at this point we don't make any critical decisions on our email list. So tell him that if he wants to contribute, come do it in person, or at least via video conference, and I bet he'll become a strong contributor. And maybe remind him that if he wouldn't be comfortable saying something to someone in person, he shouldn't say it via forum post or email either. It's a lesson that some people are slow to learn. But anyway, thanks again for your excellent work! As I hope you know, you're a model not just for upcycling, but for collaboration and community itself.

I LOVE those little baskets and flower pots made from the extruder. for making the ones with different colors: do you practise to know how much is needed for the first color and then add the next color or do you first do e.g. red for various baskets, then change to yellow and add the yellow. I assume the first because the colors seem to blend into each other and I also assume it won't look so nice if you add the next color once the first color has cooled donw.
And I was wondering if those colors are always soley the original plastic color or if you sometimes add some kind of paint to it?
Would love to here about your experience with this.
    Thanks, Nike
P.S. I have not built the machine yet...so I cannot try it out myself, yet ;)

After a quick Google search it turns out that Tennessee, Florida, and Pennsylvania have stopped recycling. If there were more people that were involved here, it would turn a travesty into a huge opportunity.

I really like what you guys are doing .... I'm a professional manufacturer myself in the garage door industry, we make specialty hardware components. I have an idea to make a super cool design for a door panel, made from recycled plastics, ideally would be a continuous extrusion line.
I'm going to check the forums see if anyone has any technical engineering experience regarding the properties such as extreme hot & cold temperatures, impact resistance, etc.
Or if anyone has information they could share with me, would be greatly appreciated ... I would share & help anyone else who wanted to start a business manufacturing parts & panels, as I have 32 years experience in the business, but 0 experience with plastics.
Looks to me that you folks need to get to a higher professional level in the product development phase, hopefully I can contribute.
    Thanks
    Robert

I would like your attention towards WPC (WOOD PLASTIC) COMPOSITES, CONVERSION INTO WAXES AND CONVERSION INTO PLASTIC WASTE DERIVED FUELS WHICH ARE SCALABLE PROJECTS. IF YOU NEED ANY HELP PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
Reason behind paying attention towards SCALABILITY is that inflow of plastic waste is millions of tons of plastic waste every year still increasing. So in order to deal it, we must go for scalable solutions

There is a pretty big market for 3-D printer enthusiasts. They are always buying spools of plastics and other medium for their printers. I could see a Precious Plastics line of 3-D printer medium.😉

I am very inspired, but in the Caribbean it's not as easy as it is in Europe to get all the needed machinery or the materials to build them. We do however have plenty of plastic all over the place. I would love to clean it up and make products. Any suggestions?

yeah im on twitch and im in a community and sometimes a few of the other people in the community cant be pretty harsh in how they say things. i think online there are a lot of introverted and socially awkward people. so people might come off the wrong way or their intentions tend to be very ambiguous.

You could work out your differences with people on the forum in other ways Dave.. This one was below you.

    • @rabbytca

You also have missed the meaning of the conversation. It was not about Dave or "his differences with people", it is about using constructive terminology and positive language when communicating and critiquing other peoples contributions to what is a public discussion forum.
It is not an easy task when working with an international community of widely different cultures. There are still many places where there are "privileged persons" and class hierarchies which use derogatory language against those they perceive to be beneath them. Those on the receiving end will often mimic the techniques used against them because that is what they know and possibly what their culture requires to survive. Trump is a prime example of the privileged bully that is less than statesman like when pushing his my way or the highway opinions in electronic forums.

@@rabbytcaÍ agree.. that´s BASIC forum rules.. but what Dave did was take it out of the forum and make it personal.

You were talking about problems on the forums. I love how you used someone and had positive things to say as well as negative. You explained it well. It wasn’t a good idea to tell his name, that is publicly humiliating him and it might have been a bad move, we’ll see. But I know the following information will help you if you decide to apply it.
A song once said it best: “You can’t please everyone so you just got to please yourself”. You guys have earned your fame. But that songwriter learned it was impossible to please everyone so he stopped trying. It’s great you read the forum, but when people say things like that it is best to no longer reply to them. Do not reply to anything they say because they will use your own words against you.
Were you ever teased as a child and you replied to the person teasing and they started repeating everything you said? The only way to win is pretend they don’t exist and stop communication with them. Even parents find it more beneficial to only commend their children for positive things they say or do because the child will want to do more positive things to get their parents attention.
Only speak to people when you have something positive to say or you need to answer honest questions. If you never respond to their criticism they won’t have as much reason to bother because they are not getting the attention they want.
You said this guy does a lot and it’s good work. If you think about why he’s criticizing you it becomes obvious. He does a lot but you have the fame. You will never say anything to him that will fix that, that’s why ignoring all negative thoughts from EVERYONE is the only thing that will help. If you make it a policy not to respond people won’t bother as much (they will start out being obnoxious saying why don’t you answer, it’s because it’s true isn’t it? Etc. I call it a throwing a tantrum). If you make that policy it’s easier because your only answer is always to please read our policy about negative comments.
I hope you try this because you are doing wonderful work and no one deserves this frustration. But fame has its consequences.😜😊
    Ana
