- The West Highland White Terrier, or Westie as he is affectionately called, is a small dog with a big attitude. This loyal and independent terrier was originally used to hunt vermin but today enjoys participating in various activities and enjoying the company of their humans. In fact, Westies are considered to be among the most people oriented of all the terrier breeds. With chapters devoted to training and activities, West Highland White Terrier shows you how to keep this feisty Fido entertained and engaged.

A westie is a great dog my wee boy is 14 and doing great everyday with him is a blessing
Westies are the most beautiful dogs of all. We have now our second Westie ad we cannot imagine a life without them. They are cute, loyal. adorable, stubbard, , have lots of enrergy, very brave, have no fear. We are so lucky.
Loved mine for almost 16 years!! Miss her SOooo much!
My Westie is 16 years old. He is very independent and suspicious. He is a loyal companion. He is very large as far as Westies go at 32 pounds. He is larger than any other Westie I have ever seen. His parents were both in the large side. He has be very resilient as far as his joints are concerned. Skin and eye problems have just started cropping up in the last year. He is a great dog.
I have a westie, he is called Buddy. Had him since he was 12 weeks old. Buddy is a little daft head. He barks at the tv, he will even go after cars if they make a high pitched noise or speed. Mine is able to alert me to an oncoming seizures 24 hours before I have one as I have epilepsy.
That’s awesome dude...I’ll pray for your health, God Bless....there’s a reason dog spelled backwards is GOD....
I HAD MY WONDEFUL WESTIE FOR 16 YEARS. SHE WAS AMAZING. THEY ARE WONDEFFUL LITTLE DOGS BUT ARE PRONE TO SKIN AND EAR PROBLEMS. AS LONG AS YOU KEEP AN EYE ON IT YOU WILL HAVE MANY, MANY YEARS OF JOY.......THEY CAN HAVE HUGE ATTITUDES TOO! :))
Best dogs...my Benson lived until he was 21....our lab made it to 17...and my current Westie, Petey, is 8. He chased a full size deer across my 18 acre property the other morning....he ran after it like a mad man...deer hauled ass....I’m just glad the deer didn’t hurt/kick him....I ran after him freaking out....he chased it into a bamboo forest down by our stream, but didn’t pursue it....he just sat there with neon yellow deer piss on him, so proud of himself....lol.....he catches rabbits and birds all the time. Little killer....😉
Yeah, they can get hot spots
I have a Westie....His name is Snowy....He gets so much attention from others every time we visit the park for a daily walk.......Common comments I hear all the time are "That's the Ceasar Dog from the dog food commercial"....LOL.....
lol I get the same comment when I'm out with my little girl Kaleigh, and when she's "dressed up" (yes I dress her) she stops traffic♥
Best dogs ever. I’ve had this breed my entire life and they are special ❤
The Face of Terror!!! Oh my God, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time! Can you imagine?
A face of "terrier"
😂
I know, when it said that, I looked behind me, and up on top of the couch my Westie was lying upside down, paws straight up in the air.....a true slayer...
@@mr.smithgnrsmith7808 Ha Ha! "A true slayer!" lol! What a cutie pie!
Lol my westie loves to sun bathe whenever he can
getting a dog like this you will either get a lazy one or a very active one, mine is lazy and sleeps all day but gets really excited when taken for a walk or when she hears a bag of treats also when company come over but other than that this dog will be your companion, i wouldnt say theyre lapdogs as they do not go in between your laps because they get uncomfortable but if you sleep with them they will want to go under the blankets and sleep beside your leg and keep you warm but wherever you are this dog always wants to be next to you
Siren mines is hyper shes 7 years old and she still loves to play and run around shes really smart though
I have a 12 year old westie and he is not fiesty in the slightest!! he's the most affectionate pup ever.
My grandmother had a Westie for many years. He always had a strong personality, especially when he got older. He would always patrol her backyard first thing in the morning, and bark at us (good-naturedly) when we did something he didn't like.
He was very sweet most of the time tho, and never dug much.
"not a lap dog"
clearly you haven't seen mine. He spends 80% of his indoors time sleeping on somebody's lap.
MrHandss mine too! I call him “Mr Needy” because he always needs to cuddle me and follows right at my heels
Great little dogs, grew up with one as she was bought for when I got out of hospital to make me feel better. They do okay with kids but also have a grumpy side if they don't get some alone time or the kids bother them constantly, they love to be active and run around so kids can help keep the dog exercised, me and my brother loved chasing our westie around the garden and throw the ball for her. They'll let you know when they are done playing or don't want to be bothered. They can be very stubborn too when being told no and can be a chore to train so you need to be somebody who can put the time and effort in.
If you can dedicate the time, deal with the constant grooming needed and be on top of skin issues they can have genetically then it will be rewarding. They are very affectionate and fun dogs to have around. Just don't buy one if you want a quiet dog as they are anything but lol. They love to bark and tell the whole neighbourhood who is boss.
my honest thoughts on Westies:
-very affectionate towards people and especially their owner who it'll always stay loyal to
-very intelligent, might outsmart you if you don't stay focused
-pretty stubborn and a bit too proud
-not the best dog to have around little children for too long since they don't really like noisy and rambunctious kids, they do love quiet, gentle kids though
-they dislike big groups of people and too much noise
-they do bark quite a lot
-they barely shed, but their fur needs to be taken care of often otherwise itll become noticeably dirty since its very fair
-they have their independent side, sometimes they'll want some time to stay alone while they rest
-do not get a westie if it's going to be your first dog, they're not easy to train and you'll need to stay alert to make sure they don't develop bad habits
-again I don't think they're the best dog breed to keep if you want them to be a friend for your children, only very responsible kids will be able to handle a westie
-a westie will NOT tolerate teasing from small children (i.e. they don't like little kids touching their paws and tail or kids trying to get on their back or pushing them around), only let your children play with westies if you know they will treat them and play with them respectfully, they enjoy fetching toy balls and love getting their bellies and back of the ears rubbed
One of my Westies is literally the most timid and the top lap dog.
We had our Westie for 13.5 years and were absolutely devastated when we had to put him down due to acute pancreatitis that could no longer be controlled by diet or meds. I can’t imagine owning (or should I say “being owned”) by any other breed of dog. Skin issues were a bit of a challenge all his life and he had to have his left eye removed at age 6 due to a cancerous tumor, but nothing could slow down our fearless little boy!
My westie boy Buddy will be 12 in august.
I love my westie. my advice would be to make sure they always have open space to run and let their energy out. they have lots of it. definitely a high maintenance dog but they are still so wonderful.
You are cute and you have a nice dog. I am considering buying a dog of this breed.
I have one and I love him! He has selective hearing though, lol!
Same.
We have a "Wee White One" living with us......she is a highly active, bright and yes, feisty-female....with a great sense of self-importance and high esteem.....constantly on the move, loves to chase (read: teach them to fly) cats, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, etc.....and if she is loved and respected, she returns that in spades, anxious to please and be squeezed and to be "with" you as a close canine companion.....a wee wonder on four-inch legs whose agility and ability to climb and to jump is as skilled as a Rocky Mountain Goat.......(from which her "Highland" name most likely came ?) Never lost in even deep snow, our wee lass plows through as good as our former Bernese Mountain Dog used to do. Our wee white one loves the outdoors and takes every chance she can get to zip around the nearby dog park, amusing everyone around with her antics and "frantics".....like a teenager on chocolate....! Her cold (read: ice cube cold) wet nose is used to stick in either of your ears to wake you so you can join her in a daily game of "fetch the ball" a game you will no doubt take part in by doing most of that "fetch".....! She is a very dear wee lass in every respect and a credit to Scotland's canine contributions to the planet.....!
I lost my Winston to heart failure at 151/2 5/8/24 . I will never be the same my wife and I have been married for 30 years we had Winston for half our marriage. We are in our mid seventies and are too old for another dog ! I have CLL and when my time comes I know I’ll see Winston again . What wonderful a companion he was . We loved him with all our hearts. I work at a retirement home and one of the residents owns one name Cody. He’s very friendly and gets excited to see me. He tends to bark whenever he hears a truck horn and when I leave the room
I most definitely want this dog. My family doesn't want a huge dog. But if we get a smaller dog I want it to be this one. I'm determined :)
I had my first Westie Bridgette I got for my son in 5th grade,no shedding problems, smart as can be,always slept with me though! Easily trained,if she got out on occasion she knew how to get home! Lol,she lived 19 years while my son was in college, very sad to loose her, then second Westie Cally, strong, willful personality, that's a Westie, she tackles ground hogs, possums, raccoons, rabbits, great watch dogs, but they are hunters,we have a small farm with 2 acres under ground electric fence,8 acres in all ,but she sunbaths too,no issues of any skin problems, or anything, watch thier dental needs, they are groomed abt 5 times a year,I trim them in between grooming, but yes lap dog for sure, not the first one but Cally is a Mommys girl.constant companion. I also have Carin terrier, second one too,Duncan and he does what he wants when he wants, both of them are great, especially when it comes to shedding,no messy hair problems, love them!!!!❤❤❤
My Winky is almost 10yrs. old and I wouldn't have any breed...He defiently all terrier through and through...Please adopt folks there are plenty of Westies available through Westie Rescues they have lots to offer your home : )
Lucy our Westie is the most behaved out of all our dogs she goes everywhere with me…
My first West Highland, Holley, passed away just 3 months shy of 19 years old.
Wow you are lucky that he was 19 years old. My first one was 16,5 years old and now we have our second Westie who is almost 3 years old.
I have a west highland and she's very smart she was easly trained
i’m a vet tech and i swear westies, chihuahuas and dachshunds will live loooonnng lives.
With Westies it can depend. Some places that breed them can be incredibly dodgy and will inbreed to make easier money. You can still get good years out of them regardless but the problems that may not have cropped up in other westies need to be kept an eye on, especially if you're getting a rescue.
I don’t think any Scotsman ever said “gosh darn it” ever! 😂😂😂
There is nothing cutter. Then. SAMI. The. WESTIE. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I have 2 & had them for 9 years. They are definitely lap dogs lol, and skin issues do occur. They're awesome though!
I can't imagine a Scotish nobleman saying "gosh darn it" :P
Skin issues? Pop some baby sun cream on those ears, front and back. Works wonders for white dogs
but regardless great video series, very handy as I am considering having a dog at some point in the future and it's good to hear about different breeds as I look them up once in a while
I’ve had two...their AWESOME dude...
My westie lap dog
NOT A LAP DOG???? They sure are! Mine would spend her entire life on the setee or on my wife's knee if she was allowed!
Nobody told my westie that lol.
Snow Leopard-Dog 2:52
Westie actually.
beutiful dog
Funny dog 😂
We are looking for a small dog as family pet. The westie seems to be what we are looking for.
We also would appreciate if the dog has watch dog tendencies and bark if someone wants to intrude our flat. So can the westie watch or guard as?
They are great watch dogs....sharp, confident bark....and they have no “punk” in them
They are no guard dog as most Westies tend to welcome strangers in with an attitude of friendly curiosity. But, they do make good watchdogs as are they are very inquisitive, alert little busybodies who will let you know what’s going on. Unusual happenings and people approaching the house are always announced by a Westie’s loud, deep bark in my experience.
Basically they will sit and stare at any noise that interests them and, like many dogs, bark when they get excited or hear the door go. If someone enters you will hear something from one.
I think this is the dog for me!!!!
I am the right dog for you
I don't know
Do these dogs shed?
No
Is it related to yorkie
Prince Mc the Great
