What you did using the "cd .." command was going up to the parent directory, while "going back" means to return to the previous directory, which sometimes isn't the same as the parent directory, and the command for it is "cd -"

      He really shouldn't have tried to start by comparing GUI file management with CLI file management. Even if it's as basic as navigating directories, of all the things that the command line does worse than the GUI, file management is the most glaring. It's one of those places where CLI design has stagnated since the 80s.
      Every day I lament the fact that there's not a single terminal app that integrates with UI file management somehow, because such a thing would allow for fast and easy workflow.

    • @Gramini

      @@YourIdeologyIsDelusional What exactly do you mean by that, could you elaborate?

      @@Gramini
      The ability for the CLI to interact with the GUI, or the GUI to interact with the CLI. Basically, a modern software terminal ("Terminal emulator" is such a stupid, archaic term) that can integrate with the rest of the modern linux environment, instead of continuing to pretend like 30 year old standards are the best things will ever be.
      Just the ability for Man to automatically dump its output into the window of a UI reader application that nicely sorts it into an easy to read and navigate form, or for your UI file manager to be able to sync up with and reflect the active working directory in the CLI, would push the OS forward by a decade or two. Linux should have had this kind of stuff in the 2000s.

    • @Gramini
      @Gramini 3 роки тому

      @@YourIdeologyIsDelusional Some UI Reader/Text Editor (like gedit) can read contents from stdin, so you can pipe man to those if you want to. Admittedly, this might not be the best solution. However, there are things like gman or the khelpcenter.
      Keeping the working directory in sync creates some questions too: which file manager window/tab syncs with which terminal/tab/shell etc. Should be possible, but seems not to be helpful enough for anyone to implement since the last 30 years.

    An answer to your task in the video;
    To move to the home directory from the root directory, type:
    1. "cd " command without any other thing and it takes you to the home directory
    2. "cd" + "home" to go to the home directory, then type "cd" + "current user" to go to the default directory.

    The newer versions use zsh instead of traditional bash, which makes some things much quicker. For example, to change into a directory that exists in your pwd, you don't have to even type the cd command. Just type the name of the directory and you'll change into that directory. Neat little trick I found out when I didn't type cd once.

    I'm 28 years old, and FASCINATED at the completely open table that GNU/Linux gives the user, (not to mention the wildly supportive community) but also totally intimidated after using Windows my entire life, since age 6.
    After cracking my knuckles and facing it, I'm like a little kid again, learning how to navigate the terminal and slowly memorizing the commands. (and utilizing 'help' when i need it ;) )
    Guys, as a novice, trust me, it's so awesome when you build this TINY pebble of knowledge where you can actually problem solve your issues instead of purely referring to tutorials. Keep learning! The best BEST part of linux is running into an issue and going, "okay, I bet if I combine these commands... with this action... BOOM! Got it!"
    Using Windows is learning to interact with a screen.
    Using Linux is learning to interact with a computer.

    Hi Chuck, first off all I wanna thank you for your Videos and the work you put into it. I really like your work. I just finished my education as an IT-specialist for system integration here in Germany. I'm applying for my first job in the first level support and today I had a meeting with the company where I was told that they looking for someone who does the first level support but also install and administrate Microsoft Dynamics 365. could you make a Video about Microsoft Dynamics 365 and how to administrat it? That would be awesome. And maybe a video about the first level support and how to solve some problems. I think you are a great teacher. So thanks again for your work. Greetings from Germany ✌
