  • Here's the next video in my series of wild and wacky production concepts. The idea of this technique is to layer sounds like puzzle pieces that fit together in each others gaps. But not the big ol' gaps that basic sidechain compression uses. No, no, I always make things way more complicated than that... we will be using audio rate modulation to fit a sound in the zero crossing of another song - essentially the smallest gaps you can find in a sound.
This allows you to layer sounds/textures right on top of each other without running into headroom issues (which I run some experiments to justify that this technique offers significant headroom reduction). It is not just a technique for mixing engineers though, it adds quite a bit of texture and is very useful for sound design.
Well I can't really explain what it sounds like... but watch the video and let me know what you think!

Astrobear released his first track with the Mau5trap label, titled “So Says the Sea”, as a part of the “We Are Friends 11” compilation album. Never to be nailed down to a single genre Astrobear continues to put out music from all ends of the spectrum. In addition to writing music, Astrobear is also an educator and leverages his background in Digital Signal Processing and Electrical Engineering to teach advanced sound design concepts in an accessible way for fellow music producers.

Best synthesis and audio teacher on UA-cam hands down. You get into the science of it like no one else.

17:31 just cranking up your interface's sample rate should get rid of any potential aliasing
Awesome idea, this whole micro sidechaining btw

Appreciate you nudging me to keep getting more into bitwig. This last trial was definitely the furthest I've gotten into it and I am pretty convinced I will start using it in my regular workflow.

@@astrobearmusic1977 I just knew that you were going to get into it. The way you get into the details like you do in Phase Plant, I just knew that Bitwig was gonna be something special for you.

Re: your question about oversampling. I believe the grid is always oversampled (don't remember if it's 2x or 4x) and you cannot turn it off.

All the cool kids are using it, it seems. I’m hopping on the bandwagon.
I still don’t know how to do half the stuff I’m familiar with from Ableton. And don’t know nearly any of the cool features yet. I’m always down to hop on a production session if you want to share some bitwig tips!

Definetely made me think of trying it out... Have used varius DAWs.. currently last 5-6 years i m on Ableton.. but for sound design i think bitwig has great potential..

Very cool technique. Never seen that before.
Also, how are you adding the spectrograph at the top of the screen.

@@729mrn that is a plug-in called minimeters, it is only 15 dollars.
I sometimes wish I could zoom in on the spectrogram/oscilloscope. I might invest in another one metering tool for that (like vision4x?). But I probably would keep using minimeters since it runs in the background easily.

@@orotoi1 yeah I’ve been on Ableton a while too. It makes me appreciate Ableton more being in a DAW I am uncomfortable with. But bitwig has a lot of potential - it’s so flexible and yet so friendly (well not so friendly for a beginner like me but I think I’ll get there)
